Decorating the Original Way We have been busy doing some painting and re-decorating some of the bedrooms at our summer home. When you have seven kids painting the walls is necessary. My oldest 17 year old son is my painter and I keep telling him he could be a star on HGTV!
We have tried all the paint brands from flat finish to eggshell finish. The very best we have found is Valspar. It is easy to apply and odorless with beautiful, vibrant colors to choose from and a smooth finish and great coverage. Valspar is not the cheapest paint but not the most expensive at around $45.00 for a gallon of paint. We just finished one of my daughters bedrooms in the color Cat Woman, a light pastel green in a flat finish. We purchased our Valspar pain at our local Ace Hardware. Faux Marble Desk PUBLISHED ON August 28, 2016August 28, 2016 by thislittlehausblog So I’m going to make this short and sweet, because that’s exactly what this project was for me. Total cost for me $30
Here’s What I used….. I scored on this Faux marble counter top at the “AS IS” section at IKEA for $8!! Its Regularly $79.00. It was cut to 60! vs. 72! (the length it comes brand new (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/40335628/)). Then I bought the LERBERG Trestle (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80130776/) ($15.00 also from IKEA) Valspar Brilliant Gold (http://www.lowes.com/pd/Valspar-Gold-Metallic-Fade-ResistantEnamel-Spray-Paint-Actual-Net-Contents-11-oz/3729675) spray paint also used in our little hangout space (https://thislittlehaus.com/2016/06/14/our-little-hangout-space/) (3) 1×2! FAUX CEMENT TILE DIY AUGUST 29, 2016
E L S I E L A R S O NE L S I E L A R S O N
One of our big priorities in designing this home was to create a polished home recording studio for Jeremy. In the past he had a lot of make-shift studios that did the job, but here we decided to invest time and money into making it something really special. That said, studios are 'SPENSIVE! Like, whoa. So to counteract those big purchases, we're doing as much DIY decor as we possibly can.
His studio has its own entrance in the back of our home. His clients and collaborators do typically use that entrance and park in the back when entering his space. So we decided to upgrade his entry as much as possible the #DIY way... starting with this faux ceramic tile. It's actually just paint and Sharpie markers! I'm really excited to share how YOU can do this DIY tile yourself, but !rst a fun before and after shot–
What a change! We recently had our entire exterior painted white, and it made a HUGE visual impact (I keep saying it's the best renovation money we spent). The concrete slab is covered by a ceiling, so it doesn't get too much wear and tear (ice, snow, rain, etc.), even though it's an outdoor space. We initially planned to tile this small area, but after getting a quote, we decided to try a DIY option and saved THOUSANDS. Can I get a high !ve? OK, so the pattern we chose was heavily inspired by this Mission Stone & Tile pattern (http://www.missionstonetile.com/Electra-Ultra-Marine-Bone-Cement-Hexagon-Tile-p/cement-dand-marine.htm)
.I
had a HUGE crush on it, but it wasn't in our budget to get the real thing. You can see from the link that the tile can be laid in di"erent patterns, unlike how we did it, which was more uniform. I love it both ways! First, the concrete slab was painted with Valspar Anti Skid Porch & Floor
(http://amzn.to/2buD9g3)
in premixed Dark Grey from Lowe's. Using a roller, this goes pretty quickly! As you can see, the paint is more bluish than grey. I was disappointed at !rst, but ended up really liking the color as the project went on. Tip: Even though the color is premixed, I would suggest still getting it shaken at the paint desk.

Fisher Upper Is this where I write something clever?
Changes August 15, 2016 Well, it’s been an interesting couple of weeks. A lot of things have changed! First, Anthony and I have made some big progress toward paying off our debt. In the last 2 months, we’ve been able to pay off one more student loan, a credit card and a big chunk of another student loan. It feels amazing! The Dave Ramsey system really works, and it feels so good to cross another debt off our list!! Second, I quit my second job. Long story short, the hours weren’t what I had agreed to (in my mind, off at 10:30pm means off at 10:30pm, maybe 10:45, but not 12:45am), I was being asked to do things that were not in the description of the job I’d applied for, and the owner of the business is a complete and total ass. He’s also very involved in the daily workings of the business, so he was there most days. In the end it became just too much, the atmosphere was SO negative and I was so, so exhausted from so many late nights (plus a 40-minute drive home after getting off work in the middle of the night), so I decided to be done. This, also, feels amazing. I’m going to get to be at home more, see Anthony more, see Steve and Lucky more (they’re really starved for attention, or so I’ve gathered from their insistence on touching/being on top of me at all times the second I walk in the door), get more rest and eat better. Overall, this is a really good thing, and I am really excited. Third, we did a bunch more work on our house! I woke up feeling pretty crappy this weekend (summer colds are the WORST) but thankfully my family was able to come over and help us get some serious work done. My oldest brother, Brian, got to work adding thicker trim around the windows in the front. There was trim there, but it wasn’t really anything great, it was just…there. I’m a big fan of thicker trim, I think it holds color so much better and adds more polish to the overall curb appeal of a home. So the thin trim had to go! See how thin the trim was here?
hour for the stuff to dry, then we sanded it, and it’s impossible to tell that there was ever a hole there! It’s amazing. My mom did the bulk of the work repainting the door because I am Useless. We took it off, cleaned it, sanded it, and primed it, then Anthony and I (for the first time EVER) agreed completely on the color we chose. Seriously, it never happens. But it did! We chose a Valspar color called Watershed, and went with Clark & Kensington semi-gloss exterior paint. Normally for doors people use a higloss, but since ours is a little banged up and we didn’t want the imperfections to be as noticeable, we chose the semi-gloss. It took (I think) 3 coats to get the color just the way we wanted it, but I must say, it think it looks pretty dang good:
(Please ignore how terrible the trim around it looks, we didn’t get around to painting that this weekend)

! I have had this china cabinet ever since I got married. Wow, its been 24 years now! I picked it up at a yard sale. Our first home was furnished with yard sale, auction and hand me down items.
I have always collected Blue Willow Dishes. I have had my Blue Willow dishes in the china cabinet since I got it. One apartment and two homes later, I have a formal dinning room. I’m not one to paint furniture, but I thought it was time to give this gal an update. Last summer we updated an old dinning table set we had. Of course bought at a yard sale, and used chalky paint. Turned out really good. It was time for the
china cabinet. Cleaned out all my Blue Willow and got to work. We used Valspar chalk paint in the light blue/gray color and sealed it with wax.
I have a growing collection of milk glass. My bigger and nicer pieces I thought I would put in with my Blue Willow in my china cabinet.

As you can see in this picture, I originally designed the island to have two 12" wall cabinets on the backside, one of which would have the side removed, and the door screwed shut, to provide a couple shelves for display and cookbooks, but I changed my mind on this, to make more room for kitchen stools. We ordered our appliances from Sears, and kept going back every time they had them for a lower price. We ended up saving several hundred dollars over the original "sale" prices. This made up in part for the fact that Ikea decided not to have their annual kitchen sale the year we decided to put in an Ikea kitchen. Bummer. (It's going on right now, through the end of August, if you're interested.)

Next up was counter tops. We had been without counters or a kitchen sink for about 3 months, doing dishes in the bathtub. Oh, what a joy that is. Needless to say, we went through lots of paper plates and cups, and ate !

This is "our" slab! It is Delicatus granite from Brazil. It has a creamy white background that goes well with the Bodbyn white cabinets, with dramatic slashes of black throughout. There are hints of copper and white mica that catch the light and add sparkle to the kitchen, along with clouds of a buff color. it was just what we were

that catch the light and add sparkle to the kitchen, along with clouds of a buff color. it was just what we were dreaming of. It was a happy day when they came to put it in. I will not mention the name of the company we bought it from - there are several things that we should have known to ask about, since this was the second time we had had stone installed in a kitchen. One major thing was the "templating" process, which is exactly what they called it when making the appointment. The last time we had granite put in, the guy actually made a template - imagine that! - taking an exact pattern of our walls and appliance placement. This time, the guy just measured, and consequently, they did not scribe the granite to the walls, and my stove just barely has 1/16th of an inch to slide in and out of its space. They put the island top on crooked, with NO overhang on the drawer side, where all the crumbs would be being swept into my hand, and consequently onto the floor. They came back and corrected this, but the fact that it wasn't scribed to the walls gave me major headaches when I was installing the tile backsplash. Just hope this makes someone else more savvy when they go shopping for an installer.

On another note, my sister and her husband came to visit in the midst of our kitchen renovation, and they honestly - told me that the oak buffet didn't go with anything in the new house. They were right! I had considered painting it for years, but never had the guts. It had been abandoned, along with a matching table and chairs! - in a house that my husband's parents bought many years ago. I had stripped and re-stained it once. Here's the before:

I sketched those vignettes of the boys one day while we were playing "school" and they insist that it gets displayed in their room front and center. I only wish I had found two of them because the boys fight !
