Make easy, relatively inexpensive design statement with paint BY JANA SOELDNER DANGER Special to South Florida Home Paint can add accents that are whimsical or dramatic to a room, or completely change its personality. Paint can be a fairly quick and easy, and relatively inexpensive, way to make a home fresh again. Although there are no rules, like most other aspects of home décor, trends in paint colors tend to come and go. It is important, however, for homeowners to be realistic about trendy colors, said Andrea Magno, color and design expert at Benjamin Moore. “We always want the new colors to be relatable to real people,” she said. “Some new hot color might be more applicable to nail polish than to the walls of a home. People should think about how they’re going to live with a color.” Look for examples of colors in magazines or online. “Start by identifying what you like,” said Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams.

MAJOR TRENDS

Gray is still a major player in paint, said Sue Kim, color strategist for Valspar. “Different dimensions of gray are taking center stage in our homes,” she said. “Just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it’s boring. We’re also seeing more heritage and artisan-inspired colors.’ Blues are big. “We continue to see all shades of blue, from really dark, inky navy to soft and airy,” said Sarah Fishburne, director of trend and design at The Home Depot. “We see layering of blues in a palette with a lot of depth.” Light, soft colors also are popular, Fishburne added. “We’re seeing a lot of pastels re-emerging, like mint, petal pink, pistachio and aqua.” White is a major trend, Magno said. But don’t think of white as one simple neutral. “We have 250 different whites,” she said. “People are doing subtle layering of multiple whites in a single room. We’re seeing whites used on walls and also as a backdrop for bringing in accent colors. Or if you want to make more of a color statement, you can use white to frame a color.” Wadden predicts four distinct trends for next year. The first is dramatic and dark. “Charcoals, deep forest green, wine, deep plum and navy, along with some pepper and other brights,” she said. “It’s a romantic vibe coming from Europe. Dark hues set a dramatic stage for sensuous luster.” The second is lighter. “It’s a deeper version of pastels,” Wadden said, adding that the colors include earthy pinks, muted blues, deeper greens and browns. “Soothing warm tones pair with airy cools for a harmonious, nature-inspired palette,” Wadden said. “It comes from a need to decompress from the world.” The third is a retro palette of fiery oranges, vibrant reds, purples and citrus yellow that recalls the 1970s and ‘80s. “This palette has amazing versatility,” Wadden said. Wadden’s last prediction of mustards and browns and ocean blues and corals is inspired by global immigration redefining national identities. “Socially and politically, a lot of cultures are colliding and blending,” Wadden said. “This is eclectic design.”

said. “First, think about what the focal point is in the room, whether it’s a painting, an area rug or draperies. What’s the hero in the room? Then pick a color that elevates that focal point.” Most people will not toss out the rest of their décor just because they have changed paint colors. “What are the parts of the décor you’re not changing?” Kim said. “How will a color enhance what you already have? Think about how a color will go with your furniture.” Kim continued, “There are a lot of other materials and shades that go into a room, and you want to choose colors that go with them. We all want to live in a beautiful environment, and part of creating one is working with what you have.” Don’t forget the ceiling. It’s the fifth wall of a room, and it doesn’t have to be white. “Painting the ceiling an unexpected color is a delight,” Kim said.

“It’s the opposite of what you’d expect.” “A dark trim color, even black, is a great way to punch up a space,” Wadden said.

Fishburne recommends pale blue for ceilings. “It lifts the room,” she said. COLOR AS ACCENTS

Those who want to focus on safe neutrals but also want some bold colors can use then as accents. “People love grays and neutrals, but they’re getting braver about bringing in color through accessories, furnishings and fabrics,” Magno said. Blues, teals and greens can be dramatic accent colors. Reds are popular, but they are changing in tone. “Reds are morphing to the warmer chili and brick families,” Fishburne said. Or start by using a neutral on the main walls of a room. “Then paint an alcove or a niche a stronger color,” Magno said. “Accent walls have fallen out of favor. Now it’s about using color with architectural detail.” “Instead of white trim, use a soft blue or gray,” Magno said.

SHEEN

Paint is more than color. “Think about the sheen,” Magno said. Sheen ranges from flat to high gloss with several choices in between. “The higher the sheen the more reflectants there are,” Magno said. It used to be that higher gloss paints were recommended for humid areas like bathrooms and kitchens. “But now they’re producing paints with lower sheens that are appropriate for humid areas,” Magno said. REINVENTING FURNITURE

Paint isn’t just for walls. It can also make an old piece of furniture look new. “If you’re tired of something, reinvent it with spray paint,” Fishburne said.

“Overlooked items can be loved again,” Kim said. “Paint the top portion of a TV tray gray or yellow so it becomes a decorative element. You don’t have to use it for its original purpose. It can become a plant stand or go onto your porch.” Another idea: Paint an old mirror—this will require a primer, Kim said—and turn it into a chalkboard. With thousands of colors and shades available, choosing the right one can be daunting. Researchers at Valspar determined it takes most consumers more than 100 days to choose a color for a paint project. To help, they created AskVal, a digital resource that offers a Pinterest analyzer and paint chips by mail so consumers don’t have to visit a store to get samples. “Choosing a color is an emotional decision,” said Stephen Strong, Valspar’s digital director. “People want to get it right.”

I tend to be drawn towards light wall colors, but wanted a bit of a change. When I heard that Valspar now offers the first complete line of Zero VOCᵻ interior paints, available exclusively at Lowes, I knew I wanted to try them out! After a couple hours of painting, we had this:

I chose Pantone Barely Blue for above the chair rail, and Sharkfin for below. Pantone Barely Blue is the perfect blend of white, gray and blue, and Sharkfin is a deep and moody blue that’s the perfect complement to the blue and gray tones in the bedroom.

We especially love the contrast between the Sharkfin and the white trim! We got both coats done in less than a day, and it’s made such a difference to this space!
