There are so many types of holiday accommodation it can be difficult to know where to start. If you’ve got your dream destination decided but are confused about where to stay, take a look at this guide to narrow things down.
Types of accommodation All-inclusive accommodation is a great option for holidaymakers looking for convenience, as all food and drink is included in the price. It’s often the first choice of accommodation for families with young children, however it’s worth checking out what type of food you can expect the hotel to serve before booking as it may not be to everyone’s taste. Half board accommodation is a similar option, however this usually only includes breakfast and the evening meal. Alternatively, you can opt for self-catering; usually in apartment-based accommodation, this type of accommodation usually has only basic cooking facilities – you certainly won’t be making a Sunday roast! However, you’re free to eat wherever you like. Self-catering accommodation also has a living area, something hotel-based accommodation does not. open in browser PRO version

Choosing a serviced apartment will get you better kitchen facilities should you want them, but rarely have bars or similar facilities on site. Large parties may also choose a villa; usually self-catered, these private homes not only feature bedrooms, bathrooms and living spaces, but often a private garden and maybe even a pool!
Questions to ask before booking accommodation The accommodation you book can have a huge impact on your holiday as a whole; for example, you don’t want to book a hotel in a bustling city centre when you’re looking to relax. Here are a few questions you should answer before making any booking:
How many floors does the hotel have? (Parents of young children may want to avoid high-rise buildings) What bar or restaurant facilities are on-site/nearby? How accessible is it for wheelchairs or prams? Are there any shop or supermarket facilities nearby? Is there a swimming pool? What entertainment is on offer on-site/in the local area? open in browser PRO version

Are there nightclubs or bars nearby? Is it likely to be noisy? How hot is the country I’m visiting? Does my hotel or apartment have air conditioning? What is the plumbing like? (Some countries, such as Greece, have more primitive plumbing setups than others) What season am I travelling in? What effect will this have on my accommodation?
The best hotels across the UK Staying a little closer to home? You’re in luck; there are hundreds of great hotels across the UK, in cities such as London and Manchester. If it’s luxury you’re looking for, we’d recommend London’s The Dorchester. A glorious Art Deco building on Park Lane, just across the street from Hyde Park, this five-star hotel features one of only four three Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK as well as 24 hour room service, a spa and fully soundproofed rooms. For something a little cheaper that still offers high-quality service, Stylotel is the only place to go if you’re looking for something cool and unusual. With aluminium walls and illuminated glass furniture, it’s a hotel experience you’ll never forget. Alternatively, try the Amsterdam Hotel London for something a little more family-friendly that’s still easy on the purse strings. open in browser PRO version

Manchester also has some great hotel options. At the high end, there’s the Old School House; with a rooftop lounge, individually designed rooms, complimentary WiFi and a gym, this hotel represents the best luxury Manchester has to offer. Of course, there are cheaper options here too. The Works Aparthotel offers serviced apartments with a few extra touches thrown in – while it’s location makes it less than ideal for those who want a quiet night, the rooms are soundproofed and the quirky feel is perfect for younger visitors.
