urban housing for the elderly

4

4th year fall 2014 - spring 2015 Professors: Christian Dagg and Kevin Moore location: Birmingham, AL, USA The goal of this urban design project was to develop an assisted living facility that reacted to the proposed neighborhood plan for Birmingham, AL. In this plan, each set of four blocks has buildings that hold the street edge with one corner pulling back to allow for a community gathering space. This housing design facilitates exterior space for the community as well as private space for residents in the back. There are three types of units that respond to their location and relation to the city: eyes on the street units, one bedroom courtyard units with balconies, and independent living walk-up units for more mobile elderly persons. Additionally, it was important to develop these unit plans so that the individual could customize the space and have ample access to windows for light as well as views.

contextual scale

2nd year spring 2013 Bibb City Branch Library Professor: Robert Sproull location: Bibb City, GA, USA The objective of this Bibb City library is to create a landmark that contextually fits into the surrounding residential neighborhood. The scale and rhythm of the structure directly relates to the residential nature of the area.

16

A memorable interior experience is created through various day lighting strategies that relate to different aspects of the library’s program. Small pyramidal skylights direct light to the path of circulation towards the front of the building and rectangular light wells illuminate the books and reading areas. The formal move upward on the corner separates this civic building from the scale of the rest of the neighborhood. This form points toward the nearby water tower and allows it to stand out as a landmark.

learning through design-build

3rd year fall 2013 Rose Lee and Jason’s Houses Professors: Xavier Vendrell, John Marusich, and Alex Henderson location: Auburn Rural Studio Footwash, AL, USA Built in collaboration with JP Alexander, Lauren Barker, Nathaniel Bartlett, Jack Bigbie, Josh Banks, Henry Boyle, Forrest Burleson, Michael Callaway, Krystal Duchene, Ellise Gallagher, Will Gaskill, Saxon Gibbs, Robert Gray, Quinton Jones, Abby Katsoulis, Kyle Kiersey, Lauren Lloyd, Jonathan Kneely, Rubi Carrero Ortiz, Will Ready, Caitlyn Salters, LIbby So, Samantha Speed, Felipe Vaz Stadthagen, Sarah Wahlgren, Tim Wang

26

Our class was tasked to test the 20k house product line and choose two to place on Rose Lee’s land for her and her son Jason. Careful study through drawing, computer modeling, rendering, structural, environmental, view, and circulation diagrams of five 20k houses allowed us to strategically choose the two best 20k houses for the site. Eddie’s house provided Rose Lee a long porch similar to her previous home, and Mac’s house was an excellent choice for it’s orientation, front porch that connected to the existing courtyard, and relation to the site.

27

many schemes were presented to best determine which 20k houses to choose and how they would be oriented. we tested the options through drawing, models, and physically marking out options on the site. to the right is the final plan: eddie’s house in the front with an additional bedroom and mac’s house to the rear with the porch overlapping the old courtyard.

extending senses

4th year interior architecture thesis studio summer 2015 weeks 1 - 6 Professors: Matt Hall and Rebecca O’Neal Dagg location: Birmingham, AL, USA This project is a renovation of an existing building that is no longer in use. Tasked to create one aspect of a potential food hub for Birmingham, this design strives to be the central piece to a greater plan for the building. The restaurant/ demonstration kitchen provides specific views into the food collection and distribution area towards the back, apertures that peer into the local food market, and a large door that opens to a larger eating area that is open during dinner hours.

32

Through specific apertures in the walls and a large skylight lined in metallic gold, this space offers a refuge from the hot Alabama sun and provides a relaxing atmosphere for people spending time here. The restaurant is not only a place to eat, but a space where the community is able to enter at any time of day and participate in cooking classes centered around locally grown food. A strong connection from interior to exterior is created through a bar that extends the senses of sight, smell, and taste onto the street outside.

4th year interior architecture thesis studio summer 2015 weeks 7 - 12 Professors: Justin Miller and Lida Cunningham Sease location: Birmingham, AL, USA Expanding on ideas and programmatic elements from the first six weeks of the summer studio, we were given an abandoned school to reuse as a potential site for Birmingham’s food hub.

36

The goal of this design project was to develop a spine that had specific light, air, and material qualities. The small amount of square footage developed focused on creating a space where people eating could experience different levels of detail from pattern on the wall to blue reflected light from a light shelf above the seating. Other surfaces [including a glass, reflective railing] were strategically placed so that light could vibrantly bounce around the interstitial space.

intricacy of space, material, and function

4th year spring 2015 Co-Working Space Professor: Kevin Moore location: Birmingham, AL, USA Intricacy as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary: “the quality or state of being complex or having many parts; something that is complex or detailed.”

42

An emphasis on complexity of program led to the development of a space where the function could be changed throughout the day– from typical co-working to event/lecture space. Furthermore, multiple types of spaces are identified through specific furniture, lighting and spatial qualities. A single person is able to choose where to work: a cafe table, couch and coffee table, chair and small table, long public table, or nook bench. Each of these options allows for a different type of possible social interaction and atmosphere for coworking. Heavy storage creates some divisions and also connects both the first and second floors. Similarly, light curtains create intricacies of material through pattern as you experience them close and far away as well as flexibility for spatial uses.

craft and jointery

3rd year fall 2013 Gerrit Rietveld Zig Zag Chair Reproduction Professor: Steve Long location: Auburn Rural Studio Newbern, AL, USA Built in collaboration with Sarah Wahlgren “The purpose of every stylistic period is not to come up with variations of form, but rather to find the true and only possible solution for construction and manufacture; a balanced whole in which the practical requirements of a practicable construction.” The Origin of Things: sketches, models, prototypes, Gerrit Rietveld

50

This reproduction of the zig zag chair aims to exemplify the craft, jointery, and finish of the original zig zag chair built in 1934. Sarah and I researched the chair to find the exact dimensions and original intentions as there are many different reproductions of this chair today. The chair is built of laminated cherry wood and employs dovetail joints as well as bolts to keep it together. Rietveld’s chair had a revolutionary effect on furniture design; it changed how designers thought of the distribution of load bearing members and the absorption of stress, in addition to a new way of approaching chair structure.

visual travel notes

3rd year spring 2014 Professors: Scott Finn, Katherine Krizek, Davide Vitale These pencil drawings, sketches, and watercolors document many places traveled in Italy. Drawing every day honed skills in many mediums including pencil, cante crayon, charcoal and watercolor. We were taught to observe and draw what we actually see in order to accurately represent the built environment. Careful geometric studies, multiple plan drawings, perspectives, and sections were drawn to gain a complete understanding of each building.
