OBJECTIVES: • To create an innovative space, considering function as its main priority • To design spaces in such a way that the culture and traditional environment is incorporated into design. SCOPE: Incorporating designing of spaces such as • Administration zone, security. • Academic zones , theatres, studios, libraries, dormitories, auditorium. • Public zones, open air theatre, canteen, free pathways allowing students to feel the environment.

INTRODUCTION School of performing arts is an institution which is related to urban context, which is going to accommodate the stream of 10+2+3 years of education. The site is located in kuchipudi village of Krishna district is selected for the design of the project ‘school of performing arts’ the site area is measuring about 10.5acres.

CONCEPT NAMASKAR IS THE TRADITIONAL WAY TO START ANY PERFORMANCE. BEFORE AND AFTER EVENT, WE DO A NAMASKAR AS A WAY OF OFFERING OUR PRAYERS TO THE LORD, THE AUDIEMCE, OUR GURU AND MOTHER EARTH….

THE CONCEPT IS DEVELOPED FROM A INSPIRATION OF ANCIENT BUDDHIST SCULPTURES OF AMARAVATI. THE FORM OF A BUILDING EMPHASIS ON MODERN ARCHITECTURE AND GET A VERNACULAR EFFECT. THE BUILDING SEEMS TO BE SOLID FROM OUTSIDE, YET BRINGS A FEEL OF OPENNESS TO THE USERS INSIDE, IT FOLLOWS THE PRINCIPLE OF DIFFUSED LIGHTING

FOR THE EMERGING NEW STATE OF TELANGANA, HYDERABAD CITY THE AGE OLD CAPITAL CITY HOLDING CULTURAL HISTORY AND HERITAGES IN THE CENTRE OF DEVELOPMENT AND IDENTITY. HENCE AN GOVT. PROPOSAL FOR THE STATE MUSEUM NEAR DURGAM CHERUVU, HITEX-CITY. THE SITE IS OF 6.8 ACRES IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO INORBIT MALL AND SURROUNDED BY CORPORATE HOUSES

THE FORM OF THE BUILDING IS INSPIRED FROM THE GOLCONDA HOTEL HYDERABAD, THE MAIN AIM IS TO REDUCE THE GROUND COVER AND TO MAXIMISE THE VIEW OF DURGAM CHERUVU LAKE, THE WATER IS COLLECTED FROM THE NATURAL SLOPE AROUND THE BUILDING BY CREATING A ARTIFICIAL POND.

COURTYARD TYPE BUILDINGS ARE MOST SUITABLE IN COMPOSITE CLIMATE A COURTYARD IS A MOST PLEASANT OUTDOOR SPACE FOR MOST OF THE YEAR BACAUSE, IT EXCLUDES THE WINDS AND TRAPS THE SUN. IT IS DESIGNED IN SUCH A WAY THAT ALLOW SUN PENETRATION DURING THE WINTER MONTHS BUT PROVIDES SHADING IN HOT SEASONS.

ARCHITECTURE

ORIENTATION HELPS IN RECEIVING LESS RADIATION WHICH RSULTS IN LESSER HEAT GAIN AND REDUCED THE OVER ALL AIR CONDITIONING RQUIREMENTS AND HENCE SAVES ENERGY. IT ALSO HELPS IN RECEIVING NATURAL LIGHT AND VENTILATION. COLD AIR FORMED AT THE ROOF SHINKS INTO THE COURTYARD GROUNDFLOOR (NIGHT TIME) & COOL AIR STOED WITHIN THE SHADED WALL RADIATES TO THE SURROUNDING (DAY TIME). ADOPTED FROM COURTYARD HOUSE AS A TEMPERATURE REGULATOR.

GEOGRAPHICAL CONDITIONS • ROCKY TERRAIN & HILL • HYDERABAD WAS LOCATED IN THE SOUTH CENTRAL REGION OF THE INDIAN SUBCONTINENT. • NORTH OF THE CITY BECAME THE HEART OF THE CITY DUE DO THE MAJOR GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS & IMPORTANT LANDMARKS. MOZAMJAHI MARKET IS LOCATED IN THE CENTRAL ZONE WATER STAGNATION SINCE THERE IS A GRADUALLY DECREASING SLOPE FROM SURROUNDING AREAS TO MAZAMJAHI MARKET. A LOT OF TIMES DURING RAINY SEASON, WATER STAGNATION AND FLOODING OF WATER INTO THE SITE WAS OCCURRED CLIMATE HYDERABAD HAS A TROPICAL WET AND DRY CLIMATE BORDERING ON A HOT SEMI ARID CLIMATE. ANNUAL MEAN TEMPERATURE IS 26^C; MONTHLY MEAN TEMPERATURES ARE 21 – 32^C SUMMERS (MARCH - JUNE) ARE HOT AND HUMID. TRAFFIC CONDITION A JUNCTION OF CULTURES SINCEE OLD CLOCK TOWERS HERE MARKS THE ‘CHAURASTA’ OF ONE OF THE BUSIEST ROADS IN HYDERABAD, TRAFFIC PROBLEM HAS INCREASED ON THE ROAD FROM MOZAMJAHI MARKET TO NAMPALLY DUE TO THE CONSTRUTION WORK OF METRO RAIL PROJECT.

CONDITIONS FOR THE DESIGN OF MARKET THERE WERE SEVERE FLOODS IN 1908 WHICH DESTROYED THE NEIGHBOURHOOD THIS WAS CLOSELY FOLLOWED BY BUBONIC PLEAGUE IN 1911 DECREASING THE POPULATION CONSIDERABLY. THE NIJAM 7 ASCENDED THE THRONE IN 1911 AND KNEW THERE WAS A GREAT NEED FOR REDESIGNING THE CITY IN A PLANNED MANNER AND IN A HYGENIC WAY SO HE SET UP CITY IMPROVEMENT BOARD (CIB) IN 1912 HEADED BY HIS SON MOZAMJAH. THE FAMOUS CIVIL ENGINEER M.VISWESHWARAYA AND ASLO MANY BRITISH ARCHITECTS FORMD A PART OF THE PLANNING COMMITTEE WHICH IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE REDESIGN OF STRUCTURE AND THAT PROJECT GAVE BIRTH TO MOZAMJAHI MARKET, CITY COLLEGE, USMANIA GENERAL HOSPITAL. THE ARCHITECTURAL STYLE INCORPORATED IN THE BUILDING UNDER CIB COME TO BE KNOWN AS OSMANIAN STYLE.

MOZAMJAHI MARKET LOOKED SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FROM THAT OF TODA, THE SPIRAL STAIRCASES AND THE VEGETABLE MARKET IN THE CENTER ARE LATER ADDITIONS BY THE NIJAM HIMSELF IN AROUND 1980’S THE PORCH EXTENSIONS BY THE CORNER SHOPS AND THE SMALL KIRAMAN STORES IN FRONT OF THE MEAT BLOCK WERE LATER ADDITIONS. IN FACT, A FEW TRADERS AT THE MOZAMJAHI MARKET SAY THAT NOT MANY KNOW THAT THIS PLACE WAS ONCE A HUGE PAN BAZAAR. THE FRUIT MARKET WAS SHIFTED TO KOTHAPET IN 1980’S AND SOME OF THE OTHER SHOPS TO BEGUM BAZAAR AND OSMANGUNJ. THE FAMOUS JAMBAGH FLOWER MARKET WAS A PART OF THE MOZAMJAHI MARKET BUT IT WAS SHIFTED TO GUDIMALKAPUR IN 2009.

THE STRUCTURE WAS BUILT IN UNDRESSED GRANITE IN ASHLAR MASONRY WELL DRESSED FLAGSTONE WAS USED FOR FLOORING. IT WAS ONE OF THE ABUNDANT MATERIALS WOODEN FRAMING WAS DONE FOR WINDOWS JACK ARCH ROOF WAS MADE OF BRICK IN LIME-MORTAR AND IRON GIRGERS, LATER PLASTRED WITH CEMENT GROCERY SHOPS WERE BUILT ONTO MEAT SHOP WALL OPENS INTO THE COURT. THEY WERE BUILT IN BRICK AND CONCRETE. THE CHAJJAS AND THE SUPPORTING BRACKETS WERE MADE IN RCC.

THE POINTED ARCHED FACADES: USED IN GOLCONDA FORT IN QUTUB SHAHI’S PERIOD THE BATTLEMENT WITH ALTERNATING MERLONS AND CRENELS FOR DECORATION/ DEFENCE WERE USED ON THE CORNICES OF QUTUB-SHAHI TOMBS AND MECCA MASJID. JACK-ARCHED ROOFING: USED IN BRITISH RESIDENCY 1797 – 1805 CLOCK TOWER: INSPIRED FROM EUROPEAN CLOCK TOWERS. DRESSED STONE WAS FAMOUS IN DECCAN ARCHITECTURE BUT UNDRESSED GRANITE ASHLAR MASONARY WAS USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THIS MARKET.

THE ADDITION OF TEMPORARY ROOFS OBSTRUCTS THE VIEW OF THE FAÇADE WHILE THE ABSENCE OF THEM IN SOME AREAS CAUSES DISCOMFORT FOR THE COSTUMERS. THERE IS NO PROPER PROVISION OF LANDSCAPING ELEMENTS LIKE STREETLIGHTS, BOLARDS ETC THE PARKING LOTS ARE PROVIDED INSIDE THE COMPLEX, i.e, AT THE FRONT SIDE OF THE TWO WINGS AND OF THE INNER CIRCLE THIS CAUSES A PROBLEM IN TERMS OF CIRCULATION, OBSTRUCTS PEDESTRAIN WALKWAYS. THE SIGNAGE BOARDS ARE FIXED ON TO THE CENTRE OF THE ARCHITRAVE, THIS OVERSHADOWS THE BEAUTY OF THE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS, DEGRADING THE ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FAÇADE. THE STREET HAWKERS SELLING EARTHEN POTS, FRUITS, FLOWERS ETC. ARE CAUSING ISSUES LIKE INTERNAL TRAFFIC. THE SEATING FURNITURE (PLASTIC TABLES AND CHAIRS WITH UMBERELLA FOR SHADING) DEMEANS THE AMBIENCE OF THE STRUCTURE..

MOZAMJAHI MARKET WAS BUILT IN 1932 BY THE CITY DEVELOPMENT BOARD DURING THE RE DESIGN OF THE CITY AFTER MUSI FLOODS IN 1908. NONE OF THE MARKETS OF THAT PERIOD HAD AN OPEN SQUARE WHICH WAS A UNIQUE FEATURE OF THIS MARKET. THE SITE IS AN INTERMEDIATE AREA WHICH CONNECTS OLD AND THE NEW CITY.
