Visual Identity Winter Wonderland’s visual identity celebrates two of Bed-Stuy’s most unique characteristics: a bold & vibrant culture that’s pushed culture forward through music and street art, and a rich history of ornate Victorian architecture that permeates the entire neighborhood. At the heart of the 2022 holiday market look & feel is a pair of dynamic “Ws”, which fluidly transform to become inclusive and approachable. They reconfigure and combine into various holiday decorations, from snowflakes, Christmas trees, and menorahs, to patterns that wrap the neighborhood with holiday spirit.

The team has collaborated to design market stalls & formal branding strategies, provide legal assistance to The BID, produce storytelling videos for marketing, and have introduced a trolley service to attract customers. These new additions have been included to further grow the Bed-Stuy Gateway BID’s annual event into a premier holiday destination for the greater Brooklyn community.

Outcomes and next steps

The Neighborhoods Now team intended outcome is to provide the Bed-Stuy Gateway BID with the tools required to grow and expand Winter Wonderland for years to come. In addition to revamped branding and Santa’s Hallow, the BID has successfully extended the market into Marcy Street utilizing the NYC Open Streets Program and have added a trolley service to transport customers throughout the district and bring the community together. Through this iteration of Neighborhoods Now, the Bed-Stuy Gateway BID will be able to use these design interventions and marketing strategies for future events, to increase partnerships for additional funding, and, most importantly, increase the BedStuy Gateway BID’s presence and value throughout the greater Brooklyn community.

Goals Winter Wonderland was originally launched through the first iteration of Neighborhoods Now. After two successful pilot markets in 2020 and 2021, The BID hopes to build this event into a larger and annual hallmark of holiday activities in Central Brooklyn with optimal space planning and expanded small business outreach. To support this goal, the team has worked to provide semi-permanent structures for the winter market, activate Marcy Plaza through holiday lighting, event specific transportation services, extended seating around the plaza, and increase community enthusiasm and engagement through advertisements placed strategically throughout the neighborhood. — Project Date

Santa’s Hollow Santa’s Hollow is a market shed in the shape of a four-pointed cross or plus sign. Each arm provides space to a Winter Wonderland vendor and in the center a vaulted space is created for Santa’s photo booth—a surprise awaiting you at the center of the market. The structure is designed using simple and mostly-modularized construction so that it can be disassembled and reused annually for BedStuy’s Winter Wonderland and other events at Marcy Plaza in fairer seasons throughout the year.
