Vision The Wild Project is a theater, film, music, and visual arts venue that presents diverse, engaging, inspiring, and entertaining works to the vibrant and growing community of Alphabet City in New York’s East Village. Founded in 2007, the Wild Project is an innovator among arts venues, providing an eco-friendly theater and gallery where the artists and space nurture each other. The company is dedicated to creating an environment that supports the artists, and to cultivating artists that support the environment. With an eco-conscious approach to presenting the dynamic works of hundreds of emerging artists each year. Due to COVID-19 pandemic the cultural space was forced to close their doors, leaving a play mid production and gallery shows on pause. The city's reopening plans place the Wild Project in an interesting position, able to open as a retail gallery but not as a theater. The Wild Project hopes to reopen their doors by taking initiative and proposing an outdoor theater program, similar to that of Open NYC Restaurants. With this in mind, the vision for the project is anchored on two timelines: the immediate opportunity to bring theater to the streets and the planning for future indoor theater re-opening. 1. Outdoor Theater The goal is to bring the theater outdoors, utilizing the sidewalk as a theater space for people to safely perform and attend shows. 2. Indoor Reopening Strategies

Understanding the limitations to indoor occupancies due to airborn viruses, the goal is to visually show possible ways to carry on with reopening in the future.

Swiss Institute The Swiss Institute is an independent non-profit contemporary art organization founded in 1986. SI is located 38 St Marks Pl, the corner of Second Avenue and St Marks Place in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan. Exhibitions include visual and performing arts, design, and architecture, with public programs spanning a wide range of topics. SI also has weekly public programming and education classes.

Through the Neighborhoods Now Intiative, the Swiss Institute requested HVAC and mechanical system upgrade support in the effort to create a safe re-opening strategy in several phases. Thornten Tomasetti as the consulting engineers provided mechanical system upgrade sugestions and advice to help support this task. 1. Identify HVAC system 2. 2. Call with Thorton Tomasetti

Discussion regarding Swiss Institute's HVAC models and COVID suggestions Swiss Institute's current units: 1. Split system: Variable, re-circulated system (do not bring in fresh air) .

2. RT ERU (energy recovery unit): Assumption that it’s bringing in outdoor air to meet regulations, the source of outside air for the building. If the ERU is changing 100% of the air this would be the best case scenario. 3. Heat curtain: prevents hot air / cold air from entering the space. Currently not in operation due to boiler system concern, no big impact on the space.

Summary TT recommended steps for HVAC updated regarding COVID-19 virus: Increase split system unit Increase the energy recovery unit Control humidity level Purchase supplementary filtration units UV Lights

Split System and MERV filter ratings: Main issue: Split system Mitsubishi unit (fan that pushes the air doesn’t have the capability to push a lot of air through "barriers" (filters). Split system units have low filtration MERV To switch up the filter must check with manufacturer if unit is able to handle a higher MERV (increase filtration). Fan capacity is lower power so it can only push air through lower filtration levels – barrier. Important to check with manufacturer prior to exchanging in order to avoid damaging the unit.

Anyway to increase filtration system is good in this climate – Contact manufacturer and ask how much you can increase the MERV rating for this specific unit. Additional suggestions: - Keep the units running 24/7 - consistently filtering out the air. - Human comfort 40-50%. It is recommended to keep humidity between 40-60% to control virus, below 40% is higher risk of propagating the virus. - Supplementary filtration Units: HEPA filters and increased MERV units, can be additional support to the HVAC unit and are typically affordable movable units – sit on wheels, etc. - Another suggestion/recommendation is to put UV lights: Can be mounted in units and duct work. Recommended to be installed in the ERU unit. Required extra maintenance – must check with unit manufacturer. Also have portable UV lights unit –they are not recommended to be "on" while occupants are in the space. Not a healthy idea.

3. Thorton Tomasetti COVID-19 HVAC Considerations Informational document: Shared with all teams from Neighborhoods Now that requested HVAC help, this document outlines the basic information regarding the upgrading and understanding of HVAC systems and COVID-19.

COVID-19: HVAC Considerations DISCLAIMER: TT is not aware of any measure that may be taken to prevent the spread of COVID- 19 or other such viruses. There are system enhancements that may be made that may assist in the prevention of spreading virus and other airborne contaminants. As such, the following statements shall not be construed to warrant or guarantee the performance of any building and/or any of its components under any circumstances, including, but no limited to an outbreak of Covid-19. In connection with any reliance on the information provided herein, TT and its owners, officers, directors, managers, officials, trustees, agents, employees, or other representatives shall not be liable for any exposure, infection, and/or spread of COVID-19, including any claims for personal injuries, death, disease or property losses, or any other loss, including but not limited to claims of negligence for damages, whether known or unknown, foreseen or unforeseen. Filtration Increased filtration will remove additional particulate from the air. Different levels of filtration will remove different size particulates. Filter performance is measured in MERV levels (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) as defined by ASHRAE. A higher level MERV filter will remove more contaminants by trapping smaller particles, for example, replacing MERV 8 filters with MERV 14 will result in a higher level of filtration. Certain HVAC systems allow for higher level filters to be used. This will generally depend upon the static pressure available with the fan profile of the unit in the system. Fans produce a certain amount of static pressure measured in inches, this is the pressure used for the air to overcome the friction from the system components such as ductwork, filters, dampers, etc. The manufacturer of the unit should be able to define the highest level filter that may be used, often it is defined in literature provided with the unit. Pre-filters are also a component to be considered, pre-filters are filters installed before the main filter. The purpose of the pre-filter is remove larger particulate that allows for less loading of the main filter and therefore extends the life of the main filter, pre-filters should cost less than main filters, adding to the economic performance. Filter systems may also be added to a space separately from the existing system. Stand-alone filters cord connected to convenience receptacles can simply be purchased. These portable air cleaners utilize HEPA filters or high MERV filters to clean the air in a single room or area. Permanent recirculating filter systems can also be installed, perhaps in the ceiling. According to ASHRAE, improve the existing filtration system to MERV-13 if possible. Humidification Studies have shown that viruses apparently thrive in lower humidity. Humidity is also apparently important to the occupant health. Therefore, humidifiers may be a component that will assist in a healthy indoor environment. According to ASHRAE, midrange humidity levels are associated with improved immunity against respiratory infections. While ASHRAE does not recommend a specific humidity target, the organization

notes that a relative humidity level below 40% is associated with a number of factors that increase infection. A research review published in the Annual Review of Virology stated that the ideal relative humidity for preventing aerosol transmission of respiratory viruses is between 40% and 60%. Humidifiers should be installed with ducted systems with care. Improperly installed humidifiers can cause corrosion of ductwork and ponding of water within the ductwork. Water in ductwork is a health concern as it can be source of contaminants such as legionella. Humidifiers may also be added to a space separately from the existing system. Stand-alone humidifiers, cord connected to convenience receptacles can simply be purchased. Permanent recirculating humidifier systems can also be installed, perhaps in the ceiling. The humidifiers themselves should also be regularly cleaned and treated to prevent growth of mold or bacteria. Ventilation Increased ventilation may be obtained using an existing system by increasing the percentage amount of outside air drawn into the system. Typical commercial office systems generally draw 20% outside air, this would mean that for every 100 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of air the system supplies to the space and then draws back through return, 20 CFM is replaced with outside air, typically drawn through an outside air louver at the unit. Typically the 20 CFM is simply not returned and is used to positively pressurize the conditioned space. Return air can be exhausted instead of recirculated back to the space, increased outside air would then be drawn to replace it. Increased outside air to an existing system would need to have an energy recovery component to offset the increased energy demand.

Disable Demand Control Ventilation (DCV) systems, which reduce the ventilation air when there are fewer people in the space than its designed occupancy.

UGVI Devices Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is a technology that uses light energy as the disinfectant. This energy damages the nucleic acids and proteins of pathogens, making them inactive and unable to transmit infection. These devices should be considered for high-density locations. Some UVGI units can be mounted in ducts or air-handling units. Portable UVGI devices are also available. Keep HVAC Systems Running Leave HVAC systems in operation for as long as possible in emergency situations, up to 24/7 if possible. Regardless of the level of filtration your system has, it can only remove particles from the air when the fan is running.

TT’s statements above are subject to change based upon the receipt of additional or updated information. subsurface conditions at the subject property and have been provided in accordance with the standards of skill and care generally exercised by other professional consultants acting under similar circumstances and conditions. No warranty, expressed or implied, is made as to the statements presented in this report.

Examples of energy recovery components that may be used include air to air heat exchangers, hydronic coils and energy recovery wheels. Air to air heat exchangers are large components that transfer energy from the exhaust airstream to the incoming outside air. The air streams are separated by plates (often welded) that do not allow air streams to physically touch. Heat is transferred from exhaust to intake air during heating season and from intake air to exhaust air during cooling season. The system requires space for the exchanger, which is large and connection of the supply and exhaust ductwork. Hydronic coil recovery systems consist of coils in the intake and exhaust airstreams connected by piping with a pump system. The pump circulates water through the coils. Heat is transferred from exhaust to intake air during heating season and from intake air to exhaust air during cooling season. Exhaust ductwork can be remote from the intake ductwork but large piping runs create energy losses decreasing the effectiveness of the system. Energy recovery wheels are similar to air to air exchangers in that the air streams must be adjacent. The energy wheel rotates with each air stream passing through it, similar to a filter. Heat is transferred from exhaust to intake air during heating season and from intake air to exhaust air during cooling season. Energy wheels can be installed as a component of an air handler and perhaps will be the most compact option, a concern of energy wheels is that the wheel physically touches both air streams.

The building is due for a renovation project to be funded by the City but it is projected to be in the coming years. Currently the performance space is hosted on the ground floor with flexible seating that allows for multiple seating configurations.

Currently the space is facing issues with neighboring construction that has blocked off some of the building's means of emergency egress. This has caused for the occupancy numbers to be lower prior to COVID regulations and is an important factor to keep in mind for the reopening plans.

Performance safety is key and limitations are applicable both to audience members and performers. Its is recommended that all performers are masked and remain 6ft minimum distance from each other; due to platform dimensions it is not recommended to have more than one performer on stage at a time. The first two options allow for seamless continuation of the cultural program and use of existing technical equipment. The third option suggests using an existing elevated platform as a stage, allowing to alleviate the theatre space for the audience.

Second of traditional layouts, calls for an amphitheatre like layout; before COVID-19 this layout provided a more intimate performances. Applying social distancing guidelines the layout allows for a single performer, spread out seating and view of performance from the bar.

Taking advantage of the existing conditions, this option suggests using a permanent elevated platform as the stage. This frees the theatre floor from platforms for more audience seating.

Pairing pods of audience members with a 6' distance between them allows for a maximum of 28 audience members. This would then require 1 performer and 1 staff member to achieve maximum occupancy.

Creating a similar set up to that of an amphitheatre can be conducive to a more intimate performance. With seats in pairs it maximizes the arrangement's capacity to 22 audience members.

Safest distance without a barrier from performer to audience allows for 24 audience members.

3. Circulation Strategies

Occupancy and Regulations Occupancy:

Circulation Strategies:

COVID-19 regulations recommend a 25% occupancy or below in order to limit the spread of COVID-19.

It is strongly suggested the venue pre-sells tickets and enforces assigned seating and timed entrances and exits. This would allow for safe and organized circulation of audience members as well as staff.

Maximum occupancy of the space before COVID-19: 120 COVID-19 reopening occupancy: 30 (suggested 3 staff, 1 performer, 26 audience)

From these changes and the COVID-19 regulations, the Cafe has shifted from depending on ticket sales to other means of fundraising. The shift re-prioritizes the reopening of the cafe away from ticket sales to focusing on being able to reopen as a cultural hub.

Bar seating is not recommended under COVID-19 reopening circumstances, due to a narrow circulation path to enter the theatre. If low capacity is desired, circulation can be closely monitored to ensure single direction use.

In the absence of state/city performance space re-opening guidelines, HLD along with collaborating design firms have collectively gathered information from other states to help inform our design suggestions. These suggestions are not based on any governmental directives and HLD cannot guarantee effectiveness.

Vision A decade ago, in collaboration with the BMW Guggenheim Lab, First Street Green reintroduced New York City to an empty lot and park in the heart of the East Village. For the past decade, First Street Green has cultivated a public space that not only brings open green space to a dense urban corridor, but also provides a platform for communitydriven, accessible, and ever-evolving art for all. Over the course of our team's visits and design studies of the park, we believe that the infrastructure of what makes this space great already exists today.

Our design proposals, rather than reconceiving of the entire park, exist as a series of projects that focus efforts on showcasing and giving room to the existing character and community that activate the site today. Scaled to be executed by a range of means and teams, from small weekend volunteer groups to larger capital investment projects, these projects are intended to be adaptable to the vision and feedback from the artists, gardeners, volunteers, and neighbors that already work with First Street Green.

First Street Green Today Observations & Opportunities

Nature and art are at the heart of the mission and character of First Street Green. Today, the park is already very successful in providing space for those two components. Our proposals build on the existing conditions, operations, and maintenance of the space today to create a long term, sustainable plan for operations.

NO SIGNAGE! CELEBRTE & ANNOUNCE UNIQUENESS OF THE PARK!

Smart Mural System

Standard plywood sizes and the simple method of mounting on existing chainlink fences via wire lashings are an efficient and operable system for mural rotation.

OVERGROWN GREEN = POOR MURAL VISIBILITY

A Bit of Everything, Everywhere

Robust planter space and maximization of mural surfaces combined with lack of maintenance has resulted in hidden murals, overgrown weeds, and a blurry sense of public space.

3 SIGNATURE MURAL WALL OPPORTUNITIES

Designed for Passing Through

Path width, lack of seating, overgrown plantings and weeds, and poor mural visibility all add up to a feeling that the park is meant for passing through or temporary viewing rather than a place to come and spend some time.

1. Rebuild Mural Walls Design Recommendations

The mural system on site today is already incredible smart - it's cost effective, minimizes labor, and lends itself to rotating exhibits. Our proposal seems to provide a sturdier frames and raised trims for murals to be mounted on, simultaneously defining more of an edge to the park, creating a more substantial wall for murals to be displayed on, and creating a catalog additional mural surfaces for FSG to deploy.

1. Rebuild Mural Walls D. Large Format Signature Murals

The two building faces along the 1st Street Entrace present a unique opportunity for large scale murals. Requiring a cherry picking or scaffolding, these murals will require a greater comitment of time and money to complete. These walls have the potential to be split to allow for ground level portions to be allocated for rotating murals below the more long term one.

2. Landscape to Showcase Murals Design Recommendations

First Street Green has a ten year legacy of providing green park space to the East Village. Our proposal continues that legacy while proposing a reconfiguration of existing planter areas to open up space for mural painting and viewing, stationairy activity, and socially distanced cirucaltion. The condensing of planter area along the mural wall also help minimize the amount of regular maintenance work required and the potential for visibility obstructions. The work required for this plan is to be completed with maintenance landscape and digging up and replacement of existing stone borders. 3. Invitations for People to Stay Design Recommendations

Currently, the park is a great urban detour for people to walk through and see murals on their way to another destination. To make First Street Green a destination cultural hub and park, we propose the park invite people to stay and enjoy the space with moveable tables, chairs, and furniture. This furniture can also double as additional objects for artists to paint in addition to murals.
