Herbal elixirs:
W
Oil of Oregano for cold and flu by Helen P et e r s o n
It appears the Italians may be on to something. Long regarded for their lower than average mortality rate (including less incidence of heart disease and cancer), our Latin friends over in Europe may be living the ‘vida loca’ by virtue of more than general healthy lifestyles. Could it be that the use of an abundance of herbs on pizza and in spaghetti sauce over in the old country is the secret to a life devoid of illness? Could the answer simply be the oregano generously sprinkled into and onto their delicious suppers? More specifically, it could be the use of Oil of Oregano, grown in the Mediterranean region. This herbal extract has properties that practitioners of natural remedies claim will aid or prevent a multitude of maladies. Cultivated from mountaintops, the oregano flowers are processed for their main ingredient – Carvacrol, and Oil of Oregano (at 75 to 85 per cent strength Carvacrol) is available at many stores and pharmacies, including Nutrition House (www.nutritionhouse.com). It usually comes in a liquid form, and users say between three to six drops in a small glass of water is the ideal application. But do be warned – if you have an aversion to Buckley’s mixture, oil of oregano is also an ‘acquired
taste.’ Strong and bitter, it’s a grin and bear it experience, but one that will grow on you! Product safety and efficacy (effectiveness) is foremost in people’s minds when trying a new health product. So it’s good to know that there are local laboratories that are involved in the testing and research of herbal preparations. BC Institute of Technology is at the forefront of natural product research. The school states that according to Health Canada, 71 per cent of Canadians use some form of natural health product (NHP) as part of their health care regimen—vitamins and minerals, herbal remedies, homeopathic medicines, traditional medicines, probiotics, and other products like amino acids and essential fatty acids. Whether a NHP is taken in the form of a bulk plant substance, capsule, tablet, liquid extract, or food format, it needs to be safe, effective and of high quality. It is important that analytical methods are developed to determine the integrity of NHPs sold for consumption. The research conducted at BCIT’s Natural Products Research Group (NRG) involves the investigation into a variety of NHP issues. These include the determination of toxic components and contaminants, the quantification of ‘marker’ compounds, and the analysis of medicinal preparations used
in clinical studies. In 2003, BCIT undertook a research project with Joy of the Mountains’ Wild Oil of Oregano, to test its integrity. Soon after, the product came on the market, and is widely available, as are several other brands. Finding that perfect elixir for you or your family’s needs is always a challenge. For the common cold or flu, some people swear by Cold FX, which comes in over-the-counter capsules; others say a combo of Vitamin C, Echinacea and zinc does the trick; still others believe that oregano oil with Carvacrol makes them feel better quicker and reduces the severity of symptoms. Whichever you choose as a natural supplement, use due diligence and research it first, or speak with a naturopathic expert. Buena fortuna!
Oil of Oregano cheat sheet Nutrition House quotes on its site about Joy of the Mountains’ powerful, natural antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial and antiseptic agent: • It’s beneficial for parasites, fungal infections, colds and respiratory disorders. • Anecdotal claims are also that Oil of Oregano disinfects and speeds healing of damaged tissue. Use it on wounds, cuts, blisters, burns, splinters and sores. • Oil of Oregano treats inflammation and pain. Use it on sore muscles and joints, first-aid injuries and tendonitis. • Its many medicinal actions also make it helpful for upset stomach, gas, nausea, cramping and other digestive complaints.

Walking the tightrope of teenhood by Jessic a K e r r , co n t ri b u t i n g wr iter
Everyone has been through it, is going through it or will go through it one day. However, those adolescent years bring with them a host of challenges for both teens and parents that can sometimes leave everyone feeling a little baffled. “Teenagers are... posed with the challenge of finding a balance between staying close to their family, particularly their parents, and then forging their own identity, and so depending on the health of that family that can be easier or more difficult to do,” says Vancouver psychotherapist Katherine Young, who runs Head and Heart Counselling. “So, if they are successful in forging their own identity but they have to sort of really separate themselves too much from their parents, then they’re left really vulnerable without that guidance. On the other hand, if they don’t separate themselves enough they’re left in sort of an infantile state where they don’t figure who they want to be.” It’s a delicate balance that’s made even more complicated by modern society. The overall health and strength of the family unit and upbringing during a child’s early years can have an “absolutely massive effect” on how young people make their way through the adolescent years, Young says. “One of the biggest questions I think that
comes up for teenagers and mental health is the structure in the family, whether there’s enough structure or too much.” A child that does not have enough structure will have difficulties developing the inner controls that everyone needs to prevent things like substance over use or computer over use, which, Young says, is a problem she is seeing more and more frequently.
“Just learning the basics of life takes some discipline and structure to do; nutrition, getting a little exercise, all those basics.” Too much structure can also hinder the transition from child to adulthood. “With too much of that, it’s kind of the same thing,” Young says. “The child doesn’t develop that internally. So, they can either go into a rebellion against the parents where
they’re still not really discovering who they are they’re just reacting against what they perceive as excessive control or they just stay in kind of a child-like state and not learn to take risks in the world and face their fears.” It’s a delicate balance and Young sees many families that are having a hard time walking that tightrope. It’s all about emotional needs and it’s the parent’s job to try and read that in their children, she says. That’s what forms the relationship and the connection between parents and child. “You can have all the discipline in the world and if ... there’s not a relationship to base that on, the kid’s not going to care.” Teens are stereotypically thought of as moody and driven by hormones. However, Young says it all has to be taken into context. “I always want teenagers to feel like their feelings, their behaviours have meaning and they make sense,” she says. Registered psychologist Dr. John Wagner says there are signs parents should keep an eye out for: social withdrawal; problems with basic functions, such as eating, sleeping and making it to school; and mis-use of substances. “Experimentation is normal in adolescence,” Wagner says. “It’s normal to expect kids to do a little experimentation.” continued next page

However, for some experimentation can turn into mis-use and abuse. While there are individuals at every age that can be affected by serious mental illnesses, the general teen population is most susceptible to anxiety, depression and substance abuse. Wagner says he also sees a number of younger patients who practice self-harm or are exhibiting suicidal tendencies. “If a child is exceptionally irritable, that can be a sign of anxiety and depression,” Young says. “If they withdraw from a more full life that they were living, from friends and from activities; if you see a change; if they were pretty good at doing their homework and then they stop; excessive crying.” These behaviours are not difficult to spot, she says. Parents should also keep an eye on kids that are involved in several clubs and after school activities and always strive for perfect marks to ensure they’re not pushing themselves too far and not enjoying their activities anymore. The adolescent years are also when control over things extracurricular activities and food intake shifts from the parent to the child. “For the first time they’re thinking,
‘Well, maybe I shouldn’t drink that Coke, it sure has a lot of sugar in it,’” Young says. “So they’re developing that inner control and some kids go very extreme with that, and that’s where you see anorexia or bulimia, that kind of thing. But they can be a little bit too much just black and white; it can be hard for them to hold a balance because it’s just so brand new to them.” It may sound a little cliché, but both Wagner and Young stress the importance of communication, no matter what. “One of the primary things is just
talking with kids,” Wagner says, adding parents should be up front with teens, ask open-ended questions and take the time to listen. “I think it’s really important to let your child talk to you about what they’re going through even if it puts you in an awkward position,” says Young. “I would advise parents to try and walk that line and try to manage that grey area where your child can still come to you and talk to you, but that you still have some behaviour limits around alcohol and substance abuse and sex and all that stuff.”

Walking for the Cause
Designs on a Cure
A new exercise program, designed to help women get back into shape safely and efficiently following breast cancer surgery and treatment, is growing in popularity. The exercise, called Balance Walking, or targeted pole walking, provides health benefits far beyond what normal walking can achieve and has shown to improve muscular endurance in the lower and upper body. This is particularly important to breast cancer survivors struggling with weakened upper body range of motion in the shoulder and chest areas. In order to promote the benefits of this unique exercise program, your local Balance Walking program has teamed up with local Cancer agencies and has rolled out a local Balance Walking Group at www.meetup.com/balance-walking/. In addition, Foot Solutions is selling Pink Balance Walking poles and donating $15 for every pair sold up to Oct. 31, to the Canadian Cancer Society. Stop by Foot Solutions in Kitsilano to find out how to get your very own pair of Pink Balance Walking poles; www. footsolutions.com/vancouver.
