Some Little Pet-xtras Dogs are so active that sometimes their joints hurt, or other non-life threatening ailments need attention. At The Pet Shop Boys on Cambie Street, you’ll find a great new spa and wellness centre for dogs. They offer a full range of services from grooming and “paw”dicures to massage or psychic energy sessions! Canine chiropractics and massage therapy helps prevent injury and lameness, improves the animal’s balance, and helps maintain a comfortable and happy dog. Reiki - translation, universal life energy - is an ancient form of alternative therapy where the practitioner uses energy to promote good health and relaxation in the client. Your prized pup is no exception. Times and prices for reiki and chiropractic massage run from 30 minutes to one hour, and from $40 to $120. Inquire within at 3080 Cambie St.; Tel: 604-569-3377; www.thepetshopboys.ca. One of the things I worry about when we go on vacation is leaving my precious cat Trisket all alone for a week or more. I can bribe an unsuspecting neighbour or relative to pop in for feeding and cat-box maintenance each day, but I’m concerned about the loneliness factor for Miss Priss. I’ve just discovered Kitty Kare by Deborah. It’s a boutique cat sitting and care service based in Vancouver. To help with your busy schedule, she can provide daily cat care and grooming visits while you’re on
vacation; daily cat feeding visits to your home while you’re at work; cat care and sitting for individuals traveling to Vancouver with their kitty, or transportation to and from the vet for your cat. Like you, Deborah and her team have a special place in their hearts for our feline friends. They understand that some kitties need (and deserve) a little extra attention, and it sure beats a boarding house! “If you are looking for somebody who is trustworthy to take the best care of your cat — Deborah is certainly highly recommended!” says client Nancy M. Go to www.kittykare.ca or call 604-813-4239.

Holistic Pet Care Tips for our Furry Friends
A veterinarian is your pet’s trusted advisor. Photo: News Canada
BATTE

If you are the proud owner of a cat or dog, you want them to be as healthy as possible, and live long lives free of problems. It’s not easy, but with planning, good nutrition and regular check-ups, your pet can be healthy as a… horse? The partnership you develop with your veterinarian is one of the most important relationships you will have as a pet parent, according to NewsCanada research. Here are a few simple steps that you can take to ensure your time with your veterinarian is time well spent. • Remember to get your pet examined annually, especially during heartworm and flea season. • Complete a pre-visit checklist consisting of a “nose-to-tail” examination. Check for any signs of limping, unusual skin irritations, bumps, coughing or vomiting.

Myth #1 - Obesity is rare among dogs and cats. Fact - 35 per cent of pets are overweight, underscoring the need to pay attention to your dog or cat’s diet to prevent health issues like heart disease and high blood pressure.
Myth #3 - All pet foods are created equal and one size fits all. Fact - Many generic brands offer “all life stages” products that do not tailor key nutrients like protein and calcium to health requirements of different ages - from puppy/kitten to mature adult. Look for a pet food that’s clinically balanced for age and needs.

• Monitor your pet between visits so you can flag any changes in their normal sleeping, eating activity or behavioural habits. • Develop a list of questions to ask during your visit. Veterinarian visits can sometimes seem overwhelming for you and your pet – keeping a list handy will help you stay on track and get the most from your visit. • Think about your pet’s health from the inside out – responsible pet parenting includes providing a balanced diet which meets the nutritional needs for cats and dogs to maintain their overall well-being. • Think holistically – your pet deserves the same attention as you do, so make sure you inquire about health, behaviour, nutrition, hygiene, allergies and vaccinations. Speak to your veterinarian for tips on essential at-home care so you can maintain the health of your pet between visits. Be proactive with your pet’s health. You’ll be glad you did.
Debunking Myths about Pet Nutrition
Myth #2 - Table scraps are a healthy and delicious treat for my cat or dog. Fact - What seems like a small treat could equal a whole meal to your pet. For example, to a 10lb cat, a 1-oz piece of cheddar cheese is like eating 3½ hamburgers for a 150-lb woman.

Myth #4 - I can’t afford to feed my pet the best quality pet food. Fact - For about cents a day for cats and 60 cents a day for dogs you can feed your pet the superior, precisely balanced, nutritious pet food. Myth #5 - Diabetes, blood pressure and heart disease are people, not pet problems. Fact - Poor nutrition and obesity in cats and dogs can lead to health problems like heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Info. courtesywww.newscanada.com.

Arthritis: Walk it Off Regular physical activity and exercise not only helps keep your joints healthy, it may actually decrease pain associated with arthritis. Did you know that you’re actually “feeding” your joints when you’re active?
Here’s how: cartilage, the tough elastic material that covers and protects the ends of bones, depends on joint movement to absorb nutrients and remove waste. So, the more you move your joints, the healthier they’ll become. There are other benefits, too - cartilage, ligaments and bone become stronger and more resilient. Whether it’s walking, swimming, gardening or golfing, the options available to those living with arthritis are varied.
Arthritis Facts
• over four million Canadians are living with arthritis • arthritis is not an old person’s disease – it can strike at any age • nearly three of every five people
with arthritis are under the age of 65 • there are more than 100 types of arthritis • more than 100,000 Canadians are diagnosed with the disease every year • there is no cure for arthritis . . . YET
For people with arthritis, learning to make it part of your life can be difficult. But learning as much as you can about your particular type of arthritis and actively working with your arthritis treatment team are two very effective ways of regaining control over your life. There is plenty of information, some specific to arthritis and some not, that can be very helpful to someone facing the challenges associated with having a chronic or lifelong disease.

results she decided to travel to Europe to learn how to teach it, and she founded Asthma Care Canada in 2006. Holly Truchan, a respiratory therapist, had similar results to Tom. She was referred to Christine as a test case by Vancouver Coastal Health. After just six weeks her doctor said ‘it was like she’d had a lung transplant.’ She states, “It saved my life.” Radical as the results may seem, it is backed by numerous medical studies. Scientific trials in Brisbane, Australia in 1995 and in Calgary in 2005 concluded that the method reduced the need for reliever medication by 90 per cent, steroid medication by half, and asthma symptoms disappeared by half in just twelve weeks. Those who reduced their breathing to normal levels were able to reduce their
medication the most. In 2009, The Mayo Clinic stated, “The Buteyko Method is the most promising complementary treatment for asthma.” Christine Byrne is finding impressive results with her clients here in Vancouver and on the Sunshine Coast. “Regardless of age or severity, they are again and again reporting improvement in their breathing and quality of life. We see improvements in anything from the first to the fifth week after starting the Buteyko program.” Asthma Care Canada is a pioneer in the introduction and deployment of The Buteyko Method in Vancouver. Tens of thousands of people suffer from it and the numbers are rising. Now a Russian treatment is being tried here that claims that the root of asthma is over-breathing. Christine Byrne, asthma specialist, Buteyko educator, and author of ‘Stop Asthma Naturally,’ reports on the startling evidence of two Vancouver residents who have been asthma sufferers since childhood. Her father, Tom, was in the hospital with severe, unstable asthma when Christine heard about Buteyko. “He was in and out of the hospital about eight times in 2005. They just couldn’t stabilize him,” she said. Having lost her mother to emphysema just months prior, she was motivated to find some way to help him. “I wasn’t looking for a cure, just something to help him breathe better,” she said. What she found was Buteyko. Since taking his first lesson, while in hospital, in January 2006, he has not had one attack. She states, “He has his life back, his medications are greatly reduced and his lung function has improved by 50 per cent.” “After 74 years of suffering, I am finally asthma free,” says Tom. “Everyone with asthma should learn this. It really works!” Christine was so impressed with the

Warm weather brings out the skimpy summer outfits and healthy, energetic people biking, hiking and playing in our city. That’s fun in the sun (with sunscreen of course!), and here are some ideas to help make exercising outdoors even more enticing.
Racquet Swatters Ready for some badminton this summer? Well, if you’re like most untrained players, the frustration kicks in really soon. Windy conditions, a very light, finicky birdie and a racquet head with barely the surface area of a grapefruit combine to make that game a real challenge. Enter Speedminton, an easy-to-set-up game that is comprised of two user-friendly, light squash-type racquets, an assorted set of three weighted, strong birdies (called speeders), eight small red cones for marking the playing area, speedlights for night play and an easy-to-decipher instruction booklet, all zipped into one handy carrying case. Locally distributed, the Speedminton
set sells for well under $50 and will provide hours of enjoyment, and plenty of exercise, to boot. (Being tennis players, we wanted to try it, and the side-to-side lunging itself provides a real cardio workout!) For adults, it makes a fun, recreational addition to a picnic or party. For kids, it’s much easier to hit the speeder than a conventional birdie; no net is required so you can take it to the beach, the park or even a parking lot! Larger sets are available for groups. Give it a swat by checking out www. speedminton.ca to order.
Beach Buns Osofit presents Bootcamp in a Box, the answer for gals and guys on the go. Fitness expert Robert Hepper has devised he correct exercise mix: cardiovascular exercise incorporating interval training to burn the highest amount of calories during the session, in addition with full body strength and core training to increase the individual’s metabolism. A simple, easy-to-follow nutrition and workout plan is included that is proven effective. Included in the Osofit Fitness
Package are a Demonstration DVD; a Bootcamp Workout DVD; six Osofit full-body workout cards; six Osofit abs workout cards; a six-week exercise and fitness evaluation tracker; nutritional guidelines and sample meals and their patented resistance tube. The Osofit Fitness Package can be purchased online for $89.99 at www.homefitnesspack.com, or by calling 604-729-2908.
Blade Runners
According to Tourism Vancouver info., the 10.5-kilometre (6.5-mile) Stanley Park seawall is rife with rollerbladers throughout the summer months, so this activity has not waned despite the cyclical nature of recreational activities. The seawall’s flat, paved path circles the entire park, and offers spectacular mountain, water and forest vistas, with plenty of spots to stop and take a breather. Adventurous ‘bladers can rent in-line skates (and accompanying safety gear like pads) from local operators including Bayshore Bicycles & Rollerblade Rentals (www.bayshorebikerentals.ca) and Spokes Bicycle Rentals (www. spokesbicyclerentals.com). Roll out this summer!
