Safe Fun, in the Sun Summer is a great time to get outside and enjoy the sun and fresh air. With greater exposure to UVA and UVB rays, however, it is increasingly important to ensure that skin is protected.

Clinique Sun SPF 45 Targeted Protection Stick ($21) at Murale, Oakridge (www.murale.ca).

Perveen Gulati, pharmacist and suncare expert at Murale, shares this summer’s must-know facts to keep skin best protected while having fun in the sun.

1 SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor and indicates the protection level of sunscreens against sunburn, referring to UVB rays only. Theoretically, wearing SPF 30 means it would take 30 times longer for the skin to burn with sunscreen than without.

3 Sunscreens work by absorbing or

reflecting the sun’s UV rays away from your skin, and provide both UVA and UVB protection within 30 minutes of application. Some ingredients to look for that cover both UVA and UVB include Zinc Oxide, Titanium Dioxide, Oxybenzone, Meradimate and Mexoryl XL.

2 All sunscreens are not equally effective against UV radiation. Factors that differentiate sunscreens include SPF, photo-stabilizing agents, water resistant versus waterproof and ingredients that protect against both UVA and UVB radiation, known as broad-spectrum sunscreens. Marine Collagen Relief Gel by Li’tya is a cooling reliever for a bit of burn.

4 Sunscreens can be tailored to suit

specific skin types: for example, those with dry skin can use almost any cream or lotion, but should avoid any formulations that contain alcohol, such as sport sprays. Customers with oily skin should look for oil-free sunscreens that are not too heavy in texture.

5 Always look for the Canadian

Dermatology Association (CDA) logo on bottles of sunscreen. Visit the CDA website at http://www. dermatology.ca/sunscreens/index. html for a full list of recognized sunscreens available in Canada.

Summer Buzz:

The Long and Short of It by Helen Peterson

For women of all ages, finding the perfect hairstyle that suits us is a constant journey. The straight or long-haired wavy look we sported in our 20’s may feel dated and tired now. The shoulder-length, curly style from the grad photo may have morphed into a present-day ball of frizz. The way our hair behaved in the past is irrelevant. We need a look that feels great, is easy to maintain and features the colour(s) or highlights that suit our age. Long, sultry hair in the Penelope Cruz style, or Jessica Simpson’s blonde locks — these may be ideals we aspire to, but if hair is dry, frizzy, over-coloured or full of split ends, no amount of fussing and flattening will really help. Plus, over-processing just makes the hair follicles even more battered and bruised.

With summer and its effects of sun, wind and chlorine doing a dry-out number on our hair, perhaps it’s time to consider a bold move — to a chic, short shape! Hairstylists say most gals can achieve the look, with the possible exception of those with a square face/strong jawline.

Discuss it with your hairdresser and find out — could short and sassy be on your style agenda this summer? Check out these pics for ideas.

And whether your new “bob” is wavy and flirty, or straight and cut on a striking angle, do take note — a short cut really accentuates the face. Think of actresses like Michelle Williams, Keira Knightley, Ginnifer Goodwin — and back in the day — Meg Ryan. Their short, sassy do’s draw major attention to their eyes and cheekbones.

School for Style If you’ve got the time, but not the budget, for a professional hair makeover, hair academies may be the answer. It also doesn’t hurt if you’re a bit of a risk-taker. While the process is supervised by a pro, the end result may or may not meet expectations. You wouldn’t expect a student chef to make pastries like in a French patisserie!
