up, up &

away

take flight, feel right compiled by Helen Peterson

Air travel is more popular than ever. With seat sales available on the Internet, last-minute deals and the Canadian dollar holding its own around the world, getting away has never been easier. But of course once at the airport, the fun begins, as in checkpoint Charlie at every turn, limits on items in hand luggage, long line-ups, etc. When flying, especially if changing planes and enduring a very long day, there are things you

can do to try to eliminate fatigue, jet lag and other issues. The Aerospace Medical Association (AMA), in conjunction with Air Canada (www.aircanada.com), has outlined some pertinent suggestions to help passengers “get there feeling good.” The most important piece of advice offered is that passengers requiring prescription medications should always carry them on board in their hand luggage. This is especially important if you are taking medication for heart disease, diabetes or seizures. This sounds logi-

cal but surprisingly some will forget and pack supplies in their checked baggage. As well, passengers with severe allergies should carry one or more EpiPens as they would under any circumstances. Jet lag is often associated with air travel, especially when crossing multiple time zones. The symptoms of jet lag are many and vary with each individual, but result mainly from the internal body clock being out of phase with the daily schedule at the travel destination. Sleep is also often disrupted, leading to additional fatigue. Adjusting to jet lag

is generally easier when travel is to the west, but most travellers adjust to the new time after a few days. Air travel, whether for business or pleasure, whether short haul or long haul, is safe and should be enjoyable. Understanding the aircraft cabin environment and planning ahead can make your journey more comfortable for the healthy traveller as well as the traveller with medical conditions or special needs. If in doubt, check with your physician or your airline. (cont. next page)

fresh carefree flying Follow these tips from AMA to help diminish the effects of plane travel: • Rest well before the flight. • Try to move your watch one to two hours toward the destination time before flight, if your schedule permits. • Eat lightly before and during the flight. • Once departed, reset watches and other activities to the destination time. • Drink water and fruit juices in flight and minimize alcoholic beverages. • Consider using caffeinated beverages strategically during the day to mask fatigue, but avoid use within four to six hours of bedtime when the effect may make sleep onset more difficult.

•W ear loose, comfortable clothing. Sockettes for feet will keep you cozy. • Schedule outdoor activities on the first few days at the new destination. Oxygen rejuvenates the body. • After arrival, adjust to destination time as soon as possible. • Limit naps to a single nap of 30 to 40 minutes or less. Go to bed and awaken at the appropriate time for the new time zone. • Discuss with your physician if sleep medication could be beneficial. • For travellers who scuba dive, it is advisable to wait 24 hours after the last dive before taking to the skies so as to minimize the risk of developing decompression illness, such as the bends.

Stay Flawless - on the Fly Whether your travel plans include a major vacation far away, or a short road trip in-province with the family, one thing’s for sure: there’s never enough time to primp along the way. Dealing with hair care and bodily hygiene needn’t take a ‘back seat’ however. With a little knowhow, busy women can be prepared for almost anything at a moment’s notice.

Drying or diffusing your hair in the morning can be a big inconvenience for any woman. Keep your hair frizz-free by leaving your conditioner on for two to three minutes longer than normal. This will calm your hair and help create the perfect ’do.

Avoid a frizzy, flat or boring hair day altogether by putting an emergency hair-care pack conveniently in your purse. Keep a small collection of hair ties, clips and bobby pins handy in case you have to change your hair in a hurry. You can look and feel good at all times by planning ahead. Take a few extra minutes the night before to plan convenient ways to make your day go by smoothly. Article courtesy www.newscanada. com.

fresh Have big dreams for your FOOD BANK UPDATE

You Can Help The Greater Vancouver Food Bank has needs all year long in order to provide the necessities to its ever-growing base of clientele – the hungry, the poor or those in transition who need a boost. And with school starting back in September, the organization has many initiatives that are geared at helping moms and dads in the city to provide their children with a healthy, nutritious breakfast and a bag lunch, thereby encouraging strong bodies, good learning skills and active minds. Here are some of the lesser-known initiatives that you can help with, for the benefit of the Food Bank (www. foodbank.bc.ca):

Fruit Tree Project The doctor was right about ‘an apple a day!’ The Fruit Tree Project connects people who have excess fruit from their backyard fruit trees with those who have the time and energy to harvest it. Most of the harvested fruit is donated to community organizations and individuals in need. The program also offers canning and pruning workshops to pass on skills which are quickly being lost in the urban environment. The Fruit Tree Project, founded in 1999, is a community initiative that

Plant-A-Row for Hunger The program encourages people to plant an extra row of vegetables in their garden and deliver the harvest from that row to their local food bank. Launched in 1995, the Plant a Row for the Hungry (PAR) goal is to help to feed the hungry by establishing PAR networks in every state and province in North America. In 2003, over 300,000 lbs. of produce was donated to food banks across Canada through the PlantA-Row Program. Drop-off location and time: Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society, 1150 Raymur Ave., Monday Friday 9:00am to 3:00pm.

Basics for Babies It’s well-known that getting a good start in life brings a greater chance of a healthy existence. And taking care of babies is of prime importance to this city’s generous helpers. The Basics for Babies program, founded and operated by JRFM in support of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society, assists families coping with the challenges of raising a young infant by providing them with needed food, formula and diapers. Organizers are specifically looking for donations of baby food, diapers, formula, pabulum, and of course cash donations are readily accepted!
