Remembrance Day 2010
We Honour those who have served
How Do We Remember? On November 11, especially, but also throughout the year, we have the opportunity to remember the efforts of these special Canadians. In remembering, we pay homage to those who respond to their country’s needs. On November 11, we pause for two minutes of silent tribute, and we attend commemorative ceremonies in memory of our war dead. In Canada, traditionally the poppies which we wear were made by disabled Veterans. They are reminders of those who died while fighting for peace: we wear them as reminders of the horrors of conflict and the preciousness of the peace they fought hard to achieve. The two minutes of silence provide another significant way of remembering wartime while thinking of peace. Two minutes are scarcely enough time for thought and reflection. As we pause and bow our heads, we remember those brave men and women who courageously volunteered for the cause of freedom and peace.

The important thing for all of us to remember is that they fought to preserve a way of life, Canadian values, and the freedom we enjoy today and often take for granted. Remember that the silence is to honour their sacrifice and memory. Info. courtesy Veterans Affairs Canada.

lest we
forget.
Europe WWII There is no love like the love between men who have been in action together. We saw each other under the worst circumstances. We shared a special bond. Front line soldiers of both sides, Allies and Germans, respected each other. We were all in the same boat. When the skirmish is over and you raise your hands in surrender, the victor didn’t shoot. BM Europe WWII I found the people who in the cities lived like people anywhere, getting by the best way they could. The people
out in the country were down to earth and more simple and much easier to get along with. SM
Italy WWII I remember Italy. We were slowly working out way up Italy in convoy and there were civilians walking down the road the other way trying to get out of the war zone. The thought went through my mind if only everybody at home could see this. It was terrible. These people had lost everything and they were just normal human beings. SM This photo shows the late Bill Doyle standing next to his Hurricane fighter plane in 1945, when he was 25. Bill crash landed three times. He was often asked why he did not bail out and use his parachute. “I am afraid of heights,” he said.
