VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

Meals on Wheels Celebrates 40, Times Four The Health and Home Care Society of BC (HHCSBC) is happily celebrating four very special volunteers who have served with its Meals on Wheels program for 40 years. Chris Croner, Shirley Van der Hoop, Jeanne Lewis and Doug Shaw were recognized for their dedicated service to the Meals on Wheels program, alongside

53 other volunteers and 18 members of the staff at HHCSBC’s annual Volunteer and Staff Recognition Tea, held on May 12 at the Family Respite Centre. Of the 18 staff honoured for their long term service, nine were appreciated for ten years of devoted service, including Shirley Park, HHCSBC’s Chinese Meals on Wheels service coordinator. Chair of HHCSBC’s Board of Direc-

tors, Tom Chambers, human resources consultant Janice Dungate, and volunteer manager Jill Howey were on hand to conduct the pinning story in recognition of these long-term service volunteers and staff. HHCSBC is infinitely appreciative of all of their incredible staff and volunteers, who are committed to ensuring that programs continue to thrive.

give a little bit South Vancouver Neighbourhood House (SVNH), located at 6470 Victoria Drive, can always use a little warm and friendly help with its Seniors Peer Support and other Volunteer Programs. Many valuable volunteers have enjoyed the benefits of volunteering, and have mentioned that, in addition to helping out, it is a pretty good way to meet other seniors and

connect to the community. So far, volunteers have helped as: • Friendly Neighbours (a one-to-one personal visiting program) • Hello Neighbours (a telephone visiting program) • Steering Committee Members (guiding the Seniors’ programs) • Information and Referral Assistants (helping with government forms, documents and applications) • Group Facilitators • Program Assistants (for the Thursday Wellness and Tuesday Social Seniors Programs) • Kitchen Assistants • Lunch Buddies (being matched with a new senior to help welcome

him/her into House programs) • Blood Pressure Readers and Schedulers (for the weekly clinic) • Entertainers • Speakers • Walking Club Coordinators • Special Events Teammates • Administrative Aides If you would like to volunteer in one of these areas, or would like to work together to develop another volunteer program, call Paula Khan at SVNH at 604-324-6212, or send her an email at paula@southvan.org. COLLECTOR’S ITEMS All Fired Up Over MoorcrofT What do Elton John, Tom Cruise, Leonard Lauder of Estee Lauder fame, Rod Stewart, Prince Charles, The Sultan of Brunei and The Queen all have in common? A penchant for Earl Grey tea? Perhaps, but all are collectors of world famous art pottery, Moorcroft. And fortunately, the company chairman will be in Vancouver on Thursday, June 10, from 4–7pm, for a special free event. He’ll be appearing at Atkinson’s, located at 1501 West 6th Avenue, corner of Granville (phone: 604-736-3378). Designers at Moorcroft have been inspired by Canada’s unique wildlife and landscape for many years and today Moorcroft is collected in over 24 countries around the world. The website gets over 10 million hits a year. Hugh Edwards decided to visit a number of key Canadian areas to meet Moorcroft collectors.

As you may know, Moorcroft is sold by many top auction houses including Waddington’s Auction House of Toronto, Christies and Sotheby’s, but anyone is welcome to attend the event at Atkinson’s. Canadian collectors, of which our seniors are a vast membership, will have a unique opportunity to meet Edwards and see how Moorcroft is made. He will talk about the amazing history of the company and its current designs. Moorcroft demonstrator Lesley Cartlidge will show how Moorcroft’s art pottery is tubelined and painted. Not surprisingly, the company has been using the same techniques since 1897. Edwards says that the company continues to be completely design driven. In the past 15 years Edwards has put together a very talented design team creating numerous award-winning designs.

Edwards said, “Every piece of Moorcroft is made meticulously by hand. Even today, in 2010, every single piece of Moorcroft is made and painted by hand. It is just one of the reasons people collect this highly coloured, astonishing art pottery. “Many people say Moorcroft pottery is so colourful that it’s like looking at stained glass. Moorcroft pottery frequently fetches remarkable prices at auction, with vases selling for as much as $50,000.” Canada is very special to Moorcroft because it played a critical role in helping the world famous art pottery firm to survive. A major reason Moorcroft remained in business was because of the huge support in the mid 1980s from Canadian Moorcroft collectors. David Simmons (who now works with Waddington’s of Toronto) helped to introduce special pieces ®

into Canada in the mid 1980s that was vital to the rebuilding of Moorcroft. Canadians have been actively buying Moorcroft for over one hundred years. In the mid 1930s – after the Queen, Princess Royal and Duke of York purchased Moorcroft rouge Flambé bowls, the Hudson’s Bay Company in Canada ordered identical Moorcroft pieces for numerous branches in Canada, requesting that people were told the pieces were the same as the pieces purchased by the Queen.

Edwards added, “Moorcroft is one of the world’s last independent art pottery firms. Most of its limited editions sell out very quickly. Once an edition has sold out, the shape is never used again. It’s one of the reasons Moorcroft has a strong market record at major auction houses across the globe, because the pottery’s value keeps climbing.” People wanting to join the Moorcroft Collectors Club should contact a Canadian Moorcroft retailer or visit www. moorcroft.com.

HEARING TESTS SET FOR

Vancouver

Free electronic hearing tests will be given on June 3, 4, 7, 8 at 2087 West 42nd Ave, Vancouver. The tests have been arranged for anyone who suspects they are losing their hearing. Such persons generally say they can hear but not understand words. Testing with the latest computerized equipment will indicate whether you can be helped. Everyone, especially those over 50 should have an electronic hearing test at least once a year. If there is a hearing problem hearing tests may reveal that newly developed methods of correction will help, even for those who have been told that a hearing aid would not help them. If you suspect you’ve experienced hearing loss, phone in for a free hearing test. Our licensed specialists are trained in the latest auditory testing methods. And we’ll be the first one to tell you if you don’t need a hearing aid. But if you do have a hearing loss, we’ll explain your results and provide you with a list of options. If you suspect even minor hearing loss, don’t let it go untreated. Book your free test now.
