festival hair three

how-tos

vitamindaily.com

With schedules packed with outdoor music festivals, breezy bohemian hairstyles are an essential component of our endless-summer look. Here, Gwen Nguyen, senior stylist and instructor at the internationally acclaimed Vancouver-based salon, Suki's, shares her tips for creating three lust-worthy coifs. Boho Crown Braid To add some grit, spray hair with texturing spray. Separate hair down the middle, with a center part. Working close to the part, start a low French braid on the right side. Secure ends with an elastic when finished. Repeat on the other side. Pull braids out slightly to open them up. Pull the ends of both braids, and crisscross them across the front of head to form a crown. Secure both sides with bobby pins.

Top Knot Spray hair with texturizing spray and lightly backcomb the front section around the face. Toss head upside down and tie hair into a high ponytail. Backcomb hair at the root of the ponytail. Twist hair into a messy bun and secure with bobby pins — the looser the twist, the messier the bun. For a whimsical look, pull out small pieces of hair around your face. 8

Flower Crown Place flower crown on head. Secure in place with bobby pins if necessary. Twist pieces of hair into crown for a romantic appeal. Set the look with hairspray.

wreck beach Amy Watkins | amyc_watkins@hotmail.com

Mini trampoline is a ‘fun’ workout, but three sports bras recommended by intrepid writer Like a trailer for a horror movie, BEACH SEASON IS COMING and is sending us flailing towards the gym like we’re trying to outrun zombies. And while exercise is a necessary evil, I have no wish to join the hordes of seawall runners I regularly watch stumbling past, wide eyed and grimacing, looking as if the end of the world really is nigh. So now what? Say hello to mini trampolining, a "fun" full-body, low-impact cardio workout that won’t help you outrun the living dead, but might put some bounce in your step. That “F” word intrigued me. And since my body shape, and blood type, is more wine barrel than six-pack, I hoped this could be the fitness regimen that gets me Wreck Beach ready. 10

Held at Seacity Fitness, a sunny new studio close to the seawall on Howe Street, the classes are known as “mini tramp” or “rebounding,” both of which would make excellent names for my autobiographical dating memoirs. Seacity Fitness is one of the first places in Vancouver to offer the class (Steve Nash has them too) and the studio’s owner Jackie Lede started them after seeing the fitness craze in New York. In the ’80s, mini trampolines were a popular sight — often abandoned in the corner after a couple of manic bouncing sessions. If you’re too young to remember, don’t worry — your metabolism is still your friend and exercise is not necessary. I arrived early and our enthusiastic instructor Kristen Adams let me bounce around like a kid. I immediately regretted not wearing at least three sports bras. Carried away by nostalgic jumping, I

had peaked way too early. Kristen, who developed the program with Jackie, explained that on mini trampolines we push down with our core rather than jumping up. What I lacked in core strength (current level: zero) I made up for in grim-faced determination. The session started off “easy” enough, but I was still ricocheting off the trampoline when everyone else seemed to be in sync. Toe taps and jumping jacks pumped up the intensity as Kristen told us to “race the pace” or “raise the pace” — I couldn’t tell because I was sweating out of my ears by that point. And just as I started to feel my legs turn to jelly, we came off the trampoline to do strength work. It’s like getting off a boat — my body was still moving — and I tried not to do a Bridget Jones-style face plant on the floor. It was a relief to turn the trampoline on its side and slump over it, clinging on with white-knuckles, as we strapped on some leg weights (really, we’re making it harder?) and worked our gluts using an exercise ball. I looked at the water views and visualized happy thoughts. But then I turned to my friend and she mouthed obscenities at me. She was smiling though. I think. I was sweating through my eyes by then.

.ca

Finally, sweet relief, we got to lie on the trampoline and do some cool-down stretches. Mini tramp is a great full-body workout with enough of a fun factor to attract exercise-phobes like myself. We were sweating, but still smiling. We’d done our hour of intense exercise and it was time to bounce. Or in my case, it was time to crawl home along the seawall like the walking dead, moaning and scaring small children along the way.

Etsy.com creative outlet for DIY

Bianca Chan | biancaschan95@gmail.com

Sales rep embraces her inner photographer through online sales. Photographer Manon Paradis is learning that a picture is worth a thousand words — and $40 on Etsy.com.

says with Etsy’s user-friendly interface and focus on handmade vintage and artistic goods, it’s a great outlet for artists.

For the past year, the multimedia sales lead for the Vancouver Courier, which produces #vansummerlove, has been leading a double life through her online alter-ego, MANOGRAPHIC — though photography has been a passion of hers since high school. Paradis

Whether Paradis is snapping photos of architecturallystunning highrises in Hong Kong or dreamy West Coast landscapes, she’s always got an artistic eye and camera on hand, even if it’s just an iPhone.

12

“I wanted to do something with all these photos I’ve taken and this is really rewarding, you

know, to actually have it on something,” Paradis said. That “something” eventually became what Paradis calls photo blocks. She notes there are some photos that will look good on blocks and others that won’t, even if they’re great on their own. Paradis starts by sanding down the blocks, sometimes stains them, and mounts the printed photo onto the front. She then covers the block with a glossy lacquer for a sheer finish. “It took a while for me to figure out the process, but now that I have it down it takes about two hours, start to finish,” says Paradis. Most of the blocks Paradis makes are original photos of landscapes and architecture, either of B.C. or taken on her travels. However, she also makes customized blocks per request. Having sold 20 in the past year since she started MANOGRAPHIC, Paradis says the operation remains small — for now. As for future plans, Paradis hopes to start selling her photo blocks at small craft fairs.

reads hot summer

Bianca Chan | biancaschan95@gmail.com

Believe it or not, there’s a whole lot more to read out there than Tinder profiles or Facebook posts. This summer when you’re heading for the beach or pool, grab one of these titles from Raincoast Books for a not-so guilty pleasure. Gena/Finn by Hannah Moskowitz and Kat Helgeson Gena is a recent high school grad. Finn is a wide-eyed 20-something with job prospects and a marriage on the horizon. The two are brought together online by a mutual love for a TV show.

If I Was Your Girl by Meredith Russo Like most new kids in school, Amanda Hardy is focussed on fitting in. When she meets easygoing Grant, Amanda is faced with a dilemma — because at her old school, Amanda used to be Andrew.

American Girls: A Novel by Alison Umminger When vulnerable Anna runs away with her mom’s credit card, the teen soon discovers Los Angeles isn’t as glamorous as it’s made out to be.

The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood Gottie H. Oppenheimer’s universe is unravelling as the fabric of her seaside town begins to fray. With time travel and quantum physics, her past, present and future are about to collide and someone’s heart is going to be broken.

The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi With a cursing horoscope, a politicallyconvenient arranged marriage and the fate of human and otherworldly realms hanging in balance, Maya must uncover the ancient mystery of the supernatural world of Akaran.

With Malice by Eileen Cook After being flown home by her affluent father to receive quality care following a fatal accident during her senior trip to Italy, 18-year-old Jill Charron is bombarded with lawyers and a press team. Trying to piece together what happened is forcing Jill to lose her grip on her sanity and once-perfect life.

The Growler Presents…

summer beer sippers to try right now There’s arguably no better time to be a beer drinker than summer. Oh sure, there’s winter, where you can cozy up in your favourite sweater, knocking back porters before the hearth, blotting out the cold nights in a mist of mirthful intoxication — but you’re locked inside! For months at a time! It’s gross. But then there’s summer, when fields and meadows become expansive patios and growlers become your most trusted accessory. And when porches are used to bask in the sun on lazy Saturdays, which work in tandem with any variety of well-crafted, light summery beers to melt away whatever stress or concerns are occupying your mind at that time. Summer’s a time for healing,

1

Bomber Brewing Park Life

Blonde Ale with Passion Fruit A tart and tropical blonde ale, Park Life is designed as a summer sipper for the beach, park, backyard or balcony.

2

Brassneck Brewery Ambiguation

Tart Belgian Wheat Ale Like all of Brassneck’s beers, this Belgian wheat ale might not be available all season and even then only in growler fills, but it’s worth tracking down. It’s medium-bodied, a little sweet and very refreshing.

3

for forgetting, for enjoying the spoils of life in Vancouver for that short period of time when the heat graces us with its presence. So you might as well drink some beer. These five brews are just a few of the great, flavourful summer sippers than can accommodate any (appropriate) situation this season.

Fuggles & Warlock Craftworks The Last Strawberry

Strawberry Witbier Last summer’s breakaway hit is a juicy, flavourful summer thirst-quencher. It’s a little sweet and a little tart thanks to the fresh strawberries it’s brewed with. Think you hate beer? Try this.

4

Russell Brewing Punch Bowl

5

Twin Sails Hefeweizen

Hefeweizen Port Moody’s Twin Sails have created what is for our dollar the finest locally made hefeweizen available. This is a crisp, medium bodied and very flavourful wheat beer, with notes of fruit and a little spice. Very approachable, very delicious.

Northwest India Pale Ale You need to have some appreciation for hop flavours to dig this one, but the combination of Citra, Mosaic and Amarillo hops create tropical, fruity flavours that could convert those that tend to shy away from IPAs.

Handcrafted pizza replaces hotdogs around the campfire

While it’s typical to see beards, plaid shirts and vintage dresses on Main Street, the natural habitat of the urban hipster, they’ve also been known to migrate to the wilds on weekends in search of ironic camping locations to take that perfect Instagram shot. And whether the weekend is enjoyed in a classic Airstream trailer or a 1950s-inspired canvas tent, one thing that doesn’t change is the need to eat. And while anyone can throw a hotdog on the end of a stick, today’s campers are a sophisticated bunch.

Campfire (or BBQ) Vegetable Pizza Serves about four Getting started Build a campfire and later create a bed of embers and stones beside it. Ingredients #vansummerlove caught up with Tobias Grignon, executive chef at Mamie Taylor’s on East Georgia Street in Chinatown, for some inspiration. Grignon says while his two boys are pretty adventurous eaters with impressive palates, their favourite meal is still pizza. Grignon advises finding a large, flat-ish rock with at least one smooth side. Place the rock directly adjacent to the fire and build a bed of coals around the rock. He says after about an hour the rock should reach about 500 degrees — hot enough to cook flatbread on. 22

1 lb, pizza dough (premade frozen dough from a bakery is fine) ½ cup cornmeal

1 lb fresh mozzarella, (bocconcini) chopped up 1 cob of corn, with husk 1 bunch basil

1 red onion

1 cup of tomato sauce or pizza sauce

1 zucchini

Sea salt

1 red pepper

Olive oil

For the toppings Drizzle the peppers and zucchini with olive oil and wrap in tin foil. Place in the embers on the fire for about 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, place the whole cob of corn and red onion directly on the

For the crust Divide the dough into golf ball-sized pieces. Using your hands, press and stretch the dough out into six-inch rounds (or whatever shape they end up). Put cornmeal on your fingers to make sure the dough doesn’t stick. Drop a very thin cornmeal-coated piece of dough onto the hot rock and cook for about 2 minutes on one side (pay close attention, it may need more or less time, as temperature is hard to control). Once one side has crisped and blistered, flip it to the other side. Immediately spread tomato or pizza sauce onto the cooked side. Place the cooked vegetables and a few chunks of the mozzarella on top. Cook for another 2 to 3 minutes and remove from the stone. Let cool, cut into pieces and serve warm.

Shop the farmers' market like a chef Now that you know how to dress for a farmers’ market, here are a few tips from chef Clement Chan of Vancouver's Torafuku on how to shop like a pro at your fave location. Go early. Yes, markets are usually on weekends, but set the alarm so you beat the foot traffic and have first dibs on everything. Slept in? Wait till the hour before closing when vendors are more likely to offer discounts. Bring a wish list. There are so many great booths and choices it's easy to get side tracked and forget to pick up items you really need (like that perfectly crisp bunch of baby asparagus). Look for items that are in season right now. Explore your options and check out all the vendors before the final purchase so you get the best prices and ingredients. Ask lots of questions about how 24

and where the food was grown, whether or not it's organic and get cooking tips and recipe ideas. BYOB (Bring your own bag) — even better if it's reusable and sturdy. Not only is this good for the planet, but it avoids cutting into the farmers' profit margins. If you're planning on purchasing dairy, seafood or meat, consider bringing a small cooler as well. Bring bills. Cash is king — and small bills and coins are best. Editor’s note: Thanks to the changes to B.C.’s liquor law, craft beer, wine and spirits can now be sold at Vancouver farmers’ markets so you might want to take along a shopping bag on wheels if you’re walking — those bottles of wine are a lot heavier than a clove of garlic and some lettuce.

A jug of wine, a loaf of bread — and thou. Those words, written by ancient Persian poet Omar Khayyám, who died in 1131, show just how enduring the idea of a romantic picnic is. Of course, in 2016, our choices have far outgrown a simple loaf of bread and an al fresco meal will often include exotic cheeses, fresh fruit and smoked meats and fish. For ideas for the perfect picnic and charcuterie platter, #vansummerlove turned to Jonah Benton of Benton Brothers Fine Cheese, which has locations in Kerrisdale and on Granville Island. Benton suggests a thoughtful charcuterie platter will include three cheeses, two meats, crackers — he recommends Lesley Stowe Rosemary Raisin Pecan — a few cornichons (gherkin pickles) and toasted almonds along with a small jar of Vista D’Oro Fig and Walnut Wine Preserve. Benton highly recommends the following three cheeses paired with elk and juniper salami and duck and apricot pate from Oyama.

St. Marcelin French, cow, raw (comes in a small ceramic dish making it is easy for picnics) St. Marcellin is a soft French cheese made from

unpasteurized cow's milk. The degree of runniness increases with age. It’s fairly mild in flavour with a pleasant lactic tartness on the finish.

Alpindon Creston, B.C, cow, unpasteurized, organic One of our favourite new B.C. producers is Kootenay Alpine Cheese Co. from Creston. They produce true “farmhouse” cheeses, which means they raise and milk all the animals on the same farm as the cheese is made. This gives them unprecedented quality control over the entire process. Following centuries old tradition this cheese is hand-rubbed and made only with milk from summer pastures. It exhibits a smooth nutty flavour and a complex finish.

Comté Arnaud Reserve France, cow, raw This producer ages his cheeses for 18 months producing a rich and full flavor with a slightly granular texture due to the crystallization of some of the milk proteins. When we cut open these big 40kg wheels there are aromas of nuts, honey and wildflowers. It pairs well with both reds and whites, providing the wine has good acidity and floral/nutty undertones and, in the case of the reds, that the wine is not too heavy or tannic. 25

Whether you’re feeling energetic or walking off a hangover, there’s a hike for that. Maybe you over indulged on Earnest Ice Cream after work or enjoyed a hangover brunch at Vera’s Burger Shack Saturday morning and now you’re looking for a way to walk or run it off. To help in your quest, #vansummerlove has compiled some fave hiking spots within the city or just a short drive or easy transit ride away. So shake off that fog, slip on those kicks and get walking.

UBC Endowment Lands and Pacific Spirit Park, Vancouver For a nearby getaway, head down to the University of B.C.’s Endowment Lands for a taste of a true and natural temperate rainforest. It’s a moderate route, making it ideal for mountain bikers, dog walkers and runners. There are several intersecting trails that crisscross Northwest Marine Drive and West 33rd Avenue, west of Camosun Street. metrovancouver.org

Whyte Lake, West Vancouver Find old growth trees and feel the burn in your legs as you hike up to the Whyte Lake Trail, just outside of Horseshoe Bay. With free parking and easy access, you can work up a sweat and cool off at this small, peaceful getaway just outside the hustle and bustle of the city. westvancouver.ca

Lynn Headwaters Regional Park, North Vancouver Being the largest of Metro Vancouver’s regional parks, Lynn Headwaters boasts several all-level trails varying in distance, so there is really no excuse not to go. The Lynn Loop is five-kilometers of moderate hiking and is a great alternative to the always-busy and more expensive Grouse Grind. Tip: Hike up 10 minutes past the lookout sign for great views of Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands. vancouversnorthshore.com

Lighthouse Park, West Vancouver Lightouse Park is the epitome of West Coast scenery, home to acres of old-growth Douglas Firs and coastal views of the Pacific Ocean atop towering bluffs. Local favourite trails include the Valley of the Giants and Beacon Lane. lighthousepark.ca

Want to sunbathe in the nude? Splash around with your pooch? Swim with your kids? There’s a beach for that Vancouverites are spoiled when it comes to this city’s beaches and, no matter what your scene, there is literally a tiny piece of sandy heaven waiting for you, sunblock, cold-brewed coffee and kale chips in hand. You have kids — there’s a beach. Like to swim naked — there’s a beach. Love your fur baby more than life itself? You guessed it, there’s a beach for that.

For people watching

The following are five beach recommendations from #vansummerlove to you.

For kids

English Bay offers up some of the most eclectic, and therefore best, people watching right downtown. Bonus: it’s close to tons of awesome restaurants including Kingyo, Babylon Café and Cactus Club Café — all highly recommended for date night.

Kits Beach is one of Vancouver’s most popular beaches for a reason. It’s extremely accessible, has a playground, pool, basketball courts, swimming raft and is near several restaurants. There are plenty of activities to tucker out your kid, what more could you ask?

For dogs You’ll be sure to meet lots of pups and shake their paws at Spanish Banks’ off-leash dog park, open daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

30

Trout Lake Beach This lesser-known beach has an off-leash dog area open from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. — 3300 Victoria Dr. Hadden Park Beach Just around the bend from Kits Beach is Hadden Park, where dogs are welcome to swim, pee on logs and chase birds.

For sunbathing in the nude Wreck Beach is the obvious, and only, choice when it comes to clothing-optional beaches in Vancouver. Free the nipples, cheeks, or whatever else you fancy, at Pacific Spirit Park below UBC campus.

For water sports Jericho Beach offers stand-up paddling, windsurfing and skim boarding. Double and single kayaks are also available when you want to paddle along the banks of Point Grey. Tip: For the landlubbers, Jericho also has soccer and baseball fields, while Jericho Beach Park has public tennis courts.

beyond Tinder sandra thomas | sthomas@vancourier.com

Single and looking? Check out these dating apps Happn Leave it to Paris to give us a whole lot of what we love — macrons, Hermes, the Louvre — and now the latest and, some say, greatest dating app. Happn, which recently crossed the pond to launch in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, is the first dating app to use your location and work in real time. Forget messaging someone for months before meeting. Now, when you cross paths with that hottie from Starbucks or any other Happn member, their profile will pop up on your app. Once you set up

a profile, your home page will show every user you’ve crossed paths with — and how many times. If you “like” someone’s profile, then it’s a match and you can just start talking — you remember how that works, right? Happn also helps eliminate bottom-feeding catfish.

Bumble Here’s an app that allows women to make the first move — how refreshing. By using Bumble, women have all the power and guys can’t contact you until you’ve reached out. And if you're a woman seeking a woman, even better. Think Tinder, but with fewer neck beards.

Wyldfire Much like Bumble, Wyldfire is all about women. To take part, a man must be invited by a female friend who is basically vouching for him.

The League It’s been accused of elitism, snobbery and high expectations, but the League’s members wouldn’t have it any other way. No one wants to “settle,” so the League carefully chooses its members after they apply. The app searches through the Facebook and LinkedIn profiles of friends of friends to find the perfect match, saving you from attending that awkward dinner party. One you apply, and are accepted, you'll get five matches per day.

SWEATT OK, Vancouver singles, if ever an app was created for you, this has got to be it. SWEATT caters to millennial exercise freaks looking to meet the same, so you better be honest about your fitness level because no amount of lying is going to save your butt once you’ve headed to the Grouse Grind. 34
