At Harrison Hot Springs, it’s all about the water — either getting in it or on it. The beach and marina on Harrison Lake offer lots of other ways to get wet, from swimming to renting boats, sea-doos or motorized bumper boats. Even without the snow and skis, the trip to the top of the mountain is worth it. The Peak 2 Peak gondola connects Whistler and Blackcomb mountains via 4.4 kilometres of cable high above the ground, giving you a stunning view of Whistler and its surroundings. Hop on a ferry in West Vancouver and 40 minutes later, you’ll trade big-city bustle for the relaxed pace of the lower Sunshine Coast. The area, which stretches 85 kilometres from Langdale to Egmont, gained fame in the 1970s on the long-running CBC show The Beachcombers. But it’s better known now as an easy getaway from the Lower Mainland with lots on tap during the summer, from outdoor activities to cultural events.

The Beachcombers — its big yellow façade is the first thing you’ll see when entering the town of Gibsons. It’s a nice spot for a casual lunch or dinner with a great view of the marina below mollysreach.ca. Sunshine Coast is an outdoor lover’s paradise. Hiking trails abound, from the 45-minute trail up to Soames Hill in Gibsons that offers a stunning view at its apex to the multiple trails past creeks and waterfalls in Roberts Creek’s Cliff Gilker Park.
At the top of the coast near Egmont, don’t miss Skookumchuck Narrows Provincial Park. A flat four-kilometre hike takes you to a grassy hill where you can drop a blanket and watch tidal rapids collide in an awesome display of nature’s power. Make sure to check the tide tables online before you go for the best viewing times. If you’d rather be on the water, you can rent a kayak or a canoe from several local outfitters, hire a fishing guide or throw out a line on your own (with a licence). It takes two ferries to get there but that’s why residents and visitors love the Upper Sunshine Coast —they say it keeps the Sunshine Coast Trail (SCT) pristine and unspoiled. With the exception of downhill skiing, “Powell Riviera” (as it’s fondly called by residents) seems to have it all, and the town is drenched in history—the Patricia Theatre opened its doors in 1913, there are nearly 400 heritage buildings near the mill and the Townsite is one of the few designated National Historic Districts in Canada.

Grab a Growler at Townsite Brewing, the Sunshine Coast’s first craft brewery in the Powell River Historic District. Costa del Sol is nothing short of vibrant, from Latino food (outstanding fish tacos with homemade flour tortillas) to funky décor in a converted 1900’s police station. And the patio has ocean views. Kids love Rocky Mountain Pizza and Bakery Co. offering terrific baked goods and the chance to catch up on your daily newspapers. Southern less traveled Vancouver Island a route
If you’re the type of person who doesn’t like going back, the Pacific Marine Circle Route, from Sooke to Port Renfrew to the Cowichan Valley (also known as Canada’s Provence) is for you. Amazingly, it’s still a route less traveled. In the not-toodistant past much of the route was logging roads; now it’s a smooth ride. The coast to coast journey covers spectacular coastlines and pristine beaches, provincial parks and pastoral landscapes, wineries and restaurants and luxurious Inns.

For a square meal and square deal Mom’s café in Sooke will make you feel at home or Markus’ bistro on the wharf serves up – you guessed it—local seafood. More upscale is the world-famous Sooke Harbour House, where part of your dinner comes from their gorgeous edible gardens—the resident gardener offers tours. Go for the tasting menu, each course perfectly paired with B.C. wines. Heading toward Port Renfrew is Point No Point , where smoked oyster chowder spiked with house-cured bacon has been a staple for 20 years.
