EDITOR'S NOTES
Self vs Society In a recent episode of a podcast called “No Stupid Questions,” hosts Stephen Dubner (co-author of “Freakonomics” [William Morrow, 2009]) and Angela Duckworth (author of “Grit” [Scribner, 2018]) considered the question, “Is Self-Improvement Too Selfish?” They debated the virtues of focusing more on improving oneself versus improving society. At one point in the podcast, Duckworth argued that improving oneself is simply more tangible. “Well, the world is complicated, and there’s all this stupidity, and there’s politics, and there’s almost nothing stupider than politics. And people fighting each other over small things, not for the greater good . . . For better or worse, and I guess I could be criticized for this— I am criticized for this—I just find it more useful to focus on something that I can change. And maybe . . . I’m kind of at a loss for how to change these structural things, which I agree are bigger.” Dubner good-naturedly argued that, while self-interest is vital at some level, perhaps individuals who are seeking self-improvement over societal change may be people who are already advantaged to begin with, and that a focus away from simple self-improvement and toward altruism or “self-transcendence” is necessary to make real changes for lots of people. In the end, the hosts agreed that, in truth, self-improvement and societal change go hand in hand. “If you look at truly happy people,” Duckworth said, “and if you look at people who make the world a better place, they are the same people. And what they do is they pursue self-actualization, self-awareness, excellence, in the service of others, not the self.” Our most limited and least renewable resource is our time. Are we spending it in pursuit of making life better for our families and for our communities?

NAACP
Vancouver Branch and Clark County Historical Museum (CCHM) recently partnered to create a new outdoor exhibit titled “Black History Highlights of Southwest Washington.” The exhibit was installed just outside CCHM’s front entrance and is free and accessible for all to view. It details the experiences and accomplishments of notable Black residents of Clark County in a timeline format from the 18th century to the present day. Early explorers featured and celebrated in the exhibit include York, who was an enslaved man owned by William Clark, and a member of the Corps of

Modern individuals featured include Jordan Chiles, a graduate of Prairie High School in Vancouver and member of the women’s Olympic gymnastics team, who won a silver medal at the games in Tokyo, Japan. NAACP and CCHM members and officials, and various community members, gathered at the museum on February 18 to dedicate the exhibit, which was created by local historian and artist, Claudia Carter. The exhibit will be on display through 2024.
Vancouver Teen Selected to Experience DISNEY DREAMERS ACADEMY
Disney Dreamers Academy, a four-day, immersive educational mentorship
program created and hosted by Walt Disney World Resort, recently marked its 15th year of broadening career awareness and creating exclusive opportunities for Black students and teens from underrepresented communities across America, and Skyview High School sophomore Simmi S. was one of the 100 high school students selected, out of thousands of applicants, to take part in the program’s Class of 2022. Simmi learned about the program through Instagram. “I choose to apply because even before I knew about [Disney Dreamers] I had an instinct to create and innovate with art. My art started from a young age with oil painting and later expanded to using Adobe Photoshop and digital art. I also love fashion, watching fashion shows on YouTube and learning about the design process.” Her fashion designs have already sold in high-end streetwear stores in Portland and Los Angeles, and she has even founded her own fashion company, Tints. Disney Dreamers Academy provided her an opportunity to take Tints to the next level, through career-building workshops, networking sessions, scholarship opportunities, mentorship connections and introductions to future professional opportunities—all occurring during an all-expenses paid trip to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida for Simmi and the other selected students (along with their parents) in March 2022. The trip was “one of the best experiences in my life,” Simmi said. While there, among many other activities, she was chosen to shop with noted designers and stylists, Misa Hylton and Jerome Lamaar, and create looks for a fashion show. She now has contacts and networks that can help in her career development for years to come. Follow Simmi’s fashion on Instagram at @tints_ or at tintsstreetwear.com. Skyview High School student, Simmi S. (bottom photo, third from left), was recently selected to travel to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida to participate in the 15th year of Disney Dreamers Academy.

YurtsAndCabins Simplifies Specialty Camping Reservations with New Website

Just in time for summer travel planning, YurtsAndCabins recently introduced a web mapping application featuring 100+ Pacific Northwest parks with bookable yurts or cabins for easier camping. Following curated links, users connect to official park websites, their campground reservation systems—which may otherwise be hard to find—and to a popular website with plenty of photos and reviews. “YurtsAndCabins helps vacationers plan a more homey trip, where they can settle in comfortably amid acres of parkland,” said Bob Poulsen, lead developer. “Options range from a basic teepee at Clyde Holliday State Recreation Site near John Day, to fully outfitted glamping tents at Moran State Park on Orcas Island, to over 50 parks with a wide variety of reservable cabins.” Each location is within a publicly run park in Oregon and Washington. The sites include national parks and forests, state parks, county parks and regional parks. As a bonus, the map shows over a dozen historic lodges on state and national land. The map view can be filtered to show any combination of yurts/cabins/ lodges. And the base map can be switched between street maps, USGS topographic or USGS aerial imagery. For more information, visit the site at yurtsandcabins.com.

Having spent two charmed weeks
enjoying the water, the beaches, and the company of friends in beautiful Bahia Tenacatita, we picked up anchor and had a lovely sail down the coast to Barra de Navidad. Our 7-year-old daughter, Kali, took the wheel to steer us out of the anchorage and she kept it through the process of raising our sails and sailing for the first couple hours. I love that our lifestyle is instilling a sense of wonder and confidence in our children. I watched in awe as she boldly took the helm to maneuver our 30,000 lb. sailboat all on her own, weaving carefully between boats and then heading into the wind to raise the mainsail.

The cruising community thrives here with options to stay in a marina or anchor in a well-protected lagoon. There’s an established support system and the town can provide nearly anything a sailor may need. It's one of those places that we call “sticky”; we could see ourselves staying here long term. But the boat is meant for moving and we aren’t ready to settle anywhere just yet. So, after a week in Barra, we wove our way back out the narrow channel to the wide-open Pacific and turned south once more.
There are moments when it just hits me—the enormity of what we’re doing. I’m proud of our family, our kids, my husband and myself. This is something pretty cool.
Just 20 miles further down the coast, we stopped for a night in a small, picturesque cove called Carrizal. The internet connection in this bay wasn’t stable enough for me to work the next day so we picked up anchor again and moved a few miles around the point to anchor for the work week in Bahia de Santiago.
The splendor of Barra de Navidad took us by surprise and this town has become our favorite stop on the Pacific Mexico coast. The Mexican people in Barra are generous and kind, the food is quite delicious, the town is colorful and quaint and the setting is simply stunning.
The anchorage in Bahia de Santiago boasts a famous shipwreck from 1965, the 300-foot long San Luciano. The ship was damaged hitting rocks nearly 40 miles away but was able to make it to the shallow waters of Bahia de Santiago before it was determined that she was too damaged for repair, and sunk. We snorkeled on continued on next page

the wreck one morning and were extremely impressed with the diversity of fish that we encountered, despite the poor visibility. This is an area that we’re very excited to return to next winter to see again. After Bahia de Santiago, we returned for the weekend to Carrizal and loved the rugged beauty and isolation to unwind for a few days. The next week, we anchored for several nights in the bay at Las Hadas, at what would turn out to be our southern-most turning point for this winter’s journey. From this point, we’ll now be heading back north again, slowly making our way back up into the Sea of Cortez to visit the inside of the Baja Peninsula and beyond.
Rachel Messerschmidt and her family are Clark County natives living and cruising full time aboard their 40-foot sailboat, Mosaic. In the fall and winter of 2021, they traveled down the US West Coast and Mexico’s Baja Peninsula. Crossing the Sea of Cortez in December, they continued south down the Mexican mainland coast until February. Rachel shares her family’s adventures on her blog at www.mosaicvoyage.com and on Facebook and Instagram @mosaicvoyage. She writes a monthly column in Vancouver Family Magazine. Feature: Vancouver Dragons Shoot for Success Part 1 of a 2-Part Series on Local, High-Level Basketball
Shoot for Success By Kristen Flowers
The referee’s whistle
bounces off his black and white striped shirt as he dribbles the basketball. The sound of the ball hitting the polished wooden floors gives the gymnasium its own heartbeat, making it feel as if it’s alive. Loud pop music blares throughout the room as the basketball players on the Vancouver Dragons finish their warmups. They pat each other’s backs, smile and nudge one another. Some even go to the opposing team, shake hands and talk like good friends catching up. The ref dribbling the ball takes a shot. It flies through the air towards the basket but bounces off the rim of the hoop, making a sound that can only be made when something solid crashes into metal. There is laughter and smiles on the court, even from the referee who took the shot. Some gentle ribbing is exchanged between the men, but a strange quiet fills the gym. A buzzer sounds and the basketball players head to the court. The smiles are gone and the patting on the backs and handshakes are over. With no fanfare, no national anthem or cheerleaders, a whistle is blown, the ball is tossed, and the game begins. The players run from basket to basket, their shoes squeaking on the shiny floors. The players call out to their teammates, the ball smacks hard on the ground when it’s stolen by the other team. Everyone watching the game hopes to hear that all too familiar swish of the basketball going through the hoop, and they do. A lot. A lone local fan is watching intensely from the sidelines; she has come to support her friend who plays for the Dragons. “When you know the people individually, it’s a lot better,” she tells me. Whether it’s the thrill of having a real friend to root for or because it feels like you’re watching a professional game, either way, this fan, who prefers not be named, clearly gets quickly absorbed in the fun of it all. “It’s intense for me ‘cause I’m all into it,” she goes on. “So I’m half on the court, or I’m screaming. Maybe just being

here, the atmosphere, you get real-life facial expressions and body language.” All of this takes place in what looks like an airplane hanger, surrounded by industrial buildings in the middle of Chehalis, Washington. Driving by, the average person would have no idea that a fierce basketball game was happening inside. But this is more than just a basketball game. To the men playing, this is a chance to make a living doing something they love. “Some of these guys, they know they won’t make it in the NBA, but they still want to play at a high level, so we want them to be able to do that. And by coming through programs like mine, they have the opportunity to get film and stats, and that’s what teams overseas want to see,” says Marcus Stancil. Marcus “Doc” Stancil is the CEO of JAMS94, Inc. He owns three minor league basketball teams, including the Vancouver Dragons. For years, running these teams has been a labor of love for him and it’s his ultimate passion project. So much so that he funds the nonprofit out of his retirement when continued on page 26

sponsorships are not available. “We don’t like having our guys pay. We try to take care of as much as we can because they represent our brand, so why have them pay out of their pockets for something that they are representing me for?” Stancil explains that overseas teams are anxious for American players, but they recruit to get the best. To get noticed by one of these teams, a player needs to practice, they need to show they can work in a team and have good statistics and video to back up their hard work. That’s why playing on a minor league team like the Vancouver Dragons can launch a player’s career. “The purpose of this was to help young men get that opportunity to go overseas and further their careers. Since we’ve started, we’ve had several [players] go overseas. Now we have one in the U.K., one just went to Indiana to play for their basketball league. We had one go to Panama and won a championship, and we had one play in Italy and won two championships,” boasts Stancil. This is precisely the type of career basketball that player Allen Billinger is hoping for. “Being a professional overseas just proves to yourself that hard work does pay off, and then you can be a hope for someone else who has the same dream. That’s what it is, and it’s a dream. You want to be a dream chaser,” explains Billinger. After playing overseas for a while, Stancil says many of his players have come back to start their own business or go off to college. He says, “It makes a person like me very proud to see them do things like that.” For some of these men, basketball is the jump start they need in life, which is something Stancil can relate to. “Growing up in North Carolina, it’s one of the outlets that we had. You stay off the streets and you stay out of trouble, and it gives you that sense of teamwork and the opportunity to develop not only physically but mentally because it’s a thinking game. A lot of people don’t believe that, but it is,” shares Stancil. That’s what brings Davis Thurston, head coach for the Vancouver Dragons, to the basketball court. Thurston believes, “It’s your ultimate never-stop-getting-better playground.” With a history of family members as basketball coaches or players, Thurston has spent

13 years officiating basketball and has no plans to stop. “Everyone’s got a different reason to be out here on the court. For some guys, they love the mentorship aspect of it, and some guys just love seeing the game and love being in a competitive environment.” It’s evident from the smile on Thurston’s face that the competitive nature is one of the main reasons he’s decided to coach the Vancouver Dragons. “There is always something to work on. There’s always something you can learn, whether it’s communication with your teammates, humility after a loss, or the dedication that comes with being a good basketball player and working on your skills. It’s a playground for constant improvement.” That constant improvement can come from the court itself, or one of the many opportunities that being a Dragon can present. Richard Howard started off as a player but now does double duty as general manager for the team. In addition to scoring on the court, he scores players for upcoming seasons, securing home gym and practice locations and sponsorship opportunities. For Howard, it was simple. He tried different sports growing up, but basketball was the one he always stuck to. He knew some of the Vancouver Dragons players, and after getting cleared by Stancil to come out to the court to play, he settled into a spot on the team. Quickly, he saw continued on page 28

how much burden fell on the players to get things done, so he began to take the initiative to organize it all. Soon he was officially asked to help run things. “As I got older, I realized there were more opportunities basketball-wise. That kinda was my driving force,” shares Howard. It’s a force that helps in the broader community. The Vancouver Dragons partner often with the Vancouver Elite Outreach program. For Halloween, they brought pizzas and met with the kids, and on Thanksgiving, they delivered holiday dinners. Not only do they provide company and community to the teens, but they talk about the things they all have in common, and especially basketball. The Vancouver Dragons are a passion project for everyone involved. They are teammates on and off the court, but you can’t have a team without players. That’s something Howard is working on as the general manager. He talks to men who have played during college and are ready to pursue a professional career outside of the United States as well as teens finishing high school who love playing basketball but are unsure what to do next. If they seem interested in being in the Minor League Basketball Association, Howard invites them to come to the games and practice with the team. It helps give the Dragons a chance to practice with new players, but it also gives the new guys a chance to show their stuff. And according to Howard, they are looking for specific attributes. “A big thing that we are looking for is guys that want to come in and play as a team, not worry about individual stuff because in leagues like this really the best way to get noticed, if you’re trying to go play overseas or play higher levels is you got to just play as a team.” As a Vancouver Dragon, Billinger says it’s one thing to play basketball and another to understand basketball. “Master the fundamentals. Sometimes we can get caught up watching the guys who do it at the highest level, and they make it look easy, but you have to start somewhere. To get noticed overseas, your team has to win championships, so the team as a whole has to be good.” Howard also believes that goes far beyond the player’s ability on the court. According to Howard, he is looking for “guys that have good attitudes, and understand the process and want to just come in and work hard and get better every day, not settling, not being arrogant or thinking it’s about them. Everyone helping everyone achieve their goals.” The players on the Vancouver Dragons do not play for glory or fame. They do it to advance their careers, lives and skills. But while playing professionally overseas is a goal
28

for many players, Stancil, as CEO, has another dream for his players. “My ultimate goal, for my program, is to get guys the opportunity to stay home and get paid. So hopefully, one day real soon, we will be able to do that and have guys be able to have their families Richard Howard pulls double duty on the come to the games, Vancouver Dragons basketball team, both playing and managing the team. and they would still be able to get paid or go to school and be home to do it. But if they want to go overseas, they have the opportunities to do that as well.” Stancil says he’s working on something with his women’s program, The Lady Fire, too. Stancil says he hopes to provide the same opportunities to female players as the men. While people like Stancil, Thurston and Howard work in the background, the Vancouver Dragons gather to play basketball. Stancil has made all games accessible for anyone who wants to watch a game as tickets are only $5. They also broadcast their games on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, which has allowed them to reach fans worldwide. The team is active on social media, and they read all messages from fans or anyone interested in sponsoring the team. If playing for the Vancouver Dragons is a dream you would like to chase, Howard encourages anyone to reach out. “We are more than willing to help out,” he says. If you want to become a Vancouver Dragon, just know it will take teamwork, brains, and lots of heart. If you give it all you’ve got, you might see yourself living the dream of being a professional basketball player. Coach Thurston says, “The main reason why we get guys out here is that at the end of the day, sports presents us with opportunities to do things that the rest of life just doesn’t let you do.”

a Farm Fresh

ver 100 blue globe thistle plants line the paths of Thiselle Creek farm in Yacolt. They are all that survived the fires that destroyed MacKenzie and Sean Krumhauer’s first farm in Ventura County, California. With hope and anticipation for the future, the thistle roots were carefully dug up and packed in pots to make the long trip to their new home in the Great Northwest, where the Krumhauers started over, founding Thiselle Creek Farm in July 2018. MacKenzie Krumhauer has always loved the outdoors. A California native, she began working on farms with the World Wide Organization of Organic Farmers (WWOOF), a group that helps place individuals on farms through a work-trade arrangement. Krumhauer received free room and board and some pay for her work on a variety of different farms, from livestock to fruit orchards and even a flower farm. On these farms, she learned all she could about true sustainability by nurturing every aspect of the land and wasting nothing. She came to identify the indigenous flora instinctively and witnessed every system in nature working

in harmony. She also experienced the reality of farm life. The long days were hard, yet enjoyable. “My mental and physical well-being thrived so much more with being outside every day versus other jobs I had where I was inside for eight hours a day,” Krumhauer says about her early experiences in farming. “[WWOOF] helped me really get an idea of the lifestyle I would be looking forward to, showed me the amount of work it takes, gave me endless skills and education and instilled my passion for the agricultural industry.” Determined and confident in her talents, Krumhauer set out to start her own flower farm on a leased plot in Southern California. When she found herself in need of a greenhouse, a friend told her they knew a guy who was handy and could help her. Normally a boat captain sailing yachts around the world, Sean was in town and able to take on the job. Sean and MacKenzie discovered that they worked well together as they designed and built the greenhouse. Their friendship blossomed into love and Sean left the
boat life to accompany MacKenzie on her dream of farm ownership. A few short years into marriage and their own farming experience, the Thomas Fire in December of 2017 broke through their farm, destroying everything. The only surviving plants were the blue globe thistles. However, MacKenzie Krumhauer says the devastation was a blessing in disguise. “[The fire] opened up the opportunity for us to move here, which we feel is our dream property and farm. But, at the time it was very daunting to be looking at something you put so much blood, sweat and tears into that was gone within an instant.” After a lot of looking and some luck, the Krumhauers found their new home in Clark County where they have built a community and contributed to bridging the gap between people and their food.
Homegrown Goodness “There are so many benefits to being outside, getting a little dirty and being a part of your own food web,” says Krumhauer. “It continued on page 32

is important to us to have a space where other families can experience that as well.” She and Sean are now parents to two children who are loving the farm life. Oliver, age 3, drives around on his own mini tractor, helping dad feed the pigs and mom plant and weed the vegetable garden. He’s also their best salesman at the farm stand. Elle is still a baby, but neither have known any life other than eating much of their food (though certainly not all) straight out of the ground. “There are so many positive benefits—ecologically, socioeconomically, and financially—to eating locally and in season,” says Krumhauer. While her
family enjoys the health benefits of fresh produce, a big part of her job is educating others. Sustainability is a current hot topic, and according to the Krumhauers, a farm is the best setting to demonstrate “why pastured and humanely raised meat, seasonal produce, locally foraged honey, etc. is a better option for your family and the environment.” “There is also a lot of talk about rising food prices but at the end of the day, food is cheap,” explains Krumhauer. “It’s because we aren’t the ones paying for it. [I’m] referring mostly to the food from our
grocery stores where the bulk of us shop the majority of the time. The food is cheap because large farms are paying their migrant farmers less than livable wages and are taking advantage of the people that are literally feeding our families.” Larger commercial farms receive federal and state subsidies for specific foods and products, making the price point at the market something that small farms, like Thiselle Creek, have difficulty competing with. “So then it is up to us to educate on the ‘why’ but is also puts the onus on us to do what we can to make it financially accessible to families, because at the end of the day, everyone deserves fresh, seasonal and healthy fruits and vegetables.”
Fun on the Farm That’s why the Krumhauers are working to make Thiselle Creek Farm a gathering place for families to escape the city life for a day or weekend. The farm hosts events and workshops throughout the year. Beginning in April, the first Friday of every month is a family event with games, bubbles and 10% off prices at the farm stand. They hope families will come with a blanket and enjoy lunch on the farm. “In spring we plan on launching a Future Farmers Activity Box which will have fun DIY kits, activities and more for your little future farmer,” shares Krumhauer. The farm stand is open every day of the week and features local products from family farms across Washington and Oregon. Fresh honey, seeds, goat cheese, candles, nuts, jam, sourdough and spices are available year round. Fresh produce is available in season, but the brats and sausages from the Krumhauer’s pigs are what really drive in customers. The guiding philosophy of Thiselle Creek Farm is “the slow way, but continued on page 34 Top left: Sean Krumhauer, previously a boat captain, left his nautical life to become a farmer. the right way.” Most farm animals in the U.S. are fed a diet to help them grow large quickly, but the Krumhauers allow their pigs to grow naturally. Located near Moulton Falls, the farm is one of many in the area. However, Thiselle Creek is likely the only farm that will let you take their goats, Jasper and Walnut, on a picnic, or let you stay the night. For those who want more time on the farm, a Farm Family Membership is more than just a monthly food box. Similar to a CSA (community supported agriculture) subscription, but so much more, a Farm Family Membership at Thiselle Creek Farm includes a large welcome basket, pastured raised pork, a holiday turkey and wreath, a farm to table dinner for two, a personalized homemade leather item as well as a choice of a farm experience. Experience options include two nights in their cozy yurt, a couple’s archery lesson or a guided hike and picnic with the goats. Additionally, in March the farm hosted a Bare Root Tree Sale with a variety of fruit trees and flowering or shade trees. “We love knowing that we’ve helped countless neighbors and families start a little legacy in their yards!” If you need help maintaining the tree as it grows, they also offer tree trimming classes. Other events include fresh pork barbecues in the summer, floral design classes, farm tours, beekeeping classes and more. In the fall, a beautiful patch of heirloom pumpkins will be for sale. They offer “Porch Kits” where you get to pick your own variety of pumpkins to decorate the front of your house for a great deal. With Mother’s Day around the corner, Thiselle Creek will be hosting a pop-up event with a variety of activities and vendors. Bring your mom to the farm to enjoy some folk music, a puppet show and a see the momma sows with their
piglets. Find the perfect gift at the farm stand or pick out a customized flower bouquet, delicious dessert or fill your own charcuterie board. Or, make a ceramic keepsake of your handprint so mom will always remember the day together.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors In addition to providing a place to sell goods, Thiselle Creek Farm helps the surrounding farming and homesteading community by providing space for butchering. There can be months-long wait times at larger animal processors/ butchers, and if you own livestock the wait can be costly. The Krumhauers received a grant from the Washington State Departments of Agriculture (WSDA) to build a mobile butcher unit for poultry which is available every second Saturday of the month. Sign up times are available on their website. “We also offer an option for us to give you a lesson on how to do it [at home]. However, the mobile unit has everything needed to process [birds],” explains MacKenzie Krumhauer. “The pandemic has made it very difficult to get appointments [at other butchers]. . . We are excited to be able to offer a small service to our local homesteading and small farm community to be able to learn a new set of skills or to be able to get their birds in their freezer in a timely manner.”

Farming can sometimes be a lonely job since there are long work days and animals or crops that need constant attention. Knowing your neighbors definitely makes farm life less isolating. Even still, the Krumhauers love the life they are building, “Hands down the best part is we get to be outside, connecting with the land every day. We feel very privileged to be able to raise our kids this way.” The skills they have been teaching their children revolve around the importance of being involved in and growing a community. Every day Oliver and Elle watch their parents helping and teaching others, being kind to animals, problem solving, and most importantly, working hard. “There is also a special kind of reverence and connection to our food and food system when you are involved with every step of the process,” states Krumhauer. “It can be really difficult running a farm, building a business, and raising a family together 24/7 but we really wouldn’t choose anything different.”
