The biggest battle at Canucks training camp will be for top-six right wing
T
he biggest battle at Canucks training camp will be for top-six right wing Canucks training camp is in full swing and the season is right around the corner. It seems wild to think the 2020-21 NHL season is just a week away. The usual rhythms of the start of the season havee been thrown all out of whack. To start things off there’s rospect camp, no Young Stars tournament to get fans no prospect ed about future Canucks stars, and no exhibition games to hyped essly dissect for potential lines and defence pairings. endlessly re are just ten days of training camp and then the puck There ps for the first game of the season. drops Thatt gives the Canucks’ coaching staff and front office little timee to assess their roster and put together the team’s starting startin up, not to mention the 4-6 man taxi squad that will stay lineup, h the team in case they need to call up players if someone with gets injured or has to quarantine with COVID-19. Thatt means they’ll need to make some quick decisions. tunately, most of the lineup is already firmly in place. Fortunately, The top-four on defence is set — Quinn Hughes, Nate midt, Alex Edler, and Tyler Myers — and it’s likely Travis Schmidt, monic, signed for now to a PTO, will anchor the third Hamonic, ing with either Jordie Benn or Olli Juolevi on the left side. pairing The forward group is mostly figured out as well. At centre, it’s Elias Pettersson, Bo Horvat, Adam Gaudette, and Jay gle. On the left wing, they’ve got J.T. Miller, Tanner Beagle. rson, Antoine Roussel, and Tyler Motte. Barring injuries Pearson, ome truly stunning performances in training camp, that’s or some w the Canucks will start the season. how On the right wing... well, that’s a different story. The only sure thing on the right wing is that Brock Boeser will be in the top-six alongside either Pettersson or Horvat. rything else is up in the air. The biggest battle at training Everything p will be who joins Boeser at right wing in the top-six. camp Jake Virtanen has the inside track after 18 goals last season, but his defensive lapses might keep him from playing with Horvat, who matches up against top forwards every game. Will Canucks head coach Travis Green be willing to play

Virtanen on the top line with Pettersson and Miller instead? Aside from Virtanen, the Canucks have a few wild cards that will need to make a big impression to get a shot in the top-six. Offseason signing Jayce Hawryluk had a great run with the Ottawa Senators to end last season, putting up 7 points in 11 games after a trade from the Florida Panthers. The 25-yearold winger plays a high-energy game and has the defensive chops to hold his own in a match-up role with Horvat, but the question is whether he can consistently produce points at the NHL level. Zack MacEwen has slowly been working his way through the Canucks system and got the promotion to the NHL he was looking for last season. He has size and the willingness to use it, but also has some sneaky skill. He played a top-six role in the AHL and had an audition with Horvat last season for a few games and didn’t look out of place. Then there’s prospect Kole Lind, who had a strong second year in the AHL, will be angling for a spot on the Canucks roster, but it’s a big leap to step directly into the top-six. He’s more likely to land on the Canucks’ taxi squad to start the season, available for a quick call-up to get plugged into the lineup in a pinch. That’s four players 25 and under battling for a top-six spot, which is all well and good. If one of those four doesn’t win the job, however, it might fall to the oldest player on the roster by default: Loui Eriksson. As much as Canucks fans might hope Eriksson isn’t even on the roster next season, he was Horvat’s most frequent i h i llast season. It I might i h h i right-winger happen again.

Vancouver police fine restaurant for throwing 100 person party on NYE
V
ancouver police say they shut down a private party at a downtown restaurant that had around 100 people in attendance. At roughly 11 p.m. on New Year's Eve, officers responded to a complaint regarding a restaurant near Granville and Davie streets that was hosting a private, closed-door party, explains a news release. Officers estimated that approximately 100 people were in attendance, and food and alcohol were being served. However, Vancouver bars and restaurants were prohibited from serving alcohol after 8 p.m. on New Year Year's Eve. The owner/organizer was issued a violation ticket for $2,300 and the party was shut down by police. Extra officers were deployed in the entertainment district on
New Year's Eve, and they responded to 34 calls related to the ‘Gathering and Events’ order from the Provincial Health Officer. Four tickets of $2,300 each were issued to event organizers. A few dozen anti-mask demonstrators gathered outside the Vancouver Art Gallery to protest the government-imposed restrictions related to COVID-19 that night as well. At 11:30 p.m. the VPD says officers responded to the area for a protestor who was climbing on top of one of the statues on site. While police were escorting the individual off the property, she allegedly bit one of the officers. The woman was charged with assaulting a police officer. By Elana Shepert

Transforming the funeral industry with affordability and transparency A h Amherst FFunerall and d cremation i S Services i iis driven by the principle that the best service can also be simple and affordable. Founded by Scott McFarlane, Amherst is a proudly Canadian, locally owned and operated, independent business. Free of ties to large, funeral chains and other funeral homes and chapels, McFarlane was able to base the company on what he truly believed the industry was missing. In 2008, Amherst was established with the firm belief that all families should have the right to quality and affordable funeral services, without having to sacrifice the
dignity both dying di i or respect off b h the h d i and the living. Nearly 10 years later, Amherst still operates on the creed that funeral arrangements should be simple, to the point, and free of sales pitches. “We don’t pressure families,” McFarlane, the owner, funeral director and embalmer of Amherst, said. “When death is imminent, our mission is to allow the families to focus on spending precious time with their loved ones, not to rush them to the funeral home to sign arrangement paperwork and distract them with complicated decisions about costs.”

Uplifting virtual choir performance might
be exactly what you need right now
A
ward-winning local choir, Westcoast Harmony Chorus, has released a digital version of the song "Go the Distance", meant to uplift people who are feeling beat down after months of
dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. The song is dedicated to frontline workers, those who are feeling lost or alone, and people "who miss family, friends, and regular routines" and need "a loving hand to help lift them up" during the next leg of the journey. The choir itself has been affected by the pandemic, of course. Their Master Director, Anne Downton, tells us that they shifted to online rehearsals back in March of 2020, and have been "meeting" online every Wednesday since then. Downton says "The biggest adjustment has been not being able to hear ourselves sing all together. We’ve found new ways to work together, but projects like this remind us of the joy that comes from singing together." Over 50 of their members
participated in their online performance, posted to YouTube. They rehearsed for three hours per week, over many weeks, to get everything just right. Each member recorded themselves and submitted their audio, which was mixed in Logic Pro. They then recorded video of themselves singing on their iPhones, and submitted that along with photos and videos they captured of themselves and their various individual accomplishments they've had during the pandemic. The result, created using Adobe Pro software, is an uplifting song, with great visuals. It’s just what you might need at this point in the journey. Enjoy it at www.bit.ly/vanchoir. By Bob Kronbauer

Half a million blankets have been donated to a B.C. charity
O
n October 5, 2005, Gregory Ould spoke with a homeless man outside of a theatre in Chinatown. That conversation sparked the creation of an organization that would go on to help thousands. “I could use a blanket… to survive the night.” the man said to Ould. Ould immediately went and bought the warmest blanket he could find and gave it to him. The reaction the man gave inspired Ould to tell his then one-year-old son Ben about the experience. "Wouldn't it be cool if you and I went out like Batman and Robin – that caught his attention – and instead of fighting crime we're fighting the cold and we're fighting loneliness," Ould recounted in an interview with Vancouver Is Awesome. Fifteen years later Ben is the co-founder of Blanket BC and alongside his father they are celebrating their organization's largest milestone to date, and its 15 year anniversary. Over those 15 years, the organization has donated hundreds of thousands of blankets to those coldest on the streets of Vancouver.
This success was in part thanks to a recent partnership with U-Lock mini storage which served as a drop-off point for people donating blankets to the organization.
organization did not escape COVID-19 completely. Blanket BC had to cease operations for eight months, turning the thumbscrews on the organization’s cheque book. In response, Blanket BC created a fundraiser to recoup some of those losses. The fundraiser’s goal of $15,000 has nearly been met with $13,000 being donated at the time of this writing. "Being able to hit this number means a lot to us because it means that we were successful in reaching a mass amount of people and helping out tens of thousands of people over the years," Ould said. "It feels good because it has been a personal challenge. This just means that what we're doing means a lot to the community at large." To the people who have supported Blanket BC monetarily or with blankets, Ould has this to say: "Bless you all. Thank you. In some way, Blanket BC is a vessel of hope and of love by providing people's warmth. It's not Blanket BC per se, it's the people, we're representing the people."

The campaign is held the third week of November and has been for the past 11 years. This year the drive went ahead virtually, with volunteers driving to houses only to pick up freshly washed blankets waiting on doorsteps in plastic bags.
Despite the hardship 2020 has brought for so many, it has been Blanket BC’s most successful year in terms of blanket donations with an estimated 15,000 blankets straining the organization’s storage capacities. "All of our lockers are completely filled, we can't give away more blankets than we're getting, it's ridiculously awesome," Ould said, his voice cracking with emotion.

The bathing pavilion that separates the sands from Beach Avenue was designed by E.E. Blackmore in 1907 and completed in 1909. In 1939 it was converted into Vancouver’s public aquarium, its original function having been usurped by English Bay’s current bathing house which was built in 1931. The buildings that appear directly behind the bathing pavilion sit on the land now known as Morton Park. In this image, an auto clearing house and garage are shown occupying that space.
Publishers, Editors, Sales, Reporters, Cartoonist, Layout, and Delivery persons. I just want to thank you all for your dedication in a year so full of uncertainty, disappointments, and fear. Something to look forward to every Wednesday, delivered without failure. It might not seem big, but it is. A faithful reader, Jo-Anne

Writing an effective classified ad is easy when you use these time-tested principles. • Use a keyword. Start your ad with the item for sale, service offered or the job title. • Be descriptive. Give customers a reason to respond. Advertisers have found that the more information you provide, the better the response. • Limit abbreviations. Use only standard abbreviations to avoid confusion and misinterpretations. • Include price. Always include price of the item for sale. • How to respond. Always include a phone number (with area code) and/or street andd emaiil adddress.
HOME SERVICES ADVERTISING POLICIES
All advertising published in this newspaper is accepted on the premise that the merchandise and services offered are accurately described and willingly sold to buyers at the advertised prices. Advertisers are aware of these conditions. Advertising that does not conform to these standards or that is deceptive or misleading, is never knowingly accepted. If any reader encounters non-compliance with these standards we ask that you inform the Publisher of this newspaper and The Advertising Standards Council of B.C. OMISSION AND ERROR: The publishers do not guarantee the insertion of a particular advertisement on a specified date, or at all, although every effort will be made to meet the wishes of the advertisers. Further, the publishers do not accept liability for any loss of damage caused by an error or inaccuracy in the printing of an advertisement beyond the amount paid for the space actually occupied by the portion of the advertisement in which the error occurred. Any corrections of changes will be made in the next available issue. Vancouver Is Awesome will be responsible for only one incorrect insertion with liability limited to that portion of the advertisement affected by the error. Request for adjustments or corrections on charges must be made within 30 days of the ad’s expiration. For best results please check your ad for accuracy the first day it appears. Refunds made only after 7 business days notice!
TRUTH IN EMPLOYMENT ADVERTISING Glacier Media Group makes every effort to ensure you are responding to a reputable and legitimate job opportunity. If you suspect that an ad to which you have responded is misleading, here are some hints to remember. Legitimate employers do not ask for money as part of the application process; do not send money; do not give any credit card information; or call a 900 number in order to respond to an employment ad. Job opportunity ads are salary based and do not require an investment.
