More than 16 outdoor love-themed art pieces launching in February
A
giant's handful of giant 'candy' hearts, a community chalkboard and a whole bunch of pink polka-dot umbrellas are just a few of the ways local business organizations are encouraging Vancouverites to explore our neighbourhoods this February. While different business improvement associations (BIAs) usually do something for Valentine's Day, this year 16 are joining forces for the 'Love Your City' campaign. Annette O’Shea, the executive director at Yaletown BIA, explains BIAs from the downtown as well as other parts of the city, like West 4th in Kitsilano, Mt Pleasant and the Hasting-Sunrise's 'East Village' will be participating. "We are all doing love themed art installations," she explains. "They’ll all be outdoors." In Yaletown, it'll be in Bill Curtis Square where the colourful umbrella installation is being changed up with pink polka dots on the umbrellas and giant neon pink balls emblazoned with 'LOVE.' "It should be really brilliantly coloured and make people feel happy," O'Shea says. In the West 4th neighbourhood, Jane McFadden (executive director at

"In other neighbourhoods there are murals, there’s a bunch of different things, not all of us are doing the same thing," she explains. In the West End, McFadden adds, they're 'heart bombing' Jim Deva Square. "They’re set up so you can take a selfie and have some fun with it," says O'Shea
of all the installations. 'Love Your City' isn't just the addition of the month-long art pieces; there's also a contest and charitable component. People who visit the neighbourhoods and art can enter the contests by adding a couple hashtags to their photos: #LoveYourCity and #FindLove[Neighbourhood] (neighbourhood is replaced by whichever neighbourhood you're in, like #FindLoveGastown or #FindLoveWestEnd). Local contests will be drawn for on a regular basis while a grand prize worth over $5,000 will be drawn for at the end of the month. Each BIA is also donating to a charity. Some are working with local not-forprofits in their area, like a food bank, while others are donating to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (February is heart month in Canada). In Yaletown, dogs will also be part of the fun; O'Shea says her staff will be handing out special Valentine's tags (and some with COVID-19 references) during the month to anyone they see taking a pic with their dog. "We’re also going to make some heartshaped bandanas for dogs," she adds.

Brock Boeser’s back at his best because he knows his body better
BOB KRONBAUER
to seem like a distant memory A few weeks into the 2020-21 season, that Brock Boeser appears to be back. A fter a two-goal performance on Saturday, Boeser jumped into the NHL lead in goalscoring, though Connor McDavid matched him the following night. At the time, Boeser was on-pace to score 40+ goals, even in a pandemicshortened 56-game season. He’ll slow down, of course — he has to. After Saturday’s game, Boeser’s shooting percentage was an absurdly-high 26.7%. Even the best shooters in the NHL don’t generally shoot over 20% over the course of a full season and Boeser’s career-high from his rookie season was 16.2%. Still, the puck is rocketing off his stick in a way it didn’t last year and Boeser had to admit that his shot had suffered in recent seasons. “I would say not necessarily has [my shot] been there, especially after my back injury, because that gave me a lot of problems after.
L
ast season, Brock Boeser scored just 16 goals. It’s not that he had a bad season exactly — he was still a firstline forward on one of the best lines in tthe NHL — but it was a far cry from the bu uzz he created as a rookie. Th hat Brock Boeser looked like he could sco ore 40+ goals in a season. That Brock Bo oeser looked like a future threat to win thee Rocket Richard as the NHL’s leading go oalscorer. That Brock Boeser was starting
It was a pretty bad injury,” said Boeser. “Knowing my body now and knowing what I need to feel good, I’m feeling confident and I feel like my shot’s back where it was my first year.” Boeser’s shot returning to its rookie form is bad news for the goaltenders of the all-Canadian North Division. But what’s intriguing is that Boeser has spoken multiple times about his confidence stemming from knowing his body. Dealing with multiple injuries in his first three seasons in the NHL, including a serious back injury in his rookie year, has forced Boeser to be more mindful of his body. “Even last year, I think I was still learning stuff about my body from past injuries and different exercises I need to do to prep,” said Boeser after Saturday’s game. “I’m feeling really good right now. I feel like I know what I need to do before each and every practice and game to stay on top of my body and I feel like it’s showing on the ice.” That’s a great lesson for Boeser to learn so early in his career. Young athletes can sometimes feel invulnerable, able to bounce back from minor injuries or take shortcuts on nutrition or training, but the key to longevity in the NHL is knowing what your body needs daily to succeed on the ice.
Consider Jaromir Jagr, who is still plaaying professional hockey in the Czech Republic at 48. His workout routines became om legendary, but much of it stemmed fro knowing his body. Towards the end of o his NHL career, for instance, he kept a softball on the bench to rub over musccles to keep them loose between shifts. Hee was notorious for training at odd hours latte at night, because he wanted to train wheen he knew his body was ready. “I want to do it on my own, not becausse someone tells me, ‘Oh, let’s practice att 9 o’clock in the morning.’ What if I don’tt feel right at 9 o’clock in the morning?” said d Jagr. “I do what I need to do when I need to o do it.” For Boeser, focussing on his body beffore games and preparing appropriately haas allowed him to forget all about his bod dy during the game and just play. It’s not on. something he was able to do last seaso “Last year, I’ve said it a lot, it was a leaarning experience,” said Boeser. “I think I waas in my head the most I’ve ever been in myy head in my hockey career. This year is a fressh start and I just felt like I need to get baack to my game — not overthinking things, just j playing off instinct.” By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

or several years years, the Chowder Chowdown has been one of Vancouver's favourite food events. However, for 2021, the event has shifted its scope and is instead taking place for the first time ever as a month-long celebration coast to coast. Hosted by the non-profit Ocean Wise Seafood program, the annual gathering - which finds ticketed guests sipping samples of chowders created by top Vancouver chefs with the aim of finding the chowder champion - is always a big draw for attendees, as well as a major source of funds for the organization. The COVID pandemic meant Ocean Wise Seafood needed to re-think their annual fundraising events in Vancouver and Toronto which previously brought in more than $70,000 annually for the not-for-profit program, explains Ocean Wise. This year, for the entire month of February, chowder fans can order up chowders from several Metro Vancouver restaurants and vendors for a variety of experiences to be enjoyed either at home or while dining in. Partial proceeds of each chowder sold during the National Chowder Chowdown Festival will be donated to the not-for-profit Ocean Wise Seafood program. The Vancouver-area offerings include a range of global influences and kinds of chowder experiences. For example, you can order up a Manila clam and sweet corn chowder from Fanny Bay Oyster Bar in Vancouver, or spice things up with a trip south of the border in Richmond with Little Mexico Cantina's Sopa
De Donadores Donadores. Visit Hart House in Burnaby to check out their Smoked Tomato Seafood Chowder, or head into your home kitchen with a DIY Pacific Chowder Kit from Intercity Packers. Don't feel like cooking? Organic Ocean has teamed up with Ocean Mama to create a Sensual Smoked Sablefish Chowder you can order for home delivery to heat up when the craving strikes.
Here's who is taking part in the National Chowder Chowdown Festival in Metro Vancouver: • 1931 Gallery Bistro - Vancouver • Big Feast Bistro - Maple Ridge • Edge Catering - Vancouver • Fanny Bay Oyster Bar - Vancouver • Intercity Packers - Vancouver • Hart House Restaurant - Burnaby • Holts Café Vancouver - Vancouver • Little Mexico Cantina - Richmond • Organic Ocean - Vancouver • Pajo’s Fish and Chips - Richmond and Port Moody • Showcase Restaurant at the Vancouver Marriott Downtown - Vancouver • ShuckShuck - Vancouver, BC • Stanley Park Brewing Restaurant and Brewpub - Vancouver • The Vancouver Fish Co. - Vancouver By Lindsay William-Ross
Transforming the funeral industry with affordability and transparency A h Amherst FFunerall and d cremation i S Services i iis driven by the principle that the best service can also be simple and affordable. Founded by Scott McFarlane, Amherst is a proudly Canadian, locally owned and operated, independent business. Free of ties to large, funeral chains and other funeral homes and chapels, McFarlane was able to base the company on what he truly believed the industry was missing. In 2008, Amherst was established with the firm belief that all families should have the right to quality and affordable funeral services, without having to sacrifice the
dignity both dying di i or respect off b h the h d i and the living. Nearly 10 years later, Amherst still operates on the creed that funeral arrangements should be simple, to the point, and free of sales pitches. “We don’t pressure families,” McFarlane, the owner, funeral director and embalmer of Amherst, said. “When death is imminent, our mission is to allow the families to focus on spending precious time with their loved ones, not to rush them to the funeral home to sign arrangement paperwork and distract them with complicated decisions about costs.”

VA N C O U V E R ’ S FA M O U S ‘HOBBIT HOUSE’ UP FOR RENT
O
ne of the oldest, most unique and well-storied Vancouver homes entered the rental market last week, and it can be yours for $6,200
a month. The nearly 80-year-old storybook-style home is officially named the James Residence, but over the years it has received the affectionate moniker of the Hobbit House. Situated at 587 West King Edward Ave, the home was built by Brenton Lea in 1942 for William H. James, a CNR foreman, and his family. It’s a bit of a miracle the home is standing at all after escaping a development deal in 2016. After being saved, the home’s “single cedar thatch” or “steam-bent roof” was restored in 2017, which resulted in the home receiving the City of Vancouver Heritage Award of Honour. Also in 2017 the home was listed for sale to the tune of $2,698,000. The home will be available to rent in all its
unfurnished glory starting February 20. Despite it’s perceived littleness, the home boasts a 2,906-square-foot footprint which contains three bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, 12-foot vaulted ceilings, three fireplaces, a media room, and a backyard patio with beautiful landscaping. For a home built the same year Frank Sinatra recorded his first solo sessions, the interior of the house is shockingly modern. A virtual tour of the property shows white marble countertops in the kitchen, glass and steel railings going downstairs, and it’s two gas fireplaces embedded into the eggshell white walls. If you’re interested in renting this piece of history you can contact Baxter through the home’s Craigslist ad. By Cameron Thomson with files from Lindsay William-Ross and Bob Kronbauer

hen walking down a commercial district in Vancouver it’s easy to miss some of the houses attached to storefronts or, more correctly put, miss the houses with storefronts attached. This 1928 photograph of the 1000 block of Denman Street shows several storefronts attached to already existing dwellings. Reviewing the building permit records available at the City of Vancouver Archives indicates that the two large houses near the centre of the photograph were first built in 1902. Their storefronts were added in the 1910s. Sometimes the proprietors of the stores lived in the adjoining house, as was the case with William Sterling, confectioner. Other times, they lived elsewhere, such as the case with
Chem Bing and Harry Betterton, proprietors of the shops on the right side of the photo - South Vancouver Produce Co. and the English Bay Meat Market, respectively. The two large houses in this photograph can still be found on Denman Street. However, the storefronts have since been greatly altered and the houses are much harder to see from the street than they were in 1928. This type of house-storefront building can be found in other parts of Vancouver, although their numbers are declining as older commercial buildings are redeveloped into multi-storey condominiums with ground-floor retail spaces. By Bronwyn Smyth - City of Vancouver Archives

The BC Lions really, really need your help with graphic design
T
he BC Lions put out a job listing that is getting some laughs online. Posted to their Twitter and Facebook accounts on Thursday, Jan. 28 was a crude rendition of their classic logo, with the words "We need a graphic Designer" scrawled above it. Those posts contained a link to their job listing for a full-time position of an Intermediate Graphic Designer, which they're hiring for ASAP. Carolyn Cody works as the team's Director of Business Operations & Marketing, and in an email tells Vancouver Is Awesome that she was the one who designed the silly graphic that has now been shared more than 100 times on Facebook. She used a web-based program called JS Paint—an identical version of MS Paint, but online—to create it. It took her "about five minutes to make two versions," one of which you'll see here. The team discussed the merits of both, then went with the "more polished" version. According to Matt Baker, the team's Manager of Communications & Content, the idea was to "have some fun with it and attract more engagement," and of course, applicants for the position, which is a real job. Baker explains "It’s easy to lose sight of this during these crazy times we’re in, but at the end of the day Social Media is a place for fun." Cody notes that "Working in sports may seem glamorous but it’s hard, grinding work and you need to have a sense of humour to survive," and goes on to say "We’re a small team so we are looking for the right fit who would also find a graphic like the one we posted funny." Love of sports and, specifically the BC Lions Football team is a tremendous asset as well. By Bob Kronbauer

Coronavirus vaccinations given to DTES residents
C
OVID-19 vaccinations were distributed to residents of the Downtown Eastside last Friday at four separate clinics. The clinics, organized by Vancouver Coastal Health, were set up at Carnegie Centre, Pender Community Health Centre, Downtown Community Health Clinic, and the Union Gospel Mission. Vaccines were given to residents over 18 years of age who are experiencing homelessness or are living in shelters, SROs, and supportive housing. In Friday's briefing, Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said "We have transmission in some of our shelters, both in Fraser and the Surrey area, and Vancouver, and the Downtown Eastside. We know that people in those situations are much more likely to get severe illness, end up in hospital. So we are doing some targeted immunization in those communities." The Union Gospel Mission's Jeremy Hunka, who welcomed the initiative, says the DTES community is particularly vulnerable to the coronavirus. The UGM estimates there are over 3,600 homeless people in the city of Vancouver, but that number is expected to rise due to the pandemic.
The different installations will last all month, so people can visit them on their own schedule, O'Shea adds. The city's BIAs have been meeting online more regularly since the pandemic started in an effort to keep their neighbourhoods active. McFadden notes they've had a mix of success stories and losses. The West 4th neighbourhood has a bunch of outdoor gear shops that have been doing well as people seek new outdoor activities, but others, like a local dressmaker, haven't been able to keep the doors open. "We’ve lost nine businesses during Covid, that have closed," she says. The hope is 'Love Your City' will get people to move around the city in a safe manner. "We’ve created this 'Love Your City' campaign so you can go around your city safely," O'Shea says. YALETOWN BIA

OPINION:
Here's how those millionaires managed to skip the vaccination line

ast week, Great Canadian Gaming CEO Rod Baker stepped down after he and his wife Ekaterina Baker allegedly skipped the line to get the first dose of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccination. The couple raked in millions of dollars last year and live at the luxury Shangri-La in the heart of downtown Vancouver. They allegedly traveled to Beaver Creek, Yukon in a private jet, posed as local hotel workers in order to get vaccinated, then hightailed it back to the airport, and their lives in Vancouver. In the exercise below, I've attempted to reconstruct the circumstances that may have led up to their landing in Beaver Creek, a community which—according to the 2016 census— is mostly made up of Indigenous citizens. None of this happened. It's completely made up. But it's the way I like to picture it going down. ***** Rod is laying on a red velvet chaise in the study of his home on the 57th floor of a Georgia St high-rise, blankly staring through a floor-to-ceiling window at the North Shore and the mountains beyond. He holds a medium-sized silver bell by its wooden handle. Hundreds of tiny, encrusted diamonds spell out the initials "RB" on the side of it. The bell was a gift from his wife Ekaterina on their 1st wedding anniversary. She bought it at Tiffany & Co during their most recent trip to Dubai, seeing to it that the help hid it away from him until the big day arrived. Dangling the mechanism gently between his thumb and index finger, Rod's sullen gaze shifts from the snowy
peaks to his own, bored reflection staring back at him, partly obscured by the diamond initials. His mood flips suddenly to rage, and in a singular motion he rings the bell while hurling it toward the window, which it crashes into, then lays silenced on the floor as he yells "F**k this!" An elderly man dressed in a black suit with a bow tie, wearing an apron, rushes into the room. It's Rod's uncle Gene, one of the minimum-wage employees that keeps the place in order. "Sir! I'm so sorry I didn't hear you ring," exclaims Gene, wringing his hands, "Is everything okay?" Still worked up, Rod vomits a little bit onto the Ziegler Mahal rug in front of the chaise. "Clean that s**t up," he blurts, not looking up, then leaves the room. Ekaterina is out on the deck. Similarly withdrawn, she's scrolling the camera roll on her phone, looking back at the photos from their recent trip to Hong Kong. They're on day three of mandatory quarantine, and the couple is going stir crazy. Rod approaches her and asks, "Honey, what are we even doing here?" "We're quarantining, silly," she responds matter-of-factly. "No, I mean what are we doing here? We should be out enjoying our lives. We deserve..." His gag reflex kicks in again. It happens when he's upset. This time he manages to keep the contents of his stomach where they belong. "I just... we should be able to travel and do fun stuff, like we used to do. We've earned that right." "But honey, we just got back from a trip, and you've got that fun court

thingy coming up! With the Cohen Commissioner or whatever that was?" "No, Eky. I'm tired of that everyday stuff," he declares, "I want to live!" At this moment, Rod glances across the street to the Trump Tower, where he sees some hotel workers having a smoke out on the patio of what he knows to be the floor where the staff room is; he owns a unit over there and, once, after hosting a Liberal Party of Canada fundraiser in his suite, made the horrifying mistake of getting off the elevator at that floor. Suddenly possessed by a brilliant idea, his mouth falls agape as he turns his head slowly from Trump Tower back toward his wife. Rod's eyes then light up, his face abruptly shining like the diamonds on his bell. "Eky, pack a small bag for the day and meet me up at the helipad in twenty minutes." "We don't have a helipad here, dear. You're mistaking this place for the Shangri-La in Doha again." "Dammit, they all look the same. Well, meet me at the car in twenty, Gene's driving us out to the jet." He throws on a jacket and a scarf, and makes his way to the elevator, then down to the lobby. Once there, Rod engages the hotel staff. It's not something he enjoys doing, but it's a means to an end. His stomach rumbles and he nearly gags as he tells the concierge he'll pay him $500 for his street clothes, and an extra $500 if he finds a female staff member to give up hers. The rest is, allegedly, history. By Bob Kronbauer

learn just how deeply connected our everyday lives are to the Arctic through this feature exhibition that will leave you awestruck and inspired,” explains a release from Science World. The exhibit will allow visitors to explore the impact of the changing climate in the far North through many lenses, including the land, sea, and ice. They will connect with the remarkable animals that live in the Arctic, the resilient people that inhabit this region, and the dedicated scientists who are helping to reveal what makes this place so unique. “The Arctic may seem like an unfamiliar and distant place but it’s important to realize the impact our actions have on lands near and far,” said Tracy Redies, President & CEO of Science World.

17,000 in fines. 77 people fined. One arrest. Not the normal stats for a house party, but the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) were busy Sunday morning, state police in a press release. Their investigation began after being called to a makeshift nightclub last weekend. Two more parties were held this past weekend, according to the release, and police showed up as well,
uninvited, but with a search warrant. Inside the 1,100 ft. residence they found what appeared to be "a nightclub and show lounge," described by VPD Deputy Chief Howard Chow on Twitter as an “illegal booze-can.” "Our officers found 78 people inside the three-level apartment, and none of them were wearing masks,” says VPD Sgt. Steve Addison in the release. “There were menus, tables, point-of-sale terminals, and cash tills.”
Each of the 77 guests received a $230 fine for attending. The host, 42-year-old Mohammad Movassaghi, was taken to jail. "Let this be a lesson to anyone who thinks the rules don’t apply to them,” says Addison. “If you are caught hosting or attending a party during the pandemic, and continue to break the rules, you could face stiff fines or wind up in jail.” Police first showed up to the penthouse/makeshift nightclub/illegal booze-can last weekend after receiving a tip from a woman who was invited. A man working the door was fined $2,500 at the Jan. 25 event. The host refused to let police enter at the time. By Brendan Kergin with files from Bob Kronbauer
Champion power lifter works to bolster strength of frontline workers
I
nstead of bench pressing the weight of your average fully-grown black bear, Sumeet Sharma has been lifting the spirits of frontline workers. Sharma, a competitive powerlifter with several gold and silver medal finishes earned over his career, was set to compete in the European Junior Powerlifting Championships last May until the coronavirus (COVID-19) dashed those plans. As the pandemic spread and put increasing pressure on frontline workers, Sharma would switch out lifting disks of iron for crates of water bottles and boxes full of food to donate to nurses across the Lower Mainland. “I have a lot of family members and friends who work in hospitals, just hearing their stories about how healthcare workers working extremely hard during this pandemic really inspired me, my family, and my sponsors to give back to the healthcare workers,” Sharma wrote in an email to Vancouver Is Awesome. Since April Sharma, along with his sponsors, friends and family have delivered Indian food, pizza, coffee, nutrition bars, and water bottles to hospitals. The initiative switched from hospitals to schools in early September but not before donating to Vancouver General, Royal Columbian, Abbotsford
Regional, Langley Memorial, St. Paul's and Mount Saint Joseph. “The reason why we are delivering to teachers is because they have been working extremely hard during the pandemic dealing with cases and new protocols each month,” Sharma said. “As a team we wanted to thank them for their hard work and let them know that we really appreciate what they are doing for the kids.” Sharma has been competing in powerlifting since 2016 and in that time he has accumulated an impressive resume. He won gold in 2017 and 2018 at the Western Powerlifting Championships and placed fourth in powerlifting in the country in 2018. Sharma also won gold for Team Canada in powerlifting at the North American Powerlifting Championships in Panama City last October and more recently competed in Winnipeg at Nationals where he earned another gold medal. Since winning the national title he has been selected to be part of team Canada to compete at the World powerlifting championship in Russia in October. Despite Sharma’s obvious

prowess in the sport, powerlifting is still a hobby. In his day job he works with the B.C. Corrections’ emergency response team. Members of this team also help Sharma in his flurry of donations. Needless to say, Sharma is a busy man. When he’s not pumping iron, donating to hospitals or schools, since the beginning of the year he has been training Lower Mainland youth in the sport of powerlifting for free and speaks at schools giving presentations on the sport and dieting. Sharma says he wants others to follow in donating to B.C.’s tireless frontline workers, telling Vancouver Is Awesome that “I'm hoping my story encourages people in the community to donate to front line workers and teachers.” A full list of charities that support frontline workers across the province can be found on canadahelps.org.
