ver the past year, we’ve witnessed a lot of change globally, regionally, and also here within our organization. When we launched Vancouver Is Awesome online in 2008, it didn’t cross our minds that we might one day publish a print newspaper to accompany our online media outlet. Yet here we are 52 weeks into this and still going strong. In fact, our print publication is growing with help from advertisers as well as readers like you who ‘subscribe’ to this free paper by way of our voluntary pay model starting at $5/ month (visit www.bit.ly/helpvia2021 for more info on that). Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, since the beginning of 2020 we’ve doubled our editorial staff, enabling us to deliver you more Vancouver news and lifestyle stories than ever before. With more output comes more input, and one thing I can say about print newspaper readers is that you folks are a breath of fresh air. As we’ve ‘grown up’ on the internet, we’re mostly accustomed to receiving quick, snarky comments from people hiding behind their keyboards. I speak for the entire newsroom when I say that receiving communication from you print readers is a hundred times more enjoyable than wading through the muck of social media comments. I personally delight in receiving well-thought-out emails from you, along with the odd letter in my actual mailbox at the office. Some of you leave phone messages too, which I find joy in listening to. From critiques to praise to story ideas, or simply reaching out to say hello and that you appreciate what we’re doing, you’ve given us hope that there is still intelligent life out there. Thanks for reading, and writing. Here’s to another year in print!

Can nucks have more no-movement and no-trade clauses than any other NHL team

C

anucks fans know at least one of the team’s pending unrestricted free agents won’t be traded this season: Travis Hamonic. Heading into the trade deadline, the Canucks should d be sellers. Trade conversations usually start with playerss who will be unrestricted free agents (UFAs) at the end off the season, so teams don’t just lose them for nothing in free agency. For thee Canucks, the list of pending UFAs includes Tanner Pearso on, Brandon Sutter, Alex Edler, and Jordie Benn. It also includes Hamonic, but a report from Sportsnet’s Elliottte Friedman on Hockey Night Canada made it clear that hee won’t be traded because he has a no-movement clause in his contract and won’t be waiving it. A no-m movement clause (NMC) is exactly what it sounds like: th he player can’t be moved, whether to the minors or traded d to another team, unless the player approves. There is also the no-trade clause (NTC), which is similar: the player can’t be traded but could be put on waivers and sent to the minors. NTCs are sometimes modified, meaning a playeer can provide a list of teams to which they can or cannott be traded. It’s a litttle unusual for a player on a one-year contract like Hamonic to receive a NMC, but he and his agent negotiiated it into his contract for a very good reason. He wants to stay in western Canada for family reasons — he requessted a trade from the New York Islanders and opted out of the 2020 NHL playoffs for the same reason — so took leess than a top-four defenceman would typically take in ordeer to get that clause. It’s the human side of hockey that sometiimes gets forgotten. Hamo onic’s NMC is eminently forgivable and its addition is

what kept his cap hit low enough to fit him on the Canucks roster. Other NMC and NTCs on the Canucks’ books, viewable via CapFriendly.com, make a little less sense. 11 players on the Canucks, including five of their six defencemen currently in the lineup, have some form of trade protection. Looking at the rest of the all-Canadian North Division this season, the Canucks definitely stand out. The Calgary Flames, Winnipeg Jets, and Montreal Canadiens have six. The Edmonton Oilers have three. The Ottawa Senators have just two. The Toronto Maple Leafs are closest to the Canucks with ten, but they’re at the top of the division and expected to contend for the Stanley Cup. In fact, no other team in the entire NHL has as many as 11 no-trade and no-movement clauses. The Canucks have the most. It’s who owns those clauses as well that is baffling. Most teams give trade protection to a few of their best players. Benning has handed out NTCs to the likes of bottom-six forwards Brandon Sutter, Jay Beagle, and Antoine Roussel and depth defenceman Jordie Benn. The clauses aren’t overly onerous — Braden Holtby’s modified NTC allows him to specify just four teams to which he can’t be traded — but their very existence is puzzling. Fourth-line centres like Beagle rarely get trade protection and it did little to lower Beagle’s cap hit on his four-year, $12 million deal. As another example, Micheal Ferland didn’t just get a four-year contract from the Canucks (something no other team was willing to do given his history of concussions), he also got a full NMC for the first two years, then a modified NTC for the next two. The best of the clauses — best in the sense of humour, not

Canucks

actual quality — belongs to Loui Eriksson. His six-year, $36-million contract has a full NMC in the first two years, becomes a NTC in years three and four, then becomes a modified NTC for the final two years. We’re currently in the first of those two years, where Eriksson can submit a list of 15 teams to which he cannot be traded. Of course, the idea that his contract only allows him to be traded now — when he’s a consistent healthy scratch — is amazing. In reality, his boat anchor of a contract is the most effective no-movement clause in the world. Hopefully, the Canucks’ other clauses won’t prevent the team from making trades before the deadline to improve the team for the future. By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

t's harrd to argue that one of the best featurres of our city is the number of publicc gardens and other green spaces, but a consensus on which are the best ones is allways tough to decide. Is it the pocket park on your block, that great fielld adjacent to the local community centre, or the huge parks that can hold thousand ds of people, socially distanced? Most of you voted huge, with VanDusen taking th he cake. While the Festival of Lights was canceled, that didn't stop you from enjo oying the standard (wonderful!) fare on off ffer here. The Irish Heather is moving out of Gastown

New local company offers $99 day adventure trailer rentals

L

ast year Nic Tickner and Ryan Aitcheson decided to turn their passion for the outdoors into a business, helping others enjoy B.C.'s backyard as much as they do. They launched Northirn Overland in 2021 with a variety of rental 4WD vehicles with rooftop tents, as well as a Taxa Tiger Moth adventure trailer. Their intention is to make it much more than a rental company and more of an experience company. We took their trailer out for a weekend adventure off the grid, and the company’s pre-planning included a call from Nic asking us what area we wanted to head to. If you have zero camping equipment, the trailer comes equipped with everything you need, and then some. Chairs, stuff to light a fire with, all the basics. One of the best features is the pull-out kitchen unit that comes out the back, under the canopy. As Nic tells us, "You don't need to spend tens of thousands of dollars to get out there with this stuff," and the price tag of $99/ day for the trailer is proof positive of that. Have a look at their website at northirn.com to check out what they offer.

Full disclosure: Northirn founders Nic and Ryan work with V.I.A., and they loaned us the trailer for the trip free of charge so we could review their service. They're good people who help us put together the annual Awesome Grand Prix, B.C.'s Criterium Championships. In other words, we're vouching for these guys. By Bob Kronbauer

took to YouTube back in April 2020 to share a video of himself singing a COVID-19 parody of Gloria Gaynor's might "I Will Survive." Heather has been in business in Vancouver since 1997 and has been determined not to let the COVID-19 pandemic and its surrounding economic fallout take him, his businesses, and his staff out of the game. "We are fighting for the life of our business right now, and all depending on its survival; our staff, our leases, our

community, our reputation, our family, our suppliers, etc.," explained Heather via the Irish Heather website last spring. To address the businesses' financial struggles, Heather introduced an "employee pricing" program in order to encourage customers to order from his restaurants when possible. In addition to the Irish Heather, Heather operates the Shebeen Whisk(e)y House (located at the rear of the Irish Heather) as

F

or nearly a quartercentury, The Irish Heather has been welcoming patrons for drinks and eats in a convivial atmosphere on Carrall Street in Gastown. But those days are coming to an end, as owner Sean Heather announced this week the veteran spot is packing up and moving to a new location elsewhere in Vancouver. "After 24 amazing years in Gastown, we have decided to move to a new neighbourhood," reads a social media post from the Irish Heather. "Thank you to all of our loyal customers, & amazing neighbours. We look forward to welcoming you all once we get settled in our new location." Details about the Irish Heather's new location have been kept under wraps, however, a plan is in motion, according to a follow-up post from the gastropub. "We are moving so that we have a better chance to survive and rebuild when COVID is done with us," Heather said in an e-mail to V.I.A. "By moving to another location, we can reduce our overheads, including rent, insurance, property taxes, etc.," explained the chef and restaurateur. Heather could not divulge the exact location of the new Irish Heather, but did indicate it would be "east" of the current spot. According to the Vancouver Sun, the new location will be in Chinatown. There are a number of vacant restaurant spaces in Chinatown which could potentially be the destination, including those previously belonging to Mamie Taylor's, Campagnolo, and Bestie, among others. As for what to expect at The Irish Heather 2.0? "We are aiming to create a mixture of the original Irish Heather and the most recent version…..the best of both, if we get it right," added Heather. "COVID knocked us down but it didn’t knock us out. We have a plan to reduce our costs, and our overhead..... stay tuned for details of our new home," shared The Irish Heather Tuesday on social media. It's been a tough go for The Irish Heather and its sibling ventures this year. Heather

Transforming the funeral industry with affordability and transparency A h Amherst FFunerall and d cremation i S Services i iis driven by the principle that the best service can also be simple and affordable. Founded by Scott McFarlane, Amherst is a proudly Canadian, locally owned and operated, independent business. Free of ties to large, funeral chains and other funeral homes and chapels, McFarlane was able to base the company on what he truly believed the industry was missing. In 2008, Amherst was established with the firm belief that all families should have the right to quality and affordable funeral services, without having to sacrifice the

dignity both dying di i or respect off b h the h d i and the living. Nearly 10 years later, Amherst still operates on the creed that funeral arrangements should be simple, to the point, and free of sales pitches. “We don’t pressure families,” McFarlane, the owner, funeral director and embalmer of Amherst, said. “When death is imminent, our mission is to allow the families to focus on spending precious time with their loved ones, not to rush them to the funeral home to sign arrangement paperwork and distract them with complicated decisions about costs.”

sually, a full warehouse means good news for a business - not in this case. Tens of thousands of empty beer kegs sit inside Direct Tap's Fraser St. facility in Vancouver; it's yet another sign of the COVID effect on the local hospitality industry. The company provides alcohol storage and delivery services for partner facilities in the province, essentially offering better logistical support to craft liquor manufacturers. President Mike Macquisten says they usually see about one-tenth the number of kegs temporarily housed in the building. "We have over 80,000 empty kegs in this building waiting to be filled. 50 percent of our business is in kegs

and that's down almost 80 percent from what it once was," explains Macquisten. As bar and restaurant sales continue to slump in B.C., it's making for one crowded depot and a lot of thirsty businesses. Macquisten adds, "As patios open up, as things loosen up a little bit, these kegs are going to start to flow and we're excited to get them back in the hands of the breweries that they're owned by." The BC Restaurant and Food Services Association estimates the province's food and beverage industry has lost almost $3.5 billion during the pandemic. By Thor Diakow

Group dedicated to cleaning up Punjabi Market

T

hey're cleaning up the streets literally. Rain or shine, volunteer members of the Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective have started dedicating their time to pick up litter surrounding Main Street in Vancouver's historic Punjabi Market. The area holds great importance for

PMRC creative director Jag Nagra. "This place was home for our parents who came to Canada. A lot of them left their families and this was a place that they could connect to their culture and it means so much to us," explains Nagra. As local businesses continue to struggle in the area, the group sees litter removal as an essential part of preserving the

site's legacy and dignity. They hope to work with city officials to try and prevent future trash accumulation. Last weekend the team spent several hours combing the streets, resulting in 15 full bags of garbage. According to Nagra, councillor Sarah Kirby-Yung is planning a walk-through of the neighbourhood to assess the

current trash situation. At its peak, the Punjabi Market was home to over 300 shops and was the first and largest South Asian Market in North America. The cultural hub celebrated 50 years in 2020.

hile cuteness is in the eye of the beholder, one fluffy Vancouver feline commands countless "awes." Pua, a six-month-old exotic shorthair, enjoys the world from the vantage point of his owners' shoulders. He visits multiple places around the city and isn't bothered by the hustle and bustle around him. The petite pet is named after an adorable pot-bellied pig in Disney's 2016 animated feature film, Moana--and it isn't hard to see why. Pua's owners, Maggie and Vincent Tsui, tell Vancouver Is Awesome they chose the name after noticing that their kitten bears a striking resemblance to the cartoon swine. They both have pink ears and a pink nose, as well as grey patches; they are both decidedly cute, too. Maggie says Pua "is probably the calmest and chillest cat out there" and says they get numerous comments on his peaceful nature. "When he

went to the vet and he got his temperature taken up the bum, he didn’t even squirm!" When he isn't enjoying his shoulder rides around the city, Pua loves cuddling with his owners. Maggie says they cuddle before she heads to work, when she comes home, and before she goes to bed, which she says she finds therapeutic. However, once it's lights out for the humans, the frisky feline comes alive. When Maggie heads to bed "that’s when his playtime begins. He leaves my side jumps onto the ground and spends the night chasing balls and feathers." "He loves playing with things and toys that are light and airy." But Pua isn't only interested in people and playthings. "He recently met up with some dog friends and he plays with them like any dog would - chasing their tails," Maggie says with a laugh. than 5 million likes. Skull Skates picked up on it and shared one to their social media accounts as a nod back to the star, and it got fans of the brand talking. Some found it "embarrassing" while others commented

Ducommun says "I always just feel flattered," to see people wearing it. So far Bieber wearing Skull Skates hasn't resulted in a flood of new customers, like what happened when the singer wore a Thrasher sweatshirt in 2018 and set off a tidal wave of teenagers going out and buying them. However, if you're interested in purchasing their go-to sweatshirt (the closest thing to this varsity jacket as you'll get), they're available for mailorder through their website (skullskates.com) and at their retail store P.D.'s Hot Shop at 3734 W 10th Ave in Vancouver. that they supposed "the Beebs ain't so bad after all," because he knows what's good. Vancouver Is Awesome spoke to Peter Ducommun, the proprietor who founded the iconic brand back in 1978, to get his thoughts. Ducommun tells us that the jacket is a vintage one that was produced in a limited batch in the late 1980s. As he tells it, "ten, maybe fourteen" units were manufactured in East Van. They were distributed to sponsored team riders and staff, and Ducommun still has his in his closet. He's not sure how Bieber got his hands on one of the rare pieces of skateboard history, but he appreciates it, despite there being a seemingly wide gap between Bieber's pop personality and Skull Skates' hardcore ethos. As Ducommun sees it, "Skateboarding welcomes everybody. It always has." He goes on to say "The dude's a skateboarder, he's from Canada, I have no idea what his motivation was or how he got the jacket... but I appreciate the gesture."

easy, he adds, and requires late nights searching online and patience. "Exotic snacks and drinks do command a certain price because of the duties, the shipping, the tariffs, and whatnot, but we try and keep everything as low as possible," he explains. Quarantine is something else they've had to contend with, he adds, which means some

things have arrived after they've expired, never to hit the shelf. Patience is a big piece of the job. "That's part of the exotic snack game," he says. Aside from the food, the store also carries a wide variety of Funko figures, including many uncommon ones (who knew Crash Bandicoot villains had a Vancouver fanbase?). Then there's the Supreme clothing, along with some OVO and Travis Scott branded items. Oh, and an ever-changing selection of shoes. For the trio, Voss says the shop is a passion project as much as a business. They all grew up in West Vancouver, and met when they were young. ancouver police arrested six demonstrators last Saturday after a sit-in protesting old-growth logging in B.C. blocked Cambie St. Bridge for much of the afternoon. The demonstration organized by Extinction Rebellion's Vancouver chapter began at noon at City Hall, from where about 150 demonstrators marched to the bridge—"a major artery to Downtown Vancouver," police pointed out, adding that protestors "blocked traffic in both directions and caused major disruptions." The Vancouver Police Department said its officers allowed the group to peacefully assemble on the bridge before eventually asking participants to step aside and allow for traffic flow to resume. arrested for mischief and intimidation by blocking a roadway, according to police. The six individuals were taken to jail and released from custody upon promising to appear in court at a later date. Extinction Rebellion Vancouver had issued a warning about its members' plans to occupy the Cambie Bridge and disrupt weekend traffic. On Thursday, the group dropped a banner over the bridge railings to announce that they intended to engage in "peaceful civil disobedience" on March 27. The action was purposefully planned to take place on the same day as a mass mobilization at the B.C. Legislature that's calling for an immediate end to oldgrowth logging, particularly at the Fairy Creek watershed on historically Pacheedaht lands, near Port Renfrew on Vancouver Island.

Prior to reaching the bridge, demonstrators in Vancouver also staged a "die-in" at Cambie and Broadway Saturday. Organizers said the act "symbolizes death, a pause to think about the small sacrifices we can make to avoid further catastrophe in this mass extinction." Exactly one month ago, three of the group's "rebels" were also arrested after staging a similar Saturday afternoon sit-in that blocked the Hornby and Smithe intersection in downtown Vancouver. Extinction Rebellion is a global movement that began in the U.K in 2018. It claims to use non-violent civil disobedience to call for increased climate action, which group members say is necessary "to halt mass extinction and minimise the risk of social collapse." n Lucky's Exotic Bodega, Lady Gaga Oreos, Cheetos Mac'n'Cheese, Skittles drink and Walkers Prawn Cocktail chips all share shelf space, while supplies last. The recently opened shop mixes the neighbourhood feel of a bodega with a snack selection dreamt up by someone who spent time in 7-11's around the world. T.J. (Tim) Voss started Lucky's with his business partner and longtime friend Sam Sabor; another childhood friend, Martin Sahami is the third part of the 'Bodega Boys.' "The whole premise of our idea, the bodega, was to be somewhere in the community that everyone could come together," Voss says. Lucky's has an eye-grabbing Instagram account (@ luckysbodega) that features some of the more bizarre, exotic or special items, including Simpsons Oreos, Pokemon cereal, and Funfetti Oreo pancake mix. Voss says the snack selection is the heart of the shop. One of their first big sellers was a Reese's cupcake, Sahami says, and more recently a triple flavour insect dish went fast. Because many of the foods are coming from overseas, the shop has a constantly evolving selection. "Larvae," Voss says. "So they came in three flavours, bbq, Mexican spice and cheddar cheese." They also have several coolers stocked full of different pops and juices (including, occasionally Sprite Fiber+) and two big shelves filled with cereals that either mash-up two flavours or are a flavour unrelated to cereal (like Tim Horton's or Dunkaroos). "What we specialize in is snacks from around the world," he says. "So America, UK, Asia, those are the three major places we get our snacks from." That explains why Walkers chips (a UK version of Lays) are everywhere, along with a lot of things that don't use the Latin alphabet. "We've been waiting weeks and weeks and weeks for those UK chips that just came through," Voss says of a shelf of chips. The Skittles, Twix and Mars drinks (which are dairy-based) all come from the UK as well. The exotic snack gig isn't

backing Microsoft’s cloud services — to Vancouver. The new local cloud infrastructure is meant to provide additional support to customers in Western Canada dealing with latencysensitive workloads.

This year’s 500-person expansion will bring Microsoft’s local presence to 1,700 workers and comes at a time when demand for local talent has been increasing. By Tyler Orton - BIV

istorically, female sockeye salmon have outnumbered male salmon when they reach their spawning grounds, but UBC research is showing that's no longer the case in the Fraser

River. The title of a publication captures the issue well: "Exceptionally high mortality ty of adult female salmon: a large-scale pattern and a conservation concern." It brought together data from nearly 20 studies of salmon. Researchers have found that for every male salmon that doesn't return to the stream where it was born, tw t o or three female salmon don't return. “This is causing skewed sex ratios in their spawning grounds, something that has been observed in recent years,” says lead researcher Dr. Scott Hinch in a press release. “The implications on the health of Fraser River stocks are concerning, particularly as Pacific salmon populations in British Columbia have been declining over the past several decades.” The trend has been observed in sockeye salmon in other systems, and in coho and chinook. The implication of declining salmon stock has environmental and economic implications. Hinch and the researchers believe there are four reasons this is happening: depletion of energy, reduced cardiac capacity t , stress and disease. For example, Female salmon

are more likely to die due to environmental changes, like warmer or more turbulent water. “Females have higher heart rates and smaller hearts than males leading to reduced cardiac capacity ty. Because female gonads are so large compared to males, they have to divert way more blood to them especially as the eggs are developing and this requires even more oxy xygen supply from the heart, so it’s likely that when the migration is difficult, females are not able to get enough oxy xygen to swim," says Hinch in the release. They're now recommending some changes to help reverse the trend. “A few years ago we studied the migration of sockeye

salmon through the Seton River Dam and Fishway near Lillooet, B.C., and proposed that some small adjustments by BC Hydro to flows at this dam could improve salmon passage, which they did," Hinch says in the release. Male violence against Asian women is an ever present reality VANCOUVER CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

Sakura at Home: B.C. chefs create take-out meals for cherry blossom season

O I

t took a white man murdering six Asian women in a massage parlor in Atlanta to instigate the public conversation on the racism and misogynist violence that Asian women face in North America. The COVID-19 pandemic has been used as an explanation for recent aggressive and violent expressions of racism against Asian people, but the harassment, exploitation, hyper-sexualization, and violence that Asian women endure is an ever-present reality. A review of 500 cases of Asian women who called Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter in the last couple of years shows that: 230 women called us because their current, or ex, male intimate partner raped or had beaten them.

103 women called us because a man that they knew superficially (through a social circumstance like a party, or mutual friends, or as a service provider like a taxi driver, doctor, or salesperson) had sexually assaulted them. 68 women called us because their father or other adult male family members/family friends raped them when they were girls. 36 women called us because their male supervisor or coworker sexually assaulted them. 36 women called us because a man who was a complete stranger assaulted them. The Asian women victim’s relationship to their attackers is consistent with what we see of how all men get access to women, regardless of race. A closer look into what Asian women tell us reveals a particularly racist element to the male violence that they experience. Asian women tell us that their abusive male partners make pornographic films of them, playing up the misogynist stereotype of Asian women as sexually submissive. Asian women tell us that they were brought to Canada on a promise of decent work and when they arrive, they’re instead confined to servitude through exploitive jobs. Asian women tell us that they, and other female workers, are repetitively harassed in Asian restaurants but that they don’t dare to complain for fear of being fired. Asian immigrants sponsored by violent husbands tell us that the men threaten them by saying that they’ll be sent back if she reports the violence. Women from the Philippines employed as domestic

workers and caregivers in Canada tell us they’re being sexually harassed and assaulted by their employers, but if they leave those jobs, they’ll lose their ability to stay in Canada. Many of the Asian women who call us don’t speak English. They did not find out about us through an internet search or seeing an interview with us in the media. Somehow, they got our phone number from someone who knew that we could help them. Regardless of the reason they call us, Asian women often tell us that they’re constantly propositioned to have sex for money by men that they know, as well as men who are strangers to them. And there are the women who do not call us. There are the Asian women trapped in brothels disguised as massage parlours all over the Lower Mainland, with no English or alternatives to earn an income. We don’t know how many women are in these “massage parlours” but a superficial Google search yielded dozens of advertisements in Vancouver of places offering “Exotic Asian massage.” The number of hidden, unadvertised places is likely much greater. As the Asian Women for Equality group wrote in its statement on the Georgia shooting, “Asian women are fetishized as being submissive, exotic, and sexually available. Our bodies are used, commodified and trafficked for profit and men’s sexual pleasure. Arising, in part, from a history of exploitation, war, and imperialism, these harmful stereotypes of Asian women are embedded in the expectations and beliefs of white male sex buyers.” We must respond to the plight of Asian women. Antiracism campaigns like the one that the BC government has just launched with the message “we can’t tackle racism if we can’t talk about it” are not going to cut it. We need concrete actions. Upon entry, women who arrive in Canada from other countries must be provided with written information, in their own language, regarding their right to be safe and free from violence and exploitation, along with contact information for local anti-violence women’s organizations. Men who batter, rape, buy, or pimp women must be criminally charged, and their women victims must be granted the ability to stay in Canada if they don't already have citizenship. And last, the economic vulnerability of women that keeps them captive in exploitive jobs, abusive marriage, and prostitution, must be addressed with the provision of guaranteed livable income. Hilla Kerner is a Collective Member of the Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter

ne of the most delicious ways to celebrate those beautiful pink blooms signalling the start of spring in Vancouver is Sakura Night, a key fundraiser that's part of the annual Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival. With the fest shifting into virtual mode for 2021, B.C. chefs have created special "Sakura at Home" meals for a new way to celebrate - and raise funds - for the festive evening. Among those taking part in Sakura at Home are Vancouver chefs Andrea Carlson of Burdock & Co; Vikram Vij and Meeru Dhalwala of Vij's Restaurant; Kazuhiro Hayashi of Miku Waterfront; and the team from Salmon n' Bannock (Vancouver's only Indigenous restaurant). Will Lew of Nootka Marine Adventures resorts on Vancouver Island is creating a meal alongside Vancouver chef Clement Chan. Additionally, Top Chef Canada 2019 winner Paul Moran, who has launched foraged food business Wild Origins, will be creating a meal kit for four that guests can prepare themselves at home. "These flowers feed our spirit and fill our heart with hope and promise…feed your spirit and body with the variety of the seasonal selection of flavours and textures being showcased at Sakura at Home," said Darnell Stager of Salmon n’ Bannock. The chefs have been tasked with creating meals that capture the beauty of the cherry blossom. Guests will choose which restaurant's meal they want when they purchase their tickets for the April 25 virtual event. Learn more at www.bit.ly/vanblossoms2021

f there's something strange in your neighbourhood, these are definitely the people you want to call. Paranormal Spectrum Investigations BC is a Metro Vancouver-based volunteer group dedicated to looking into the unexplainable. The team, established in 2019, is now made up of six people and is always looking for more members. If you encounter a bizarre occurrence in your home or business, they will investigate the matter on-site and provide a detailed report of the findings, free of charge. According to their website, the group will "exhaust every avenue when looking for logical reasoning to paranormal claims, and by using the latest investigative equipment anything [they] can't explain will be presented to you in a way that you can understand and handle emotionally, spiritually and psychologically." One of the most important aspects of the group's work is maintaining a judgment-free zone so people can feel comfortable sharing their experiences. Co-founder Mike Lutke says about 60 per cent of their observations don't have a logical explanation. The crew takes the work seriously while managing to have some fun, but skeptics still remain. Member Paige Wilson says, "I get a lot of people coming up to me with a lot of different opinions; it almost becomes an argument of them trying to convince me that what I'm doing is a waste of time." While individual inspections have been put on hold during the pandemic, the group is eager to continue their investigations once restrictions have been lifted and they encourage anyone to get in touch if they have a potential case.

TransLink fares to increase by 2.3 per cent on July 1

T

he TransLink Board of Directors has unanimously approved a motion that will increase Metro Vancouver transit fares in 2021. With help from the BC Safe Restart Agreement, the increase to fares will be an average of 2.3 per cent instead of the originally planned 4.1 per cent increase. This Transit Tariff amendment incorporates a 2.3 per cent increase to the regular and discounted fares effective July 1, 2021. TransLink says the increase will generate an estimated $4 million per year. Annual fare increases were approved and planned for in 2017 as part of the 10-Year Mayors’ Vision to help pay for transit expansion projects.

"An annual increase of 4.6 per cent and 4.1 per cent were originally planned for in 2020 and 2021 as part of Phase Two of the Mayors’ Vision," a spokesperson for TransLink tells Vancouver Is Awesome in an emailed statement. "To provide economic relief to our customers during the COVID-19 pandemic, the planned 4.6 per cent increase to fares in 2020 was cancelled. 100% of the revenue gained from fare increases goes toward regional transit expansion." The transportation agency says ridership on its system has been around 40 per cent of 2019 levels since the summer of 2020. By Elana Shepert

P

art scavenger hunt, part hide-and-seek, and part race, bike tag is a relatively new activity in Vancouver with a growing roster of participants. Ken Eucker describes it a little more succinctly, calling it a "mystery photo tag game." He's a software engineer from Portland and one of the people behind biketag.org, a website built to facilitate the games in 2018. Bike tag is fairly simple. A photo is posted online of a bike in a specific spot. You figure out where

that is, ride your bike to that spot and take a photo of your bike there. Then you ride to a nearby spot and take your bike's photo at the second location and send both pics in to the bike tag team. And then, if you were first, your photo of the second location is posted as the next place to find for everyone else. In Vancouver, the current game has seen over 200 spots found, and Tyrone Siglos is one of the local leaders. "I think of it as a tag like when

TYRONE SIGLOS

New cycling game encourages participants to explore Vancouver

someone tags a wall," Siglos explains. "You're tagging a spot; someone will tag a spot with their bike." He says the game helps get people

out and about, exploring the city with a goal. "That's really kind of the gist of it, it's pretty straightforward," he says. "It's easy to play, but it does take a bit of recognizing spots and solving clues." Some spots are iconic and easy to find, others are more difficult and require deciphering a clue, which also may be easy or hard. Usually, the spots are close together, since they have to be done on the same ride. "It's an awesome way to bike around during the pandemic," Siglos says.

The biketag.org website and community also make it possible for independent communities to influence each other; for example, Siglos's efforts on Instagram (@ vancouverbiketag) are used as an example for other cities. Overall the bike tag community is run on enthusiasm and volunteers, Eucker notes. Where it grows from here is up to those who participate, he adds. There are just two central tenets: exploration and getting active. "The more it grows, the more it opens the city to casual biking," he says. By Brendan Kergin
