An exceptional culinary experience underpins Tapestry’s focus on wellness Tapestry understands that a healthy and well-balanced diet is a central element of aging well, which is why its exceptional culinary experience is a defining feature of its communities for independent adults. In addition to keeping our bodies functioning optimally and providing energy for everyday life, a healthy and nutritious diet plays a crucial role in protecting us from infectious illnesses and chronic diseases — and the benefits for seniors are particularly significant. According to research from Harvard, “lifestyle factors may help delay the onset of cognitive decline—the erosion in mental skills and memory often seen before dementia—and dementia itself.” Food plays a prominent role in Harvard’s lifestyle factors and suggests that cognitive health may be bolstered by a diet rich with fruits, vegetables, and healthy sources of protein. Smart food choices can also help to control cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure and cholesterol. Tapestry understands that a healthy and well-balanced diet is a central element of aging well, which is why its culinary experience is such a defining feature of the communities’ offering.

Tapestry’s communities differentiate themselves by featuring Restaurants and Pubs, where residents can enjoy wonderfully delicious and nutritious options, as well as a socially-connected environment. “Eating well is not only important to good health, it is also central to our life’s experience,” says Adena Waffle, Vice President, Tapestry. “Every Tapestry community has multiple venues so residents can choose where to dine. They can enjoy a more casual meal in the Pub while watching the game or indulge in a three-course meal in our Restaurant with friends and family.” Tapestry hires professional Red Seal chefs to oversee the development of appetizing menus akin to those found in the finest local restaurants. Menus rotate seasonally to incorporate fresh, local, and sustainable ingredients — and are prepared with a high level of quality and care. Tapestry has a variety of options that cater to individual dietary

preferences, including vegetarian and gluten-free. With Tapestry’s focus on wellness, menu selections are also reviewed by a certified dietician to ensure meal options are nutritionally balanced and aligned to Canada’s Food Guide, which recommends a balanced approach with an emphasis on plant-based nutrients and high-quality proteins. While residents can choose to dine in either the Pub or Restaurant, if they prefer to eat at home and enjoy cooking their own meals, they can certainly do so within their suites, which are uniquely equipped with full kitchens. In suite dining is also an option at Tapestry, offering the convenience and delight of room service on those occasions where a prepared bite at home sounds most satisfying! In addition to enjoying Tapestry’s unparalleled culinary experience, residents enjoy an exceptional offering of programs and services, including

a variety of programming aligned to the 7 Dimensions of Wellness, weekly housekeeping and linen service, and concierge and driver services to support convenience and effortless living at its finest. “I used to teach cooking and nutrition.” Now I’m the one who’s learning. I taught cooking and nutrition at high school for 22 years, so I can appreciate the benefits of fresh, healthy food when it’s well prepared. While I enjoy having a full kitchen where I can cook my own meals, I am constantly impressed with the chef at Tapestry. The food is exceptional and always a highlight of my day. It seems to me this same level of quality and caring extends to every aspect of my experience here at Tapestry. And like the wonderful food, it nourishes me. trio of conservationists is hoping to raise awareness around the issue of old-growth logging in B.C. by way of a visual campaign on social media. Steve Thorp, Owen Perry, and John Kelsey are like-minded creatives that came together to produce and distribute a series of images entitled “Imagine This”. Thorp and Perry are the idea guys; Kelsey, a professional photographer, put together the visuals using stock photos combined with a little bit of Photoshop know-how. Combined, they have 60,000 followers on Instagram, to which they posted the campaign. “Imagine This” is, so far, a collection of two sets of before and after images. One pictures the Capilano Suspension Bridge as it appears today, along with a Photoshopped version of the same photo showing what it would look like if they were to log the area around it. Another juxtaposes Stanley Park looking pristine with what it might look like after a clearcut. By choosing locations that are well known to urbanites, the group hopes to “bring the issue closer to home for people that might turn a blind eye because it's not in their own backyard.” That issue is, very specifically, the potential of old-growth being logged in a valley on southwest Vancouver Island right now, at a place called Fairy Creek. Since last August, protestors have been holding a blockade that has so far prevented access to the Fairy Creek watershed northeast of Port Renfrew, where Teal Cedar Products has built roads and plans to harvest in one of its tenures. In a statement, the company claims that its plans have been

"mischaracterized" by opponents, which are reported to be made up of people from all walks of life including doctors, lawyers, and tree planters. Teal Vice-president Gerrie Kotze says "We are planning to harvest only a small area, up at the head of the watershed well away from Fairy Lake and the San Juan River," he said. "We will harvest with the care and attention to the environment British Columbians expect, and mill every log we cut right here in B.C." An injunction against the protestors was granted by the B.C. Supreme Court in early April and has yet to be enforced, while support for the protestors continues to grow. However the land is on the territory of the Pacheedaht First Nation, and while some of its members are in support of the blockade, it says it will determine what will be logged and preserved in its territory through a resource stewardship plan. It does not support the protest taking place in the area. Thorp tells Vancouver Is Awesome that the NDP government could solve the issue easily if they were to “protect all remaining old-growth forests in B.C., immediately.” He notes that there have been multiple independent reviews of the forest management system, and that “they need to listen to the data and science and make decisions now, before it's too late.” In the meantime, he and his co-campaigners plan to continue to bring attention to this issue with dramatic imagery that draws people in. “Fairy Creek logging is sometimes hard for people to visualize until it's imagined happening in the park they walk on weekends.” By Bob Kronbauer with files from Elana Shepert, Darron Kloster and The Canadian Press

ust over a year ago, Vancouver photographer Steven Audia was eagerly preparing to present an exhibition of his work. Planned for March 2020, that show was intended to be a collection of photographs he had captured over the span of a decade. Like many artistic projects set to launch last spring, the exhibit was swiftly cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, the photographer has refocused his efforts and is preparing to show his work yet again. But rather than a decade's worth of photographs, this solo exhibit will instead be comprised of 20 black and white portraits, taken during a single, particularly challenging year. Titled 20/2020, Audia's exhibit is set to debut at The James Black Gallery—a queer-led arts and culture hub in Mount Pleasant—next weekend. It's scheduled to run from Friday, April 23 to Sunday, April 25. The images explore how the challenges of 2020 shifted Audia's perspective and approach to photography over the last year, and primarily follow a theme of "closeness." "Lockdown came, and we learned to fear the people and air around us," the artist explained in the exhibit's

STEVEN AUDIA

PUBLISHER AND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Bob Kronbauer bobk@vancouverisawesome.com | 604-439-2688

description. "We were forced inside as the world outside changed. I tried my best to continue photographically documenting as I’ve always done. As the year progressed and my access to the external world and people that once drove my work shrunk, I had to become more aware of not only my immediate surroundings, but of finding liberation within. I tried to turn the camera on myself and the results were of little interest to me. I needed to look further than what a mirror could provide, I needed to go inward." Audia added that his images got progressively darker over the course of the year, with shadows engulfing his subjects.

"However in these moments I wanted to find the light, and I wanted to experience my subjects finding that light in their own way," he wrote. "I no longer wanted to just photograph people; portraits as I knew them became too surface. I want to see beyond what flesh is holding in and how I can connect and create space apart from my physical external world. "These 20 images made over the course of 2020 are just the beginning of that exploration." Audia's 20/2020 will be available for viewing at The James Black Gallery, located at 144 E 6th Ave., by appointment this month. By Megan Lalonde

An insider's look at vaccinating the people of the Downtown Eastside

T

his past January I headed into Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. I was going to a part of that community I know well – at the corner of Pender and Carrall. It’s a spot where, for more than two decades, I used to hang out, cop drugs, or deal. This time, though, I was there to peddle something else – COVID vaccines. On the same corner I used to sell drugs, I was now pushing Pfizer. And with it, a little bit of hope for a community that’s been hit hard by two public health emergencies. This week marked the fifth year since a public health emergency was declared because of toxic drug poisonings. People are overdosing and dying in communities across the province – across the country, really – but the DTES has been the epicentre in many ways. It’s not because of overdoses alone. Many people in this community have been dealing with stresses of rapid gentrification, homelessness, compromised immunity, and poverty. And for the past year, COVID-19, which has compounded the impacts of all these things. To make matters worse, physical distancing and isolation are extremely challenging in this community, where many residents live in communal housing with shared bathrooms and kitchens. It’s a tight-knit community where everyone has to rely on one another. The folks at Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) were especially concerned for residents who face homelessness, poverty, compromised immunity, and a lack

of access to resources, including health services, as well as Black, Indigenous and people of colour and other vulnerable communities in the DTES, who are disproportionately affected by COVID. After a public exposure in August, cases increased through the fall and into winter. And though we didn’t see a significant spread of COVID, cases did begin to spike at the start of this year. That’s why VCH formed an outreach team to support with the vaccination rollout in the DTES. I’m proud to be part of

an amazing team of nurses who’ve been holding regular vaccination clinics in the community since January. Some people run from COVID, but this nursing team is running right at it in order to protect the community. Each week we head down to a corner in the neighbourhood, set up a table, and lineup the syringes. The nurses do their thing and I do mine: hustling out to find people who haven’t been vaccinated. When I bring someone over to the vaccination table, one of the first things I get asked is if I’ve been vaccinated. For many, that someone they know also has gotten the vaccine is reassuring and feels safer. This is a community that’s earned its distrust of the health care system, so we do what we can to build up that trust. It’s about providing a bit of human connection by meeting them where they’re at — on the street, where they live, next to their friends. With that jab comes relief. I’ve seen it on people’s faces. Some have cried they are so overwhelmed. Just weeks after the vast majority of those at risk received their first doses of vaccine, we have seen a dramatic decline in the number of new cases identified in the DTES. It’s taking a little bit of pressure off the community at a time when that’s badly needed. What’s amazing for me is living in that community for decades, homeless and struggling with substance use, and now I’m in the position to be able to go back to the same street corners where I once sold and used drugs to survive and offer people the vaccine. It’s a little bit of hope during a tough time. Guy Felicella is a Peer Clinical Advisor at the BC Centre on Substance Use. Follow him on Twitter at @guyfelicella.

Photographer catches stunning shots of eagles fighting at Jericho Beach

I

t only lasted 20 seconds, but luckily Adam Wang had his camera on hand to catch a series of stunning shots as two eagles fought on the ground. The bald eagle brawl happened at Jericho Beach Park on Good Friday. Wang, an aspiring wildlife photographer, and his wife Adele Liu were out looking for a different bird altogether. On their way to the parking lot, a group of crows caught their attention near a well-known aerie. "It happened really fast," Liu says, describing how the eagles were surrounded by crows after falling from, or near, the nest. The pair moved closer, with Wang snapping shots of the two birds fighting in the dirt. His photos capture the speed and ferocity of the battle with soil, talons, and feathers flying everywhere. "Once they touched the ground all the crows started screaming," Wang tells Vancouver Is Awesome. At first, they thought it might have been an acrobatic mating dance, where eagles will meet in mid-air and fall to the earth, but they realized it was something else as the fight continued on the ground. It ended with the victor holding the defeated eagle's head with its talon. "It just happened, and then it just stopped," Liu says. "We thought the eagle underneath was dead. He didn't actually die, so it was good." Luckily Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (OWL) has a sign up nearby and Liu called. Within 30 minutes members of the group arrived. Liu says the two eagles were in the same position the entire, between the end of the fight and the arrival of OWL (which is why they thought the defeated owl might have been deceased). "He didn't move for the entire 30 minutes we were waiting for the rescue team to come," she says. Wang says he thinks someone called 911 after seeing the two birds. When OWL arrived they used a long net to collect the two birds; the victor wasn't too keen on that, Liu says, and locked his talons around the net until he was inside a car. "OWL were amazing, they came really fast," Liu says, noting she was impressed with the group's work. In speaking with OWL staff the couple learned the two eagles are likely both male (it's difficult to tell with bald eagles since males and females have the same plumage). They believe one male was defending the nest site, which is monitored by the Pacific Spirit Park Society. By Brendan Kergin

New Chilean fast food restaurant opens in the West End

A

new casual spot for traditional Chilean eats has opened up in Vancouver.

Puro Chile has moved into the space at 1101 Denman in the West End that had previously been home to a Fatburger fast food franchise. Specializing in what it calls "Chilean fast food," Puro Chile is serving up things like churrascos (a traditional Chilean sandwich made with sliced beef and your choice of topping combos), chorrillanas (fries piled with sliced steak, fried egg, and BBQ sauce), and loaded pork hot dogs.

In addition to the casual bites, Puro Chile has milkshakes and several traditional Chilean drinks made with alcohol, like the Piscola (pisco and Coca-Cola), Borgoña (red wine and strawberries), and Fanshop (beer and Fanta). Puro Chile launched at the end of March and is currently able to offer take-out. Delivery is available via third-party apps SkipTheDishes and UberEats. The location is steps from the beach at English Bay, perfect for folks looking for something new to tuck into while out enjoying the spring sunshine. By Lindsay William-Ross

trivia game, and, of course, a vintage couch. In her quest for accuracy, Bruinn and her husband stripped the couch back "to its bare bones," even going so far as to make a few structural changes to the furniture and build a new coffee table complete with green edges. "I don't know how to sew, I don't have a sewing machine, but I hand-stitched some covers for the chairs," she added. "I tried to make it as authentic as I could of Central Perk." She's collected masks of all six Friends and will change up her disguise depending on the day, too. "I've got a guitar, so sometimes I'll put on my Phoebe mask and I'll pretend to play 'Smelly Cat,'" she said with a laugh. Since the winter rain eased up, Bruinn has been taking 15 minutes out of each sunny afternoon to set up the Friends "coffee shop" on the grass-covered street corner adjacent to her home— "It's cheaper and better than going to the gym," she quipped—where she'll spend a few hours sitting outside, watching the goings-on of her neighbourhood and waving at those who pass by. She's typically armed with a cooler full of sparkling water and is always ready to welcome socially-distanced or masked visitors for a photo, a conversation, or a laugh.

ave you driven by the corner of Marine Drive and Balaclava Street recently, only to spot a recreation of the Central Perk coffee shop from Friends? Perhaps you've even seen Monica, Rachel, Phoebe, Ross, Joey or Chandler hanging out on the couch? If you're wondering how that famous orange couch ended up in a residential Vancouver neighbourhood, no, it's not a clever publicity stunt from Warner Bros. or HBO Max in an attempt to promote the much-hyped Friends reunion special that's supposedly hitting TV screens soon. Instead, it's the work of an outgoing Vancouver mom who's looking for a way to stay busy, connect with others, and bring a smile to her neighbours' faces as the COVID-19 pandemic rages on. Anne Bruinn said the idea began all the way back in October, when she started dressing up in a different Halloween costume to welcome her daughter home from school each day. But the live-action Halloween displays ended up gaining even more attention from neighbours and passersby than from Bruinn's 10-year-old. "People loved it," she recalled. "As they drove by, they'd wave and try to figure out if I was real, and so after my daughter got home I would just stay out there because it was so fun." Bruinn's display took on a Christmas theme once the holidays rolled around— think SCTV's Bob and Doug McKenzie—and even turned into a live recreation of the Bernie Sanders inauguration meme, before her love of Friends inspired her to take the community service to another level. Over the winter, she gradually gathered odds and ends to create her own outdoor Central Perk setup: Friendsthemed pillow covers, armchairs, a puzzle, a

Mattress Recycling (founded in Vancouver, now based in Hope) and Vancouver's Backback Buddies are delivering 200 meal bags to the Hope Food Bank each week. The packages are easily transported, thanks to a donation of 300 plastic bins from CoquitlamIKEA. The food is then distributed by the Hope & Area Transition Society, Hope Community Services, Fraser Cascade School District No. 78, and Fraser

"I have two young kids and one on the way and I can't stand the idea of kids being hungry. Vancouver Aquarium under new ownership Vancouver Aquarium would "run out of cash to operate by spring 2021, even after significantly reducing the workf kforce, government subsidies, and generous financial support from donors, government (federal and provincial) and community t partners." Prior to its fall closure, the storied - and polarizing - venue had suggested they may not be able to remain open at all due the financial losses sustained as a result of the pandemic. The Aquarium says Herschend has acquired 100% ownership of the Vancouver Aquarium which will continue to be led by Chief Operating Officer, Clint Wright, who has been with the Vancouver Aquarium for more than 30 years. Ocean Wise will remain an independent charitable non-profit ocean conservation organization led by renowned conservationist Lasse Gustavsson, adds the venue in its announcement. Herschend, which launched in 1960, says it is "considered the nation’s largest family-owned themed attractions corporation." They "take great pride in owning and partnering in leading theme parks including Silver Dollar City ty in Branson, Missouri,

and Dollyw y ood in Tennessee’s Great Smoky k Mountains of which Dolly Parton is our partner," according to the Herschend site. Under its "Herschend Live" banner it operates the Harlem Globetrotters. The Vancouver Aquarium adds Herschend is "the owner of tw t o aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (“AZA”). AZA accreditation represents the highest standard in animal care and welfare while providing a fun, safe, and educational family experience. The focus of Herschend’s aquariums is to inspire families to learn more, care more, and do more for animals and their environments." As part of the agreement, Herschend will donate 1% of annual gross revenues from the Vancouver Aquarium to Ocean Wise to support the organization’s ambitious conservation program. “Ocean Wise is pleased to have gained Herschend as an ally in our

Here are the reasons why spring is the perfect season to take care of your home roofing repairs Locally-owned and with over 20 years of experience, Absolute Roof Solutions is helping homeowners in Vancouver repair and restore their roofs in time for the warmer months ahead. Now that the weather outside is finally decent, it’s a good time to start getting on top of your home repair projects! Spring is the most optimal time to take a good look at your roof and see if there are any issues that should be addressed through roof repairs. For instance — has your roof lost shingles during the winter? Do you see broken, warped, or crumbling shingles? Does your roof have a lot of accumulated moss? Do you see cracks or broken bricks in your chimney? Are your gutters clogged? These are all situations that need to be fixed immediately to safeguard your home from roof leaks and prevent from having to do fullon roof replacements. In fact, not making such repairs can also violate the shingle warranty of your roof! Spring is the best time to deal with roofing projects for the following reasons: • Discover hidden problems created over the winter Structural damages and leaks caused by winter weather can now be found and repaired before the heat of summer arrives. • Moderate temperatures are best for roofing materials In cold weather, shingles can crack and break easily while being worked with. In hot

weather, shingles can be damaged by simply walking on them. Working in moderate temperatures is best. • Better schedules Repairs and replacements can be completed more quickly during the spring before things really take off during the high demand summer season. As one of the Lower Mainland’s top roofing companies, locally-owned Absolute Roof Solutions offers roof inspections, repairs and replacement services for residential and commercial properties. They can handle all roofing services, such as leak location and repair, roof repair and maintenance, roof replacement, moss removal, skylight repair, servicing on chimneys and gutters, and more. Canucks management has a communication problem

DAN TOULGOET

W

hen it comes to being in a leadership role in any industry, communication is key. Hockey is no different. A fundamental part of the job of a general manager in the NHL is communication. It’s an area where Canucks GM Jim Benning has struggled. Most recently, it came to light that the Canucks players were not happy with the communication from the team’s leadership during their time in isolation under the NHL’s COVID protocol. At a time when the team needed Benning to advocate for them, the players ended up in the awkward situation of needing to publicly air their grievances with the NHL’s proposed schedule for the Canucks’ remaining games, with J.T. Miller speaking to the media on behalf of his teammates. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, long seen as sympathetic to Benning, spoke on Saturday during Hockey Night in Canada of the breakdown between the players and the Canucks organization. “There will be some long-term conversations that have to happen here between players and organization,” said Friedman. “They haven’t really said much publicly about the team but privately I’ve heard they’re upset and I think there are some fences that have to get mended here.” “I think the players are upset,” he added. “The last couple weeks were really hard and I think they just felt that they were kind of in the dark about what was going to happen.” When Miller went public with the players’ issues with the schedule and the quick return, it came as a surprise to the NHL, who seemed to think the players were on board with the proposed schedule. NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly even said, “The team wants to finish its season. We aren’t twisting arms here.” It seems entirely possible that the NHL got the okay from the Canucks as an organization for the return to play on Friday

but that wasn’t actually okay with the players themselves. That shows a grievous lack of communication between management and the players. With that in mind, it’s hard not to read into Canucks captain Bo Horvat’s comments when he was directly asked about the support the players had received from Canucks’ management and ownership. “The amount of support we got from the fans reaching out, our families, different people around the league was amazing,” said Horvat, neglecting to mention either Canucks’ management or ownership.

Of course, communication has been an issue for the Canucks under Benning for years in many different ways. Benning has had some utterly disastrous press conferences with the media, an area where Trevor Linden played a crucial role as President of Hockey Operations before he and the Canucks parted ways. While Linden wasn’t just the face of the front office — he played a significant role in decision-making as well — he was far more eloquent than Benning, even if what he said didn’t always match what the Canucks were actually doing. Internally, there have been rumblings of communication issues between management and staff, with Benning and assistant GM John Weisbrod neglecting to discuss key decisions with departments affected by those decisions. One area where that was made public was after Judd Brackett was let go as director of amateur scouting — a point of contention was Benning making hiring and firing decisions in the scouting department without even discussing those changes with Brackett. Then there’s the communication — or lack thereof — with outgoing free agents this past offseason. There have been reports that Chris Tanev felt disrespected on his way out of Vancouver and that Troy Stecher was left in the dark with no communication of the Canucks plans. Despite Benning’s claim that he “ran out of time” in negotiations with Tyler Toffoli, according to Toffoli himself, “They didn’t really have a whole lot of conversations with us, with myself and my agent.” To put it all together, there are indications that Benning and his management team have struggled to communicate with unsigned players and their agents, their staff, and now current players, who felt in the dark and unsupported in the biggest crisis of their careers. Communication might be the biggest issue in the Canucks organization. By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

T

he BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) and the BC Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Fisheries are interested in examining the transmission of the COVID-19 virus to domestic animals, particularly household cats. They are calling on the public for help; specifically, cat owners who have been recently diagnosed with COVID-19. "Recent evidence of natural infections suggests that some animals can be infected and indirectly transmit the COVID-19 virus," explains a news release. "This study will look at the risks of COVID-19 virus transmission from humans to cats and will help fill important information gaps on companion animals and COVID-19." Residents who sign up to help will participate in a "pre-sampling survey" over the phone before each scheduled sample collection date. If their cat tests positive, sampling will continue every week until a negative test result is found.

The BCCDC adds that "this is a contact-less study; you will be asked to place your cat(s) in a carrier outside the front door for the sample collection team." No carrier? No problem. The BCCDC team will provide people with a sanitized carrier; a mobile station will also be set up outside their homes to test cat(s) and bring them back to them. The team can sample up to three cats per household. Experienced animal care professionals will use "safe and humane manual restraint methods" to minimize stress to cats, as well as "fear-free" handling techniques. If these methods are not successful, the sampling team will make the decision not to proceed with sampling on that day and repeat on another day, or they may decide to not sample the cat at all if it is too stressful on the cat. If you're interested in participating, have tested positive for COVID-19 within the last

RAMADAN CONTINUED FROM PAGE 12 And there are notes explaining if a place sells alcohol or is only partially Halal. Right now, like most restaurants, the Muslim restaurant community is facing tough times due to the pandemic. Normally Ramadan brings people together, often at those establishments, for the evening meal of Iftar. This year, though, it won't be the same, Khan says, and it's important there's support for those who need it.

"Instead of being able to go out, now people have to take the food home and enjoy it with their immediate family," he notes. During Ramadan there's also a section for specials related to the holy month, but it's not an ad-laden page. Khan notes they're not making any money on the website; it's provided as a service. "You can't pay for a listing on our website," he says. "It's a volunteer effort; there's no ulterior motive other than a community service."

In addition to the website, they run an active Facebook group that focuses on Halal food and the community around it. Khan says they're reaching beyond Vancouver now, with listings as far away as Calgary. "It's definitely one of those growing areas," he says, pointing to Halal food options showing up in general grocery stores."It's a niche market but it's growing in Canada." By Brendan Kergin

any Vancouver residents are getting crafty during the coronavirus pandemic, and a Gastown mainstay has had a boom in business as a result. Dressew has been in business for over 60 years. The family-owned fabric and sewing accessory shop, located on West Hastings Street, has seen its share of ups and downs over the years, but nothing quite like a global pandemic. Despite COVID-19, sales are booming as restrictions on social gatherings over the last year have motivated many to broaden their arts and crafts skills or spruce up the homestead. Not surprisingly, purchases of fabric used for homemade masks have been surging as well.

"Probably in the first few months, 80 percent of our sales were materials for making masks," says president David McKie. The supply store has undergone a few recent changes; they've moved a lot of sales online (Dressew created its first website last spring) and in-store shopping hours have been adjusted. Plans are even underway to begin shipping to customers throughout the province very soon. Although it's been a challenging year for the beloved local business, McKie says closing permanently was never an option. "I wouldn't know what to do with myself if I didn't have Dressew. I always say there's never the same day twice here." By Thor Diakow

Dr. Sun Yat-Sen garden offering limited reopening later this month

O DAN TOULGOET

ne of Vancouver's most popular sights will be open once again in just a few days. Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden will be open to the public starting Saturday, April 24. To keep things safe they're selling timed tickets; tickets are available for slots from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in 30-minute intervals. "Our re-opening date is extra special because it also marks the 35th anniversary of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden," states the garden's management on Facebook. In honour of the anniversary, additional displays have been set up to show parts of the garden's

history. Along with the staggered entrance times, the garden's entrance has moved, there's a one-way route through the garden, and hand-sanitizer stations are being set up. "Before purchasing tickets, carefully review your event and ticket selection information. Dr Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden does not allow refunds for unclaimed or unused tickets," states the garden's website. The garden will be open Friday to Sunday each week; currently, tickets are available into June. By Brendan Kergin
