ultiple famous Canadians have come together with healthcare professionals to encourage people across the country to get

vaccinated. In the wake of soaring cases of coronavirus, healthcare professionals and famous Canadians are spreading the message that vaccines are safe. The ‘This Is Our Shot’ campaign launched last week was driven largely by groups that have been reaching out to and advocating for racialized communities bearing the brunt of the pandemic. The goal is to dispel myths and to answer questions in more than two dozen languages. The campaign underscores that COVID-19 may cause serious illness and death in people of all ages, not only older adults or people with chronic medical conditions. Beloved Vancouver actor Ryan Reynolds shared his support for the campaign on social media, rocking one of its trademark t-shirts. He quipped, "matching room not included." Burnaby's modern-day crooner Michael Bublé said he got "vaccinated because I want to protect myself, my family [and] all of the vulnerable folks out there." Canadian hockey star Hayley Wickenheiser

also encouraged people to get vaccinated, remarking that "this might be the only shot you don’t have to practice endlessly in the garage to attain!" "Dragon's Den" personality Arlene Dickinson, who is also taking part, added, "For me, it's about leveraging the docs and people who are on the front lines who understand the science and can answer legitimate questions that Canadians have. Vancouver emergency physician Dr. Navdeep Grewal, who works with a group providing culturally appropriate pandemic outreach to the South Asian community, said some concerns, such as whether vaccines were developed too quickly, cut across ethnic lines. Other worries are more specific. For example, are the shots religiously sanctioned? "They're wondering if it's vegetarian and, yes, the vaccines are all vegan, the ones that we have so far." Grewal suggested a small subset of the population is steadfastly against vaccines and tends to be the loudest. But most are at least thinking about getting a shot. "Those are the ones that we have the best opportunity of reaching with campaigns like this." By Elana Shepert with files from the Canadian Press

South Vancouver community collective‘s message is simple: take what you need, give what you can. A fully-stocked little free pantry, created by the Marpole Mutual Aid Network, is now located at the northwest corner of Marpole Park. The super small storeroom offers items such as non-perishable foods, diapers, and menstrual supplies. Residents and visitors are asked not to police or shame others who use the service. "Anyone can access, no questions asked, no surveillance. You take what you need and maybe sometimes you need a lot of things and sometimes you just need one thing," says the network's Amal Ishaque. Many contributions are welcome as long as they're not perishable or expired and they must be able to fit inside the pantry. The project is a culmination of a year's worth of work in establishing mutual aid efforts in the Marpole neighbourhood. As poverty and food insecurity continues to be an issue during the pandemic, little pantries and other grassroots community initiatives have recently become popular across North America. "We did it hoping to give something back to the community; but truthfully, it's been the other way. It's restored my faith in humanity in a very big way," explains the pantry's builder Erv Newcombe.

You can support B.C. parks by drinking alcohol

W

hat can be better than chilling on your patio while sipping on some beers? How about doing just that, while supporting a

good cause. The BC Parks Foundation has teamed up with BC Liquor Stores and some of B.C.’s most popular beverage brands to celebrate both organizations’ 100th anniversaries by offering a special pack of mixed beverage varieties, with sales supporting the province’s most cherished outdoor public spaces. Recently launched in over 68 liquor stores across the province, the exclusive ‘Parks Forever Pack’ will be available throughout the spring and summer until September 1. Retailing for $46.99, the specially-curated, mixed 24-pack contains a six-pack of each of the following #1 selling offerings from local breweries and beverage companies: • Whistler Brewing Co.‘s Grapefruit Ale • Hey Y’all!’s Original Hard Iced Tea • Lonetree‘s Authentic Dry Cider • PYUR’s Black Cherry Vodka Soda “Parks are at the heart of what makes B.C. beautiful, and support for parks has exploded over the past year,” says Andy Day, CEO of the BC Parks Foundation. “This is another great way that people can give back to the places we all love.” Responsible alcohol consumption is permitted while camping in most B.C. public parks. That said, The BC Parks Foundation is asking everyone to recognize and respect the current public health orders that prohibit travel and camping outside of your local areas. “For now the Parks Forever Pack will have to be enjoyed on

The colourfully designed pack contains messages reminding campers to pack responsibility by packing out and recycling their empties in the spirit of preserving and enhancing B.C.’s public parks. PNE at risk

he City of Vancouver says the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic threaten to shutter the long-running Pacific National Exhibition if the non-profit organization isn't able to secure emergency funding from the province. It says in a statement the 111-year-old exhibition stands to lose nearly $15 million after closures throughout the last year and it requires $8 million in aid. Mayor Kennedy Stewart says the city has been extending the PNE's "ever-growing line of credit" and it needs provincial support if it's going to continue hosting music, cultural, sports and other events each year. The exhibition's management says it would take more than 15 years to eliminate the forecasted deficit, jeopardizing the PNE's ability to organize events. Acting president Stacy Shields says the exhibition has survived two world wars and the Great Depression, but the challenges of COVID-19 have pushed it to the brink, putting thousands of jobs at risk. Andrew Leger, president of the CUPE local union that represents most PNE workers, says the annual fair is B.C.'s single-largest employer of youth. "For many, it's their first job — work that helps pay for their education, or even gets their family established in Canada," he says in the statement. By The Canadian Press

Architecture grad creates retro-style custom car posters

DOUGLAS PETERSON-HUI

DOUGLAS PETERSON-HUI

+

DOUGLAS PETERSON-HUI

H

e didn't intend to be drawing custom car posters for people around the world, but that's become Douglas Peterson-Hui's pandemic pivot. In May 2020 he graduated with a master's degree in architecture from Ryerson University in Toronto; shortly after he moved back to South Surrey, where he grew up. "My plan was to start working in the field of architecture," he tells Vancouver Is Awesome. "Perhaps looking at a job at one of the firms in Vancouver, or perhaps out of country." Like so many, the pandemic changed those plans and Peterson-Hui turned to his art, focusing on cars. They'd been an interest of his since he was a kid. "My dad, he's not a hardcore car enthusiast or anything, but he's kind of a Volvo enthusiast," he explains. Volvos have shown up a lot in his recent art. Peterson-Hui connects his interest in cars to his passion for architecture; he's interested in how things work and are put together. "I'm a huge fan of the simplicity of the vehicles, both in the shape and the mechanical components," he says, noting that there's a similar design language with buildings. Using apps like Adobe Illustrator he started creating drawings of cars using bold colours and stylized graphics with simple shapes.

He estimates he's done around 320 commissioned pieces in about a year. While most are digital posters people can print out themselves (which works well for art travelling far) he's also done a couple of beer labels for a brewery in England. Many, but not all, make it to his Instagram page at @thearchitectsgarage. Not everyone wants their images posted, or some don't fit the tone Peterson-Hui is going for. While his art is a burgeoning business, it's not his intention to focus on it forever. "I'd like this to be something I do on the weekends; I'd like to work as a licensed architect," he says.

Old travel posters were a source of inspiration for him, specifically the mid-century painted pieces. His love of architecture is integrated as well, as different structures show up in the background. Peterson-Hui says modern structures work well as a canvas for the cars. "I had actually started this art page as a way to share my own work with friends and family," he says of the Architect's Garage. However, others began to see it and follow. Its popularity began to grow and it's become a source of income for him as he's found digital art a great way to reach lots of people. And it's not just locals. He's had sales across Canada, the US and Europe.

Vancouver WAS Awesome

B

ack in 1907, preparing a site for construction required actual horsepower. The labourers and horses in this photograph are working on the building site for the Vancouver Law Courts, now home to the Vancouver Art Gallery. The tower of Wesley Methodist Church—built between 1900-1901—pokes out from behind a row of residential houses. These residential dwellings were demolished to make way for the construction of the third and current Hotel Vancouver in late 1928. A row of shops on the right side of the photograph obscure part of Christ Church Cathedral. Completed in 1895, it is the only building in this photograph that still stands. The large building that appears next to the Cathedral is the Glencoe Lodge. When this photograph was taken, it was recently purchased and opened by sugar baron B.T. Rogers. Bookstore offers help to neighbouring diner

W

hen Pulpfiction Books owner Chris Brayshaw noticed his neighbouring business needed help, he stepped in. The independent bookstore is located right beside The Wallflower diner on Vancouver's Main Street. The Wallflower had its outdoor patio extension denied by the city, due to major construction and parking protocols in the area. So, Brayshaw offered up some of his storefront space (which is technically private property) for two tables, giving the eatery a total of three dining spaces outside. While it may not seem like much, three tables make a big difference for a restaurant these days. "It's good to know that they are supporting other local independent businesses. You don't know what's going to make the difference between survival and not," explains Wallflower owner Eric Neilson. While Brayshaw is happy his own store is busy, he has a message for local residents: "Hospitality businesses need much more support currently than a bustling independent bookstore does." OPINION: Gluing posters to newspaper boxes is a boneheaded way to promote a climate protest

By Bob Kronbauer

BOB KRONBAUER

BOB KRONBAUER

T

o say I was upset to find out that Extinction Rebellion (XR) Vancouver organizers decided to glue posters to the fronts of some of our newspaper boxes last week would be an understatement. I was, and am, royally pissed off. The fact that we'll have to shell out to get their posters removed isn't what gets me; we pay fees to the City of Vancouver to allow us to keep our boxes in public spaces, and an item in our budget is reserved for a cleaning company that removes graffiti, stickers, etc, as they are regularly hit by vandals. What's ultimately got me worked up is that whoever adhered these posters to a number of street boxes (ours and others) decided they’re more important than any story that might be on the covers of the publications contained in them. Last week our cover story was that of Joe Buffalo, a man who survived residential school and went on to become a role model for Indigenous youth across Canada. We put him on the front page ahead of the 2021 DOXA Festival, so that people would see his face, read the story about the film about his life, then be inclined to watch it. Instead, people walking by our boxes saw a message saying their kids are going to die because of the climate crisis, and to bring a tent to participate in a protest. To be fair, our weekly paper gets printed in an edition of 112,000 copies. The majority get delivered directly to homes, and we put aside a few thousand to put into 63 street boxes. Our helping get Joe's story out there was derailed at a few boxes, putting a small dent in it. But it's the principal. So I reached out to XR with some questions, and they offered up the person who headed up the postering; Dónal, no last name given. I was told they do this because some in the group "don't always want to identify themselves as organizers due to police surveillance." Dónal told me they used wheat paste to apply the posters, and that we would be able to remove them "with warm water and dish soap." Unfortunately for Dónal and the other members of this climate action group, our contractors do not clean our boxes piecemeal, nor do they have time to follow up with every bonehead who might stick something onto one to ask for their advice on how they might best remove it. They remove things from our boxes using four different types of industrial solvents and chemicals, as is the industry standard. For jobs like this one where there's a lot to remove, they would have to apply quite a bit of those to each box. I'll admit the stuff is probably not great for the environment, and I can only hope that someone who is adhering things onto private property would consider the fact that the company which owns it might not have the budget to research the best way to remove each individual item, then send David Suzuki out with a bucket of warm water or whatever method the vandals feel would best suit their personal agenda. Dónal offered a non-apology, saying "some posters go up in places where they are not supposed to," and went on to say that "I'm aware someone will have to take them down but it's a small inconvenience compared to what the global south, the natural world and future generations will have to deal with if we don't halt emissions and ecological breakdown immediately." He then assured me that he will "ask others who are postering with me to not cover the glass on the front of your boxes in the future so that the important stories you have on your cover don't get missed." I have to thank him for that, on behalf of the future subjects—including Extinction Rebellion Vancouver— whose stories we will continue to tell, none more important than the next.

VANCOUVERISAWESOME.COM

LETTER: Your opinion piece in the April 29 edition of Vancouver is Awesome contained a number of factual errors, omissions, and exaggerated statements: 1. You report that coyotes are attacking humans in Stanley Park "with increasing frequency". In fact, 15 of the 17 reported incidents occurred in the months of December, January, and February. Since then there was one incident in March. two in early April (one of which involved a collision between coyotes and a scooter), and there have been none since. By any reasonable calculation that adds up to a decreasing frequency of unprovoked attacks. 2. While no one is exactly certain of why these incidents have been occurring, it is interesting that the above time frame coincides with the coyotes' mating season when male coyotes, pumped up on testosterone, tend to be more aggressive in defending their territories. You assert as fact a link between these biting incidents and humans feeding the coyotes, and of course feeding them is a very bad idea, but that link is purely speculative and there is actually no evidence linking this to increased aggression. 3. You fail to note that almost all of the biting victims were joggers. Additionally two were cyclists and only one was someone just walking. Every day there are hundreds of people who walk the seawall and the trails in Stanley Park and with that one exception, none of those have been bitten. Given those facts, your statement that "at this rate, it seems imminent that a child will be injured or killed" is pure fearmongering. There is zero evidence that Stanley Park coyotes pose

any threat to children or for that matter, to most adult users of the park. 4. "[C]oyotes have managed to officially take over Stanley Park. It's theirs now" Are you not a little bit ashamed to be encouraging a lynch mob mentality by making grossly hyperbolic appeals to tribalism like this?

I’m also puzzled by the statement in your report that tranquilizing coyotes with darts would present a public safety hazard, but apparently shooting them with live bullets does not!

5. You claim to be opposed to shooting the Stanley Park coyotes, but predict that sooner or later the public might demand that. It would have been more helpful if instead of feeding this potential hysteria, you had tried to educate the public that shooting coyotes would never be a permanent solution. Other coyotes would just take over the vacated territories and in no time we would be back to square one. Gerry Polman

Most people moved inside after Strathcona Park encampment shut down: city

T

he City ty of Vancouver says a tent encampment in Strathcona Park has come to a close as the majority ty of people who had been sleeping there have now moved into government-organized accommodations. An April 9 order by the city t 's park board set Friday morning as the deadline for campers to remove all tents and structures, which were set up after the Vancouver Port Authority t won a court injunction requiring them to leave nearby Crab Park. They previously camped at Oppenheimer Park, which was shut down by the B.C. government after nearly tw two years over fears of COVID-19 spreading. A statement from the city t says officials have worked with BC Housing to move 184 people into indoor accommodations, including some shelter spaces and private rooms in hotels purchased by the province. It says a small number of tents and temporary shelters remain in the park and officials are working with the remaining people on other options. A warming tent and hygiene facilities that had been installed in January were set to shut down on Friday. The east side of the park will be fenced off for cleanup, while the west side remains open for public use. Donnie Rosa, the park board's general manager, says the province will continue to provide indoor options for unsheltered residents. Board staff will monitor parks

Campers will be able to access their belongings throughout the weekend, with staff fencing off the area and controlling access in and out, she said. The eight-episode series will air on HBO in 2022 and "will explore the origins of the character that Cena will play in the upcoming film, a man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it." The American actor, who is also a professional wrestler, is married to Canadian engineer Shay Shariatzadeh; she studied at the University of British Columbia. Director James Gunn took to social media to share a picture of the actor walking down the street. He captioned: "What’s weird is that this is on John’s day off." In response, Cena reshared Gunn's Tweet and asked, "Why is that weird?" The Peacemaker star added that he was "just breaking in the uniform" and quipped that it is "quite difficult to shower in...but I manage." ave you ever wondered how much time you would save if you didn’t have to commute to work every day? With the coronavirus pandemic making working from home much more common over the past year, a recent study found Vancouverites have saved several weeks of time by not commuting. By looking into Canadian census data, a gambling-focused website found that the average Canadian has saved 12,073 minutes or 201.2 hours by not commuting over the last year. Vancouver is second only to Toronto in terms of time saved by not commuting via public transit or by personal vehicle. The study found that an average one-way commute costs Vancouver workers 27 minutes by car and 44 minutes on public transit. By not commuting by car Vancouverites saved 8.7 days over the last year and ex-transit users have saved 14.2 days. On a larger scale, the study looked at the 6.8 million workers who started working from home over the past year. Together they saved 1.3 billion hours or about 148,401 years' worth of time. In a recent release, OnlineGambling.ca says this saving of time is beneficial to employees in several areas. “In Canada, the number of commuters and journey times has been steadily rising over the last decade. There have also been numerous studies that have highlighted the negative health implications that commuting can have

on our health and wellbeing,” the release states. “Therefore, the move to remote working and saving one to two weeks of time which would have otherwise been spent on in the car or on a bus or train is perhaps one of the small silver linings to come out of the pandemic.” On the flip side though, this loss of commute time has caused people a negative impact on their work-life balance. “Even though they have managed to claim back some time, working from home means no distinct separation between home and work life,” the study states. This has given way to people taking a “fake commute” where people head out before and after work on a walk, drive or cycle to give them a clear start

and end to their workday and help with their mental health. With that in mind, the federal government is looking into creating safe labour protections for those working at home. Filomena Tassi, the Labour Minister is asking Canadians to share their new realities of what it means to work, including thoughts on the "right to disconnect." Results were determined by calculating how many days the average Canadian works on the basis that a typical fulltime employee works Monday-Friday. Public holidays, sick days and vacation days were factored in. Then commute and travel census data (1/2) was used to calculate average commute times for cities across Canada. By Cameron Thomson

10 things we wish were still around from Expo 86

I

t's been 35 years since Expo 86 opened in Vancouver, and while some things have stuck around over three and a half decades, most disappeared shortly after the gates closed. Luckily, people took lots of photos, and some of them contributed to the Vancouver Public Library's This Vancouver archive 'Expo Retro' in 2018. What follows is a selection of items we wish were still standing, or happening, in Vancouver.

4. The McBarge It's fast food on a slow-moving boat. Why did it ever leave?

It may seem a bit cartoonish and bizarre, but that's what's so great about it. To really put a spin on it, maybe they work as a team/democracy for each move, voting on which pawn will get sacrificed.

2. The Wooden Elephant While it'd be nice to think society has learned from the story of the Trojan Horse, this wooden elephant would definitely be the downfall of the city if it was dragged into the city's core behind the formidable walls, but luckily those don't exist. Instead, there are high housing prices.

6. The H2O UFO DR. JOHN GLUCKMAN/VPL

An early water park, this was set up in the Ontario Pavilion which is roughly where Creekside Park is, which is lacking any sort of retro hydro-entertainment, never mind alien versions.

3. The Flotilla of Ships

GERALD JOE/VPL

TERRY BOGYO/VPL

Vancouver doesn't have a naval yard, leaving the city shockingly open to pirate raids. To stem this, these ships from the Marine Plaza should be rounded up and brought back to defend the region from Captain Jack Sparrow impersonators. To be honest they may not be as effective against modern-day pirates.

7. The garbage can performances Garbos would leap forth from his garbage can/entertainment venue to perform for everyone, and probably make some passerby who tossed a half-empty cup of coffee into his stage feel pretty rotten. Imagine walking through Kitsilano only to have a garbage can man start juggling at you? And now imagine that happening when you're sober.

O

ne of Vancouver's crown jewels is getting a big boost to help ensure a healthy future. Stanley Park is now part of a first-of-its-kind network of greenspaces across the country. The Cornerstone Parks initiative was created by national nonprofit Park People in order to revitalize Canada’s largest urban parks. The partnership also includes High Park in Toronto and Montreal's Mount Royal. According to Parks People, "Large urban greenspaces house valuable ecosystems that are critical to biodiversity and mitigate climate change. Many do not realize their critical role in absorbing carbon, and increasing ecological and social resilience. Specific to this moment, 82% of Canadians said parks have been more important to their mental health during COVID-19." The program comes with federal funding that will help the Stanley Park Ecology Society remove 10,000 square metres of invasive species and plant 500 native trees and shrubs. By Thor Diakow

his Emergency Preparedness Week, St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon is pushing all British Columbians to take three simple steps to become prepared for any and all emergencies. Emergency Preparedness Week is May 2 to 8, a time for everyone to reflect on how prepared they are for the risks in their area. Here in British Columbia, we face a variety of risks whether it’s earthquakes, wildfires, floods, storms, and more. Despite this, only 46 per cent of B.C. residents said they have an emergency kit, and only 39 per cent have prepared a plan, according to a 2019 survey done by Research Co. “If someone wants to become better prepared for emergencies, we always recommend these three steps: make a plan, purchase or build an emergency preparedness kit, and get first aid trained,” said Christopher Chan, learning and development officer and first aid instructor with

St. John Ambulance BC & Yukon. “With those three steps in place, you will gain an increased confidence to be able to protect yourself as well as your loved ones in the event of an emergency that may keep you trapped in your home or force you to evacuate.” An emergency preparedness should include details such as dealing with potential hazards inside and outside your home, safe exits from your home, a meeting place for your household, out-of-town emergency contact information, pet care, and more. An emergency kit should be built to keep you safe for a minimum of 72 hours with supplies like food, water, a first aid kit, a wind-up or

battery powered flashlight, a radio, and more. It’s important to also personalize the kit with items like prescription medications, solar cellphone charger, family documents, change of clothing, pet supplies, cash, and more. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s also important to keep masks and hand sanitizer in mind. Having first aid training is essential for everyone. With first aid training, you will gain the knowledge to properly use the tools in an emergency kit and feel more confident to take action in the event that someone is injured during an emergency - or during everyday life. First aid training classes teaches the crucial skills of CPR and AED use and how to treat injuries such as burns, sprains, cuts, head trauma, and severe bleeding. Celebration of Light fireworks cancelled again, to return in 2022 taking place in 2021. “We understand the impact this decision will have on participating teams, the musicians and performers, our exhibitors, partners, sponsors and guests, but it’s simply not feasible this year to deliver the event in a safe manner,” said Michael McKnight, co-chair of the festival society, in a media release. However, the Celebration of Light has set the dates for its 30th season the following year and will take

place July 23, 27, and 30, 2022. Organizers say the "event will return bigger than ever" next year. The 2020 Honda Celebration of Light was also cancelled due to the pandemic. "To the people of British Columbia, we urge you to stay safe and healthy, and we look forward to uniting with you and looking skyward together in 2022," add organizers.
