he end of an NHL season is tough on teams that are not going to make the playoffs. NHL players are competitive by nature — it’s hard to even make the NHL if you’re not — and want to win every game, but it can be difficult to find the motivation when the playoffs are no longer a possibility. It’s a little bit easier for rebuilding teams that enter the season with low expectations, but even the worst teams are able to manufacture some optimism and belief in their group to start the year. For a team like the Canucks coming off an emotional playoff run in 2020, the death march at the end of this current season has to be particularly frustrating. They entered the season not just believing that they would make the playoffs but believing they could be one of the best teams in the all-Canadian North Division. “We know we have a great hockey team in here,” said Bo Horvat before the start of the season. When asked about people predicting they’d miss the playoffs, he said, “It fuels my fire, for sure, when you see or hear things like that. I think it should just motivate us to be better and prove people wrong again.” Instead of proving everyone wrong, everything went wrong, both on and off the ice. Now the Canucks are playing out the remainder of the schedule knowing that their season is over once it ends. The worst part is that the Canucks will be playing after the start of the NHL playoffs, just not the way they had hoped. Because of their COVID-19 outbreak, a total of 11 games were postponed and rescheduled, forcing the Canucks to play a grueling 19 games in 31 days. Their delayed schedule takes the Canucks all the way to May 19, when the rest of the NHL will already be done with their regular season schedule. The Central Division finished on Monday, May 10. The East played their last game on May 11. The West wraps up on Thursday, May 13. As for the North, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnipeg Jets will finish their season

on Friday, May 14, then all that’s left is the Canucks and their opponents: the Edmonton Oilers on May 15 and the Calgary Flames on May 16, 18, and 19. Those last four games were announced with no set time — just TBD for “To Be Determined.” While there was speculation those games might be canceled altogether, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed last week that those games will be played: “I don’t expect any to get scrubbed,” he said to Postmedia’s Patrick Johnston. Instead, the “to be determined” start times are likely to be flexible to work around the playoff schedules of the rest of the league. Not only will the Canucks be playing out their schedule knowing the games are essentially meaningless, they’ll be doing it while their peers are experiencing the exhilaration of playoff hockey. “I think there is [a mental challenge],” said Canucks head coach Travis Green. “I think it’s probably more for the veteran guys, the guys that have played in the league a long time. They all want to play in the playoffs and when you get to that point where you know you’re not, it is difficult. “You want to play in the playoffs and those last games, when they’re starting playoffs, it will be different for our guys.” Forcing the Canucks to play those meaningless games while the rest of the league plays their most meaningful games of the year feels like adding insult to injury. ould you welcome back the Olympics, 20 years after we hosted the Winter Games? Turns out a majority of British Columbians, albeit by a slim margin, support the idea of Vancouver making a bid for the 2030 event. A new poll from Insights West finds 55 per cent of people support the idea, which also has the backing of John Furlong, President and CEO of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC). Not surprisingly, poll participants embrace the VANOC idea of the Olympics returning a bit more if they don't have to foot the bill. Seventy-seven per cent of respondents support a bid if no public funding is necessary. It also seems, regardless of support for the Games, B.C. residents feel another Olympics would bring economic and social benefits to the province. According to Insights West, "A large majority believe hosting the games would create valuable jobs (83%), provide a postCOVID-19 boost to tourism (80%), provide excitement about something to look forward to (78%), provide a boost to the economy (76%), and result in infrastructure that would be used for years to come (76%)." V.I.A. spent some time this week in the Olympic Village asking people what they think. You can watch a video of their responses and leave a comment of your own at www.bit.ly/vancouver2030. his photo of Alvin Kanak’s Inukshuk at English Bay was shot by a local photographer who goes by the handle @hikesnadbeyond.
A fun fact about the sculpture is that it was commissioned by the Government of the Northwest Territories so they could have it on display at their pavilion at Expo 86, and they
wound up gifting it to the City of Vancouver. It has been on display in this spot since 1987. t's a treasure trove of vintage clothing just waiting to be discovered. Nestled in East Vancouver's Kingsgate Mall is Stoxx Vintage, a family-run store specializing in all things old school. Over the years, the mall itself has gained a reputation that precedes itself but for now, we'll focus on one of its denim-stocked denizens. Tricia Hill, the store's co-owner, confirms it's one unique shopping destination. "We have a lot of activity going on daily in the mall, some good, some bad; there's a lot of love." Stoxx opened in Kingsgate six months before COVID-19 began making headlines, so it's been an uphill battle from the start. Like so many local retailers, Hill has had to adjust to running the business during
a pandemic. "At first it was devastating of course, like everyone else, but we took to social media and we engage with our customers," says Hill. The store itself has recently become popular in the community, thanks mainly to a snazzy Instagram account (@stoxxvintage) that showcases its wonderful wardrobes, and one adorable and charismatic son named Aiden who doubles as a sort of spokesperson for the store, and a television actor in shows such as Arrow. For now, sales are steady at Stoxx and the family remains grateful for all its supportive and loyal customers. "We were welcomed in the Mount Pleasant area and we really greatly appreciate it." People once lined up to buy Shaughnessy real estate for under a thousand bucks neighbourhood that didn't yet exist. The Shaughnessy Heights development was touted as "The [future] Nob Hill of Vancouver" in an April 26, 1907 ad in the Vancouver Daily World newspaper. Empty lots were offered up for sale, marketed as being "either good for the investor or the speculator," and you could pick up three of them for a total of $3,700. The promise was that if you didn't want to build on them, you'd be able to sell them back in three months, and get a $600 return on your investment. And there were even lower prices for lots in the area at the time; opportunists scooped up land "very close" to the development, one marketing theirs in newspaper
advertisements as being for "Mr. Man of Modest Means". The ads were meant to appeal to those wanting to be slightly removed from what was then a heavily industrialized False Creek, proclaiming that "This property commands a grand view of the whole city and bay. The air is pure. You are away from the fog and smoke." The price tag on these fogless lots for the man of modest means? $375. You could pay $100 in cash up front and the rest in installments over 1 and 1/2 years. And, unlike your iPhone, the lots wouldn't become obsolete in two years’ time.

or as long as Vancouver has been incorporated, people have been inclined to line up for one thing or another. The 1980s saw people beginning to line up for generous portions of Greek food at Stepho's on Davie, the 1990s saw people lining up to put down a deposit on thencheap condos, the 2000s saw brunch lineups start to take off, and the 2010s saw people waiting together to get their hands on the latest iPhone. This month it's vaccination pop-ups in the suburbs. Long before all of that, the C.P.R. had people lining up on both sides of the street to purchase property in Shaughnessy, a

black bear was spotted wandering into the city last week, with one photographer capturing a video of the lumbering bruin. The Vancouver Police Department says officers helped track the black bear after it was spotted near the PNE on Thursday, May 5. "The bear wandered down to the train tracks around Heatley and Powell Streets before being tranquilized by conservation officers," states VPD spokesperson Cst. Tania Visintin. The bear was transported to a location in the seato-sky area, according to Ministry of Environment spokesperson David Karn. Photographer Craig Minielly spotted the bear as it passed by his studio in Gastown. By Brendan Kergin

Opinion: The PNE is drowning in debt and needs a B.C. bailout
T
PNE/PLAYLAND
he B.C. government should begin explaining soon how it defines “anchor attractions” when it comes to qualifying for a new $100-million fund to assist the tourism sector in economic recovery. There are likely few people waiting more anxiously for this clarification than those who run the Pacific National Exhibition. To no one’s surprise, for the second straight year the COVID-19 pandemic has caused the cancellation of the PNE fair. With no fair and no other events being held in the various facilities at its location, the PNE has lost almost all revenue streams and piled up $8 million in debt. It fears the debt could rise to $15 million by the end of this year. This situation should put considerable pressure on the NDP government to provide the financial assistance being requested of it. The PNE is located in east Vancouver, which is ground zero when it comes to NDP support. The PNE directly employs 4,200 people and its managers say it creates a further 9,500 indirect jobs and generates about $200 million in economic activity (in non-pandemic years). The vast majority of its employees are young people and many are members of CUPE. I used to have one of those indirect jobs, having spent 10 summers as a teenager and young adult running various carnival games on the PNE midway.
So, yes, you can call me a fan of the PNE. That sentiment aside, I am betting the case can be made that the PNE should be considered an “anchor attraction” in this province. More than one million people (many of them “tourists” from other B.C. towns) annually attend the fair and other events – concerts, sporting events etc. – held on the grounds. Nothing like it, in terms of size, exists anywhere else in the province. Sure, there are other large fairs – the Cloverdale Rodeo and the Williams Lake Stampede, to name two – but nothing meets the scale and economic impact of the PNE.
So far, Tourism Minister Melanie Mark has been coy in her response to PNE’s plea, saying she would “have more to say in the coming days.” She has noted the City of Vancouver – which owns the PNE but which does not fund it – has received various forms of financial assistance from the provincial government throughout the pandemic, which may suggest this may not be a slam-dunk case for the PNE qualifying for the funding. I detected a less-than-sympathetic ear from a number of NDP cabinet ministers when it came to Vancouver Mayor Kennedy Stewart’s demands for financial help from the provincial government in the early days of the pandemic. The government did, however, eventually provide some help. Let’s hope that happens in this case. It would be a shame to see the PNE denied the financial help it so desperately needs and to watch it perhaps drift towards permanent closure because of escalating debt levels. The NDP government earmarked $6 billion in pandemic-tied economic relief in this year’s budget. Surely, the 111-year-old PNE can make the case it deserves a comparatively tiny portion of that life-saving funding. Anchor attraction indeed. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC

brand-new album produced by a Vancouver band serves as the culmination of three years of work, the hours of many creative minds, and a triumph over depression. Kathryn Sutherland is the lead singer for the band Blue Dirt Girl, formed in 2015 with long-time collaborators and fellow East Vancouver musicians Albert Klassen and Jason Overy. In 2016 they dropped their first album Crazy Beautiful containing songs driven by smooth grooves, jazzy instrumentation, a hint of soul and lead mostly by Sutherland’s vocals. The band’s most recent EP Nothing is as it was dropped last March and features an almost entirely new sound. The saxophones, hand drums, and calypso rhythms of Crazy Beautiful were replaced by steady rock grooves, dirtier guitar solos, and a general nod to Sutherland’s most formative musical decades: the 70s and 80s. "I knew I wanted something different and I'm in love with my wah peddle and d my wh hammy [bar]],"" Suttherlland d said in a recent interview with Vancouver Is Awesome. The album derives its title from a lyric from the EP’s second track, I Don’t Mind. Sutherland says she wrote the lyrics “nothing is as it was” for the tune
after coming out of a depressive period in 2019. In August of 2020, the EP’s four songs were recorded with an extra member, Grade 11 student Max Evans who Sutherland described as a “60-yearold pro lead guitarist locked in a 17-year-old’s body.” "I knew magic was happening,” Sutherland said of the recording experience. “It was three days and it was 32 degrees and we had no air conditioner and it was just magic." Other artists who brought the EP to life included Kiki Yee, an East Vancouver artist who created original sketches for the album’s cover and singles. Josh K lassen from Vancouver Islland d was also commissioned to create four reaction painting videos for each of the EP’s tracks. Four more young Canadian artists were also involved in creating music videos for each song. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, KIKI LEE

know you were in the same city even though most of the buildings are still there." More recently he has shown a special interest in ghost signs, essentially any old handpainted advertising that has been preserved on a building for a long time. Farfan says these signs are much more rare in Vancouver than in other American cities, which he believes is in part due to Vancouver’s wet climate. That’s why Farfan’s recent photographs of the century-old, ghost sign recently uncovered on East Hastings and Penticton Streets for the former Shelly’s 4x Bread are so special.

50 parking stalls axed for separated bike path at Kits Beach
A
s of May 10, there is a new separated bike path through the parking lot at the intersection of Arbutus Street and Cornwall Avenue. The change is part of the Vancouver Park Board's goal to make Kitsilano Beach Park safer for cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles. "The move is expected to reduce conflict in the south parking lot, which is busy with people walking, rolling, cycling, and driving," states the board in a press release. To make space for the cyclists 50 stalls have been closed in the parking lot, near the tennis courts. Around 200 remain. Additionally, at the Balsam Street end of things, the dirt path cutting diagonally will be upgraded; this will divert people from the Balsam Street and Cornwall Avenue intersection. Traffic increased last year in the area, with the
city recording 500,000 cycling journeys in the area in 2019. Last year it jumped to 750,000 trips. A permanent solution to the conflict will be in place in a couple of years with a separated bike path connecting Balsam Street and Ogden Avenue. "Park Board and City of Vancouver Engineering staff will seek public input on a fully separated cycling path connecting Ogden Avenue to Balsam Street beginning in summer 2021," the board states in the release. Engagement sessions on the issue began in 2013. Recommendations from staff are expected in early 2022. A full Kitsilano Beach Park master plan is anticipated to begin in the next few years. Open letter to the Premier and Minister of Health of British Columbia, the Honourable John Horgan and Adrian Dix, and the Provincial Health Officer of British Columbia, Dr. Bonnie Henry.. We need your help!
From Concerned British Columbia Cancer Patients and their Patient Group representatives
Urgent changes needed. For COVID-19 vaccines to provide the best protection against the virus for cancer patients, the COVID-19 vaccine rollout across Canada MUST CHANGE URGENTLY. As cancer patients, family members and oncology patient group representatives, we call upon the government of British Columbia to rollout the COVID-19 vaccines to cancer patients in the province according to best clinical trial evidence and the advice of their doctors. That means receiving the first and second doses of the available COVID-19 within 21 – 28 days. Findings from recent studies show that the immune response that occurs after the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in seniors1 and cancer patients2 is reduced compared to the response in healthy individuals, leaving these individuals vulnerable without their second dose. Waiting up to four months between first and second doses leaves cancer patients at greater risk of inadequate defence against COVID-19. Cancer Patients Are Asking ALL LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT TO HELP! It is imperative that changes be made. The present rollout recommendations and practices of up to 4 months between the first and second doses have the potential to put the lives of cancer patients in jeopardy.
Up to 4 weeks between vaccine doses for cancer patients, NOT 4 months. #4weeksnot4months British Columbia Government Including Local Administrators: Ensure that the roll-out of the COVID-19 vaccines for cancer patients for the first and second doses is within 21 – 28 days of each other. Ensure adequate directives and resources are provided to achieve this goal. Follow the lead of other provinces that have taken steps to ensure cancer patients receive their COVID-19 vaccines following appropriate dosing schedules.
AB, MB, ON and QC have made changes. Why not BC? Provincial and Territorial Governments Including Local Administrators: We continue to ask the Federal Government to revise the National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommendation for cancer patients to receive the 2 doses of the vaccines within 21 -28 days of each other, as approved by Health Canada.

COVID-19: Second vaccine dose delays leave many cancer patients unprotected, say advocates By Adina Bresge, The Canadian Press This week, patients and advocates mounted a national campaign to prioritize people with cancer by adhering to the manufacturer’s schedule. In the case of Pfizer, that’s a three-week delay, while Moderna dictates a four-week gap between doses, and Oxford-AstraZeneca recommends waiting between four to 12 weeks for a second shot. Medical experts say emerging research suggests many cancer patients have a reduced immune response to the vaccine, so a single COVID-19 shot may leave them insufficiently protected. “We’re not asking for special treatment. We’re just asking for equality,” said Martinson, 37. “In order for us to get the same efficacy as everyone else with one vaccine, unfortunately, we do need two vaccines.” There are patients like her in many parts of the country, say advocates, who are calling for a national policy to exempt people with cancer from extended dose delays. Earlier this month, the National Advisory Committee on Immunization affirmed its recommendation that a second dose be delayed as long as four months in order to offer more people a first dose faster. NACI left it to provinces and territories to decide if exemptions should be made for highrisk groups. Some provinces, such as Ontario and Alberta, chose to prioritize some people with weakened immune systems, including certain cancer patients. But elsewhere, including British Columbia and Quebec, the four-month interval applies across the board. The president of the Canadian Association of Pharmacy in Oncology says the patchwork of policies leaves many patients in the lurch. Even in jurisdictions that permit earlier doses for cancer patients, confusion reigns, says Tina Crosbie. “If we have something on a national level, then that will help for that trickle-down effect to be able to implement it and roll it out in the various health units,” said Crosbie. Dr. Keith Stewart, director of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre in Toronto, says people with cancer often have weakened immune systems, both because of the disease itself and the treatments for it. Blood cancers, in particular, often impair the immune system. Solid tumors, such as those in colon cancer or lung cancer, are often treated with therapies that destroy cancer cells, but can also damage the healthy cells involved in the body’s immune response. COVID-19 vaccines trigger the body’s immune response to produce antibodies that help fight off infection. But in cancer patients, that response will be diminished, says Stewart. “Not enough cancer patients response to the first dose to be comfortable leaving them without the second,” he said. “Even with the second dose, protection will be suboptimal. But any protection is better than none.” Researchers in London published a paper
Elya Martinson of Kelowna, B.C., shown in this handout image, has stage 4 lung cancer. She says her second vaccine shot will be delayed four months. The Canadian Press / Vibrant Okanagan Photography in the Lancet this week suggesting a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine leaves many cancer patients partially or mostly unprotected, based on data collected from 151 cancer patients and 54 healthy controls. Three weeks after receiving one shot of Pfizer, the study found an immune response in 38 per cent of people with solid cancer, and 18 per cent of patients with blood cancer. That’s compared to 94 per cent of those without cancer. However, immunity response improved in patients with solid cancer who received a boost 21 days after their first shot. A Health Canada spokesman says there’s little data on the issue because cancer patients were excluded from clinical trials. And early data suggesting a reduced immune response in some cancer patients does not necessarily indicate the level of real-world protection they’d have against COVID-19, Eric Morrissette said on Wednesday in an email. NACI will continue to monitor the evidence about the effectiveness of vaccines in high-risk groups and adjust its recommendations if needed, he added. On Wednesday, a coalition of cancer advocacy groups published an open letter in the Globe and Mail calling on all levels of government to ensure Canadians with cancer aren’t put at risk because of a delayed dose. The executive director of Myeloma Canada, which was one of more than a dozen signatories of the letter, says anxiety over second doses has prompted some cancer patients to delay treatments that may impact the effectiveness of the vaccine. “Because of COVID, many cancer patients have had their diagnosis or treatment delayed, which is a very stressful experience,” said Martine Elias. “Now, we are creating even more uncertainty for them by delaying their second vaccination dose.”

t's a big "boom" that can be heard every evening across Coal Harbour and beyond. After over a century, Vancouver's famed 9 o'clock gun still fires each night at 9:00 p.m. in Stanley Park. There was, however, a temporary firing time adjustment to 7:00 p.m. last spring, in solidarity with the nightly local healthcare worker cheers. Many may not realize it but the cannon is actually manually reloaded every day. For over 10 years, Vancouver Park Board employee Trent Furlong has been one of the people responsible for keeping the historic gun running smoothly. He takes care of it five days a week, rain or shine. To ensure proper precautions are taken, all workers who tend to the cannon must complete a federally regulated safety course and obtain a pyrotechnician ticket, which is renewed every five years. Known as the 'powder master', Furlong's daily duties include packing it with one and a half pounds of black gunpowder (from a supplier on Vancouver Island) and carefully placing an electric match, which is ignited each night, in the powder with a bamboo skewer wrapped in wire. When he's not on ammunition duty, Furlong can be seen sprucing up the greenery in Stanley Park and English Bay. There have been several occasions over the

years when the gun didn't fire. "Sometimes you get a bad electric match or sometimes we've had problems with the electrical terminals or just power outages that happen out here," says Furlong. The caretaker is always happy to speak with curious onlookers and enjoys having an active role in preserving one of the city's longest traditions. Installed at Brockton Point in 1894, the cannon was originally a navigational aid for ships to set their chronometers while in the harbour. In 1954 it was moved to its present location further south on the seawall. By Thor Diakow

EVERY TICKET CHANGES A LIFE
BC’s Hometown Heroes come to the aid of people in life-threatening situations every day. From rescue to recovery, BC’s front line workers and first responders – our fire fighters, along with the doctors, nurses and health care teams at Vancouver General Hospital – are always on duty for critically ill and severely injured British Columbians. When you need help, these heroes respond. Our health care heroes are fighting COVID-19 at VGH. Now, more than ever, our heroes need your support. Your Hometown Heroes Lottery ticket purchases support VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, raising essential funds for specialized adult health services and research at VGH and UBC Hospital, GF Strong Rehab Centre, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute and Vancouver Community Health Services for all British Columbians. Ticket purchases also support programs of the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, including burn survivor support services and resiliency programs for fire fighters.
Thank you for purchasing your Hometown Heroes Lottery tickets.
