A&B Sound hoody throws it back to the 90s
V
.I.A. is excited to announce that we've produced some throwback A&B Sound hooded sweatshirts, on the heels of the t-shirt we released. Proudly printed in East Van, this is the latest in a series of nostalgic garments we're making available including Beaver Lumber, Carlos N' Buds, and Luvafair t-shirts, and many others. A&B Sound was an institution for decades and had a huge presence in Vancouver in the 90s. If you enjoyed music you no doubt bought CDs from them, and there's no way you could have avoided the hype around their legendary Boxing Day sales. At one time viewed as too big to fail, the company went bankrupt in 2008. Some blame it on the rise of digital downloads and streaming services, and the business not being able to adapt. This sweatshirt is now available for purchase at bcisawesome.com

ans of the small-wheeled sports have their chance to tell the municipal government exactly what they think of the city. The city is developing what it calls Vancouver CitySkate: a long-term strategy guiding future decisions around facilities for skateboarding and other small-wheeled sports. The parks board is looking for public feedback right now on how to create a "network of skateboarding facilities" for current and future residents. On May 13 a survey opened to the public, so people can share their thoughts on what needs to happen. It'll be open until mid June. “When skate amenities are planned and designed with strong community input, they not only become beloved destinations for local youth but celebrated public spaces for everyone to enjoy," states the city on their website. The survey includes a map so people can share their favourite spots. This is the first phase of public engagement; after the city plans to set up some pop-up spots over the summer (they'll be some short term skate features set up in parks and public spaces citywide). It's not just for people on wheeled boards. "A skateboard amenity is a purpose-built recreational environment made for skateboarding, BMX, scooter, roller skates, and other small wheeled sports to utilize," states the city online. No word if Hot Wheels strapped to a pair of old sneakers counts. The plan to make a plan was approved in 2017. Learn more and provide your input at shapeyourcity.ca. COV

ranville Island is one of Vancouver's prized attractions, beloved by locals and visitors alike. Known for its public market, artist's studios, shops, and plenty of nautical charm, there isn't much more that could make a visit to the destination any more fun. Except maybe if it had its own ferris wheel. Last week, Vancouverites got a glimpse of what a ferris wheel - and a whole little carnival - might look like at Granville Island, except it turned out to be just a little small screen magic. "Sorry kids, it's just a TV set," tweeted Granville Island's official Twitter account. Specifically, the carnival and ferris wheel were set up for the show Charmed, the 2018 WB network reboot of the original, which ran from 1998 to 2006. The updated Charmed "follows the lives of three sisters— Macy (Madeleine Mantock), Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Maggie (Sarah Jeffery)—

non-profit group that launched at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in Vancouver is behind a new fundraising initiative that puts the spotlight on the city's hardhit restaurants and food businesses. Breaking Bread, which began in March 2020 as an online hub for independent Vancouver restaurants to promote their offerings as public health restrictions forced dining rooms to close down, has launched "Behind the Plexi," a photography fundraiser that is raising money to support hospitality industry workers. "Behind the Plexi" showcases 33 Vancouver restaurants as captured through the lenses of four of the city's prominent photographers: Wade Comer (@wadecomerphoto), Miranda Hudson (@ hudsonny), William Luk (@ mayowill) and Luis Valdizon (@whentheyfindus). The four photogs generously donated their talents to the project, which is the result of a collaboration between Breaking Bread and Vancouver restaurateur Brad Roark of Nook and Oddfish. Roark was inspired by a similar venture done in Toronto called

Chinatown Memorial Square is located in the heart of Vancouver’s Chinatown on the corner of Keefer and Columbia Streets. This valued public space hosts important community events such as the Remembrance Day ceremony, and draws many visitors to the neighbourhood where they can learn about the contributions of Chinese people in Canada. It also provides a space for community members to honour their culture and traditions. This project is an important part of Chinatown’s living heritage. We want to improve Chinatown Memorial Square as an accessible public space, while developing a design that enhances its culture and history. Please share your ideas with us, and encourage your friends and family to do so too. Your responses will guide the development of values and a vision that will steer the plaza redesign. public display in Mount Pleasant is asking residents to celebrate the little things. The sign reads, "What are the little things/treats that get you through these days?" Passersby are encouraged to share them on a piece of paper shaped like a butterfly or flower; supplies are provided in a small mailbox. The interactive initiative seems rather popular, as the stationery needed restocking when V.I.A. paid a visit. The messages range from heartfelt to hilarious. Some touching examples are "Anytime I can sneak a hug in," "My beautiful girlfriend, Vanessa" and "My stuffy,

OAKLAND ATHLETICS
t was announced last week that the Oakland Athletics baseball team is going to "begin to explore other markets," as the MLB league and the team seem to have reached a stalemate with the City of Oakland over plans to build a new stadium. A's president Dave Kaval issued a letter to fans, noting that they've been working on a plan for a new stadium for the past four years, and that if it were constructed it would "set the stage for more World Series titles for our fans." "A new ballpark is needed for the A's continued success," he said, and the MLB agreed; they issued their own statement, distributed by the club's social media accounts. The MLB statement expressed that they're "concerned with the state of progress" of their stadium proposal and that they've taken the step of instructing the team to start exploring a move elsewhere. In the past, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has floated the idea of Vancouver being a potential city for an MLB team to land in, and to that I say hells to the yeah, sir. Baseball as a spectator sport has a long tradition in Vancouver, with a
loyal fan base. From the Vancouver Beavers (1908-1922), to the Vancouver Asahi (1914-1941) to the present-day Vancouver Canadians franchise (which I—and many others—have called "the best game in town") this city has always loved baseball. And, as coincidence may have it, we once had a baseball stadium called Athletic Park, located at 5th and Hemlock, near Granville Island. It opened in 1913 and shut down in 1951. As the A's begin looking for a new
home, they would be wise to consider Vancouver, and to ignite a conversation around building a new Athletic Park. If and when those conversations begin, our City Council and Mayor will hopefully play nicer than Oakland's elected officials seem to have done.

ikayla Hong is the epitome of science coexisting with art. She is completing her master's in bioengineering after obtaining a degree in chemical engineering at UBC. She is also a biomedical engineering intern at Vancouver General Hospital. On top of all that, Hong has become a seasoned self-taught artist who paints recreations of iconic Vancouver storefronts, shops, and various other historic local businesses. "I mainly use watercolour paints and ink. I'll use alcoholbased markers and just some pen and then sometimes, depending on the piece, I'll do a little bit of digital art on top of it, to do some of those really fine details," explains Hong. There is also a philanthropic element to her work; a portion of profits from each sale goes to the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre. In addition, Hong organizes a separate week-long 'friendraiser' each month, with some proceeds benefitting another local charity connected to a specific art piece. The artist remains overwhelmed with the positive support in the community. "Growing up, I have so many good memories from my parents taking me out to different parts of Vancouver. I'm so lucky, being able to share what's so special about Vancouver and to trigger those happy memories in other people has been really special." To see more find her work at artbedo.com. Snowbirds to fly over Vancouver
T
he 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, better known as the Snowbirds, will be taking to the skies over Canadian cities once again this year. They'll be over Vancouver and the Lower Mainland three times with all dates happening in July and August. The first will be a nonaerobatic display over Vancouver on Friday, July 16. It replaces a previously
scheduled flight over Boundary Bay that was set for July 17. A couple of days later, on Sunday, July 18, they'll be doing an aerobatic display over White Rock. Then, they'll return to the region for the Abbotsford International Airshow from August 6 to 8. Currently, those are the only three appearances they have in B.C. There's only one other event
SECURITY PLUS FLEXIBILITY
in western Canada; they'll be performing over Calgary July 24 and 25. In total, the Snowbirds have 19 dates with the majority in eastern Canada and a handful in the U.S. In a tweet, the team notes things still could change depending on the pandemic. The team has been training on Vancouver Island recently, following last year's deadly crash in Kamloops.

Check it out, Dude: 'Stump Chilling Park'
THOR DIAKOW
Y
ou've heard of Dude Chilling Park, but what about Stump Chilling Park? Sure, the sign is a lot smaller and it isn't technically a park but this tiny display is still stealing hearts in Mount Pleasant. It was created by local artist and former costume designer Thyrza Segal. She thought a broken stump resembled the sculpture in Vancouver's famed Dude Chilling Park (technically Guelph Park) and decided to make her own neighbourhood nod to the popular landmark. Many local residents say it brings a lot of joy to an already welcoming area. In case someone feels like plucking it for themselves, Segal assures people it's easy to replace.
"It's just a laser print that has been laminated, no biggie. I can print more," writes Segal. The miniature park can be viewed near East 10th Avenue and Carolina Street. Just remember to respect the setup and leave it for everyone to enjoy. By Thor Diakow
Real estate flipping helps fund green energy company
I
nventor Charles Haynes was inspired to start a wave-based energy company off of the money he made flipping apartment buildings over 25 years in Vancouver. "I thought 'well I'll just make one, can't be that hard,'" Haynes joked in an interview with Vancouver Is Awesome. 11 years ago he designed and fabricated several prototype wave engines, ultimately erecting a testing rig in 2018 just 800 meters off Wreck Beach. Previous designs included a large metal arm that would bob up and down in the waves to generate electricity, but the arm broke in 2019 and sent Haynes back to the drawing board. In 2020 he had a new design and added the Vancouver wave energy test station next to the new and
improved engine so others could verify the amount of electrical current made by the engine. In the barest description possible, Haynes' newest wave engine looks like a “doughnut on a stick.” The "doughnut" is a float that’s three meters in diameter, two meters thick and weighs 10 metric tonnes. The "stick" is a piling embedded into the seafloor which the float moves up and down on with the waves. Electricity is generated from this movement using a translator design patented by Haynes and is then sent to resistors housed in the dome above the water. Haynes says the engine is capable of producing anywhere from 1-20 kilowatts of power but the most he has ever seen it produce is 12 kW
from large waves made during a storm. Most of the year the waves are small, generating between 1 and 4 kW. "The key thing about waves, which is different from wind and solar, is that waves are continuous power with variability. Whereas solar and wind are intermittent power with variability," Haynes explained. "So with wave energy, there's constant power, there's always some energy there." As for what the future of wave energy as a whole will bring, according to Haynes the sky is the limit. "I think wave energy will be larger than solar and wind combined. Without a doubt. I can't understand why more people haven't got into wave energy," he said.

t's finally time to say "bonjour" to Paul. The French bakery that has roots back to the late 1800s in France has opened its doors at the company's first Canadian location, and it's right here in Vancouver. Located at 1164 Robson Street, Paul has an origin story that dates back to 1889 in its native France, though we here in Vancouver have been watching the space since early 2020. At Paul, bread and pastries are baked fresh in-house daily by Frenchtrained chefs, according to the bakery restaurant. Additionally, the café location has
breakfast, brunch, lunch, and dinner menus, promising "an authentic French experience." Currently, Paul is only open for takeout, due to B.C.'s restrictions on indoor dining. However, when the indoor seating opens, the restaurant will also have a special cocktail menu, in addition to meals and baked goods. The bakery drew crowds in its first days, with people eager to get their hands on Paul's croissants, patisserie, sandwiches, and macarons, and some people had to leave empty-handed, thanks to many of the goodies selling out swiftly. Paul began, to some extent, as a family
bakery run by Charlemagne Mayot and his wife in Croix, France. Their granddaughter married into the Holder family, which, by the early 1950s, were running a bakery called Paul. The families and businesses merged, keeping the name Paul. It would be 30 years, though, until Paul opened up outside of France, starting in Barcelona. The Paul chain - still run by members of the Holder family - operates in over 30 countries worldwide, and now that count includes Canada, thanks to the brand new Vancouver location.
