Inspired by Parton’s own adaptation of the song when she received her vaccine in March, the Vancouver choral group continued on the central message and poked fun at life during quarantine. "I think the big talking point for this is we want to encourage people to get their vaccines so we can all get back to maybe a new, new normal," said Rebecca Lam, the choir’s musical director. Before the pandemic, the YVR Pop Choir had 140 members and would perform live concerts and even flash mobs. Now though, the group has 60 members which meet weekly over Zoom.

he playoffs are one of the biggest reasons why Bo Horvat was drafted ninth overall by the Vancouver Canucks in 2013. In his draft year, Horvat had solid numbers in the regular season in the OHL, but erupted in the playoffs, scoring 16 goals in 21 games. There was something about his competitive drive and style of game that made him wellsuited for the playoffs and the Canucks knew it was exactly what they needed. Regrettably, Horvat hasn’t had many opportunities to prove himself as a playoff performer in the NHL. Horvat played his 500th career regular season game in the NHL towards the end of this past season, but he’s seen just 23 playoff games. He made the playoffs with the Canucks in his rookie year — scoring 4 points in 6 games — then thrived in the bubble in 2020 with 10 goals in 17 games, but he’s now missed the playoffs in five of his seven seasons in the NHL. He’s not a fan. “I want to win,” said Horvat. “I'm getting tired of being out of the playoffs and not being able to fight for the Stanley Cup.” Horvat, along with several other Canucks, spoke to the media on Thursday about the toll the season took on them and what needs to happen to get better for next season. While he made a point of saying that who the
team signs is out of his control, he did suggest he’ll make his voice heard. “If they ask my opinion, of course I'm going to tell them because I want to succeed here and I want to win,” he said. “I want to be on a team that is going to make the playoffs.” Here’s one of those opinions: the team’s biggest issue this season was depth at forward. “In order to win in this league and to win in the playoffs...not only do your top lines have to score but you have to have that depth in your lineup,” said Horvat when asked what was missing from their lineup. “I think if we can add that we're gonna be really successful.” The Canucks’ bottom-six certainly struggled to score. The team’s top point producer outside of the top-six was Brandon Sutter, who had 12 points in 43 games, then Tyler Motte with 9 points in 23 games. After that, it’s a wasteland. It’s not just the lack of points, however — the underlying statistics of the team’s bottom-six are equally troubling. The forwards who played on the team’s third and fourth lines this season didn’t drive puck possession and didn’t limit scoring chances against, all while several of them cost the team significantly against the salary cap. The question is where are those

additions going to come from? The team will once again be tight against the salary cap with new contracts for Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes. Improving the bottom-six while also making it cheaper will be a major challenge for this offseason. Even if the team can’t make major changes, however, Horvat is still optimistic for next season. “I feel like we have the right guys to make that next step, whether we add guys or not,” he said. “If we have the same roster as this year, guys just have to take the next step and we're gonna have to get better and win hockey games next year.”

Listed at $1,089,000, it has what LandQuest is calling a small "starter cabin" and a dock, and more than enough room for a nicer, more permanent structure. It has "panoramic seascapes" looking out onto Texada and other islands, as well as lots of trees, including one "beautiful gnarled mature Arbutus tree... found outcropping on the ledge of the south eastern tip bordering this site." ancouver continues to see the country's highest median rents for both one and two-bedroom apartments. Conducted by Padmapper. ca, a May report analyzes rental data from hundreds of thousands of active listings across the country. From there, listings are aggregated every month to calculate median asking rents for the top 24 most populous metropolitan areas. While one and two-bedroom apartment rentals remained flat in Vancouver in April, both increased in price this month. One-bedroom rent increased 1.6 per cent to $1,930 and two-bedrooms moved up 2.7 per cent to $2,670. Toronto continues to see the country's second-highest apartment rentals. Onebedroom rents increased 2.3 per cent to $1,790 and twobedrooms inched up 0.4 per cent to $2,310. Overall 16 cities saw rent prices increase, three
remained flat, and five saw prices drop since last month. Padmapper also notes that the majority of markets with increasing rates were in the top 10 most expensive cities: "This shift may be signalling a start to the reversal of the 2020 rental market trends. More Canadians may be considering moving back to expensive markets, to take advantage of low prices or in preparation of life returning to what it was like prepandemic as more vaccines become available, which would increase prices after a year of historic decreases." Barrie, Ontario has surpassed Burnaby as the country's third-highest market, with one-bedroom rent jumping 4.8 per cent to
$1,730, while two-bedrooms increased 0.6 per cent to $1,780. Burnaby is now the fourthhighest market, though one-bedroom rent stayed flat at $1,700 and two-bedrooms actually grew 2.3 per cent to $2,250. Victoria remains the fifthpriciest city in Canada. That said, B.C.'s capital city saw one-bedroom rent climb 3.2 per cent to $1,590 and twobedrooms leap 5.1 per cent to $2,070. The report is based on all data available in the month before publication. Any data that is reported does not include short-term or Airbnb listings. By Elana Shepert

Local brewery releases 'Green Screen IPA' for sneaky video call drinkers all-green tall can, with instructions on one side on how to make it invisible during video calls. Drinkers are instructed to take a screengrab of themselves in their video conference software, then use that image as their virtual background. The result is that the green screen technology makes the can disappear.
We tested it in Google Meet and it is as advertised; stealthy! And delicious. The design was produced by local agency St. Bernadine Mission Communications out of Chinatown, and the cans are available at select locations in Vancouver, including their location at 54 E. 4th Ave.

Environment Canada gives early summer weather forecast
A
re you ready for summer? Environment Canada has provided an early summer weather forecast for Metro Vancouver that calls for warmer temperatures overall. Meteorological summer commences on June 1, which is when the federal forecaster will release the official 2021 seasonal weather forecast for B.C. However, some models give an early indication that
the region will see warmer weather this year. Meteorologist Doug Lundquist told Vancouver Is Awesome that he feels most of B.C. will see aboveaverage temperatures for June, July and August. And while precipitation is difficult to predict over a week out, Lundquist raises some concerns for parts of the province. The interior has seen record-breaking dryness which is starting to be a
concern for wildfires. Metro Vancouver has very little precipitation in the upcoming forecast, too. And just how much hotter can we expect this summer to be? Lundquist states that the province will likely see "warmer than average" temperatures but he can't give an exact number. By Elana Shepert

Friends rally to help Vancouver boy with rare genetic disorder
F
ive-year-old Forester Perrin should be enjoying his carefree days like so many other kids his age. Unfortunately, life is much harder for the Vancouver boy. Forester, who is on the autism spectrum, also suffers from a rare genetic disorder called Fragile X syndrome (FXS) and will require one-on-one care for the rest of his life. The condition, which blocks a certain protein in the brain from developing, has no
cure and causes intellectual disability, behavioural and learning issues, and various physical challenges including the risk of seizures. A GoFundMe campaign was organized earlier this year by his father, Ben, a UBC law professor and author. The fundraising initiative will go toward a registered disability savings plan (RDSP) which will help Forester once he turns 60. Family and friends have since responded, contributing
over $40,000, and Perrin is touched by the donations. "We don't feel alone anymore. It's incredible and

While Perrin is hopeful for his son's future, he chokes back tears when talking about the stigma still surrounding people with disabilities. "The standard public level of support that people get for disability, living in a city like
it has really boosted our morale," he explains. Even Perrin's longtime friend, who now lives in

hen 4:20 p.m. hits, the action begins at Taco Ding Dong, a new East Van-based "ghost kitchen" delivery restaurant that promises to deliver eats inspired by a certain American fast food chain. (Ring any bells?) Launched Wednesday, May 19, Taco Ding Dong dishes up their riffs on drive-thru standards like the Cheesy Gordita Crunch, Rock’n Cheesy Tots, and the stacked seven-layer Cheesy Wrapped Blaster Burrito. The eats are available from when the munchies hit into the wee hours via online order for delivery seven days a week. So who came up with this concept that will save us that "run for the border"? It's Todd Graham, who began working on Taco Ding Dong's Taco Bell tribute menu last year at a pop-up event with Vancouver's The Narrow Group. Apparently, Graham's love of the chain is as intense as the Chalupa is greasy and as layered as the Mexican Pizza. Now, Graham has given the Narrow Group his blessing

UBC researchers explore what should happen to personal data, including photos and videos, after death videos. People could choose during life if photos or videos should be added to that. "One concept people clearly did not like at all was an AI-powered replica of the deceased person, which would interact with future generations. They said it was scary and creepy," says Chen in the release. Chen and her fellow researchers don't think it'll be long until this issue is common. “Ten years from now it will likely be quite commonplace for people to be thinking about the reams of data they have online, and there is a huge opportunity for research with larger populations and new interfaces to support people who care about what happens to their data,” said Dr. Joanna McGrenere, who co-authored the study. In the conclusion of the study the authors write about how people will need to balance wanting to leave something meaningful with what should be shared, deleted and saved. "Maintaining control over after-death selfrepresentation was also important for maintaining a sense of agency, as highlighted by participants’ reactions to AI replicas and collaborative games," they write. "These results and the design directions we present can help anticipate evolving user needs for how to prepare an ever-increasing amount of data distributed across a myriad of services and platforms." ue to the digital revolution, death and data are becoming intertwined. With more and more of our lives recorded and stored in different ways, a group of University of British Columbia (UBC) researchers wanted to look at how what should happen to it. Janet Chen, the lead author of a new study, grew up during the digital revolution and wondered about how social media will deal with her data post-death. "It struck me that many of the platforms I use don’t have great tools to support that data after I’m gone,” she says in a press release. “We wanted to look at how to curate this data both while living, and after death.” Chen and her fellow researchers felt Facebook and Google options currently available fell short. The study offered participants 12 different options and had them go through a workbook and react to the different ideas. The options varied in what they offered and how they worked, ranging from an AI that people in the future could interact with, based on a person's data to a preparedness badge that one would get once they set up their data to setting up a way to share stories or photos far into the future (at least 50 years). Another, called the 'Box of Data' posed the idea of data becoming physical. So someone's favourite songs would become a vinyl record, their favourite places according to Google Maps would become postcards, and popular social media posts could be made physical in other ways.

here is now more than $149 million in unclaimed money from dormant accounts in B.C. available to be claimed by the rightful owners, according to the most recent financial statements released by the not-for-profit BC Unclaimed Property Society (BCUPS). This includes an outstanding $1.9-million estate the legal heirs are unaware of – the largest unclaimed account in the BCUPS's database. BCUPS (unclaimedpropertybc. ca) is the administrator of British Columbia's unclaimed property program. In I 2020, BCUPS returned d $1,035,932 from dormant accounts to verified claimants who were unaware they had forgotten assets, said a news release. The society received $4,858,925 last year in unclaimed funds from the courts, the Public Guardian and Trustee of British Columbia, credit unions, insurance companies, various levels of government, and companies in liquidation to be reunited with the rightful owners. British Columbians' financial well-being prompting many cashstrapped individuals to look for non-traditional sources of funds such as unclaimed assets," said Alena Levitz, executive director of the BC Unclaimed Property Society. "Last year there was a significant increase in the number of people reaching out to BCUPS to inquire whether they had unclaimed funds waiting for them. BCUPS received more than 200,000 website visits in 2020, a 134 percent increase over the previous year. We also received 13,834 general inquiries during the year, a 171 percent increase over 2019." BCUPS holds unclaimed property as the custodian for rightful owners under the BC Unclaimed Property Act. The society tracks down owners of dormant accounts and maintains a free online database (unclaimedpropertybc.ca/searchp/ search/) where people can search to see if they have any forgotten money
waiting for them. If someone finds a dormant account in their name, they can claim the funds by completing a simple verification process that firmly establishes their identity as the rightful owner. There are no costs for BCUPS's services, and no time limit imposed to claim forgotten funds. Most unclaimed accounts in BCUPS's database amount to between $300 and $500. The single largest unclaimed property payout by BCUPS was a $1.01-million estate made in 2019.

AM I L IVING LIFE TO TH E FUL L EST ? It’s an important question for seniors to ask when debating whether to stay at home or move to a safe and elegant Amica residence with outstanding dining, socially distanced activities and senior care, if and when they need it. And it’s often the first step toward joining a friendly community of like-minded peers. Stay safe and busy It’s easy to slip into an uninspiring routine at home. At Amica, you’ll have daily opportunities to stay social and connected thanks to comprehensive safety protocols. And hope abounds, with many residents and team members already vaccinated for COVID-19. Each day, residents can choose to join safe activities from small and distanced fitness classes and creative workshops to online games, happy hour with doorway cocktail deliveries and more. Get the attentive care you deserve
Larry O’Brien, an active senior and former pilot in BC, found the answer when he moved to Amica White Rock with his wife, Marjorie. “The move enhanced our lifestyle significantly,” Larry says. “I thought it might be dull, but it’s been the reverse. And you couldn’t ask for a better staff: they’re attentive, empathetic,

ou could call Travis James ambitious. The Vancouver singer-songwriter has one goal - to sing for everyone in the city. It's a tall order, but the grassroots musician is taking it one step at a time. The challenge is even harder during a pandemic as crowded venues are still not a reality again in B.C. just yet. James' idea began three years ago when he started singing for people in concert lineups. Once COVID-19 emerged, and outdoor gatherings became all the rage, he hit the local beaches to serenade sun-seekers. The singer has since harnessed the power of social media and become a rising TikTok star (@ travisjamesmusic) with

his various impromptu performances. His popularity is even expanding outside the province. "I already have a lot of people from all over Canada that have messaged me. I'm sure once lockdown ends there will be opportunities to take this beyond the city," says the singer. For now, James will continue connecting with more Vancouver residents, and the artist is thrilled with the support he's received. "I think every true songwriter the goal is just to connect with people, that's why you write music, and to feel like your own city is giving you this much love, I'm just super grateful for that." ancouver police are hoping the likes of FamilyTreeDNA will help break open a brutal double murder from 1948. Known as the Babes in the Woods case, the skeletal remains of two children (believed to be 7 and 8) were discovered in 1953 near Beaver Lake in Stanley Park. For decades police have chased leads but to no avail. Discovered by a groundskeeper at the park, the bodies were covered by a woman's coat. Upon investigation, police determined they had been killed with a hatchet sometime around 1948. Other objects, like a belt and picnic basket, were also found nearby. “We still don’t know who these boys were, why they were in Vancouver, or who killed them,” says Sgt. Steve Addison in a press release, adding that there's hope While the murder occurred nearly 75 years ago, the Vancouver Police Department is hopeful a company based in Massachusetts will be able to help. contracted Redgrave Research Forensic Services to study DNA from the bones found and search for any matches among public DNA databases (like FamilyTreeDNA or GEDmatch). The same databases have been used to solve other murders and cases. “With so many people curious about their ancestry and willing to submit DNA for genetic testing, we think the Redgrave team can build a family tree for these boys and possibly identify others who are related to these young victims,” adds Sgt. Addison. “This process could give us new leads to follow, and we hope it will finally help us give these boys a name and identify their killer.” By Brendan Kergin

Community Centre grounds. "Marigolds are actually used throughout South Asia for all sorts of religious events, weddings, festivities. So, it's sort of an iconic symbol people are familiar with," explains PMRC creative director Jag Nagra. The gorgeous garlands even survived Monday night's little local storm. The flowers were sourced from a nearby business (no, they're not real!) and the group worked with Park Board officials to ensure the tree wasn't damaged during installation. Nagra hopes the initiative will remind
people of the area's historic vibrancy. "We want to honour that legacy that Punjabi Market has had. I brought my kids here so that they can see it and they grow up knowing what Punjabi Market is; we don't want to lose it," she says. The PMRC is keeping busy, as plans and fundraising efforts are underway with the Vancouver Mural Festival to bring outdoor public murals to the neighbourhood in August. wo adjacent parkades have had their top floors turned from parking spaces to childcare spaces.
Located in Gastown, the project cost $17.6 million to bring 74 new spaces for children on top of parkades at 150 Water St.and 151 West Cordova St. (which are connected by a short bridge over Blood Alley). "These are the first childcare facilities in Canada to be located atop a parkade, representing an innovative solution to underutilized space and the lack of space for childcare in Vancouver’s downtown
core," states the City of Vancouver in a press release. Of the 74 spots, 24 will be kept for "lowincome area families." The twin childcare centres offer 10,000 sq. ft. of indoor space and 11,000 sq. ft. of outdoor space. They also have been designed to meet LEED Gold certification and be net-zero energy buildings. "(It) is surrounded by breathtaking views of the North Shore and Burrard Inlet." adds the city. The project was initially approved in 2017 and doubled in 2018. In early January 2019,

childcare centres on Gastown parkades the budget was estimated to rise from $12.3 million to $14.3 million but that rose to $17.03 million by March of 2019 after more precise cost estimates were submitted, according to reports to city council. In a report from January of 2019 city staff noted the costs were rising due to material costs and the complexity of the project. "The project has extremely challenging site conditions which impact several design aspects such as structure and security. Passive house requirements have also added to the cost of the project," write staff in the January report. In an email to Vancouver Is Awesome a city spokesperson stated the final cost was $17.6
million. The bulk of that was $13.5 million for construction, with design costing $2.1 million. Soft costs and upgrading the base buildings were each $1 million. Money came from two sources; the province and the Union of B.C. Municipalities provided a $1 million grant and Community Amenity Contributions (CAC) covered the rest. CAC's aree contributions to the city from property developers paid when the city allows developments to go through via rezoning. The two centres will be run by the YMCA of Greater Vancouver. COV

FIGHTING ON THE FRONT LINES AGAINST COVID-19 When Dana started nursing, she never imagined she would be working during a pandemic. “Looking back, I can honestly say this has been one of my most difficult times in my 12 years working as a nurse,” says Dana. “I have experienced every emotion humanly possible: fear, sadness, anger, pride, love. I have worked late and arrived home physically and mentally exhausted.” But despite it all, Dana knows there is nowhere else she would rather be than fighting alongside her ICU family – the fellow nurses and doctors who continue to astonish her as they care for COVID-19 infected patients at VGH. “I have been so impressed with how quickly my VGH colleagues have adapted to the new COVID-19 measures,” says Dana. “It takes a lot to come together as a team during such an unprecedented time, but what I’ve been reminded of again and again is how strong we are, even in the worst of times.” It’s interesting, Dana reflects, as when COVID-19 first arrived in BC she remembers feeling fearful about not knowing what was about to happen. But when she got back into the hospital, her fears were alleviated. Dana saw how coordinated and careful the staff were being. How much thought and care they were putting not just into patient care, but into caring for the staff, too. “Now I’m going into the warzone, taking care of the COVID patients, but I’m not scared,” says Dana. “We’re learning more every day, and I feel like we’re going to get through this together.”
LIFE AS AN ICU NURSE AT VGH DURING A PANDEMIC
For 12 years, Dana Fedor has proudly served as a nurse at VGH caring for some of the province’s most critically ill patients. From the moment she graduated from Thompson Rivers University in 2008, she moved down to Vancouver and jumped headfirst into the neurosciences department. Dana worked in this department for a year before moving into what some consider to be one of the most challenging units in nursing – the Neuro ICU. Her work in the Neuro ICU consisted of helping patients recover from all matter of brain-related injuries and illnesses, from head traumas to complex neurological diseases and conditions. “I did that for five years and also did some charge nursing, but in the fall of 2013 I went for my critical care diploma, and jumped into the main ICU,” says Dana. “I just knew that I’ve always wanted to do critical care, helping people through some intense traumas.” One of those “intense” cases she helped care for was Alison Snowden, a double-lung transplant recipient and Oscarwinning writer, director and animator known for her work on Peppa Pig, Shaun the Sheep, Bob and Margaret and many more. But as the COVID-19 pandemic escalated, her work took a drastic turn.
FEELING THE SUPPORT
“As hard as it has been emotionally, I feel so proud to be a nurse and work alongside all the amazing staff at VGH and to receive the support of the community,” says Dana. “Even just going into work, I remember I was driving in one day, and at 7 p.m. I saw two ladies who had cowbells out and they peered into my car and they started waving and cheering. I’m not normally an emotional person, but I freely admit I was tearing up that evening.” Dana continues to soldier on, and it’s the love from her Vancouver community that has helped her push through to keep fighting.
