Orange shirt day design released early by Native Northwest

I

t's been less than a week since Vancouver Is Awesome announced that we're taking preorders for Native Northwest's new t-shirt in support of Orange Shirt Day 2021 (Ts’msyen artist Morgan Asoyuf's Every Child Matters design) and hundreds of our readers have already placed orders for them. In light of the recent discovery of the remains of 215 children at the site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School, it's been heartening to see so many people showing their support. Naturally, there have been some questions about exactly where the proceeds of the sales of these t-shirts will go. The net proceeds are to be split between two organizations; partial proceeds will go to the Orange Shirt Society (an organization that Native Northwest's president is on the board of), and partial proceeds will go to the BC Aboriginal Child Care Association, which is a Centre of Excellence for Indigenous early learning and child care in our province. As the wholesaler of these t-shirts to us (and many other B.C. retailers), Native Northwest will be making donations to both groups. The dollar amount will be calculated after the final order numbers come in and they cover the manufacturing, administrative, and operating costs of getting them out the door. As a retailer, we've marked up the price of them to match the price of all of the other t-shirts we sell ($25 each), and after we cover all of our costs we'll also be donating our net proceeds to the two organizations listed above.

No private businesses that I know of will be profiting from this t-shirt, and it's safe to say that based on the number of sales we've made so far, two charities will be receiving

thousands of dollars each from us, thanks to our thoughtful readers. Not only will these groups be getting funding to help them, but hundreds (if not thousands) more people will

be wearing orange t-shirts in support. To us, that's the most important thing here; getting people to wear these shirts. But getting shirts onto people's backs isn't enough. As we've been reminded, we have a very long way to go in terms of reconciliation in this country, and as long as I head up Vancouver Is Awesome as its publisher we will be committed to helping revitalize the relationships among Indigenous peoples and all Canadians. I'm proud to announce today that we recently finalized an agreement that will see us publishing regular monthly columns penned by our friends at Reconciliation Canada. Some will be authored by Chief Dr. Robert Joseph, and others by different people working within their organization. These columns will appear online, and in this free weekly newspaper that gets sent out to more than 100,000 homes in Vancouver. Again, the road to reconciliation will be a long one. Please consider buying an Every Child Matters t-shirt from our store at bcisawesome. com to help aid in the immediate effort at hand, and count on Vancouver Is Awesome for not only coverage of the current issues surrounding reconciliation, but for continued conversations and coverage regarding longterm solutions. For immediate assistance to those who may need it, the National Indian Residential School Crisis Line is available 24 hours a day at 1-866-925-4419. By Bob Kronbauer

he book says we may be through with the past, but the past ain’t through with us.” That line, repeated multiple times throughout P.T. Anderson’s masterpiece Magnolia, feels appropriate for the Vancouver Canucks on the tenth anniversary of their ill-fated trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 2011. As much as Canucks fans may want to move on from memories of 2011, the Canucks have yet to give them a way to do so. It was ten years ago — June 9, 2011 — when Maxim Lapierre scored the lone goal in a 31-save shutout by Roberto Luongo to take a 3-2 series lead. Since then, the Canucks have won just ten playoff games in ten years and made it out of the first round only once. That one time was last year and it gave some hope that the Canucks were ready to rise out of the shadow of 2011. Unfortunately, they fell right back into that shadow this past season. The Canucks have an entirely new team now. Just one player, Alex Edler, remains from that 2011 team and he’ll be a free agent in a couple of months. In place of the Sedins, Ryan Kesler, Alex Burrows, and Kevin Bieksa, the Canucks have a new young core — an exciting group of young players headlined by Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes.

Still, the spectre of the 2011 team still haunts the current Canucks. It’s invoked as an excuse for why the team waited so long to rebuild — they “owed” the Sedins to push for the playoffs, even as they failed to actually make the playoffs. The gutting of the prospect pool to push for the Cup and lacklustre drafting from that period is used to excuse the delay in the rebuild taking effect. The no-trade clauses that helped keep the cap hits down for the star players from 2011 were the excuse for not trading veterans on expiring contracts or for not getting as much in return in those trades. Then there’s the ghost of Roberto Luongo’s cap recapture clause, almost

proposed public art installation near False Creek has been met with pushback from area residents. The Boy Holding A Shark sculpture is to be installed by the Vancouver Biennale, a non-profit charitable organization that exhibits art in public spaces around the city. The sculpture was created by Chinese artist Chen Wenling and, if approved, would be erected on a raised garden area by the Vancouver Seawall to the east of Moberly Road in July, and remain there for two years. Standing at 7.8 metres high — or about 2.5 storeys, Boy Holding a Shark shows a tealcoloured boy holding a grey, dripping shark. It’s estimated to weigh 1,200 kilograms, the equivalent of a small car. For the keen-eyed, this style may look familiar as its creator also made the bright red, three-ton, 18-foot sculpture The Proud Youth which appeared in Yaletown in March. In fact, the two sculptures would be right across from one another looking over False Creek. According to the Vancouver Biennale, the Boy Holding a Shark intends to look into the subject of human nature. “Sharks are often considered to be ferocious animals,” the artwork’s webpage reads. “However, due to humans’ endless thirst for interest and expansion of destructive activities, the oceans and marine life, including sharks, have severely suffered from environmental damages, such as global warming and sea pollution, that are fatal to marine life.” There are those who don’t see it that way though. The petition to stop the sculpture’s installation was started two weeks ago and has so far garnered nearly 300 signatures. The petition points out the sculpture’s weight and size while calling it “an unsightly imposition” on the garden-like setting of the

neighbourhood. A signatory of the petition with the username Ann Ramsay says the oversized piece of art doesn't invite someone to observe, it forces them. “It is not appropriate in scale or in its location. I also question its integrity of intention,” Ramsay writes. Another signatory by the username of MC Marciniak also says the piece is not suitable for the location, claiming it will obscure views, which can affect property values. “We have many seniors and people who are mobility compromised,” Marciniak writes. “This is a place they come to for a break, to refresh, to re-energize and to feel close to nature. This section of the seawall is already a hazard without adding this abomination.” Barrie Mowatt, founder, president and curator of the Vancouver Biennale says this kind of opposition to the Biennale’s projects is far from uncommon. "These things have always happened," Mowatt said, adding there was significant pushback to The Proud Youth sculpture as well. "One of the objectives of 'the B' is that art is a catalyst, it’s really meant to be a vehicle to catch your attention, to engage you, to get the community engaged in some capacity,” Mowatt said. “That certainly has happened with Amazing Laughter and a couple of the other works." The petition also alleges there has been little neighbourhood consultation, to which Mowatt says the Biennale is following the consultation guidelines set out by the City of Vancouver. "It’s not as high as people are trying to imagine. Historically everyone always thinks things are much bigger and more oppressive than they actually are," Mowatt continued

On June 23, 2021, City Council will review an annual report which recommends new inflation-adjusted Development Cost Levies (DCLs) and CAC Targets, as well as adjustments to Density Bonus Contributions rates for referral to a Public Hearing in July 2021. DCLs are fees collected by the City of Vancouver from all new development. CAC Targets are contributions provided by property developers when City Council grants development rights through rezoning. Density bonusing is a zoning tool that permits additional floor space in exchange for amenities and affordable housing. These fees help pay for amenities such as parks, affordable housing, childcare centres, libraries, community centres, transportation and other infrastructure that meet the needs of our growing city. If approved, new rates would come into effect on September 30, 2021. FOR MORE INFORMATION: Chris Clibbon, 604-873-7237 chris.clibbon@vancouver.ca vancouver.ca/financegrowth

Vancouver city councillor’s fate now in judge’s hands

A

B.C. Supreme Court judge signaled Thursday, June 3, that his ruling in a conflictof-interest case involving Vancouver city councillor Michael Wiebe won’t consider the political ties of the legal action brought against the Green Party member. Justice John Steeves made the point in response to a concern raised by lawyer Wes Mussio, who is acting on behalf of 15 citizens who filed a petition against Wiebe over his vote in May 2020 on a temporary patio program. Some of those citizens are members of the NPA party, including Mussio, party

that it would be appropriate for the councillor to resign. Wiebe chose to remain on the job, which left either the city or at least 10 citizens to initiate court action, which is what led to the petition before the judge. Young’s report, however, was deemed inadmissible by Steeves on the first day of the hearing. He ruled that “the issues, evidence and conclusions in the report are for me to make, and they are at the heart of the petition before me.” At the end of the hearing Thursday, Steeves said he would deliver his written decision “as soon as I can.”

— including his own — and that the councillor should have recused himself from the vote. Faulkner-Killam’s position was that Wiebe acted in good faith when he cast his vote, that his business interests were filed previously on the city’s website and that the patio program benefited his competitors. She also made the point that the City of Vancouver itself chose not to proceed with legal action against Wiebe, who is a first-term councillor and one of three Green Party members on the 11-member council. There was some dispute between both lawyers over a conversation Wiebe had with then-city manager Sadhu Johnston over guidance given to the councillor prior to voting on the patio program. The case got to this point in court after Redmond, a retired lawyer living in Vancouver, complained to Mayor Kennedy Stewart’s office in June 2020 about Wiebe’s vote. At the agreement of Redmond and Wiebe, lawyer Raymond Young conducted an investigation and report on the complaint. Young concluded Wiebe should be disqualified from holding office until the next election in October 2022, and

president David Mawhinney, director Federico Fuoco and Michael Redmond, the lead petitioner in the case. “The issues here are legal ones and they apply to any politician of any stripe — which is to say, that if any politician steps offside in terms of their conflict-ofinterest constraints, then there’s ways to deal with that,” Steeves said. “And it doesn’t matter whether they’re right or left or pink, or whatever.” Wiebe was before the court because petitioners argued he was in a conflict-of-interest when he participated in a unanimous vote in May 2020 to allow temporary patios for restaurants, bars and breweries. Wiebe owns the Eight ½ restaurant in Mount Pleasant and is an investor in Portside Pub in Gastown. Both businesses received temporary patio licences. Council framed the motion as a measure to help businesses offset the economic damage sustained from pandemic-driven public health orders that banned dine-in food service. Mussio argued Wiebe’s vote was a clear example of a pecuniary interest and presented a conflict. He said the program benefited a specific group of businesses

Vancouver has a new chicken parm sandwich spot running out of a solar-powered food bus

@EATBURDY INSTAGRAM

Burdy says now they got a hold of the vehicle in April and have retrofitted the interior to allow for deep frying. Of course, the deep fryer is clutch (cluck?) to this operation with its focus on fried chicken or eggplant parm and seasoned fries on the side. The Burdy Chicken Parm Sandwich is made with fried chicken, tomato sauce, your choice of house-made basil or spicy mayo, parmesan and mozzarella cheese, on a toasted Portofino potato bun. The Eggplant Parm Sandwich is stacked the same, swapping chicken for double-stacked fried eggplant with the addition of fresh arugula. They're also offering Caesar salad and for dessert, tiramisu. Burdy has teamed up with Vancouver's Container Brewing

E

arlier this year a group of friends set out on a venture to create a Vancouver take-out and delivery restaurant specializing in chicken parmigiana sandwiches and fries, with an aim to run the concept out of a commissary kitchen. But plans change, and while the chicken parms are still going to be golden-fried and cheesy, Burdy is taking flight on wheels. Burdy is now a bright yellow solar-powered food truck - or, more specifically, bus - that is set to make its debut. The team behind Burdy is comprised of "four friends who have previously worked together in the food industry and frequently got together and would come up with new recipes just to try," they explain. Most of them hail from Ontario, where chicken parm sandwiches are popular, and they realized it's something missing from the Vancouver food scene. "We decided to come up with our own spin on the chicken parm recipe, and after coming up with a chicken and an eggplant sandwich we realized it was something we wished we could have ordered on the spot and delivered to us," a rep for Burdy told us.

CANUCKS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 5 Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider shared the Jennings for the fewest goals allowed. The 2010-11 Canucks weren’t just good — they were dominant. What the 2011 playoffs showed us is that sometimes it’s not enough to be the best. The best team doesn’t always win the Stanley Cup, whether because of injuries, running into a hot goaltender, bad luck, or some combination of all three. For the 2011 Canucks, it was definitely all three. So, despite the dominant regular season and the magical playoff run, the 2011 Canucks still invoke painful memories. It was supposed to be their year. They’d paid their dues for years as one of the top teams in the Northwest Division, overcome playoff hurdles like the Chicago Blackhawks, and raced out to a 2-0 series lead in the Final — but it ended in such crushing disappointment. Is it any wonder why some Canucks fans are dissatisfied with the current direction of the team? They’ve seen an outright dominant team fall short of the Stanley Cup, a team that was first in the Northwest Division for five-straight years and won two Presidents’ Trophies. Until the fans see a similarly great team, it’s understandable why they might have a hard time getting their hopes up. The Canucks currently have a team that might get into the playoffs next season if a lot of things go right. They don’t look like a team that is enroute to becoming one of the best teams in the NHL and helping Canucks fans move on from 2011. By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

and will be on the brewery's lot full time. "We have loved getting to know the team over there and we are excited for the future," says Burdy. The yellow chicken parm-slinging bus had a soft launch June 7 through 9 from 2 p.m. and will have its official opening Thursday, June 10. Burdy's permanent hours at Container Brewing, following the three-day soft launch, will be Monday to Wednesday 3 to 8 p.m.; Thursday and Friday 3 to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday noon to 8 p.m. Container Brewing is located at 1216 Franklin Street. Good Samaritans retrieve woman’s stolen wallet in a dramatic foot chase

Y

ou can raise money for childhood cancer just by playing video games. Gamers will unite during Gaming for Josh from June 25 to 27. The virtual fundraiser, hosted by the West Coast Kids Cancer Foundation (WCK), will help support kids with cancer in B.C. The event was organized in honour of an Abbotsford boy named Josh, who was diagnosed with cancer at 11 and died in 2013 at age 14. He had a fondness for video games and coped with isolation during treatment by playing online with friends around the world. Participants are encouraged to pledge donations and spend the weekend playing their favourite video games. "Stream your play if you want to. You can send us

a snapshot of you playing online and then just share it through social media," adds foundation executive director Shannon Hartwig. A PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, donated by Best Buy Coquitlam, will be awarded to the top fundraisers. Funds raised will help support programs like WCK Hangouts, a safe virtual space where kids explore activities and connect with peers while engaging with volunteers. Hartwig describes why the event is so important. "I think, as a parent, when you have to go through the worst possible thing of losing your child, the biggest fear is that people will forget them and we're not going to forget Josh." As her strength was starting to wane and the thief kept gaining ground others picked up the torch. “People started to chase him! And not just one person - lots of people!” Cullen writes. “At least two people on bikes, people on foot, and one man even came out of his house to help.” Worki king i together, the group cornered the man at the end of the next block and they got the wallet back. In getting the wallet back they let the thief go, a decision Cullen says she was okay with as she wanted her wallet retu turned u more than anything. As the wallet was ass retu turned u and all its contents were

accounted for she started thanking the group profusely. “I was shaking and smiling, overwhelmed by what had just happened - and especially by the kindness and quick action of these strangers,” she said. At around this time, Cullen realized she had left her bags on the corner two streets back. She says that even as she ran back to her belongings people askeed her if she was okay -- includ ding a local security tyy guard. gu u She assured them all she waas fine and ass she rounded d the corner she found a smaall crowd of four or five peeople gu guarding u her bags. “I was ass overw rwhelmed w fo or the second time,” Culleen said. “By the kindness, kii the community tyy spirit, the incredible humanity tyy off all these people.”

Although, Cullen did manage to snap a photo of the people who had stood watching over her bags as the chase ensued. Before the wallet ordeal, Cullen had been wondering how, after the hardships induced by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we as a society could come together again. She wondered if things would ever be the same -- if we as a society have become a group of individuals after being forced to isolate ourselves from one another. “I’m here to tell anyone who will listen, that, not only is our community spirit alive and well in Vancouver -- it miigh ht be sttronger than ever,” she said. “I have always believed in the power of community ty, y and of the human spirit. That we are basically good, and that we want to help each other. But I have never had such tangible evidence before.” Cullen extended her thanks to every ryy person who stopped, helped, shouted support rt, t ran and every ryone y else who cared what was ass happening to her that day.

Twitch in arm not uncommon after vaccination

D

id you feel a strange shock in your arm several minutes after getting your COVID-19 vaccine? While many people are prepared for a range of side effects post-vaccination, there are a few lesser-known ones. As far as your arm is concerned, possible symptoms following a coronavirus vaccine are pain, redness, itchiness or swelling near the site of the injection. These symptoms may surface immediately and/or seven days later. But there's one other peculiar sensation that you might not have been expecting.

Some people experience what could be described as a twitch or minor shock somewhere near the site of the injection. However, many of them say the twitch isn't painful, albeit somewhat

woman whose wallet was returned by a group of quick-footed Vancouverites says that even during a global pandemic the city’s community spirit is alive and well. Courtenay Cullen was standing on Commercial Drive the afternoon of Monday, May 31 after having bought a housewarming gift for a friend. She had also bought a coffee from a local cafe and as she was organizing her purchases she felt a tug at her unzipped purse. Cullen turned to see an older man in dark clothing reaching inside the purse and as she realized what was happening he grabbed the wallet inside. “T “Then T every rything y happened very ryy quickl kly,” l Cullen wrote in an email to Vancouver Is Awesome. “‘Hey!’ “‘‘ I said rather disbelievingly, and like a shot, he took off and ran up the street.” Cullen yelled after him again and shouted to passersby the man running ru u away had just made off with her wallet. In fact, he says the response may follow any type of vaccine — not only COVID-19 ones. "That's a real thing," he said. "The shot just happens to be going into a trigger point in that deltoid muscle that will

actually spasm or twitch." Wong, who practices acupuncture and does trigger point injection, notes that trigger points are areas in different muscles "including the deltoid where we give the shot." Should you be concerned? Wong said the response is quite normal and there isn't any reason to be worried. By Elana Shepert

G

reg Anctil has demonstrated remarkable courage and positivity while persevering through over 20 years of immensely difficult health challenges.

In 1999, Greg was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, and the severity of his chronic illness required him to undergo a colostomy. “I had not dealt with illness on this level before,” recalls Greg. “I was ascending in my law career, living in a big beautiful city, and then, it all stopped. It was pretty devastating.” During his recovery, he became involved with the C.H.I.L.D. Foundation, a charity that provides support to children with intestinal and liver disorders and is committed to finding a cure for pediatric Crohn’s disease. It was during his time as a volunteer when he met his wife Karilyn, and they eventually got married and had twins. While continuing to endure health issues and medical attention over the following years, Greg focused on being the best husband and father he could be. Then in 2015, an unexpected illness of a different magnitude surfaced. While hospitalized in Victoria for a surgical procedure associated with his Crohn’s disease, Greg was suddenly diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). Requiring immediate treatment at Vancouver General Hospital, he underwent chemotherapy. With the help of skilled medical support and Greg’s own strength and optimism, he

defied the odds and went into remission. Due to the impact of his medical treatments, Greg developed Avascular Necrosis, resulting in severe pain that limited his ability to walk or use his arms for the next year. Thus, he required four joint replacement surgeries on his hips and shoulders to restore function. In February 2020, it was discovered that his cancer had returned in the form of a rare Myeloid Sarcomas after almost 5 years of remission. Once again, Greg had to put his life on hold to undergo chemotherapy at VGH, just as the COVID-19 lockdown had begun. Despite facing another terrible situation after having already spent over a year of his life in the hospital, Greg continued to do everything he could to fight his cancer and be there for his family. As of today, Greg’s cancer is in remission and his health has stabilized. “Taking weekly blood tests and looking after my health in general is something that I have to always think about, but right now, it’s relatively manageable,” says Greg. He has continued living his life, and is back home again with his family, where he has taken up meditation, baking, and cheering on his kids as they compete in sports. Greg has started a new work-from-home position at a law practice based in the B.C. interior, leading their Labour and

Employment Law Department. He also continues to be involved with C.H.I.L.D. Foundation as a board member, a position he has served for over ten years, and has taken up speaking engagements to talk to people about living with Crohn’s disease. “I’m naturally inclined to put my experiences behind me and move forward, but I also know there are people out there with health issues that look for stories like me,” says Greg. “I hope they can find encouragement and strength in hearing my story.”

While undergoing medical treatments, Greg had been told on many occasions that he had less than a 10% chance of surviving. His survival proves that no matter the diagnosis, there is always a chance. “Statistically, I probably shouldn’t be here,” says Greg. “But if you don’t give up, don’t lose hope, and keep fighting, you can find strength where you can and keep moving forward.” Never letting his medical experience define him, Greg maintains a positive spirit and continues to forge ahead with his quiet strength and unrelenting determination, inspiring his wife, his children, and those who know him. His story is an example of how not to give up in the face of adversity and to continue to live life to the fullest. Vancouver transformed into a dystopia in post-noir detective video game often smelling of someone else's perfume and something... herbal (this is Vancouver after all). Your task is to gather information and evidence on what Odette believes is her husband’s unfaithfulness. The case seems like a straightforward one, Lotor even calls it “easy peasy” on his to-do list. So you start out, stepping onto Granville Street which Lotor says smells like wet concrete and overpriced fast food some things don’t change even in alternate realities. The investigation doesn’t go well at the start, other characters are wary of talking to you, seeming almost immediately suspicious of you. This is due in part to the line of work you’re in but a bouncer at The Bite jazz club

A

beautiful and disturbing video game set in an anthropomorphic dystopian version of Vancouver pits the player against a dark storyline involving classism, racism and murder. Backbone, a post-noir roleplaying detective adventure game developed by the EggNut game studio, allows you to step into the shoes of Howard Lotor, a rough and tough trench coat and tie-wearing private investigator. After years of small-time cases, lonely evenings, and just barely scraping by, Lotor is swept into a job quite unlike any other before it. A modern take on the classic point-and-click adventure, the gameplay

highlights a darker theme, not allowing you to enter due to your species -- a raccoon. It seems only members of classes above your own are permitted entrance, specifically the wealthier and more desirable cats and dogs. Lotor presses on though with help from an old acquaintance named Larry who has fallen on hard times and hangs out in a grunge-filled alleyway. Through puzzlesolving, code-cracking and suspenseful stealth sequences Lotor uncovers something much darker, pitting him against the oppressive, systemic power hierarchies of the city itself. The full game was released on PC on June 8. By Cameron Thomson

allows you to explore the world and engage in elaborate dialogues inspired by old-school CRPGs. The game’s prologue, now playable on Steam, shows off the city through highresolution pixel art and 3D effects like dynamic lighting, pouring rain, fog and neon lights. Along with the stunning visuals comes an impeccable soundscape including what the game’s developers describe as “dystopian doom jazz.” Playing as Lotor you start off by speaking to a pregnant otter named Odette about her husband who just hasn’t been himself lately. Along with acting oddly, Odette says her husband has been coming home late,

Lane closures coming for Lions Gate Bridge work

T

he Lions Gate Bridge needs almost $5 million in maintenance work and lane closures five nights a week if commuters want to continue going with the flow. Starting the week of June 14, the bridge will have overnight lane closures from Sunday to Thursday while crews overhaul the bridge’s counterflow traffic system. The province first installed the counterflow lane in 1994. It was last rehabilitated in 2002 and the infrastructure is now coming to the end of its life. The work involves replacing all the wiring, upgrading the signals on the bridge and Stanley Park Causeway with more efficient LED bulbs, and upgrading the software used to control the entire system. To make that happen, crews will be taking one lane out of commission between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., five nights a week until midNovember. Toward the end of the project there will be some full closures of the bridge, overnight on weekends. Sidewalks and bike lanes will remain open while the work is done. Staff from Miller Capilano Highway Services monitor the bridge 24/7 and manually flip the direction of the counterflow lane to help ease congestion in downtown Vancouver or on the North Shore, depending on which side needs

it more. They also shut down a lane whenever emergency crews need immediate access to the bridge or causeway. Bridge commuters won't notice much of a difference once the project is complete, aside

from brighter and more energy efficient signal lights, said North Vancouver-Lonsdale NDP MLA Bowinn Ma. “But its importance really shouldn't be underestimated. This counterflow system

is what enables us to get as much traffic capacity as we do from the Lions Gate Bridge, which supports up to 60,000 [crossings] per day,” she said. “The counterflow lane switches directions as much as 30 times a day. You can just imagine the chaos that can take place if we lose system reliability.” The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure once considered a movable barrier for the counterflow lane using a “zipper truck” like the ones currently used on the Alex Fraser Bridge, Ma noted, but with so many switches per day, staff determined it wasn’t feasible. Although traffic plummeted in the early days of the pandemic, it is now back between 80 and 90 per cent of its typical volume, Ma said. The ministry has awarded a $4.7-million contract for the system upgrade to Paladin Technologies Inc. of Vancouver. 'Sneaky Artist' raising money for India COVID relief

N

ishant Jain got tired of learning how machines work; he wanted to know how life works.

The Vancouver resident has a master's degree in engineering but has since turned to the world of art.

Jain calls himself the 'Sneaky Artist' and began sketching people and cityscapes when he lived in Chicago several years ago. The self-taught artist now calls Yaletown home and continues to capture city life with the stroke of his pen.

As India's pandemic plight recently began making headlines, Jain shifted attention to his home country. The illustrator created the 'Faces for India' campaign. He sells highresolution personalized portraits to collect COVID financial aid. Proceeds go toward nonprofit organizations Khalsa Aid and GiveIndia. The project has become so popular Jain has now completed over 200 portraits. Jain says it's been a way for him to

elevate his art. "It's so heartening to see how many people step up to help, as long as we make these channels of helping possible to them. So I see my role here not as an artist, I see my role here as a facilitator," he explains. Jain continues to take submissions and also offers Zoom workshops for other budding artists. VANCOUVE R AVIAN RES E ARCH CEN TRE BA NDS BIRDS

I

t's just another day at the office for the Vancouver Avian Research Centre (VAR (V VARC). R For over a decade, the volunteer group has operated a bird monitoring and banding program at Colony Farm Regional Park in Port rtt Coquitlam. Banding occurs year-round and migration monitoring happens annually from April to May and Augu gust u to October. The group records the age, sex, wing and tail lengt gths, t fat deposits, and body mass of various bird species. The data gathered contributes to avian research, including migration patterns, behaviour, and longevity ty. y Bird banding also provides information on how to conserv rve v the land and environments in which species live and breed. Colony Farm, in part rticular, t is a popular stopover site for migratory ryy birds. "There's obviously a lot of development, a lot of

urbanization, on the escarp rpments p surrounding the park which tends to push birds down into the park, and the height of the vegetation here is ideal for bird banding because birds are moving at net height, not moving through the mid or upper canopy," explains VAR ARC R chair, Derek Matthews. The group is also carefu ful u not to put too much stress on the little ones. "The welf lfare f of every ryy bird is our top priority tyy at all times. So bird banding, of course, can be stressfu ful u for the birds and what we try ryy to do is minimize that stress by holding birds for very ryy short rtt periods," says Matthews. Ovv 1,400 bird species are threatened by extinction Over worldwide. As birds continue to face numerous threats globally, VAR ARC's R monitoring and data collection plays a vital role in local habitat conserv rvation v and avian education. By Thor Diakow

Vancouver restaurant patios reduce loneliness, increase happiness for patrons: study

A

recent study looking into the effects of the City of Vancouver’s temporary patio program has found the outdoor dining experience benefits both the business and restaurant-goers. Created by Happy City, an urban planning and design consultancy based in Vancouver, the study worked with five local breweries to evaluate the benefits of the program. The study found that the patios not only helped the breweries protect their revenues but also boosted happiness and friendliness among patrons. A key observation was that patrons seated on the new patios demonstrated happier behaviour than those seated indoors. For instance, 48 per cent of people on patios were observed laughing, compared with only 32 per cent inside. A higher share of people was also seen speaking to each other outside than indoors. “We expected the patios to be popular with patrons, but were surprised at how important they were for supporting social connection,” Mitchell Reardon, a senior planner at Happy City. In light of the loneliness that has been brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, the study suggests that outdoor patios can reduce bring people closer together by providing space for social interactions. Nearly all patrons, 99 per cent of them, said the patio was a place they’d like to meet friends. Another 82 per cent said they’d like to meet new people on the patio, compared to just 57 per cent of those seated indoors, if COVID-19 wasn’t a concern. Mauricio Lozano, co-owner of Faculty Brewing hopes that in light of the survey’s findings the City of Vancouver will keep the patio program going in a post-pandemic world. “Our patios really kept us going during COVID, allowing us to serve enough customers to stay viable. But this study shows that patios also contribute to happier and healthier communities,” Lozano said. By Cameron Thomson

Broadcasting icon Red Robinson reflects on legendary life Are you interested in improving your brain health? Would you like free exercise?

The study lasts for 6 months and participants will receive free, 1-hour exercise sessions at Vancouver General Hospital. All classes are instructed by certified fitness instructors. THOR DIAKOW

Researchers from the University of British Columbia are inviting people between the ages of 65 and 85 to participate in a research study. This study aims to determine whether an exercise program can benefit brain functioning.

H

e may be retired, but he's still rockin'. For over 60 years, Red Robinson was a fixture in the Vancouver broadcasting scene. He was elected into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and was appointed to the Order Of British Columbia in 2016.

The City of Vancouver even declared Red Robinson Day on March 30, 2017. The legendary broadcaster retired from radio in 2011 but continued to broadcast his show on former local radio station CISL 650 AM until he finally hung up the mic for good in 2017. But Robinson still finds ways to connect

with all his fans. He now utilizes (with a little help from his friends) social media platforms, like Facebook, to share stories and post classic clips. After interviewing hundreds of celebrities throughout his professional life, one stands out for the veteran rock DJ. "Bill Haley, he's the guy that put together 'Rock Around The Clock.' He was a tremendous guy to interview. If you were interviewing him, he could give you chapter and verse everything to do with rock and roll," he reminisces. While Robinson's claim to fame has become pop culture nostalgia, a certain irony remains when he recounts his expansive career. "You can't look back in life, you've got to look forward. And I never tried to do that, except when I had the radio show. It's unbelievable what happened; it was like a fairy tale come true." By Thor Diakow

B

.C. has done many things differently than other provinces when it comes to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the key differences is B.C. keeping its K-12 school system open with in-person learning the entire school year. It has been a controversial decision. The BC Teachers’ Federation has challenged almost every aspect of the reopening plans. Social media has been home to critics savagely attacking keeping schools open, with many spreading misinformed claims that about classrooms. While all provinces began the school year with in-person learning, some – notably Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta – have switched to online learning for long stretches of the year. The result has been a confusing, unpredictable mess of a school year in many places outside of B.C. Dr. Bonnie Henry has insisted since B.C. schools reopened last spring that there is low transmission in schools and that protecting the mental health of young people was worth what was - and remains - a relatively small risk of getting the virus from inside a school.

Indeed, a recent report by Ontario’s Science Advisory Panel concluded school closures have a widespread and significant negative impact on students’ mental and physical health as well as their academic achievement To its credit, the BC NDP government has let Henry and public health officials make the determination of risks and benefits that flow from having schools open just as it gives public health the lead hand on pretty much all COVID-19 decisions. As I have noted in this space before, Premier John Horgan told me when the pandemic began he would not be the lead public face on this issue and would leave things pretty much up to Henry, Health Minister Adrian Dix and other cabinet ministers. That stands in stark contrast to some other premiers, notably Ontario’s Doug Ford and Alberta’s Jason Kenney. Ford, in particular, has presided over clumsy, inconsistent and political approaches that sometimes closes schools and sometimes does not. Ontario has now closed all schools until the next school year. Just as B.C. took a softer approach when it came to in-person dining -

B.C. was absolutely right to keep schools open during COVID-19

f much for h off the h year, this hi province i was the only province west of New Brunswick where you could sit down at an indoor table at restaurant and enjoy a meal with others - we have taken a softer approach when it came to schools. B.C. parents overwhelmingly support the continued reopening while parents in Ontario are feeling quite the opposite right now. Some things have been hit and miss in this pandemic. Officials in all provinces were slow to act to curb the threat of COVID-19 on long-term care homes, for example, and the border with the U.S. stayed open too long.

B B But B.C. C got iit right i h when h iit came to keeping our schools open. As the end of the school year approaches, it is worth noting cases associated with school-aged kids have remained consistently low since the pandemic began: fewer than 25,000 cases (4% of the school population) and less than 130 hospitalized (.02%). B.C. schools are safe and they are open. Both of those accomplishments rank as two of the province’s biggest and most important victories in this pandemic. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC.

City approves motion to make Commercial Drive 'pedestrian-first' enhanced crosswalks, which will allow for "physical distancing while walking, cycling and shopping that also supports outside dining and vending." To create a consistent road geometry, the number of travel lanes south of 1st Avenue would be reduced while the city continues to maintain and improve on-street parking spaces to support local businesses. ne of Vancouver's most popular shopping, dining and nightlife districts will be getting a makeover following a city council decision, but no budget or timeline has yet been set. The City approved a motion in a council meeting in late May, to slow traffic on Commercial Drive and make it more pedestrian-friendly. The motion, submitted by Councillor Pete Fry, calls for a slow street that will be "shared by all users" and favours a "stop and shop model" with the speed limit reduced to 30 km/ hr. It would prioritize Commercial Drive as a "Pedestrian-First High Street." Other ideas include widened sidewalks and

significant proposed changes that could affect "the ‘Italian Day on the Drive’ event or change the historical context and heritage of the 8
