a thumping success, and Furbacher teamed with Rabbitats’ founder Sorelle Saidman to develop a standalone venue. “I wasn’t sure what to expect because I thought the rabbits would all be so shy and nervous, but was surprised to discover how interactive they were with people,” said Furbacher. “It’s so fun getting to know the buns and all their different personalities, and nothing’s more delightful than seeing a bunny ‘binky' for the first time.”

Sorelle Saidman is hoping The Bunny Cafe will demonstrate that rabbits can make excellent pets, and help get them adopted into good homes. She also hopes that people will be inspired to host colonies of rabbits in other situations. “There are so many abandoned domestic rabbits in BC, they need to be adopted out in colonies to really make a difference. People can see what a joy it is to be surrounded by sweet, curious bunnies.”

old or older, and face masks, hand-washing and social distancing is required. Once you’ve done that, a Bunny Whisperer will go over how to safely handle the rabbits to ensure a colony of happy, stress-free buns. This does mean you will not be able to pick up the bunnies and, if a bunny decides to tuck themselves away in their private “bunny benches,” you’ve got to give them their space. On the other hand, this does make room for the more eager buns to come to you. Why would they pay you a visit aside from pure curiosity? Each visitor to the cafe will be given a cup of treats like kale, cilantro, apples and other greens to feed them! Michelle Furbacher is the owner of Catfe and Bunny Cafe and first became aware of Rabbitats’ innovative Meet and Treat events that the organization staged as “bunny therapy” for students. Furbacher invited the rescue organization to stage a hop-up event at Catfe in December of 2018. It was

Located right here in Vancouver, the long-awaited Bunny Cafe is open and raring to take reservations. Visitors can have a meetand-treat with two-dozen adoptable rabbits and browse an array of bunny merchandise from the same people who brought you Catfe, Western Canada’s first cat cafe. The Bunny Cafe was expected to open a year ago, but challenges with the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic sent the project down a rabbit hole. The venue will be hosting the rabbits and a retail store for now, with the cafe side of the operation opening later this year. To visit, you first need to make a reservation for your 55-minute-long visit. Guests must be five years

fter a disastrous 2020-21 season, the Vancouver Canucks just want to get back into the playoffs

next year. “Once you make the playoffs, then anything can happen,” said Canucks general manager Jim Benning at the end of the season and, to a certain extent, that’s true. It’s been shown statistically that hockey is the major sport most prone to randomness. What this means is that there are more opportunities for the underdog to succeed in hockey, which is part of the reason why it’s so fun and compelling to watch. If enough goes right, an underdog can upset even the best team in the league. The Montreal Canadiens would seem to provide an example of how this philosophy can work. After

all, the Canadiens had the worst record of any playoff team with just 59 points in 56 games. Two teams that missed the playoffs — the New York Rangers and Dallas Stars — had more points than the Canadiens. And yet, the Canadiens are in the Stanley Cup Final. They took out the top team in the North Division, the Toronto Maple Leafs, in seven games, swept the Winnipeg Jets, then took down the Vegas Golden Knights, who had the most wins in the NHL this season with 40 — 16 more than the Canadiens. But it’s not random that the Canadiens are in the Stanley Cup Final. The Canadiens are a good example for the Canucks to follow, but not because they just squeaked into

winning Colorado Avalanche had a better corsi percentage, which measures shot attempts for and against. In other words, the Canadiens consistently out-shot their opposition all season. The Canucks, by the way, were 28th in the NHL in corsi percentage. The main reason their record didn’t reflect that dominance is because their goaltending was putrid. Carey Price had an ugly .901 save percentage in the regular season — suddenly, in the playoffs, he’s playing like the $10.5 million goaltender his contract says he is, with a .934 save percentage second only to the Lightning’s Andrei Vasilevskiy. LETTER: Expo 86 t-shirt sparks 'heartwarming talk' between strangers Theresa McCullough writes: I just had to share a story r with you regarding the Expo 86 t-shirt r [purchased from V.I.A.’s online store at bcisawesome.com]. I had just received it and I wore it to work the next day. As I'm standing there, a gentleman comes up to me and asked me if I had gone to Expo 86, and I said yes. He then proceeded to tell me that in 86 his family had

taken a trip to Canada for the first time, was wandering around the city t exploring and saw the huge lineups and decided to line up along with them. He had no idea what it was, but he said it was the most incredible experience he has ever had. He then went on to tell me how he had escaped Israel and moved to Canada. He told me about the horrors

that he had to endure and how much better life in Canada was for him and his family. It was as just a really nice heart rtwarming talk with this gentleman who had nothing in Israel and has come to Canada and has every r thing now. Vancouver WAS Awesome

O

n March 1, 1911, the City of Vancouver’s boundaries extended to encompass District Lot 301, an area of land surrounded by the City of South Vancouver on its west, east and south sides, and by the City of Vancouver on its north – the area bordered by present-day Main Street, Knight Street, King Edward Avenue, and 15th Avenue. With the incorporation of this land into the City of Vancouver, certain services, such as sewage and water, and infrastructure, such as sidewalks and streets, needed to be extended to the residents of District Lot 301, or as it had been renamed, Ward 8. In January 1912, the City passed Bylaw no. 895 for raising money by way of debenture for the purchase of land and for the building of a firehall for the area. The site selected was on the corner of Burns Street (now Prince Albert Street) and 24th Avenue. The City selected Cowan & Bennett, a contracting-builder duo, as the successful contenders for the building contract. Completed in 1913, the firehall, pictured here, served as Firehall No. 13 for nearly 90-years. Plans to replace it with a modern structure were underway when a fire destroyed it in January 2002. head, missed the playoffs by a wide margin. The Canadiens control the puck so well partly because of their forward depth, as all four lines play well at both ends of the rink. An illustration of their depth is they’re going on this playoff run without two of their best players, Jonathan Drouin and Tomas Tatar. On their top line, Brendan Gallagher has just 5 points in 17 playoff games and Philip Danault has just 3 points. It hasn’t mattered. Danault and Gallagher have been able to play a shutdown role against some of the best forwards in the NHL because they’ve been able to depend on offence from bargain free

When the Canadiens looked for veterans to play on their fourth line, they went out and got Eric Staal and Corey Perry, two former 40+ goal scorers who can still play a solid two-way game, rather than defensive specialists, who can’t provide any offence. After several surgeries and consultations with specialists, she was diagnosed with both Crohn’s disease and chromosome duplication, which puts her at risk for aortic aneurysms. As Miranda grew older and her complex health challenges and medical traumas increased, so did her mental health challenges. Due to the hospital visits, surgeries, and long intensive recovery periods, she would miss days, weeks, and months of school. Miranda experienced isolation, anxiety, and depression, which led to self-harm and abuse of pain medications to numb the overwhelming physical, mental, and emotional pain. Despite the pain and frustration she felt, Miranda never gave up and sought help from counsellors and psychiatrists to address her underlying issues and overcome her challenges. Miranda’s incredible courage is not only as one who has come back, but as one who constantly gives back by seeing her challenges as opportunities to use her experiences to help others. “I must use what I have gone through to help others so they might feel less alone,” says Miranda. When Miranda was 5 years old, her father passed away suddenly, leaving her mother alone to care for three young children, including one with significant health challenges. “The love and support of my mom, despite the incredibly challenging circumstances of her own, was an incredible source of support for me,” says Miranda. “She was always there in the hospital with me, and I couldn’t have gotten through all of that without her by my side. Miranda underwent her first surgery when she was 8 years old. She had to undergo the painful process of physical therapy, having to wear a scaffolding brace and re-learn how to walk again. Five years later, the second set of leg surgeries meant that she had to endure the

In 2011, she volunteered with Me to We and Free the Children in Kenya, Ghana, and India to work on volunteer projects and create sustainable solutions to the challenges faced in developing countries. Miranda has completed Peer Support Training and Core Addictions Practices through Coast Mental Health and Fraser Health Authority. She has worked with Early Psychosis Intervention in Abbotsford and Creekside Youth Detox in Surrey, Ridge Meadows Youth Wellness Centre. Throughout the pandemic, Miranda has been working as a Peer Support Worker with

Miranda is looking ahead to graduating from Simon Fraser University with a Bachelor of Arts and Sciences, a certificate in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and a minor in Indigenous Studies. She aspires to study Global Health, attend medical school, become a primary care provider, get involved in more global philanthropic projects, and travel to more countries — such as Uganda. Miranda has turned her own challenges into an opportunity to be of service to others. “The greatest thing I’ve learned is the power of connection and community between people as a catalyst for healing,” says Miranda. “I’m fortunate to have the opportunities and platforms to make those connections, and I’m excited for what the future holds and how I may continue to use my story to help others.”

VPD looks to identify men who assaulted police during brawl at English Bay

F

ollowing an altercation in Vancouver two weekends ago, the Vancouver Police Department is looking for two men who interfered and assaulted officers while they attempted to make an arrest. The incident occurred around 7 p.m. on June 18 after VPD’s beach patrol officers were called to investigate a large fight and a possible assault involving 10 people The officers were trying to diffuse the situation and disperse the crowd when one of the people involved began causing a disturbance and refusing to leave, according to a VPD release. When the officers handcuffed the 20-year-old North Vancouver resident, dozens of beachgoers surrounded them and made the situation more volatile. Constable Tania Visintin says some in the crowd acted worse than others. “We’ve reviewed video clips posted

online and have identified two agitators who incited the crowd, assaulted the police officers, and obstructed them as they were doing their jobs,” Visintin says. “We need help to identify these people and are asking anyone who knows them to call us.” The first suspect is a white man who appears to be in his early 20s. Video posted online shows this

man refusing commands to step back, rushing at the officers, and physically assaulting them while they were struggling to control the suspect. The second person VPD hopes to identify is a dark-skinned man in his 20s. Video posted to social media shows this man shoving a police

officer as she attempted to escort the suspect through the crowd. Three VPD officers were injured during the incident, and one was taken to hospital. Anyone who can identify the two suspects is asked to call

investigators at 604-717-2541, or make an anonymous report to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477. By Cameron Thomson

Salmon VR experience coming

I

f you've ever wanted to witness the spectacle of salmon migration in virtual reality, now's your chance. UNINTERRUPTED is back; the dazzling art display first projected the Pacific Sockeye salmon’s homeward journey on the underside of the Cambie Bridge in 2017. Now the project is going mobile. This summer, groups of 20 people

can experience the 30-minute extravaganza at three outdoor Metro Vancouver locations. "The art piece is about bringing the heart of a river into the heart of a city. These really extraordinary, kind of cutting-edge, technologies really soak up documentary language if you embrace the abstract," says director Nettie Wild. The event will launch on the

Museum of Vancouver's garden patio from July 7-11. From July 14-24 it will move to the Shipyard Commons at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver (courtesy of the Lower Lonsdale BIA). You'll also be able to catch the film at the Burnaby Art Gallery veranda between August 3-13. There are several shows per evening.

Seth Rogen smokes cannabis with Conan O'Brien on TV

V

ancouver actor Seth Rogen appeared on the front page of our paper last week for selling his "pot" at the Vancouver Art Gallery for a whopping $12,000. But it wasn't the green stuff you normally see the funnyman promoting. The Vancouver-born actor, comedian, cannabis enthusiast, and relatively new artist donated an untitled vase with a pronounced texture and vibrant orange colour — showcasing a glaze he created himself — to the charity art auction. Of course, Rogen hasn't forgotten about weed. As legendary late-night TV host Conan O'Brien wraps up his 11-year run on TBS, he featured several of his favourite guests as he counted down the days until the final episode on June 24. He plans to create a new show for HBO Max in the future that will move away from his nightly talk show format. Rogen made an appearance on the beloved host's show Tuesday, June 22 — but the jokesters did a little more than swap funny stories. While he normally doesn't indulge, O'Brien took a puff of one of Rogen's

joints. When the host suggested that he should relax in the days leading to the end of his show, Rogen didn't miss a beat, swiftly retrieving a joint from the pocket of his shirt. Conan had pointed out that he is "going to have a lot of free time now" that his show is off-air and he won't know what to do with it. Rogen said the host should try smoking some weed.

At one point, Conan says, "I enjoy my lucidity" to which Rogen remarks, "Never a sentence I've even thought in life." Conan also jokes that he thought Rogen pulled out a birthday candle when he saw the joint. He also holds the joint the wrong way at first. "Is it supposed to burn?" By Elana Shepert

Vancouver Foundation funds creation of an Eastside Arts District

I

n the interest of improving East Vancouver’s already vibrant arts scene, the creation of an Eastside Arts District has just received a financial green light. The Eastside Arts Society (EAS), formerly the Eastside Culture Crawl Society, has been awarded $300,000 by the Vancouver Foundation over three years to create the arts district. The project will increase the society’s capacity and dedicated workspaces for artists, programming initiatives and opportunities for artists across all disciplines, the society states in a recent release. The arts district is being created as a remedy to the hundreds of artists that have lost their workspaces due to evictions, rent increases, and shrinking studio space since 2010 says Esther Rausenberg, the artistic and executive director of EAS.

EASTSIDE CULTURE CRAWL

A16 VANCOUVER

“The Vancouver Foundation grant is the first step towards the creation of policies and funding models that will offer sustainable solutions for artists,” Rausenberg says. “At the same time, the establishment of a designated arts district will serve to formally recognize the significant value and impact artists make on a healthy, thriving society, while simultaneously enhancing economic growth and boosting tourism.”

Over the next three years, EAS will collaborate with the City of Vancouver, which launched its own 10-year plan to support arts and culture in 2019 and passed a unanimous motion in February 2020 to support EAS’ initiative to define and develop an Eastside Arts District. Over the three years of funding, the EAS will take into consideration policies and CONTINUE ON PAGE 17

legislation, zoning and real estate. The EAS will also create maps of East Vancouver’s studios, galleries, theatres, public art and breweries as well as engage with the area’s stakeholders, artists, and Indigenous leaders. Based on compiled data and feedback, EAS will develop a plan that includes the expansion of year-round arts programming opportunities, according to the release. The EAS will also create an interactive website to serve as a resource for both locals and tourists as well as preserve cultural and artistic sites within the community, and establish

new workspaces for artists. The society is also announcing the CREATE! Arts Festival, a two-day community arts-making event coming this August. The festival will feature hands-on art-making activities led by local visual artists and craft makers. More information about the festival will be announced in July. The EAS will be putting on the 25th annual Eastside Culture Crawl this year with dates set for November 12-14 and 18-21. For more information check out culturecrawl.ca.

The immersive film captures the original bridge projection in stunning 3D. Audience members are fitted with a VR headset and seated in a swivel chair for a 360-degree view. All equipment is sanitized between showings with ultraviolet light. The project's creators are also working with community stewardship organizations to highlight salmon preservation in our cities. UNINTERRUPTED VR is free but seats must be reserved. Online booking is now open at uninterrupted.ca/vr-onlocation. More locations and dates, including a return to downtown Vancouver at the end of August, will be announced throughout the summer.
