Buyout season is coming for the Canucks but cap relief will be limited

The buyout window opens 24 hours after the conclusion of the Cup Final and runs until July 27. During that time, teams can buy out as many players as they wish, with the cost of the buyout spread out over twice as many years as there are remaining on that player’s contract. As a result, a buyout offers temporary cap relief at the expense of a portion of that player’s cap hit lingering a little

The question is, who can or will they buy out and what will the implications be? It starts with Jake Virtanen. Unless the Canucks get his contract off the books via some other mechanism, Virtanen is almost certain to get bought out. At under 26, he’ll only be owed 1/3rd of the remaining value of his contract. Instead of $2.55 million cap hit next season, a bought out Virtanen would only have a $50,000* cap hit — significant savings. In the 2022-23 season, he would have a $500,000 cap hit and that’s it. A buyout would be well worth the cost for multiple reasons.

BOB KRONBAUER

“Ownership has given us the resources to do whatever we need to do to get back to where we want to be next season and that's a playoff team,” said Benning. “Buyouts are going to be part of our strategy this summer to save cap space.”

With the Canucks needing to re-sign young stars Elias Pettersson and Quinn Hughes and also to upgrade several areas of their roster, they need all the cap space they can muster. At this point, they really have no choice but to turn to buyouts.

Unfortunately, the Caanucks would get diminishing returns from other buyout candidates.

salary cap for the 2021-22 season, but the following year he would have a $1.9 million cap hit at a time when the Canucks will need to re-sign Brock Boeser. Add in the cost of a replacement backup goaltender and buying out Holtby might prove too costly.

Braden Holtby is owed $5.7 million in actual salary in the final year of his contract. Buying him out would save the Canucks $3.8 million off the

year of Eriksson’s contract would still leave the Canucks with a $4 million cap hit next season, a savings of only $875,000 compared to just burying him in the minors. He would then have a $1 million cap hit in 2022-23. It’s a similar story for Antoine Roussel and Jay Beagle. Buying out Roussel would save the Canucks just $141,666 compared to burying him in the minors. Beagle, meanwhile, has a guaranteed signing bonus in his

final year, so a Beagle buyout would actually mean a bigger cap hit — by $325,000 — than just burying him in the minors. As much as buyouts need to be part of the Canucks strategy this offseason, there’s a limit on how much cap relief they can actually get. With the budget seemingly tight due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canucks didn’t use any buyouts last year. That prevented them from having the cap space available to re-sign a free agent like Tyler Toffoli. This year, however, Canucks general manager Jim Benning has made it explicit that they intend to use buyouts.

n an attempt to tap into a growing market built on second-hand luxury items, a Vancouver boutique is selling a rare and highly collectible skateboard with a whopping fivefigure price tag. Courtney Watkins is the owner of Mine & Yours, a luxury consignment and eCommerce boutique. She says the way consumers value and purchase luxury goods is rapidly changing. As Gen Z and Millennial audiences turn to TikTok and social media for financial advice, purchasing high-end designer brands and luxury streetw ear is the latest trend where investors have found success in secondhand items. “Your wardrobe doesn't have to depreciate your wallet. People are now strategically utilizing clothing as collectible, valuable, tradable assets,” Watkins says. Watkins recently acquired one of those highly sought-after investment pieces: A Louis Vuitton X Supreme Boite Skateboard Trunk. Watkins says she has seen the board sell for $59,000 when it was first released and is reselling now for over $100,000 USD. The board and its case were created by the French luxury brand and the cult New York skate label and was first unveiled in 2017 at the Louis Vuitton AW17 Fall/ Winter Menswear fashion show in Paris.

Given the popularity of the brands involved, the piece has become more collectible than ever anticipated. The rarity and pop culture significance, Watkins explains, is perhaps what’s causing them to steadily increase in value. Where other resale websites have valued the board at $100,000 USD, Mine & Yours will be selling theirs for $95,000.

As luxury clothing labels begin to draw groups of young, tech-savvy, investors, Watkins says she believes the perception around how consumers view clothing will rapidly evolve. “The way the current market is projected—we’re about to see explosive growth in the luxury resale industry,” Watkins says. BCCDC warns to ‘prepare for the worst’ ahead of wildfire smoke was recently decimated by a wildfire. Sarah Henderson, scientific director of Environmental Health Services at the BCCDC, says smoke has resulted from catastrophic wildfires that have occurred in western North America every year from 2016 to 2020. “There is no reason to believe 2021 will be any different,” Henderson said. “Let’s start getting ready for the smoke now rather than waiting until it arrives.”

In a recent notice, the BCCDC writes that wildfire smoke is made up of gases and fine particulate matter. These particles carry great risk to human health as they can be inhaled deep into the lungs and cause inflammation and irritation. Some of the other components of smoke can also irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. “In 2017, 2018, and 2020, we experienced consecutive days and weeks of the worst air quality that most people

he British Columbia Centre for Disease Control is warning British Columbians to prepare for what could be a wildfire smoke-filled summer. While no alerts concerning smokey skies have been made yet for Metro Vancouver, the public health agency says it’s time to prepare all the same. The warning comes on the heels of the near-complete destruction of Lytton, a town in B.C.’s interior that

will ever experience in British Columbia. We know that smoke really affects how people feel when it’s happening,” Henderson said. “There is growing evidence that exposure to seasonal wildfire smoke may have longer-lasting impacts on our health.” While the timing of wildfire smoke is mostly unpredictable, the BCCDC recommends taking the following measures before the smoke arrives: • Be aware of people in your household who may be more sensitive and susceptible to wildfire smoke including those with chronic conditions like asthma, COPD, heart

disease, or diabetes, pregnant people, infants and children, and older adults. • For those who require rescue medications, especially for respiratory conditions like asthma, stock up to ensure you have supplies on hand for when the smoke arrives. • Consider purchasing a portable air cleaner with a HEPA air filter to reduce particulate matter indoors. • Use a well-fitted respirator or three-layer cloth or disposable mask outdoors. A good fit around the mouth and nose is the most important thing; inhaled air must pass through the material of the mask, not around it. • People working outdoors should consult their occupational health and safety team about wildfire smoke protection. - Learn about different tools you can use to monitor current air quality and wildfire smoke forecasts. • During smoky times, keep your indoor air cleaner by closing your windows, recirculating air through a forced-air system, and using an air cleaner. our weeks ago we were floored by the initial response to Tsimshian artist Morgan Asoyuf's Every Child Matters t-shirt, which shows two eagles holding around like a heart, depicting them protecting with love. In the first few days, we sold more than 1,000 of them, resulting in roughly $11,000 in profits. 100% of that will be donated to the Orange Shirt Society and the BC Aboriginal Child Care Association.

We had initially aimed to sell 100 shirts, and I'm proud to announce that as of this week our readers have purchased more than 2,000 of them, allowing us to make a donation of more than $20,000 to be split between two organizations which work to raise awareness and benefit Indigenous children in British Columbia. Large mural on Vancouver street honours Indigenous children TAMARA BELL

A

bright orange mural stretching down a full block of Vancouver's Commercial Drive now honours the lives of children who were sent to residential schools across Canada. For Haida artist Tamara Bell, painting the mural offered a profound opportunity for healing. The goal was to get 17 people to paint the 17 letters on the black asphalt. However, Bell tells Vancouver Is Awesome that roughly 50 people helped with the project throughout the day on July 1. "There were Indigenous people from a homeless centre, residential school survivors, allies, and artists," she explains. "It was really a meeting of the minds when it came to the actual physical work." Bell says the group chose Commercial Drive because it has a large Indigenous population. When the mural was complete, some Indigenous people told her that they were so glad to see it done. "We really needed this," she says. "It was beautiful." Two residential school

survivors helped paint the murals and were "really struggling with the trauma," explains Bell. "They put the t-shirts on; they started painting. And I would check in with the two of them all the time and I asked them, 'How does it feel,' and both of them said, 'We needed this so badly because we had to move from trauma." As an artist, Bell says she has always found art therapeutic; "Art heals." But the experience she had creating the mural was new for Bell. "I've experienced so much racism," she says. "So it was really interesting how these very young, enthusiastic, political, people were so down to help; it was moving. "People have jumped on

irmal Singh Bhogal may be 80 years old, but he still has work to do. The Vancouver grandfather is the man behind Baba's BooBoo Bowls, a unique fundraising initiative that helps sick children in the province. When COVID-19 caused the suspension of his usual volunteer work, Bhogal turned to his pastime to give something back. He has been handcrafting wooden bowls in his garage and selling them for charity since last summer. Originally from India, he comes from a family of carpenters. All proceeds from the bowl sales go to the BC Children's

He relies heavily on donated wood that would have otherwise been discarded. The craftsman also manages to salvage pieces while walking in forested areas of his neighbourhood. Hardwood works best and Bhogal is always looking for walnut, cherry, mahogany, maple, and oak. Three trash skimmers, called Seabins, are being placed around Granville Island as a pilot project. They will capture floating refuse and raise awareness about plastic pollution. The Seabins are designed to capture litter before it travels further into the ocean and enters the food chain. There are plans to install a total of 12 bins in Vancouver waterways over the next three years. The bins skim the water surface using an electric pump that operates 24 hours a day. Water is sucked in from the surface and passes through a catch bag inside the Seabin. The water is then pumped back into the marina, leaving litter trapped in the bag. aptain's Oven, a brick-oven Neapolitan-style pizza joint from Surrey, has just launched its second Metro Vancouver location, and this one is in the heart of downtown's Coal Harbour area. The pizza spot has moved in at 1110 West Pender Street, which had previously been Melu juice bar. Captain's Oven fires up pies on handstretched dough in its three-ton brick oven imported from Italy. While some pizza restaurants opt to zero in on a small selection of options, Captain's Oven is creating pizzas with just about anyone in mind, with a menu of over 40 kinds of pizza, from simple cheese to globally-influenced ingredient combos. They even make a chocolate dessert pizza. The menu is split into sections - meat, vegetarian (with a vegan option), and "Pizzas Around the World." You can order up a pizza inspired by a classic Philly Cheesesteak sandwich or Japanese Chicken Teriyaki. A Portuguese pizza comes topped with mozzarella, ham, red onion, hearts of palm, green olives, and sliced boiled egg - for something a little different. But if you want more traditional pizza, they also have good old pepperoni, or the polarizing Hawaiian, along with Margherita, a "Meat Lovers," or pizza loaded with roasted veggies. For something truly indulgent, Captain's Oven makes a loaded seafood pizza: the "Fisherman's Catch" boasts a dozen jumbo prawns, crab, scallops, smoked salmon, garlic oil, capers, and green onion. TransLink: Face masks 'recommended' on Metro Vancouver transit

S

tarting July 1, TransLink says masks have moved from being mandatory to "recommended" on Metro Vancouver’s public transit system. The change follows the announcement that B.C. has moved into Step 3 of its fourstep restart plan. Masks are no longer required in public indoor settings in B.C. However, they are recommended for anyone who hasn't been fully vaccinated. TransLink encourages customers to continue wearing masks on transit as a "precautionary measure to protect themselves, fellow customers, and our employees," explains a news release. They first instituted the

@BENBMURPH / TWITTER

mandatory mask policy in August 2020. Prior to that, the company handed out over 15,000 branded masks at key transit hubs as part of the ‘Wearing is Caring’ campaign. The transportation authority will continue to follow the guidance of experts and senior levels of government, emphasizing that Metro Vancouver's public transit system has been a safe way to move around the region

during the pandemic. "We will continue to follow our safe operating guidelines, which includes increased cleaning, improved sanitization measures and thorough ventilation on our vehicles." As the economy gradually reopens, TransLink adds that it is ready to support B.C.’s "Restart Plan" and welcome customers back to its transit system. By Elana Shepert

Thrilling 'mountain coaster' opening at Cypress

I

"

've seen things you people wouldn't believe.”

Well, it might be more believable than attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion, but this is still impressive. A local photographer recently captured a photo of the Vancouver Lookout at the Harbour Centre complex but it looks like it belongs in the dystopian cinematic universe of Bladerunner. Aamir Ullah, an Oakridge resident, has been exploring his passion for photography over the past three years. While he enjoys taking "pretty pictures" he strives to tell stories through his work. Ullah certainly struck that chord with the Harbour Centre photo because when he posted it to social media,

+

without even mentioning the classic 1982 sci-fi film, it was the first thing many thought of. "Have you ever retired a Vancouverite by accident, Mr. Deckard?" quipped Redditor leadenCrutches. As it turns out, making the tower look like it could have been an establishing shot in either of the Bladerunner films is exactly what Ullah was going for. “I aimed to go for this orange Bladerunner/dystopian look due to how the weather was looking that day, Ullah wrote in a message to Vancouver Is Awesome. “I was on a rooftop the day after the record heatwave and the entire city was a bit hazy.” “I’ve always liked the sci-fi aesthetic of films like Bladerunner, so I wanted to

create that vibe while also letting people know that it’s still Vancouver. It also just kind of emulated what I was feeling the day before with temperatures being so hot, the orange cast of the city kind of depicted how it felt to sit at home boiling like you’re in a pot.” While the photo of the lookout itself is not edited, Ullah changed the background to include the slanting, all-metal buildings and flying vehicles. Ullah says from start to finish the photo took him an hour to complete. To see more of Ullah’s work you can check out his website at aamirullah.com or Instagram account at @aamir.u_ By Cameron Thomson

The Coaster was fabricated by Austrian manufacturer Sunkid - a world leader in providing family adventure attractions around the world. The Sunkid ride features a low to the ground singletrack design with backrest carts equipped with a hand brake, which allows each rider to control their own speed. "Our coasters have been a huge success in Europe, and we are excited to have the opportunity to install

one at Cypress Mountain in beautiful West Vancouver, British Columbia. The terrain on the slopes will perfectly complement our technology and create an amazing ride," said Sunkid's CEO, Emanuel Wohlfarter. Ticket prices include a chairlift ride up to the top of the attraction and start at $29 CAD. All dates and hours of operation are weather and conditions permitting. By Elana Shepert

CYPRESS MOUNTAIN RESORT

A

re you ready to "fly like an eagle?" Cypress Mountain Resort says visitors will feel an incredible adrenaline rush as they take off from the top of the Eagle Express Quad Chair on Black Mountain on its thrilling new downhill attraction. Over a year in the making, The Eagle Coaster travels over 1,700 metres with 279 meters of vertical drop down the mountainside, but it is suitable for all ages and physical capabilities. Riders can safely reach speeds of up to 40 km per hour winding down the track with forested vistas and exciting bends. Cypress Mountain adds that the new Mountain Coaster will offer another recreational activity for people to enjoy on the mountain in the summer months. It is slated to open on July 12 with 80 spots available for riders per day.

he's come a long way since sharing the mic with Pink.

Vancouver's Victoria Anthony was just 12 when she sang to the pop superstar - and a sold-out crowd - at Rogers Arena in 2018. Now the 15-year-old singersongwriter has a new single out and continues to be a force in the music world. The self-taught performer has managed to maintain

creative control of her work. Anthony conceptualized and co-directed her new video for the track 'Dirty Lipstick'. "It's a really interesting place in my musical career, where I'm just totally exploring the dualities of being a teenager," explains the artist. Her debut album, Real Life, was released last October and has amassed 4.5 million streams across various platforms.

The singer is still firmly rooted in Vancouver and remains grateful for all the local support over the last three years. "It's incredible seeing the local support that I have and all my friends are so kind," says Anthony. Anthony will be releasing several other singles later this year and is working on a new album for 2022. By Thor Diakow
