Mexican immigrant to Vancouver started entrepreneurial journey at 21

+

TANMAY AHLUWALIA

A

s a personal trainer and founder of Legends Vancouver fitness centre, 29-year-old Ricardo Trevino has come a long way to become one of the most popular trainers in the city’s fitness scene. Ricardo immigrated to Canada with the belief that his passion for fitness training would not help him put bread on the table. Now he runs a fitness centre that serves more than 25 clients and welcomes independent personal trainers who can rent his space. Recognition does not come easy, especially for immigrants like Ricardo, who face barriers like high international student fees, learning a new language, settling in a new culture, and having little understanding of how to get a business registered. He was already a certified fitness trainer by the age of 17 in Mexico, but needed a separate certificate in Vancouver as not all foreign credentials are recognized in Canada. “Folks at the gym where I use to work out helped me get a certificate,” says Ricardo in an interview at his fitness centre on West Pender Street. After getting certified, he was able

to rent a space in a gym to bring his clients to. “Initially I was giving personal training in other gyms and those guys there would take 75% of my income as commission. At that time I wished I had my own space,” Ricardo says. Born in Monterrey, Mexico, he moved to Vancouver at the age of

19 to study animation at Vancouver Film School. Little did he know that a conversation with a stranger would be a turning point in his career. “I decided to study animation because I thought fitness is not going to put food on my plate. I did not give training but would regularly work out to stay in shape. While I was helping my classmates at the gym, someone noticed me and asked

if I could train him.He was willing to pay me, and I excitedly said yes. That was a turning point as I experienced what it feels like to train people in Canada. Being in a different country with poor English was a struggle as I had to regularly talk with people to help them succeed in their fitness journey. When I finished animation, I realized I needed to

make a transition,” he explains. A year later, at the age of 21, Ricardo convinced his then business partner to open a gym. “In Mexico you can do whatever you want to but here you need to go through a lot of permits and signatures,” he adds. Luckily, his business partner knew the procedures, and they were able to get started. The initial months were stressful as it was hard to pay even the rent. On most days he would work from 6AM till 9PM. In March 2021, he decided to go solo and open another gym. The new place that he could afford was much smaller but furnished with gym equipment. “I earn my passive income by allowing other trainers to bring their clients and rent my space,” he says. “My income is stable, and I now can give enough time to my own health as well. So far so good amigo,” says Ricardo with a big smile on his face. In the future, Trevino wants to do fundraiser events for charity purposes and build a much stronger community of fitness enthusiasts. heresa Louise Wise, known as Louise to her friends, turned 17 the week before she was murdered. A grade 11 student at Windermere Secondary, Louise was the oldest of four children and lived in the Renfrew area of East Vancouver. Her father, Jack Wise, was a constable with the Vancouver Police Department. Louise’s friends knew her as a friendly, hard-working, and deeply religious girl who was a member of the Future Nurses Club, participated in Bible study class, and volunteered at the hospital. In the summer of 1971, Louise was hired as a "flower girl" and became one of the ubiquitous teens stationed with flower carts outside liquor stores and hospitals. Louise had convinced her parents to let her stay at home by herself while they took the younger children on a family holiday to Birch Bay, in Washington state. Louise phoned her friend Gail on the day that she died. She told Gail that her family was away on holiday and asked if she would come over. When Gail arrived, she was surprised when Louise asked her about her boyfriend Al and confided in Gail that there was a man who had been bothering her at her flower-selling job. He had insisted on walking her home the previous evening she told Gail, and that

he made her uncomfortable because he behaved aggressively toward her. He was older, probably in his mid-twenties, and had told Louise that he was from Hamilton, Ontario. Louise asked Gail to spend the night, but Gail had a date with Al and said that she couldn’t stay. The girls left together—Gail to her house, Louise to a church service. No one saw a man around Louise’s house that night. Because there was no forced entry, police believe that he’d either followed her home from church or was already waiting for her at the house when she got back. Likely not knowing what to do, the young girl may have let him in. A neighbour of the Wises, who had been holidaying at Birch Bay with the Wise family, returned to Vancouver early and

promised that he would check in on Louise. When he couldn’t reach her by phone, he went to the house on Thursday around 11 a.m. He found Louise dead in the livingdining room. She had been raped and stabbed. The knife was still in her chest. In 1996, the Provincial Unsolved Homicide Unit launched with a mandate to reinvestigate cold cases. That year the province had about 700 unsolved murders on its books, and DNA was successfully used to solve some of them. But when detectives took another look at Louise’s file, they found that the murder knife was missing from the evidence room and any chance of retrieving the killer’s DNA was lost. By Eve Lazarus

my descendants and society as a whole." Customer demand for the unique flag has skyrocketed. "Our store in Vancouver, and we look after the mainland plus outside of Canada, we're getting about 75-100 [orders] a day," says Braverman. In fact, sales of Canada's national flag, usually popular this time of year, have gone way down at the shop. "Our Canada flag sales in June were lower than our slowest month before COVID." Braverman describes the late artist's impact and legacy: "He was an amazing man; he had the biggest heart of anybody. This flag, it's not that we did this, but his flag got out there and suddenly he became a somebody." Wilson's design is displayed on flags of various sizes and several other products, including buttons, bracelets, pins, and even temporary tattoos. A portion of the flag sales goes to an educational fund for Wilson's two children.

t's another busy day at the office for Susan Braverman. The owner of Vancouver's The Flag Shop is trying to keep up with demand for one particular item, as her store is manufacturing and supplying a very special sort of flag. The Canadian Native flag was created by Vancouver Island Kwakwaka’wakw artist Curtis Wilson. Braverman worked with the B.C. Indigenous designer on a motif to represent First Nations in the country to the public. Wilson passed away tragically from a heart attack in 2019 at the age of 39. His revised depiction features swimming salmon and an orca inside a maple leaf. The design is called Gelgapola, which translates to "Standing together in support of each other." A statement from Wilson on The Flag Shop's website explains his creation: "I created this design while sitting at my dinner table thinking about who I am and where I came from. The achievements, character, and work ethic of my family have enabled me to provide my creative thoughts and art to make the world a safer and better environment for

N t week’s Next k’ expansion i d draft ft also brings a trade deadline

T

he newest NHL franchise, the Seattle Kraken are poised to be a key arrival for the Vancouver Canucks for years to come. There’s just one problem right now: they don’t have any players. That issue will be resolved next week in the expansion draft on July 21, where the Kraken will be able to select one player from every other NHL team — excluding the Vegas Golden Knights, who just joined the league four years ago. The Golden Knights also won’t be getting a slice of the Kraken’s $650 million expansion fee. When it comes to the expansion draft itself, the Canucks have little to be worried about. One of the benefits of being a bad team that finished last in their division last season is that you don’t have a lot of good players that you need to protect from the expansion draft. It helps that key young players Quinn Hughes and Nils Höglander are exempt from being claimed by the Kraken, as are many of the team’s promising prospects like Jack Rathbone and Michael DiPietro. The Canucks will be protecting seven forwards, three defencemen, and one goaltender, but they arguably don’t even have that many players worth protecting. At forward, there are really just four forwards they absolutely must protect — Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, J.T. Miller, and Bo Horvat. They’ll add Tanner Pearson to that list, along with two of Tyler Motte, Kole Lind, Zack MacEwen, Matthew Highmore, and Jonah Gadjovich. None of that latter list would be devastating to lose. On defence, the only three defencemen it makes sense to protect are Tyler Myers, Nate Schmidt, and Olli Juolevi. Thing is, Juolevi is arguably not an NHL defenceman, there are rumours the Canucks are trying to trade Schmidt,

and Myers is overpaid with a $6 million cap hit that the Canucks should be exposing in hopes the Kraken will take the contract off their hands and ease their cap burden. In net, the Canucks will obviously be protecting their young number one, Thatcher Demko. While it might be somewhat depressing for Canucks fans that their roster offers such slim pickings for the Kraken, it also represents an opportunity. Many other teams around the NHL are not as lucky as the Canucks and have too many good players. When the expansion draft rolls around, they’ll lose one of those good players to the Kraken for nothing. Or, the Canucks can offer those teams a trade. They’ll still lose that good player, but at least they’ll get something back — a prospect or a draft pick, maybe both — and the Canucks can then put that good player on their own protection list and keep him out of the grubby tentacles of the Kraken. That’s why the expansion draft also comes with a trade deadline for the Canucks. Protection lists are due by 2pm on July 17, informing the Kraken of the players who will not be available for selection. If the Canucks want to make a trade for a player and then put him on their protected list, it will have to be by that deadline. The Canucks could target a defenceman like Travis Dermott from the Toronto Maple Leafs or Ryan Graves from the Colorado Avalanche. Or they could shore up their forward depth with a quality defensive winger like Zach AstonReese from the Pittsburgh Penguins or young forward with upside like Mathieu Joseph from the Tampa Bay Lightning. The right move this week could help the Canucks come out on the winning end of their rivalry with the Kraken for years to come. By Daniel Wagner - Pass it to Bulis

f you have a soft spot for soft serve there's a brand new ice cream shop in Vancouver you may want to put on your list to check out. Chocobar Creamery is swirling up their organic milk soft serve, and vegan soft serve, at 485 Main Street as of Friday, July 9. The new cold treat venture in Chinatown has a sweet line-up of ice cream concoctions on the menu, like fully loaded "Monster" shakes, as well as sundaes and simple cones - although you can also get a little gold leaf on your cone, because why not?

Monster shakes earn their moniker thanks to being stacked with delicious extras. Chocobar Creamery's options include the Strawberry Cheesecake Monster shake, which is a milkshake loaded with New York-style cheesecake, wafers, Pocky sticks and strawberry jam. L

ast week the Vancouver Park Board issued a notice letting people know they've temporarily closed swimming at Trout Lake because of high E.coli levels present in the water, reminding some residents that people actually swim in this literal peat bog. Located in John Hendry Park, much of the land around the "lake" was donated by the Hamber family in 1926, and another parcel was purchased by the Park Board from the Salvation Army for $2,500, with plans to develop it into a park with recreational facilities. News reports dating back to the early 1900s talk of people skating on the lake, which is a perfectly acceptable use of this body of water when it freezes over in the winter. It was even referenced as "an ideal swimming spot" in a news article in the Province in 1927. However, even though the Park Board calls an area next to the lake "Trout Lake beach" and employs a lifeguard there, and the Vancouver Heritage Foundation calls it "East Vancouver's only beach", you should never, ever swim here. Yes, there is presently a piece of land there that the Park Board has made to look appealing by trucking in loads of sand. And yes, it is an absolutely wonderful place to spend an afternoon, however, if you glance to the north you'll notice a massive off-leash dog park. Break out the binoculars or simply stroll

over to the other side of the bog and you'll find every dog in East Vancouver taking literal poops on the beach. The dogs frolic in and out of the water, and when it rains the poop that wasn't already deposited directly from their butts into the water leeches into the small, shallow body of murky, duck-andbug-filled water. Don't swim here. And don't just take my word for it, take a signal from the Freshwater Fisheries Society of B.C. who do not stock the lake with edible trout for people to catch, even though they stock many other urban bodies of water such as Sanctuary Pond near the PNE, Deer Lake in Burnaby, and Green Timbers urban lake in Surrey. It's tempting as it does look like it should be a nice place to swim, but I assure you it is not. You'd be much less open to acquiring swimmer's itch and disease if you were to swim in the public Renfrew Pool, a 7-minute bike ride away. It generally has much less poop in the water, and while they don't advertise it anywhere I can promise you that it has 100% fewer leeches than Trout Lake does. Sure, you have to register to swim and it costs a few bucks (or free if you're on assistance), but your chances of survival will be much higher if you take this simple advice. By Bob Kronbauer

It might be hard to imagine nowadays with B.C.’s wood prices being so high, but 100 years ago cedar and fir were seen as economical, quieter than stone pavers, and also easier on horses’ feet. Over the years the pavers have been uncovered under the pavement of various Vancouver streets including a large stretch around the Urban Winery in Railtown, East Georgia, Dunlevy, Union, and now Railway. Upon Gunn’s discovery three years ago, he dug up a news item from the Vancouver Daily World, dated Nov. 12, 1909, which pointed out wooden paving blocks were being stolen for fuel. “The police department have

Canadian Navigable Waters Act Blue Water Systems Ltd. hereby gives notice that an application has been made to the Minister of Transport, pursuant to the Canadian Navigable Waters Act for approval of the work described herein and its site and plans.

HODGSON, Dorene Elizabeth It’s with a heavy heart that we announce the death of our mother Dorene Elizabeth Hodgson on June 29, 2021, just shortly after her 94th birthday, in Vancouver, BC.

Dorene was born in Melfort, Saskatchewan on June 14, 1927, and moved to Vancouver in 1947 with her mother, Mary Catherine Malkowicz.

Dorene is survived by her daughter, Christine Newell, and son, James Turner, two wonderful grandchildren, Roy Turner and Adina Turner (Chris Fahr), and one sweet great grandchild, Texas Mackie-Turner. She has three surviving nieces, Patricia Phillips and Teresa Pidskalny who live in Manitoba, and Lynn Robinson who resides in Ontario. Dorene worked as a secretary and bookkeeper for several established businesses in Vancouver and retired in 1985. She adored the arts, music, and nature. She sang in choirs throughout her life, including the Vancouver Bach Choir. She enjoyed her local talk and classical music radio programs and personalities. Dorene was very active - ice skating till she was 88 years old and walking the local gardens and parks she loved. Dorene was an active donor to many charities and wished for those who would like to celebrate her life, to give memorial contributions to the charity of their choice.
