COLONIALISM SKATEBOARDS
New skateboard features Vancouver pro skater's Indian Residential School ID card
C
anada's Colonialism Skateboards has released another pro model board with Vancouver skateboarder, Joe Buffalo. Two, in fact. On the heels of his first pro model which featured Pitikwahanapiwiyin, otherwise known as Poundmaker, on the graphic, comes the board 'Residential School - ID Card'. It is based off of his actual card he had when he attended Lebret Residential School in Lebret,

Saskatchewan; the second d to last Indian Residential School to shut down in Canada, before Saskatchewan's Gordon’s School in Punnichy which closed in 1996. Vancouver artist Pamela Prostarr went off of a photograph of Joe's ID card to illustrate the graphic. As Joe tells the story on Instagram, "I dated a girl back in school then and when we left for the summer I gave her my school I.D and she gave me hers. She never ended up coming back. Twenty years later when it came
time i to apply l ffor my settlement l the government said that the records of me being in this place were destroyed mysteriously." At this point, he says he received a message from the woman on social media, and she sent him a photo of the ID, which ultimately ended up being lost in a fire. But it was enough to allow Joe his settlement from the federal government, and also "a huge chunk of history that I’ll never ever forget." The second Joe Buffalo pro

ne of Vancouver's most famous dogs, Momo, has passed away, according to his owner and best friend, Andrew Knapp. Momo rose to stardom years ago as Knapp, a professional photographer, begun sharing fun photos under the #findmomo hashtag, building up a following of over 600,000 people on Instagram (@andrewknapp and @ momosface). The border collie liked to hide/pose while Andrew shot photos of scenes. It was a bit like a Where's Waldo scenario where you'd have to find the dog hidden somewhere in the photograph. His antics and travels ended up being the subject of five books. The two traveled the world together, and both became beloved characters on many people's social media feeds. Momo for his unbearable cuteness and Andrew for his philosophizing and the way he exposed his humanity and asked questions of himself, and his followers. Momo had health issues as he aged, and according to a post by Knapp on Instagram, the dog's struggles "become unjustifiable and irreversible," and that ultimately "his quality of life is no longer there, and I had to make the best decision for

Knapp went on to say that he and Momo embarked on their last road trip together, as the two drove to a friend’s farm near Ottawa where he was able to celebrate his life with some close friends and let him pass on with help from "a reputable and compassionate in-home end-of-life care provider." Knapp, ever insightful, wrote that he "still can’t believe he’s gone. But

V.I.A. cartoonist starts new Vancouver video game studio
T
here are lots of things to know about Geoff Coates, but here are just two: he’s the one who creates the hilarious cartoons you see featured on Vancouver Is Awesome, and he just launched a brand new video game studio here in Vancouver. A 26-year veteran of the games industry in Vancouver, Coates and two of his friends launched Timbre Games on July 13. Timbre, a Pipeworks Studio and the newest member of the Sumo Group,
is so named for its West Coast roots and the musical quality of distinctiveness. Coates is the studio’s creative director while Joe Nickolls and Zoë Curnoe serve as the president and production director respectively. As one of its founding members, Coates says the studio came together largely because of the people involved. Coates worked with Nickolls at the late Capcom Vancouver and had previously worked with Curnoe at EA years
before. It is the people and the experience they bring that will help Timbre create very different and unique games Coates says, drawing on the best experiences and lessons from their collective past. "There are a lot of different experiences that most games haven't touched or covered and I think there are new types of experiences that may draw in people who don't necessarily play games,” Coates said of what games Timbre is looking at creating, adding there are some

gameplay mechanics he would like to experiment with. Coates says in most multiplayer games the objective is to make yourself better to the detriment of other players via killing or looting them for resources. "I think one of the things we talked about was what if you had something where you supported everybody around you? What if there was more of a thing where making people around you better or improving the people around you
is how you get better in the game," Coates said. There couldn’t be a better time to start a game studio either Coates says, describing a video game boom that took place over the last year due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. As for what is next for the studio, Coates says there are many games in the works and the team will be “hitting the ground running.” By Cameron Thomson
Call the Roofing Experts at Absolute Roof Solutions
Hi, I'm Ken Lillejord, Absolute Roof Solutions roofing consultant for the residential division. I take care of big houses, little houses, medium houses, and stratas. I've been in the roofing industry for 40 years and have trained roofers how to put on various roofing systems. I've also built and renovated houses, doing my own roofing and helping my friends do theirs. So I know a few things about the kind of roof you need here in Vancouver. Did you know the type of roofing you choose can add tremendous value to your home? Or that the average residential roof can have over 8,000 parts and if just one of those parts is installed improperly, like a flashing not caulked correctly or a roof vent wrongly placed, future roof problems are almost assured? My job as a roofing consultant is to build you a scope of work based on your goals and get you the roof you need, built professionally and properly by our roofing professionals. All work is guaranteed. Call me for a quote on your roofing needs.

The 8 types of prospects a team picks at the NHL Entry Draft
DAN TOULGOET
odds are better that he never makes the NHL. The really tall defenceman — Is he good at hockey? Maybe. But he sure is tall. Scouting reports praise him for his reach because with his long arms and old growth cedar tree of a hockey stick, he can pokecheck an opponent from a neighbouring postal code. If this guy is described as “a good skater,” you’re probably fine. If he’s described as “a good skater for his size,”
T
he 2021 NHL Entry Draft is this Friday and Saturday, which means Canucks fans are about to care deeply about a group of teenagers they’ve never heard of before this weekend.
Fortunately, the prospects picked in the draft tend to fall into some typical categories, which can help keep things straight on draft day. The power forward (in junior) — This guy is a beast, who manhandles other players to get to the front of the net. He looks like a man amongst boys, partly because he has a 5 o’clock shadow by 10 AM. The only issue is that he’s average size for an NHLer and once he loses the size advantage that allows him to bully teenagers, his lack of other redeeming qualities will become apparent. The mysterious European — Taken late in the draft, no one has seen this guy play. The internet says he spent last season in a second-tier Czech men’s league, but doesn’t specify whether he’s
a winger or a centre — it just says “forward.” Eventually you find a YouTube video of him scoring a goal and latch onto it as proof that he’ll score 50 goals in the NHL someday. The “questionable skating” guy — This prospect almost has it all: hands, shot, and hockey sense. There’s just one problem: he can’t skate. You start to wonder if he gets into battles for the puck just so he can hold onto the boards so he doesn’t fall over. But he can get better. He’s been working with a power skating coach. It’s probably fine. The little guy — He should have been selected a dozen picks earlier based on how many goals he scored in junior but he slid in the draft because he’s three apples high and a stiff breeze can knock him over. This guy is always fun because he has a ton of skill and you can imagine that he might become the next Alex DeBrincat or Nils Höglander even if the

you’re in trouble. The future captain — Great character, good in the room, natural-born leader. He’s worn a “C” for his team since he was six and has as many community service awards as hockey trophies. He probably plays centre and is a two-way forward, who wins faceoffs, kills penalties, and scores clutch goals in the playoffs. He’ll make a great captain for your team’s AHL affiliate some day.
The sure thing — A can’tmiss prospect — a bluechipper. It’s blatantly obvious that he has a bright future ahead of him and he’s sure to be a star for your team. At least, he would be if your team selected him. Instead, they picked... The guy taken one pick before the sure thing — It was so obvious who your team should have picked and instead they took him? For example, the Boston

Bruins had three-straight picks in the middle of the first round in 2015 with Mathew Barzal still on the board and picked three players who were not Mathew Barzal. This can work out, of course. 'The hospital was a war zone': paramedic speaks out on conditions during B.C. heat wave

keep cool. For one Metro Vancouver paramedic, the night of Monday, June 28 was spent working. "I don't think any of us who showed up [that day] could have predicted just how horrific it was," says Frank. (V.I.A. has agreed not to identify him as paramedics aren't allowed to speak publicly about their work.) While people knew the heatwave was coming, Frank says there wasn't any extra planning from BCEHS management to prepare for what was being forecast. He says they got one email. "It was an email suggesting and giving some tips on how to stay cool between calls," he says. "The kind of things that if you didn't already know you shouldn't be a paramedic." The scenes he describes to Vancouver Is Awesome in great detail are chaotic and

One scene he describes is of Surrey Memorial Hospital, where he was taking some patients, and where the situation was dire. "There were nurses crying, there were paramedics collapsing," he says. Free hard drugs handed out at police station
A
dvocates for a safe supply of drugs handed out quantities of heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine outside the Vancouver Police Department last Wednesday, July 14. City Councillor Jean Swanson, along with members of the Drug User Liberation Front (DULF) and the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU), distributed the free drugs outside the Vancouver Police Department in the DTES. The collective action was meant to demonstrate the "life-saving potential of a community-led response to the crisis of prohibition in Canada" as an alternative to Vancouver's proposed model of decriminalization, explains a news release. The drugs that were handed out were tested via "FTIR spectrometry and immunoassay, and are free of fentanyl, fentanyl analogues, benzodiazepines, and other harmful adulterants." Jeremy Kalicum, DULF organizer, tells Vancouver
COUNCILLOR JEAN SWANSON
A10 VANCOUVE R
Is Awesome that “the crisis is unbearable and it is ridiculous that we have to put ourselves at risk to move forward with a commonsense harm reduction principle.” The group spent roughly $3,000 on drugs and
distributed them among four groups. "We gave out more than the proposed threshold limit that's in Vancouver's proposed model. "We gave three-and-a-half grams of each drug." Kalicum says the funds for
the drugs were raised on DULF's online fundraising platform and distributed to VANDU, Tenant Overdose Response Organizers, Western Aboriginal Harm Reduction Society and Coalition of Peers Dismantling the Drug War. "Each group got ten-and-half grams of drugs total." The group aims to raise awareness of what they call "deeply flawed aspects of the Vancouver Model of decriminalization," which includes the "disproportionate influence of the Vancouver Police Department, unreasonably low drug thresholds, and lack of provisions for safe supply." Additionally, the group underscores that the proposed model risks causing "significant harm" to people who use drugs, especially those at intersecting marginalized social locations, such as people experiencing homelessness, BIPOC, and those from the LGBTQ2S* community. No arrests were made as the group distributed the drugs. By Elana Shepert

Burrard SkyTrain Station closing for two years for upgrades
P
ublic transit users in downtown Vancouver who use Burrard SkyTrain Station will find themselves adjusting their routes for about two years starting in early 2022. TransLink announced last week that the transit agency is going ahead with a "major upgrade" plan for the 36-yearold station. To facilitate the upgrades, Burrard Station will be closed down completely for approximately two years. The closure is necessary "to allow the work to be done safely and more efficiently than were it to remain partially open during construction," explains
TransLink in a media release. Burrard Station was one of 15 original stations built and opened as part of SkyTrain's Expo Phase I, which ran from Waterfront to New Westminster. Constructed in 1985 and opened in January 1986, Burrard SkyTrain Station "has not had a significant upgrade in its 36 years of operation," says TransLink, noting currently it is "the fourth busiest station on the SkyTrain system."
Citing hard-to-access station entrances and congestion at peak times, TransLink is planning the following upgrades that will:
• Double the number of escalators and elevators to provide greater accessibility and relieve congestion on platforms and at the concourse level; • Relocate the Burrard Street entrance to align with the pedestrian crossing making it easier to get in and out of the station, and provide better access to buses along Dunsmuir; • Redesign the station’s outdoor plaza to put pedestrian needs at the forefront • Upgrade the station’s power supply and mechanical systems. “These significant upgrades are necessary to keep our transit system operating effectively and efficiently for

our customers,” said TransLink Interim CEO Gigi ChenKuo. “With more than 7.6 million annual boardings in 2019, Burrard Station is the fourth busiest station on our SkyTrain network. These upgrades will greatly improve the customer experience and as the region prepares to welcome one million new residents by the year 2050, this important project allows us to be prepared for additional future demand.” TransLink says closing the station for two years will save $35 million. The transit agency will be working with the City of Vancouver, and local businesses and residents "to minimize impacts" during the upgrades. To accommodate Burrard Station riders, TransLink will have SkyTrain customers use Waterfront and Granville stations, and will also implement additional bus service in the area to help move passengers. Street in Kitsilano named after racist politician to be renamed
C
ity council has voted to rename Trutch Street. The street is named after Joseph Trutch, the first lieutenant governor of the province of British Columbia. He was also a racist, calling First Nations people on the west coast of North America "the ugliest and laziest creatures I ever saw" and "utter savages" among other things. In addition, as lieutenant governor, he rewrote documents to significantly reduce the size of reserves, among other racist policies. Trutch Street is located in Kitsilano, running from West 1 Avenue to West 18 Avenue. The Musqueam Indian Band will choose the new name. They've also brought up the fact the street is named after Trutch before with the city. The motion was brought forward by Mayor Kennedy Stewart and states that as Vancouver became a "City of Reconciliation" and promised to review the city's colonial and racist past, the change was due. During the discussion on the topic during the July 8 council meeting, Kim Sicoli of Women Transforming Cities noted that street names represent the values of a society. "This is not the only street or public space in Vancouver named after someone who promoted colonial, racist and sexist harm, but we hope this will be precedent-setting for other harmful colonial legacies," she said. During the meeting, Stewart noted he's also spoken with the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations about similar situations. "It's not about removing people's history, it's about choosing who we celebrate," he said. Council passed the motion unanimously. By Brendan Kergin

new grassroots neighbourhood initiative is bringing food security to East Vancouver. The Local Open Access Fridge (LOAF) pilot project is now open at 2297 East Hastings St and Garden Drive (outside Dachi restaurant). The installation is a barrier-free community resource that houses a fridge, freezer, and pantry. It's stocked with assorted edibles, feminine and baby products, plus various toiletries. The project is aimed at providing safe storage for perishable and nutritious food items such as fruits and vegetables, which aren't generally accepted for donation by local food banks. Residents are even encouraged to stock it with produce from their own gardens. "We can't have any raw meat due to food safety concerns and we can't have anything that's been homecooked," explains organizer Rebecca Matzov. Access is available every day from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. to any member of the public, regardless of income, living situation, status, or background. "In the City of Vancouver, about a fifth of the population faces food insecurity and the population ranges. It's from the houseless population up into the lower middle class; it's not restricted to people who don't have a house to go to," says Matzov. Volunteers clean the fridge daily while checking for expired food and maintaining the structure. The Hastings-Sunrise LOAF joins several other community fridges in the city. The team behind it hopes to set up more locally in the future. "We're going to forge forward and get our KCC [Kensington-Cedar Cottage] location up. There's already someone working in Kitsilano to do a fridge project like this. That's what we're hoping but we want to tackle one thing at a time." By Thor Diakow
Meet the birds of prey patrolling Granville Island
I
t wouldn't be Granville Island without the iconic squawk of the gull. Unfortunately, these birds are a bit of a nuisance to humans. Gulls at the popular destination are habituated to people's food and have become a rather pesky problem. That's where The Raptors swoop in. The Vancouver Islandbased group educates the public on birds of prey and offers wildlife management services. Over the years, raptors have proven effective and efficient at taking care of problem bird populations. They aren't meant to hunt the birds, just scare them away. "If I hang out with her on the glove, near people that are having lunch, they'll generally give them their distance. But we do sometimes fly around here as well. So having a hawk pop up to the roof is going to push those gulls even further back," explains the program's Sean Baynton. One of Granville Island's avian sentries is Avah, a Harris's Hawk native to the southwestern U.S. This particular species is perfectly suited for the task. "They are social in the wild, so they're generally pretty social with people as well. They form strong bonds and they're very cooperative," says Baynton. The group works seasonally but the summer months are busiest, when throngs
of visitors enjoy their food outside. That's when the opportunistic gulls try to steal a snack. Signage outside the public market also discourages people from feeding the birds. It's not uncommon for The Raptors representatives to attract a crowd of curious onlookers. Baynton says it's all part of their work. "Usually they're surprised that we're not here to put on a show or do some sort of fancy 'flying through hoops' demonstration. They're often a little shocked to find out that wildlife management is our main priority." So next time you see a beautiful bird of prey patrolling Granville Island just remember, they have an important job to do.
on a map corresponding to the business or location indicated in the letter. The works of art themselves will also be displayed at the corresponding location around the city. Laura Barron, the founder and executive director of Instruments of Change says the idea is to create many dots across the map of Vancouver to represent an "infection" of gratitude. “This initiative is intended to spread gratitude instead of fear, as we emerge from this collectively challenging time, more hopeful and connected,” the non-profit wrote in a recent release. Here is the schedule, times, and locations for each of the three upcoming events: Monday, July 26, 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. Second Beach Tuesday, August 3, 3 p.m. - 8 p.m. Locarno Beach Thursday, August 5, 4 p.m. 9 p.m. David Lam Park The pop-up booths will be set up weekly with social distancing measures employed. Vancouver-based non-profit is putting on a series of events to help locals express gratitude for the businesses and spaces the city has to offer. Instruments of Change is offering Vancouverites the chance to participate in several “pop-up shout-outs” in the organization’s Infectious Gratitude initiative. At the events, participants will be asked what they would like to see thrive in their community, a question designed to get them thinking of what business or space they hope will survive and thrive moving forward from the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Participants will then create one of three ways to express their gratitude. They can either write a short thank you letter, form that letter into a Haiku poem, or create a thank you drawing. Their work will then be added to a watercolour background they would also have a hand in making. The complete piece of art will then be digitized to be displayed

VRDOLJAK, Ana January 17, 1932 - July 9, 2021 Ana (Antonia) passed away peacefully at home on July 9, 2021, at the age of 89. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Ivo, and leaves behind her devoted son Peter, nieces and nephews in the Lower Mainland, and siblings and other family members in Europe. Ana was born in Slovenia in 1932, immigrating to Canada in 1955 to build a new life with her husband and young son. They settled in Mount Pleasant and moved to Kerrisdale in 1975, where she remained until her passing. She spent her working life in the hospitality industry, serving in many of the city’s finer hotels and restaurants. Her attentive and courteous manner, as well as her fluency in five languages (English, German, Slovenian, Croatian, and Russian), made her an asset to management and customers alike. In Ana’s later years, wanting to be closer to home, she worked at a Kerrisdale bakery. Her 40+ years in “the hood” made her instantly recognizable, whether tending her flower beds, going on power walks, working out at the community centre, working at the bakery, or shopping on 41st, there was always a wave and a chat for her neighbours. While she’s not been mobile for some years, people still stop her son to ask about her. Always the beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and friend, Ana will be missed by many. Funeral Mass: Thursday, July 22, 2021, 10:00 AM, Immaculate Heart of Mary Croatian Church, 3105 E 1st Avenue, Vancouver. Interment to follow: Ocean View Burial Park, 4000 Imperial Street, Burnaby. Peter wishes to extend his admiration and gratitude to his mother’s caregivers (Karen, and especially Lebi) for their respectful support and care of Mom.
