t's not often you spot a turtle in Stanley Park, as the resident reptiles know how to blend in. It's even less common to see one of the petite critters away from the water — and it's somewhat concerning, too. Vancouverite Wendy WellerDavies tells Vancouver Is Awesome that she was concerned that a small creature she saw in the park was out of its element in the scorching heat. "The turtle was by the pedestrian path some way from Lost Lagoon, and was digging a hole with her hind feet while appearing to pee in it," she writes in an email. "She was in the scorching sun and we were concerned for her well-being. So we asked some Park rangers near Second Beach what should be done with / for her." The park rangers told WellerDavies that the turtle was an invasive species and that they'd go along and take a look. However, she wasn't sure what happened to the turtle

Mostly held outdoors this year to abide by coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions, all your fair favourites will be available to enjoy, including live music. “We will definitely be having live music; it will just look a little different this year,” said Shelley Frost, the PNE’s President and CEO. “We will not have large, seated concerts in the usual Amphitheatre, but we will have a concert stage in the Revel District with music from local BC Artists throughout the day for all guests to enjoy at no cost.” This year, in the interest of safety for Fairgoers, the PNE will not have a paid seated venue set up. A stage at the Revel District will be programmed all day long and fairgoers can grab food or beverage and sit in a festival style, distanced location of their choice to take in the performances. Supporting B.C. talent is a mandate that has never been more important than as the creative sector emerges from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, a recent statement from the PNE reads. Patrick Roberge, the PNE’s Creative Director says music at the fair is a tradition that dates back to when the fair first started in 1910 and remains so to this day. “In 2021, when artists from across British Columbia and Canada have been devastated by the inability to perform live throughout the COVID pandemic, we committed

to supporting these local performers at this year’s Fair,” Roberge said.

V

ancouver's Punjabi Market is now home to some dazzling new works of art. The Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective (PMRC) has partnered with the Vancouver Mural Festival to bring Murals in the Market to Main Street. The community initiative aims to help facilitate storytelling through public art. Four massive murals can be found in several laneways near Main Street between 49th and 51st Avenue. The PMRC is collaborating with local BIPOC artists to bring more foot traffic to the market. Creative director Jag Nagra hopes the event will continue to grow each year. "When we were planning there were lots of COVID restrictions still in place. So for 2022, we're hoping to do more of a street activation, get the community here in person to see them. We're hoping to bring in murals every r year; hopefu f lly, in two or three years there's 10, 15 murals." Nagra's group is comprised of artists, advocates, and entrepreneu urs who are revitalizing the historic part r of South Vancouver by beautifying the area and creating a destination for local art r s and cultu t re. Founded in 1970, Vancouver’s Punjabi Market was the first of itss ki k nd in Nort r h Am America. Despite its humble beginnings, the neighbourhood has since transformed into a cultu t ral hub. Vancouver firefighters save dog found at house fire

Meet Vancouver's mother and son medical duo

F

ollowing in your parent's footsteps can be rare, but for one Vancouver mother and son, it seemed inevitable. Dederique "Dee" Nap has been a registered nurse (RN R ) for over 30 years. She specializes in gastroenterology g , a medical area commonly as associated with digestive disorders. Her son is Dr. Estello Nap Hill, a medical doctor and internal medicine resident with UBC. Hill was raised by his single mom in Ri R chmond. Following high school graduation, he attended McGill University t thanks to a football scholarship. While he never dreamed of entering g the same

profession as his mom, Hill seemed destined to become a doctor. "I fell out of love with football and I wanted to challenge myself lf and I wanted to pick something that I kn k ew would ki k nd of reach my fu f ll potential," he explains. Hill graduated from university t at the height of COVID-19; it's an experience he will never forget. "Graduating med school during a pandemic was a once-in-a-lifetime opport rtunity t because I think that it put so much extra stress on an already stressfu f l and intense time and situ t ation," says Hill. His mother worked as an

RN during another famous R health crisis — the SAR A S outbreak of the early 2000s. The dynamic duo recently worked a shift together and even cared for the same patient. For Nap, feeling proud of her son is an understatement. "It's like a dream come tru rue to have him do something that he enjoys, that he gives back to his community t, that he gives of himself lf for others. I can't be prouder of him," she explains. The pair is ultimately gratefu f l to be in such a cru r cial field, especially given the light shone on frontline healthcare workers during the pandemic. Byy Thor Diakow

house fire can be a deadly situation for a pet, but recently, despite dire circumstances, a sevenmonth-old black lab will pull through thanks to the fast action of firefighters. The puppy was home in South Vancouver when a fire broke out. Vancouver Fire Rescue Services (VFRS) were called to the fire at 1268 East 60 Ave, according to Assistant Chief Kenny Gemmill. The first crew that arrived set up to attack the fire and the second went into the basement and found the fire, Gemmill says. They were able to knock it down quickly, and found the severely injured puppy nearby. "They pulled the puppy out and immediately gave him supplemental oxygen," he says. "We prepare for animals we have to rescue sometimes." The crews had specialized oxygen masks for pets and were able to get it on the motionless dog. A video shared by the firefighters' union on Twitter shows the rescue. They worked on the dog for "T about 45 minutes until the dog owner thought it was in good enough shape to take to vet," says Gemmill.

Along with smoke inhalation, the young dog was suffering from a badly burned leg and was overheated after being so close to the fire for so long. Firefighters cleaned the wound and kept the dog cool with cold water. While the puppy had a rough 24 hours, Gemmill says the owner let the firefighters know he was pulling through. "The owner was there to watch and was very thankful," he adds. VFRS Chief Karen Fry also expressed her thanks, via Twitter. "This is an amazing story r. Our @VanFireRescue crews (B shift halls #17 & #5) found this pup in the fire unit.

While he did suffer a minor burn and smoke inhalation we hear that he’s doing well!" she wrote on Twitter. No one else was injured in the fire. Gemmill says structure fires are always a serious situation, and for pets they pose a particular danger. While humans understand the need to evacuate immediately, that's not always the case for animals. "They don't always know to leave the fire or not," he explains. Luckily the fire department quip pped with gear to help p is eq animals if they find them in time. By Brendan Kergin

Man charged in anti-Asian hate crimes finally appears before judge A 47-year-old man charged in relation to hateful graffiti on the Chinese Cultural Centre has appeared before a judge – four months after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Yves Castonguay faces two charges – one for public incitement of hatred and one count of mischief to property, according to the Vancouver Police Department (VPD) after the Chinese Cultural Centre in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside was vandalized during the afternoon of April 2, 2020. Racist language about the Asian community was written on the centre’s windows. Castonguay was charged March 30 but didn’t show up for his subsequent court date.

B.C. Prosecution Service spokesman Dan McLaughlin said Castonguay’s case was on the Prince George court list for a video pre-trial conference. “The judge assigned the conference is sitting in Prince George so the hearing is notionally there but it is being held virtually by video,” McLaughlin said. “The accused is not in custody. He has other charges pending relating to breaches of other orders but none related to this file.” At the time of the offence, Vancouver Police had seen a 717% increase in crimes with an element of hate, bias, and prejudice, with people of East Asian descent being the primary targets.

Police said a criminal charge for public incitement of hatred is a serious, specific charge that is rarely used. By Jeremy Hainsworth

I can't go and maybe help the person one-on-one, but I can support people who are skilled in doing that," explains Yard. They combined their respective skills and created some unique clothing. The SERIES collection is a small-batch apparel line that includes hoodies, t-shirts, plus satchel and tote bags. Fifteen per cent of sales

from each item in the SERIES line is donated to the Downtown Eastside Women's Centre. Just a few weeks into the fundraising campaign, local response has already been strong. "We did over $1,000 in our first day on our launch weekend that we were able to donate," says Yard. The team of two hopes their venture will inspire other small businesses to help the community in similar ways. By Thor Diakow

Disney launching animation studio in Vancouver Animation on a new slate of projects for Disney+ starting with Moana,” Amir Nasrabadi, the head of Walt Disney Animation Studio, Vancouver, said in last Wednesday’s announcement. “I continue to be amazed at the high level of artistry and technical advancements coming out of the animation industry here in Vancouver and I am so proud to be a part of this community. This is really a dream come true for me.” Nasrabadi previously served

for two years as WildBrain’s executive vice-president and general manager of its office in Vancouver’s Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. Prior to that, he also held roles at Walt Disney Studios and Pixar Animation Studios, serving as the vice-president and general manager of Pixar Canada. The new studio in Vancouver will focus on long-form series work, such as the aforementioned Moana title, as well as other projects for the Disney+ streaming

service. But story development, storyboarding and production design for Disney’s projects will continue to be based out of California, where more than 900 of the company’s animation workers are based. “With Burbank and Vancouver both home to some of the world’s most talented artists and technicians, we believe the storytelling and visual quality created within each location will meet the incredibly

A

program trying to connect people through art will be running until mid-September in Andy Livingstone Park. The park, located at 89 Expo Blvd., sits on the edge of the Downtown Eastside, adjacent to high-rise condo towers and an elementary school. The Our Park Project aims at bringing the diverse communities together with art as the common ground. Free arts gatherings focusing on things like drawing and screen printing are held twice a week to bring people together. "We aim to engage, build connection, foster care and safety, and bridge the diverse communities who use Andy Livingstone Park by engaging individuals in community-based art events," state the organizers on their Facebook page. De-stigmatizing perceptions in the community and connecting residents who use the park is a developing issue, as the area has seen a lot of change in the last five years. "As one of the only accessible open green spaces in the Downtown East Side of Vancouver, it is also a place where drinking and drug use happens, and the impacts of the overdose crisis are keenly felt," reads a press release. "Our Park is welcoming to people who use drugs, are precariously housed, local

residents and workers, school families, and communitybased organizations." Leading the project is Les Nelson, the Carnegie Community Centre's first Elder in Residence, along with artist Sylvan Hamburger. Supporting the project are the Western Aboriginal Harm Reduction Society (WAHRS), the Vancouver parks board, the City of Vancouver and Vancouver Coastal Health. It's funded through the Community Action Initiative. It's guided by local volunteers. "Elder Les and Sylvan will work closely with the Western Aboriginal Harm Reduction Outreach Team to provide harm reduction supplies, food, hydration and community connection as folks make art together," states the release. "This ‘harm reduction through the arts’ initiative aims to reduce stigma related to substance use and to support connection and resilience in the communities that use Andy Livingstone Park." Starting back in July, the project has had arts events in the park, including screen printing and drawing. All events are free to the public. They'll continue every Wednesday and Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. until Sept. 12. As time goes on, more art will be added to the park. By Brendan Kergin

conic Stanley Park tourist attraction the Vancouver Aquarium has hired close to 100 new employees and is set to reopen later this month, new executive director Clint Wright tells Glacier Media. He has not yet set the launch date and operating hours, but exhibits, such as sea lions, sea otters, fish tanks, and an Amazon tropical gallery with snakes, will be on display, he said. Wright said that he expected to make an official announcement soon. The COVID-19 pandemic forced the facility to shut in March, 2020. It reopened several months later but announced in late August that it would indefinitely close its doors to the public on Sept. 7. The specter of potential insolvency swirled while executives sought government support, and marketed the aquarium's

business to potential privatecompany acquirers. U.S.-based tourism and entertainment company Herschend Enterprises bought the aquarium for an undisclosed amount in April. The company also owns theme parks, such as Dolly Parton’s Dollywood and the Harlem Globetrotters. It also

owns two other aquariums: the Newport Aquarium in Kentucky and the Adventure Aquarium in New Jersey. Herschend Enterprises made some executive changes. "Ocean Wise, the global conservation organization has separated from Vancouver Aquarium," said Wright.

Former Vancouver Aquarium CEO Lasse Gustavsson previously also headed Ocean Wise. Gustavsson remains as Ocean Wise's president and CEO, but Ocean Wise is no longer based at the aquarium, said Wright, who was previously the Vancouver Aquarium's COO. The aquarium in September

laid off more than 200 people, but Wright said the organization was able to keep "just under 100 people" on site to take care of animals and perform other tasks. Its recent hiring blitz stemmed from a July 24 job fair that saw about 80 attendees sent home with job offers, Wright said. "We're very close to being fully staffed," he said. "We still need a few line cooks, but otherwise I think we're very well staffed." Initial site capacity will depend on how many galleries are open, but it could be more than 1,000 people. "We'll start slowly and see how it goes," he said. Adult admission tickets are expected to be about $40, which would be similar to what they were prepandemic. Since Herschend Enterprises took over, and added more

certainty to the organization, Wright's team has been focused on increasing site maintenance. "With the loss of cetaceans, with legal action, with deciding what to do, and then COVID-19 on top of that, a lot of maintenance got deferred," he said. "Herschend have really been putting resources in to get a lot of that deferred maintenance taken care of." Wright would not hazard a guess for when the attraction could break even, much less be profitable. "We've been burning money since we were closed in September, and that continues," he said. "In fact, it's going at an upped pace right now because we're getting ready to be open. So we're hiring lots more people. We're doing lots of repairs, we're enhancing the exhibits." By Glen Korstrom

Rare B.C. 'corpse flower' set to unfurl its putrid beauty and Recreation in a press release. In B.C., the flower is first thought to have bloomed in 2018 at the Bloedel Conservatory, and for some, it can take a decade to emerge again. “We are so excited to bring Uncle Fester back to Bloedel Conservatory, and can’t wait to have the public join us in experiencing the pungent scent explosion that, once smelled, is hard to forget,” said superintendent Bruce McDonald in a written statement.

rare though putrid flower dubbed “Uncle Fester” is set to bloom at the Bloedel Conservatory. Known as a “corpse flower,” the tropical amorphophallus titanum climbs up to 15 feet tall as it reaches for the sun. For much of the year, the vulnerable species produces leafy vegetation to scratch its photosynthesis needs. But some years, an “enormous flower spike — or spadix — will emerge,” notes a spokesperson for the Vancouver Board of Parks

The conservatory’s specimen — considered “vulnerable” and native to Indonesia’s equatorial rainforests on the

island of Sumatra — is now nine years old. The plant was first “discovered” by Italian

botanist Odoardo Beccari in 1889. But it was only in recent years, after a push to preserve the species, that

public gardens successfully raised a corpse flower in cultivation, according to the Chicago Botanic Garden. Back in Vancouver, Uncle Fester is in the midst of a growth spurt. It’s climbed two feet in the past month, and is expected to continue to grow at a rate of three inches per day until it blooms. This year’s flower is expected to eclipse the nearly twometre bloom recorded in 2018. When the flower will unfurl its putrid beauty is another question. Visitors to the conservatory looking to catch a glimpse of the rancid bloom must book a time slot online at bloedelconservatory.ca. By Stefan Labbé

PROVINCE OF B.C.

I

t’s no secret that Vancouverites are great, but the number of locals who received the province’s top honour only serves to solidify that fact. Last week, 16 exceptional people were appointed to the Order of British Columbia by Lt. Gov. Janet Austin. Among them was B.C.’s provincial health officer, Dr. Bonnie Henry from Victoria, Dr. Debra Braithwaite also of Victoria, Chief Joe Alphonse of the Tsilhqot’in Nation, Brenda Baptiste of Osoyoos and Andrew Petter, CM, QC, of Victoria. The other 11 recipients are all from Metro Vancouver. The bios for each recipient have been shortened in the interest of brevity. To read the full write-ups feel free to visit the Province of B.C.’s website.

Frances Belzberg Since arriving in B.C. over 40 years ago, Frances Belzberg has championed numerous causes, from health care and medical research to education and nurturing the next generation of Canadian leaders. Now in her mid90s, Frances’ commitment remains unwavering. In 1976, Belzberg co-founded the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation (DMRF), with the mission to advance research, promote awareness and support the well-being of those affected by the disease. Dr. Anthony Lang, OC, chair for Parkinson’s research at the University of Toronto explains that “[the] establishment of the DMRF essentially revolutionized the field” and that “Frances has been an active driver and supporter of the work of the foundation.” In the early 1990s, Belzberg was instrumental in the establishment of the Think

Ajay Dilawri Ajay and his brothers Kap and Tony are the founders of the Dilawri Group - the largest automotive group in Canada, with more than 4,000 employees and 76 automotive dealerships across Canada. With 24 dealerships in B.C. alone, he supports more than 2,000 employees and their families in his home province. His significant investment in electrical vehicle development is also helping address climate change and contributes to a greener economy. The Dilawri Foundation has donated tens of millions of dollars to help charitable causes in health care, mental health, education, autism, and public safety.

Carol A. Lee Carole Anne Lee is the chair of the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation, a registered charity she co-founded in 2011. The Chinatown Foundation is committed to the cultural, economic, and physical revitalization of Vancouver’s historic Chinatown. Projects Lee has spearheaded focus on creating a lasting positive impact such as affordable housing, seniors housing, and cultural and economic development. These initiatives include 58 West Hastings, a social housing project located in the Downtown Eastside that will provide 231 new homes and a 4,645 square-

metre (50,000-square foot) healthcare centre that will serve the entire community. During COVID-19, under her leadership, the Vancouver Chinatown Foundation launched an Economic Recovery program, which helped businesses apply for COVID-19 support programs by connecting businesses with financial institutions and government agencies.

James McEwen Jim McEwen, a B.C.based biomedical engineer, inventor, entrepreneur, philanthropist, mentor and volunteer, revolutionized one aspect of medicine through his invention of the automatic surgical tourniquet, a medical device that has significantly improved surgical safety, quality and efficiency around the world. An engineer and adjunct professor in UBC’s school of biomedical engineering, he has led and founded many successful companies and organizations. One of which is the Medical Device Development Centre, a notfor-profit that helps to create new medical technologies. The widespread adoption of McEwen’s tourniquet technologies has significantly improved surgical safety, quality and economy. The idea for an automatic tourniquet arose in the late 1970s after McEwen learned of a patient at Vancouver General Hospital who was injured by a conventional tourniquet during surgery. Four decades later, the tourniquets created by McEwen and his team have been used in more than 80 million surgical procedures worldwide — nearly 20,000 every day.

Dolph Schluter Dr. Dolph Schluter is the world’s foremost authority

on the role that ecology plays in the origin and divergence of new species. His work has fundamentally changed our understanding of evolution, revealing the ecological mechanisms driving speciation and probing the factors generating and maintaining biodiversity. Using stickleback fishes from B.C., Schluter gathered evidence to answer one of biology’s great mysteries: how genetic changes in one group of organisms can create an entirely new species. Schluter has also contributed his knowledge to help conserve freshwater fish in B.C., particularly by helping draft the recovery strategy for sticklebacks and co-developing guidelines to protect these and other endangered fishes in the province.

Dr. Poul Sorensen Dr. Poul Sorensen, a professor of pathology at the University of British Columbia, has dedicated his career to understanding the biological underpinnings of childhood cancers. His work has resulted in the discovery of many different genetic alterations in human cancers, most notably a novel type of genomic alteration which causes various childhood cancers. His discovery led to the development of new treatments for patients and on July 10, 2019, a drug developed using Sorensen’s research, was approved by Health Canada. Under the brand name VITRAKVI, the drug has already had a positive impact on Canadian patients. The mother of the boy with thyroid cancer describes the impact of Sorensen's work in a Sept 29, 2019 CBC article, “You have given us the

Triangular building proposed for property left vacant for at least a decade

TransLink says new app estimates number of available seats on the next bus

E

ver wonder if a bus is going to be crowded – especially when you want to try to stay away from others due to COVID-19? TransLink says it now has an app for that. “TransLink is launching a new feature in collaboration with Transit app, which allows customers to see the estimated number of seats remaining on board buses when planning their transit journey,” reads a news release. “As part of

TransLink’s Reconnect Campaign, the new feature will help customers feel confident knowing if there will be room on their vehicle before leaving home.” When customers plan their journey through the Transit app or check the real-time location of their bus, they will now notice a symbol indicating how many seats are likely to be available on board. Rating categories will let you know if there are usually many seats on board, some seats, or standing room

only on that bus at that time. These estimations are based on historical ridership data to provide the best possible prediction of how full the bus will be. This initiative is a result of the 2020 Open Call for Innovation. The team behind the Transit app were the successful applicant of the Open Call to make transit safer and more comfortable for customers. The Transit app can be downloaded on iPhone and Android smartphones.

proposed d building on Kingsway will bring 127 rental units to Joyce-Collingwood area. Designs submitted to the city show a six-storey triangular building at 2970 Kingsway, a triangular piece of property at the intersection with Rupert Street. It's been vacant for at least a decade, but was sold earlier this year according to B.C. Assessment. Along with new rental homes the building would have commercial retail space on the ground level and parking. There would also be communal areas on top, with bbq and dining areas, fire pits, and an area for dogs. Due to Kingsway's unusual diagonal path across the city, properties along the road often have unusual shapes. In this case, the architects have designed a triangular building to cover the maximum amount of land. "The proposal seeks to provide much needed

affordable Secured Market Rental housing aligned with the City of Vancouver's Housing and Homelessness strategy on a site which is well served by many transit options, as well as multiple parks, schools, amenities, and commercial retail, all within short walking distance," states the development team in the

rezoning application. "At present, the site is vacant and fenced, but it presents a unique opportunity to create an appropriate, yet dramatic, mixed-use building that integrates with the urban and community fabric in a responsive, liveable, and engaging manner." By Brendan Kergin

Seth Rogen responds to viral TikTok about his ‘kidnapping’

id Seth Rogen get kidnapped? It's a question you probably haven't asked yourself but one that has inspired a viral video on TikTok. If you've taken a scroll through any of Seth Rogen's social media of late, you've probably noticed a great deal of pottery — as well as pot. The famous cannabis connoisseur is a huge fan of handmade pottery, which he proudly showcases on his Twitter and Instagram accounts. But not everyone is convinced the hometown

funnyman is the one crafting the artistic pieces. TikTok creator Chris (chriscanbefunny on the social media platform) describes himself as a Los Angeles-based comedian and a "frequent faller." In his latest video, he explains the hypothesis behind Rogen's kidnapping. While he concedes that it would be possible for the Vancouverborn actor to make movies and sculpt pottery, he fears that a "shady ceramicist" has captured him. He says that in order to create the facade of normalcy, the smooth criminal makes regular posts on the star's

social media platforms. Chris wonders why people see so many "vases" and not any recent photos of his face. While he says the video is "very funny," Rogen adds that it is "not at all true. "I have not been kidnapped!" exclaims the actor in a Twitter post. "This is not a kidnapper writing this from Seth’s account! I promise!" While countless people picked up new hobbies to beat lockdown boredom or keep the pandemic blues at bay, moulding clay is something the Vancouverborn actor has long enjoyed.
