Exotic snack explosion continues with Dank Mart opening second location
BRENDAN KERGIN
BRENDAN KERGIN

C
elebrated snack shop Dank Mart has a new location along the popular shopping area of Robson Street. It's the brand's second location; the first opened last spring in Punjabi Market. And both are filled with bonkers snacks. While some products don't stick around too long, the current selection at 805 Thurlow St. (it used to be a RYU athletic wear store) has cake-in-a-jar, multiple basketball-themed cereals, and Baconator - (as in the Wendy's hamburger) flavoured Pringles. It's all very dank, according to all the signs around the store. But it's also a bright, light store with lots of colour. The store is a mix of full-on assault on the eyes and nostalgia for what kids thought adult life might bring. The cereal has cake in it, the cake mixes have Oreos in them, and the Oreos have
every flavour in them (though not all at once, yet). The store also has a couple of tributes to the brand's co-founder, Amin Shahin
Shakur, who was shot and killed last year. A 41-year-old man faces second-degree charges in the death. One unintentional item in the
store appears to be mothers taking their children to the store for candy and to pose at the store. In Vancouver Is Awesome's short visit at least four groups came in and did just that. "Do you love me more now?" asked one mom on the way out as her kid ingested some sugary treat. "A little," he replied. No word on if Dank Sedin has graced either store. This is at least the fourth store to open in the last 18 months to call itself an exotic snack bodega. There's the two Dank Marts, and in East Van there are now two Lucky's Bodegas (one on East Hastings opened late last year while a second opened this spring next to Duffin's Donuts).

Don't void your roof's warranty! Get it fixed. A lot of homeowners don't know that their roofs require regular maintenance. They think that once a new roof is installed, that is it. Nothing to do until it wears out in 25 or 30 years. After all, the shingles are guaranteed by the manufacturer for that long. Well, the fine print of the manufacturer's warranty has a statement about the warranty becoming void if "regular maintenance" on the roof is not done. What is "regular maintenance?" It is getting the roof inspected on a regular basis and rectifying minor issues before they become major problems that destroy the integrity of your roof and its materials. For instance, the majority of emergency calls we receive are about leaks that were caused by gutters becoming clogged and rainwater backing up into the soffit and then leaking down into the house. This could have been averted by regular maintenance. Moss growing on shingles and cedar shakes damages the roofing material. Its presence would immediately invalidate any manufacturer's warranty. Regular maintenance would include clearing away these buildups and growth. Don't let this happen to you. A regular inspection by one of our professionals will fix these minor problems now before they become major in the future and keep your warranty intact.

thought it was something I could do as a mom. I had a mentality that, as a mom, my sole focus should be to feed my kids, raise them right, and take care of my man," says Villegas. When her partner's abusive behaviour escalated, Villegas sought independence and began dedicating more time to her business. Through YouTube, she quickly learnt how to build a website using Shopify and applied basic social media management skills to drive traffic to her online store. Feedback from clients improved her understanding of customer needs and the communication helped her form a strong buyer-seller relationship. Some customers who Villegas had never met gave a shout-out to her on their blogs, and it all helped her grow. “I could earn some money and not worry about putting food on the table,” adds Villegas. Later Lidia was diagnosed with kidney infection, and when she found herself with no family support, she married her boyfriend, who she believed was the only person she cared about. Years later she realized his intention was to get married just to get citizenship.

Vancouver-based online jewellery business that started in 2017 is now selling products internationally, thanks to the power of the internet and social media. Lidia Villegas, founder of MS V Creations, can't hide her excitement while sharing the list of countries she now has clients in: “I was so happy when I mailed to Paris and Scotland, as these are the places that I have always wanted to visit. It was so exciting, and it kept me going,” says the 29-year-old mother of three. Villegas, who was a stay-athome mom before launching MS V Creations, started selling handmade jewellery to put food on the table after she noticed her partner becoming a heavy drinker. A few months later, she took a break from the business, as she needed to get out of her abusive relationship. “I have always wanted to do jewellery, but I never

with the car and passed racist comments. “I remember being in shock, that someone almost killed my mother because of the colour of her skin,” Villegas tearfully recalls. As a kid, Villegas had tried to run away from her house multiple times to save herself from her dad’s aggression. “Some of the Vancouver Police officers knew me as a runner, they would see me on

If the NHL won’t mandate vaccines, team-first hockey culture might do the trick players from American teams won’t be allowed into Canada. To encourage holdouts to get vaccinated, there’s a possibility that the NHL could hit the players in the wallets. If a player misses games in Canada because they’re unvaccinated and can’t cross the border, they likely wouldn’t get paid for those games. The NHL could also consider the hard line the NFL has taken, threatening lost salary and forfeited games if a COVID-19 outbreak among unvaccinated players causes games to be cancelled. As much as financial penalties might convince some players to get vaccinated, they might have more success with the carrot rather than the stick. The NHL could turn to an argument based in hockey culture: putting the team first.

month from now, the Vancouver Canucks will be at training camp in Abbotsford, preparing for the 2021-22 NHL season. The NHL is planning a full 82-game schedule and the Canucks are back in the Pacific Division with several American teams — the Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, San Jose Sharks, Vegas Golden Knights, and the latest addition, the Seattle Kraken. There’s just one issue: the U.S.-Canada border isn’t exactly fully open. Currently, only those who are fully vaccinated can cross the border into Canada but not all NHL players fall into that category. According to NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly in a report from The Athletic, over 85% of NHL players have been vaccinated so far. That’s higher than the percentage of eligible adults
who have been vaccinated in B.C. but still lower than the NHL would like with training camps opening next month. While the NHL has informed teams that staff interacting with players and hockey operations personnel need to be fully vaccinated, they are unlikely to make vaccines mandatory for their
players. That would need to be collectively bargained with the players’ union, the NHLPA, and no other major sports league in North America has done so. The NHL, however, has seven teams in Canada compared to just one for the NBA and MLB. They need to prepare for the very real possibility that unvaccinated
That doesn’t just mean putting the safety of the team’s health first by getting vaccinated and helping to protect your teammates from a global pandemic, though it certainly means that as well. But it also means that if you don’t get vaccinated, you’re not part of the team. Fully-vaccinated players are likely to have limited restrictions in the coming season. They’ll be able to train together and meet outside the rink, with no limits on social distancing. On the road, they’ll be able to get out of the hotel to eat dinner together and bond as a team. Unvaccinated players, however, are likely to have stricter rules and protocols in place. They might have to train separately from their teammates, wear a mask in the arena, and follow social distancing guidelines. On the road, restrictions could become even more severe,
particularly when travelling into Canada. Canada could allow unvaccinated players into the country with a “national interest exemption,” as they did for MLB and the Toronto Blue Jays. Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated players, however, faced a modified quarantine and were unable to leave their hotels or, in the case of Blue Jays players, their homes for 14 days after entering Canada except to go to the stadium. For NHL players who already endured a season of COVID protocols, that alone might be enough to convince the last holdouts. If not, the fear of letting the team down if they’re not allowed into Canada or cause a COVID-19 outbreak should do it. After all, in hockey it’s always the team over the individual. Environment Canada releases early fall forecast for Vancouver
H
otter-than-normal temperatures are expected to continue through the remainder of the season. In fact, Environment Canada warns that dry, warm weather may continue through the rest of summer and into the early fall, too.
Canada's national weather forecaster will release the official fall forecast on Sept.1, the first day of meteorological fall. However, Environment Canada Meteorologist Armel Castellan says there
are early indications that the toasty weather may continue into the coming season. The three-month output that was issued at the end of July for August, September, and October continues to show probabilities of warmerthan-normal temperatures, Castellan says. With this in mind, he cautions that precipitation is hard to predict further out and models are more accurate closer to the start of September. Are you dreading the
next heat wave in Metro Vancouver?
B.C. will see the same scorching daily highs that it did during the heat wave at the end of June. A heat dome forms when the jet stream migrates north, allowing an intense, highpressure system to create a cap over hot ocean air.
That kinda thing is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Let’s hope that doesn’t happen [again] for decades.
When that air descends, it warms. By trapping heat at the surface, the "dome" creates a feedback effect leading to sweltering conditions from day to night.

Cycling Vancouver: The Seymour Valley Trailway
J
ust like my own journey into cycling, this new weekly column is going to start with features on wellknown Metro Vancouver cycling destinations with dashes of food stops and interesting sights. Cycling can really open your eyes to your own city; Vancouver has so much to offer and I hope to share some of it with you. Where: Seymour Demonstration Forest (or more accurately the Seymour Valley Trailway), located in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve in
North Vancouver Why: A long winding stretch of well-paved path that is embraced on both sides by tall trees. You can escape both cars and harsh sunlight! The trail is friendly for all fitness levels of cyclists and all types of bikes. Difficulty: Though kind enough for all fitness levels, the terrain does feature elevation. There are gentle rollers that gradually descend to the end of the trailway, making it a climb back up. There are no sharp steep pitches; if you are worried about the effort, getting into an easier gear and taking it
slow and steady will allow you to finish the trail without difficulty. The path end to end is 10km, making it a 20km round trip if you opt to turn around and go back the way you came. If you are an adventurous and experienced rider, experts recommend taking Spur 4 route out, which is a hilly and challenging ride. How to get there: Most people drive up Lillooet Road and park at one of the lots near the beginning of the trailway. Unfortunately, there is no public transportation that gets you all the way up, but
you can get close via bus if you ride to the End of the Line General Store (4193 Lynn Valley Road) and bike your way to the trail. Alternatively, be ambitious
and ride up from Mt. Seymour Parkway to the head of the trailway. It is a steeper, more arduous method of getting there - but so much more rewarding!
Not Ready to Sit Back and Relax?
Important notes: 1 The park can get very busy. Please be mindful of your own safety and the safety of others as you enjoy the trail! 2 Conversely, the trail can be wonderfully empty of people. While serene, it is a long trailway and you should be prepared to deal with problems alone, such as mechanicals. Cell reception can be spotty at the very end of the trail; make sure someone always knows where you are. 3 In autumn, the combination of typical Vancouver rain and fallen pine needles can make the pathway treacherously slippery. Ride with caution.

OPINION
THURSDAY, AUGUST 19, 2021 VA NCOUVE R IS AW ES OM E
A safer drug supply is a regulated drug supply in the early 20th centu t ry r. Cannabis was a legalized in Canada in 2018. A d just last month, B.C. An introduced a new policy for prescribed safer supply. It’s a step in the right direction, but still not enough to tru ruly compete with organized crime. Unlike with alcohol and cannabis (and tobacco), prescribed safer supply would see people who use dru rugs access a regu gulated supply through the health care system. They would be assessed by a medical professional and then prescribed a small amount before going to a pharmacy to fill their prescription, a process that would be repeated regu gularly, even daily, for many people. Immediately, you can see the limitations of this approach. While people would finally k ow exactly what is in the kn dru rugs they’re consuming, having to see a doctor or a pharmacist every r day represents a huge barrier. Forget being able to go to work; instead, you’re tethered to the medical system on a daily basis. You would be prescribed a substance at your doctor’s discretion, which may or may not be the substance you want and need. An And that’s assuming you can even find a doctor willing to prescribe or have access to a doctor in the first place. For those who can’t or don’t, the unregu gulated market remains the only option. For those who can’t go to a pharmacy daily, the unregu gulated market remains the only option. People who use alcohol, cannabis, and tobacco have multiple pathways

to accessing a safe and regu gulated supply that’s specific to the substance and promotes public health and safety t . Someone who enjoys a glas ass of wine for dinner doesn’t have to go to their doctor for a prescription. Instead, they go to a liquor store or wine seller. If that wine consumption should become problematic?Well, that’s where a doctor comes in, who can focus on treatment and wellness for their patient, not doling out prescriptions for a bottle of Merlot. The same approach should be taken with opioids, stimulants, and other unregu gulated dru r gs. Instead of a prescriberbased approach, we should implement models that allow access to a regu gulated supply for those who are relying on the deadly unregu gulated supply. One such approach would be through establishing co-ops, also kn k own as a compassion clubs. People would be screened for eligibility t before being granted membership and fees could be based on a sliding scale, both to ensure equitable access regardless
of income and to make the approach self l -sustaining (e.g. no taxpayer dollars). The dru r gs available would be what people want and need, including heroin, at a dosing that’s appropriate for them. No more relying on an unregu gulated supply and wondering if their next fix is going to ki k ll them. Instead, they’l’l kn k ow exactly what they’re taki k ng, allowing them to use more safely. We look back at alcohol prohibition as a misgu guided and complete debacle. Futu t re generations will do the same when they look back on our current dru rug poisoning crisis. If substance use is the health issue that every r one says it is, then we’ve got to have multiple public health pathways to a safer supply. Until the dru rug supply is regu gulated, the only real option for the majority t of people who use dru rugs will remain the unregu gulated dru rug market. An A d we’ve long kn k own what that means. Have you or a loved one recently experienced a hip fracture? Researchers from the University of British Columbia and VGH Falls Prevention Clinic are inviting people who have experienced a fall-related hip fracture in the last 6 months to participate in a research study. This study aims to determine whether an exercise program can improve hip fracture recovery and falls prevention.

T
he dru rug supply is k lling people. ki This isn’t breaki k ng news. When the province of B.C. declared a public health emergency more than five years ago following a dramatic rise in overdose deaths, it shouldn’t have been breaki k ng news. For years – decades – we’ve k own that people who use kn unregu gulated dru r gs can die simply because we’ve made cert r ain dru r gs illegal. So how does this happen? A unregu An gulated dru rug supply chain controlled by gangs and organized crime, who are driven by profit motives to make dru rugs more powerf rfu f l and more toxi xic. It’s not just opioids. In the 1970s and 80s, cocaine became crack to increase concentration and, key to organized crime, maxi ximize profits. A d years before that, An thousands of people died as a result of alcohol poisoning under prohibition. Today, fentanyl has become the new heroin. What comes after fentanyl? In short rt, what’s ki k lling people is not kn k owing what they’re consuming. A unregu An gulated dru rug supply is a deadly dru rug supply. Banning dru rugs doesn’t stop people from using them, it just makes them more dangerous. What’s happening with our current dru rug poisoning crisis isn’t new, and neither is the solution to prevent deaths: a safer dru r g supply. Governments are finally waki k ng up to this reality t . Al A cohol was legally regu gulated after a disas astrous attempt at prohibition

Babe Ruth’s visit to Vancouver 80+ years ago brought to life in colour
M
any photos of The Great Bambino come only in shades of black and white, but thanks to the work of a photo colourizer, there are now some images just as colourful as his career. Two photographs of George “Babe” Ruth’s visit to Vancouver in 1934 were brought to life by the talents of Mark Truelove who runs Canadian Colour. Eighty-seven years ago Ruth Colour
was part of a star-studded lineup of major league baseball players who played an exhibition game at now long-gone Athletic Park. The game was part of a barnstorming expedition that took the players through Vancouver on their way to a historic 17-game tour of Japan. A lineup that accompanied Lou Gehrig, Lefty Gomez, Charlie Gehringer and Lefty O’Doul, who later managed the Vancouver
Mounties team when the Pacific Coast League made its local debut in 1956. The team played in the pouring rain to a nine-inning 2-2 tie before boarding the Empress of Japan, a Glasgow-built liner that made regular trans-Pacific sailings between Vancouver, Hong Kong and Japan, the following day. recently-launched program in B.C. aims to take much of the guesswork out of getting into film production whether it be behind the camera or in front of it. There is perhaps no better industry that embodies the expression “it’s not about what you know, it’s who you know” than that of film and television. However, an initiative headed up by WarnerMedia has set out to change that. Called Access to Action Canada, the program is to help those who “haven’t traditionally had pathways” into the entertainment industry. Already active in the United States, the program has placed over 400 participants on WarnerMedia productions, including Insecure, Lucifer, Watchmen, and In the Heights. Deanna Cadette, WarnerMedia Access Canada Executive Director, explained in a recent interview with Vancouver Is Awesome who exactly can benefit from the program and
the reason for its creation. "The industry has been historically, in terms of trades, very much malefocused,” Cadette said. “When we look at the population of Canada it’s largely white and those roles reflected that population." Cadette went on to say the program benefits anyone interested, regardless of previous experience. The way it works is you don't apply to WarnerMedia directly, first, you connect with community organizations WarnerMedia has partnered with and pick up the basics of film production from there. Those organizations include: • Creative BC • Intersections Media Opportunities for Youth Society • Collective Bunch Society • Vancouver Asian Film Festival VAFF Those organizations then encourage members to apply for WarnerMedia's
Access to Action program. If successful, you'll interview with WarnerMedia to see what production you would be the best fit for based on what you want to do with your new career in film and TV. This essentially takes out the networking and legwork normally involved in finding a film production gig. "There is incredible talent in this country across all experience levels and an abundance of roles across the industry, particularly as it emerges from the pandemic,” Cadette said. “This is a truly transformative moment for our industry and an opportunity for pivotal change."
