The Challenger Map has returned to the PNE... sort of

F

rom 1954 until 1997, a massive 6,080 square foot relief map of British Columbia was on display at the PNE, and today it's back... sort of. A small portion of the map is on display at this year's fair to support a fundraising effort that just launched, with the hopes of restoring the entire thing and bringing it back. The Challenger Map was constructed by a man named George Challenger and his family, and was donated by them as a gift to all of us. Made up of 989,842 individual pieces of plywood that were lovingly cut in the basement of the Challenger family home, a structure called the B.C. Building was constructed for it to be displayed in. Over more than four decades, millions of visitors learned about the vastness and beauty of our province through it. However in the 1990s, a COPE city council decided on a new vision for Hastings Park and the PNE, and the map was ultimately put into storage after nearly being put into a wood chipper. The B.C. building was demolished.

Deconstru ructed into 196 pieces, it ultimately ended up in a climate-ccontrolled Air Canada hangar at YVR, where it has been quietly sitting in pieces - fate unknown - for a very long time. During the 2010 Olympics, the RCMP paid to restore 9 panels of the 196. They had them on display in Richmond to show off the topography of the area around Vancouver, and the security challenges they faced due to B.C.'s geography. At this year's PNE, they're displaying those 9 restored panels along with pieces of the unrestored map to show the work that needs to be done to bring it back to its former glory. While it has held up surprisingly well, time hasn't been super kind to the appearance of the map. This display shows the contrast. For those who remember seeing the map from the 50s to the 90s, these panels and their story will be a walk down memory lane. The display in the heritage barns tells the story briefly to those who never saw the map.

The effort rt is the first public step taken by a group of British Columbians who are passionate about getting the map out of storage, having it restored and updated, and ultimately having it put on permanent display. This group includes Chief Strategy Officer with Kirk & Co Mike McDonald, Vancouver City Councillors Pete Fry and Lisa Dominato, BC Sports Hall of Fame CEO Nicholas Cartmell, Musqueam First Nation member Wade Grant, Bill Challenger, myself, and others, and recently gained steam with help from everyone at the PNE including but not limited to Shelley Frost, Laura Ballance, Jeff Strickland, Karen Massicotte, and Christie Kerr. Watch these pages in the coming months for status updates on the campaign to bring this wonderful piece of B.C.'s history back to the fair, and learn more about the map's history and how you can pitch in at challengermap.ca. We can do this, together! By Bob Kronbauer

Sharks spotted feeding along Stanley Park seawall

P

erhaps the las at thing Phoenix Lam expected to see on her dreary r morning run around d th he Stanlley Parkk seawall was a school of sharks chasing after their breakfast. The City of Vancouver communications worker was out on a 26 kilometre run around the park when she saw some dogs barking at the water near Siwash Rock. The water was seething with clouds of tiny fish - possibly herring - which the small sharks were munching on. Lam took a video of the feeding frenzy and posted

it to Twitter where she reminded people to always stop and smell the roses -- even when training for a maratthon. Not exactly great whites, these small sharks are called spiny dogfish and can grow on average between 75 and 105 cm but individuals have been known to grow to 130 cm. The spiny dogfish has an estimated life span of 30 to 40 years although ages as old as 70 years have been recorded. The sharks Lam saw may not be sticking around for very much longer. According

Don't void your roof's warranty! Get it fixed. A lot of homeowners don't know that their roofs require regular maintenance. They think that once a new roof is installed, that is it. Nothing to do until it wears out in 25 or 30 years. After all, the shingles are guaranteed by the manufacturer for that long. Well, the fine print of the manufacturer's warranty has a statement about the warranty becoming void if "regular maintenance" on the roof is not done. What is "regular maintenance?" It is getting the roof inspected on a regular basis and rectifying minor issues before they become major problems that destroy the integrity of your roof and its materials. For instance, the majority of emergency calls we receive are about leaks that were caused by gutters becoming clogged and rainwater backing up into the soffit and then leaking down into the house. This could have been averted by regular maintenance. Moss growing on shingles and cedar shakes damages the roofing material. Its presence would immediately invalidate any manufacturer's warranty. Regular maintenance would include clearing away these buildups and growth. Don't let this happen to you. A regular inspection by one of our professionals will fix these minor problems now before they become major in the future and keep your warranty intact.

New food truck shares love of flavours and video games

E

ver wanted to give up on your job and follow your passion? That's what Jorge Tuane did, the man behind one of Vancouver's newest food truck, 8bite. At 30 he was a lawyer in Chile, but had come to a dead-end. "I was done improving myself as a lawyer, I was never going to go further to improve myself as a lawyer," he tells Vancouver is Awesome. Looking for a new direction, he had a passion for food and a friend in Vancouver, so he decided to head north. "I was flirting with the idea [of coming to Vancouver], so when I visited him I scouted out the culinary schools here," Tuane says. "I thought 'This is actually doable.' "So I sold my car, saved up, and moved here and never looked back." At first it was tough, going through culinary school and entering the food industry. "Even though you get out

of culinary school you don't know much, you know very little and you're probably very horrible at what you do," he says of his early days as a chef. "Not everyone, there are talented people out there. But I wasn't one of them." But he kept at it and improved himself all the time, struggling at times while working in fine dining. He figures he lost at least 12 lbs. during this time. Then it started to pay dividends. "If you keep at it long enough you're going to improve somehow. If you have the grind and have the drive you will," he says. He started moving up the industry, and then 2020 happened. He decided his time in the fine-dining world was over and wanted to work on his own thing. That's what 8bite is. The video game-themed food trailer looks back at the early days of games, like early Super Mario games or Pacman. "It's basically referencing that era where video game developers had very little technology to work with but put out outstanding things. games that are very

memorable with the music as well," Tuane says, noting he's been a long-time gamer. "The details that are behind it are very intricate if you look for them." He wanted to take that concept and apply it to the food he makes. "So the whole point is to put out that feeling with the food," he says. "It's not complicated food, it's just simple and well done." Right now he's renting a food trailer and running service once a week. He's the only person working on the food, with his wife helping out with service. "This is basically a testing out, you can call it the 8bite beta test," he says. "We're testing it out, seeing how it's received. We're basically tweaking everything." Right now they have four sandwiches and ice cream as their specialties. Tuane is particularly proud of his Cubano. "I couldn't find a good bread out there; I'm very proud of that bread recipe, it took me a long time to get it," he says, noting it's a 100 per cent 8bite. The buns for the other

sandwiches are outsourced, but he makes most of the other ingredients. There are also a pair of bahn mi (one pork, the other vegan). "I never had a bahn mi until I came to live here. I had it when I was 30 and I was blown away by it. I thought it was outstanding, it was so so good," he says. "I had to make one." Dessert is something inspired by Chile; it's a lucuma ice cream treat. "The ice cream itself is in between butterscotch and maple syrup. It has an unusual taste," he says (something he notes he likes experimenting with). It goes great with strawberry and meringue." While that's the menu for now, he's working on other ideas, including something with beef. These days 8bite can be found once a week, at Jonathan Rogers Park in Mount Pleasant Fridays from 12 to 8 p.m. or until they're sold out. Other updates will be sent via Instagram. By Brendan Kergin

Tsleil-Waututh Nation member becomes first Indigenous chancellor of Emily Carr University education, reconciliation, community development, and environmental and land protection. And, one she will continue to teach as her grandfather did. This month, the 60-year-old was appointed chancellor of Emily Carr University of Art + Design. It’s the first time an Indigenous person has held the position at the school, which was founded in 1925. “Honestly, my first reaction was, ‘Wow. But why me? What have I done for this honour?’” Thomas said. “But I guess what really, you know, hit home for me was when the president said I would be an ambassador for the university. And I thought, ‘Oh, yeah, I can do that. I can be an ambassador … because that's what I've been doing my whole entire adult life is building relationships and making connections.” Names of potential

s a young girl, Carleen Thomas of səl̓ilw̓əta (Tsleil-Waututh) Nation would sit and listen intently to her grandfather talk and share knowledge. Her late grandparents’ home, which she now lives in, is right on the Dollarton Highway. She recalls she and her grandfather would sit at the kitchen table and look out the front window and he'd point out the Burrard Inlet and, across the way, Capitol Hill and Burnaby Mountain to the east and the City of Vancouver to the west. “My grandfather would say, 'They're [non-Indigenous] not going anywhere. We're not going anywhere; we have to find a way to coexist. It doesn't mean our ways are better, or their ways are better. We have to find a way to work together,’” Thomas said. It’s a teaching she’s held onto tightly through her varied career across

candidates for the position of chancellor were sought from all members of the Emily Carr community – including students, staff, faculty and

alumni – before being reviewed by members of the alumni association board and the school's board of governors.

“After a thorough search process that engaged the Emily Carr community, we were proud to nominate Carleen Thomas as our new

chancellor,” says Patrick Christie, president of the school's alumni association. “I believe her appointment will encourage us to reflect on our responsibilities to this land and to each other and to foster transformation within the university.” As chancellor, she’ll be the ceremonial head of the university and sit as a member of the board of governors and the senate, as well as acting as an ambassador. The chancellor also presides over major ceremonies, including convocation, and confers degrees to graduating students. Thomas will be formally installed as chancellor at a ceremony this fall and will initially serve a three-year term, which can then be renewed for another three years. Petition created to remove coyotes from Stanley Park

F

or one Vancouver political pundit, the issue of the coyote attacks in Stanley Park is not a question of wildlife preservation, but of public policy and safety. Nearly 40 coyote attacks on humans have been reported in the park this year, which includes attacks on a two-year-old girl and, most recently, a 69-year-old man. Efforts have been made to quell the attacks with Conservation Officers capturing and euthanizing some of the wild dogs last month but columnist and political commentator Bill Tieleman is calling for more decisive action. Lately, Tieleman has been riding the radio waves debating his position on the Stanley Park coyotes with animal rights activists. A firm believer that aggressive coyotes cannot coexist with park goers, Tieleman has created a Change.org petition in the hopes of gathering support for the total removal of coyotes from the park. The petition, titled “Kick Coyotes out of Vancouver before a child is killed!” was started on August 20. Tieleman says he “got to a breaking point" after reading about new attacks seemingly every week. As for the actions already taken by the City of Vancouver and Conservation Officers, Tieleman says the advice from the COs not to use the park is “ridiculous” and the previous euthanizations are not enough. “It's a matter of time, [if] this

keeps up before someone gets seriously injured or even killed,” Tieleman said in a recent interview with Vancouver Is Awesome. "Just to stay out of the park for what? Until what? What's going to happen?" "They've euthanized, trapped and or killed six coyotes, and there's still attacks going on so pretty clearly, the coyotes in the park are habituated to human beings, and they see them as food," Tieleman continued. While Tieleman believes the coyotes can’t be "unhabituated" to the environment they have become so used to, he agrees more locked garbage cans and education about coyotes should be implemented. As for actions to take in the present, Tieleman believes a culling is in order. "This is a level of attacks that clearly indicates the coyotes are habituated to humans and they see them as a food source. And that's got to be dealt with now," he said, adding that coyotes are not native to British Columbia let alone Vancouver. "The idea that we're interfering with them, they came here, we didn't go to their territory and encroach upon it,” Tieleman said. “They came to our territory. And they're an invasive species at this stage." Alternative solutions like relocation are also off the table for Tieleman who argued the coyotes have become so habituated to humans that no matter where they go they're going to be a problem.

The goal of Tieleman’s petition may extend farther than just Stanley Park; the animals are present in other parts of Vancouver, too, like Kitsilano Beach. "By refusing to act in any meaningful, significant way. We're just tempting the fates for a serious incident or fatality of a child or even an adult," he said. When asked how the removal of all the park’s coyotes would prevent more moving in at a later date, Tieleman pointed to animal rights activists’

lvis Presley performed outside the United States three times, once in Toronto, once in Ottawa, and once in Vancouver 64 years ago. The King of Rock's Canadian tour stops took place on two days in April 1957 and August 31 the same year and is extensively documented in the recently published book Elvis Presley: ‘All Shook Up’ in Canada. Written by New Westminster-born Brandon Yip, the story offers a fresh interpretation of Elvis’ tour and its culmination at Vancouver’s Empire Stadium. Yip has been writing about pop culture figures since 2001, having been fascinated by pop culture figures like James Dean and Elvis Presley since high school. Yip describes this

fascination as something that resonates with the psyche. “We don't personally know these ‘pop culture figures,’ but in a way, because we love them so much--they become almost like a friend to us,” Yip said in a recent Q&A with Vancouver Is Awesome. “This goes back to the celebrity worship that we have seen since the deaths of film stars Rudolph Valentino and James Dean-where there was a massive outpouring of grief.” Yip added the stars are kept alive by fans buying and treasuring any souvenirs as well as the internet preserving their music or movies. When writing his book, Yip spoke to the late Vancouver impresario Hugh Pickett and Canadian music manager Bruce Allen. Yip

also interviewed legendary Vancouver DJ Red Robinson, who emceed the King's 1957 Vancouver concert. “They were all kind and generous with their time,” Yip said. “Red Robinson was so generous and kind to me. He gave me coffee; and during a pause, after he answered one of my questions, he said to me, ‘You're not drinking your coffee. Is it that bad?’” Yip added that both Pickett and Allen were gracious with their stories of spending time with the King. “What I found after interviewing all three men about their interactions with Elvis was that he was a nice, polite young man. He seemed like a regular guy,” Yip said. After over sixty years,

new fans just "Can’t Help Falling In Love" with Presley, a fact Yip credits older generations with as well as, again, the internet. “He didn't invent rock and roll. But he was rock and roll's biggest star. Elvis also tested the boundaries of how an entertainer should behave on stage,” Yip said. “Elvis had the whole package: the looks, voice, charisma--he had it all. I see so many videos on YouTube showing younger Elvis fans reacting to Elvis' music in a positive way. So, it shows you that Elvis' legacy and appeal continue to endure.” Elvis Presley: ‘All Shook Up’ in Canada is available for purchase on Amazon, Massy Books, Hager Books and Indigo on Robson Street. here's a new mythical character joining Jack Frost, leprechauns, and the sandman. It's the Bike Fairy and they live in Vancouver. Okay, maybe they're not quite magical, but the Bike Fairy does live in Vancouver, and has been leaving charms on people's handlebars since 2017. At first, they were brightly coloured riders made of plastic. Recently, new metal models have been appearing around town and more are on their way for lucky cyclists. "Ultimately, the goal is to kind of share the love for cycling and bring joy to people who own a bike," the Bike Fairy tells Vancouver is Awesome. The idea came in 2017 after a friend, GM, died. "He was the original Bike Fairy," says the Bike Fairy. "He sadly passed away on his bike in 2017." GM used to hand out old

figurines from the Tour de France. In honour of the famous cycling race, little tin characters were created and sold; GM collected and shared those. When he passed, the Bike Fairy created the charms as an artistic form of grieving. The little coloured figures were 3D printed and held little nods to GM. "The model is kind of based on him in a lot of ways," says the Bike Fairy. "The spirit of the idea is originally from him." From that tragedy grew the myth of the Bike Fairy, who'd leave little charms strapped to the handlebars of unsuspecting cyclists around Vancouver and abroad. While they started out as plastic, they've recently gone metal. The Bike Fairy turned to a local jeweller for help and has had casts made; there are now gold, silver and brass coloured charms. "It's a lot more sturdy and

BIKE FAIRY

The Bike Fairy is real and lives in Vancouver, leaving charms

not much more expensive than making the 3D printed one," says the Bike Fairy. Now, loaded with the new charms, the Bike Fairy is hitting the streets, cycling paths and coffee shop bike racks of Vancouver looking for bicycles worthy of the charm. They look for bikes

they think cycling enthusiasts ride, noting there are nuances on each ride that suggest the rider is more serious. They frequent art galleries, bike shops, parks and pubs, always keeping an eye open for the right bikes when out and about. Sometimes they'll go for a ride with the

goal of leaving charms on unsuspecting bikes (and for some exercise). They don't stick around, though, since they don't want to be caught in the act. That's goal number two (after bringing joy). "I have got caught once when I was visiting in Portland," they note. "We were going shopping there and checking out the cool doughnut shops and the breweries. "It was a rainy day and I spotted a nice bike I wanted to tag and a guy came running out asking what the hell I was doing to his bike." The Bike Fairy then had to explain, calmly, what was happening. It was tense at first, but the Portlander lightened up after. Fiddling around with someone's bike is not usually appreciated. "People don't like you touching their bike," they say. "In a city like Vancouver, where having your bike stolen is almost a rite of passage, people definitely

keep one eye on what they're doing and one on their bike." Charms aren't just found in Vancouver anymore. While about 100 have been attached to handlebars here, there are helpers in Toronto, Vienna, and Amsterdam who've spread another 30. And there's no reason to slow down; it's not about the Bike Fairy of Vancouver, it's about commemorating GM and the joy and community for cyclists, they say. "There's not meant to be a person behind the Bike Fairy, much like Santa Claus or the actual tooth fairy or Daft Punk or other masked heroes," says the Bike Fairy. To that end, they have a message for Vancouver's bike riders. "Keep an eye out for other people with charms on their bikes and keep space on your handlebars and you might be lucky to find a charm on it." By Brendan Kergin

Kelowna to Kitsilano: Man plans massive 1-day ride to support cancer foundation

T

he Tour de Cure has three levels; courage (a 50 km ride), champion (a 100 km ride) and challenge (160 km ride). Sean Dalin is taking to a whole new level. Maybe call it conqueror. The Langley man, who just started cycling in 2020, has decided to take on a massive 400+ km ride from West Kelowna to Kitsilano Beach to raise money as part of the BC Cancer Foundation's cycling fundraiser (which is replacing the Ride to Conquer Cancer). "I started cycling a year ago and it was a really big

game-changer in my mental health," he tells Vancouver is Awesome. "I wanted to find a way to give back and do some fundraising." Dalin was inspired by a close friend of his was diagnosed in 2017 with a type of brain cancer; he underwent surgery and chemo and is stable now. Other friends and family have also been touched by cancer, and the cycling fundraiser seemed like a good cause. As for why he's decided on the massive 412 km route from the Okanagan to the coast, Dalin says ambition pushed him. "It's been a year of pushing myself and challenging myself

and I thought it would be a lot more interesting to go from one destination to another rather than a loop," he says. The challenge route is 160 km and Dalin thought doing the ride from Kelowna to Vancouver over two days would be a good personal challenge; that'd be about 200 km per day. "Then, realistically, I think I can possibly do it in a day, so I'm going to shoot for that," he explains. Dalin's one-day record is 177 km and he aims to hit 300 km each week. Since November he's hit that all but 5 weeks; sometimes he hits 500 km.

Just yesterday, Aug. 21, he knocked off 150 km. His average speed is 30 km/h; if he's able to keep that up on his massive ride it'd take under 14 hours. However, he's expecting it to be more difficult. For one thing, the ride includes 4,000 m of elevation over the route he's mapped out. For another, it also includes a section on the Coquihalla where there's highspeed traffic. "It's going to be very cautious riding, especially on such a busy road and unmaintained on the shoulders," he says. To make it he's planning on leaving his dad's house

in West Kelowna at 5 a.m., with an arrival time expected around 9 p.m. To help him make the last stretch he's hoping friends and fellow cyclists will join him. As for support, he's already tripled his fundraising goal. In fact, he met it surprisingly fast, he says. "It's been absolutely amazing," he says. "I posted it (his fundraising page) before bed one night and by the time I woke up and checked midday it had exceeded my goal of $1,000." With a week to go until the big ride he's at $3,040 (as of publishing) and hopes to see it go even higher, with

all funds going to the BC Cancer Foundation. "My friends and family that have been affected by cancer are B.C. based and I'm B.C. based, so I'd like to see it go into the local community, " he says. The big ride is Saturday, Aug. 28. Dalin says to keep an eye out for him on the Okanagan Connector, Coquihalla highway and through the Fraser Valley into Vancouver. "If you see a person on the side of the road going down the Coq it'll be me." By Brendan Kergin
