When preparing your move, ruthlessly evaluate what you regularly use and/or wear. If you possess things that no longer fit your lifestyle, let them go. Go light on the environment by donating to charity, family or friends, or consigning your finer pieces.

However, with the right resources and support, Teresa moved confidently forward and has never looked back. For those considering a move to an independent seniors lifestyle community, the change can certainly feel overwhelming. Tapestry helps to remove the stress from this process by offering a unique and complimentary move-in support service.
Tapestry’s Sales & Move-in Coordinators offer these simple ideas to make any planned move not only stress-free, but also an exciting adventure that sets the foundation for a wonderful new beginning.
Make a Realistic Plan – and Stick to It Start your move by making a plan. Assess your house to determine the scale and scope of the work. Reduce your stress by creating a schedule that focuses your effort for a few hours a day. To lighten the load, use professional resources and involve friends and family for support. ittle sharks have become popular in Vancouver after recent videos of spiny dogfish feeding along the Stanley Park seawall and Granville Island emerged online. Spiny dogfish are extremely common along the west coast and hunt in large schools. Technically a shark, the marine creatures grow between 75 and 105 cm. They generally live between 30 to 40 years, but some can live as long as 70. Dogfish were harvested in Canada in the early 20th century for their oil-rich liver, which was used for lamp oil and machine lubricants. They are part of a directed fishery in Atlantic Canada and are studied extensively by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Spiny dogfish are mostly considered a nuisance in the B.C. fishing community. They often interfere with fishing operations for other species and can damage gear. So why are we seeing so many in local waters around the city these days? According to Jason Assonitis, owner of Bon Chovy Fishing Charters, an abundance of

juvenile herring and a recent anchovy bloom (both major food sources for dogfish) could be the reason. Since 2011 the Squamish Streamkeepers have been trying to restore the herring population in False Creek, following years of a spawning decline due to increased urbanization. The initiative includes wrapping creosote pilings and making net panels, which provide artificial surfaces for herring spawning and rearing habitat. Jeffrey Scott, a sustainable fisheries researcher with Skipper Otto, speculates changing currents and rising water temperatures could also
play a role. But are you allowed to catch them? Turns out you can, and it’s actually pretty easy. Our publisher, Bob Kronbauer, caught and released three in False Creek while doing research for this story. One of them is pictured in the accompanying photo. But first things first, if you intend on fishing you’ll need a proper licence, which can be obtained online. In terms of bait, small fish such as cod, herring, haddock, or hake work best. Dogfish also eat invertebrates like krill, crabs, jellyfish, squid, and octopus. The current daily catch limit in
B.C. is four. In some parts of the world, spiny dogfish are used as a food source in fish and chips. They can even be smoked or used in stews. Their tough skin can make preparation difficult and watch out for those spines! Scott from Skipper Otto even says dogfish are kind of cute so you’ll probably want to toss them back. “They have these cat-like eyes; they make you feel very sympathetic toward them.” You won’t need a bigger boat, just a bit of patience.

Don't void your roof's warranty! Get it fixed. A lot of homeowners don't know that their roofs require regular maintenance. They think that once a new roof is installed, that is it. Nothing to do until it wears out in 25 or 30 years. After all, the shingles are guaranteed by the manufacturer for that long. Well, the fine print of the manufacturer's warranty has a statement about the warranty becoming void if "regular maintenance" on the roof is not done. What is "regular maintenance?" It is getting the roof inspected on a regular basis and rectifying minor issues before they become major problems that destroy the integrity of your roof and its materials. For instance, the majority of emergency calls we receive are about leaks that were caused by gutters becoming clogged and rainwater backing up into the soffit and then leaking down into the house. This could have been averted by regular maintenance. Moss growing on shingles and cedar shakes damages the roofing material. Its presence would immediately invalidate any manufacturer's warranty. Regular maintenance would include clearing away these buildups and growth. Don't let this happen to you. A regular inspection by one of our professionals will fix these minor problems now before they become major in the future and keep your warranty intact.

headi With NHL players heading to 2022 Olympics, which Canucks will go?
T
he 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan may be over, but the 2020 Paralympics are currently in full swing and another Olympic Games are just a few months away. The 2022 Winter Olympics are set to take place in February in Beijing, China and NHL players are expected to participate in the men’s ice hockey event for the first time since 2014. The NHL and NHLPA agreed to allow players to go back to the Olympics as part of negotiations ahead of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs but the NHL’s refusal to cover COVID-19 insurance put those plans in jeopardy. According to reports over the weekend, however, the International Ice Hockey Federation has agreed to cover the insurance, which should remove the final hurdle. Eight members of the Vancouver Canucks represented their respective countries in 2014. Roberto Luongo and Dan Hamhuis won gold for Team Canada, defeating Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin, and Alex Edler, who settled for silver for Sweden. Ryan Kesler fell

just short of a medal with Team USA, Yannick Weber represented Switzerland, and Ronalds Kenins suited up for Latvia. The current Canucks might be able to match that number at the 2022 Olympics. Elias Pettersson is a lock for Team Sweden. He was a baffling omission from Sweden’s 2018 Olympic team despite leading the SHL in scoring as a rookie. Sweden was subsequently knocked out in the quarterfinals, not even making it to the medal round. Pettersson could be joined by new teammate Oliver Ekman-Larsson, whose play has fallen off in recent years but has represented Sweden at one previous Olympics and six World Championships. Even Nils Höglander has an outside shot if he can take a step forward in his sophomore season in the NHL. Team USA will likely have the most Canucks representation. Brock Boeser is a safe bet and Quinn Hughes, despite some tough competition on the blue line, should be as well. J.T. Miller will be in the mix, either as a scoring winger or a bottom-six centre, and Thatcher Demko might also

t team, albeit as a make the goaltender likely third-string th behind Connor Hellebuyck y and John Gibson. Then there’s the wild card: Conor Garland. The winger just established himself as a top-six winger this past season, then went to the World Championships and led Team USA in scoring with 13 points in 10 games, good for second in the tournament. He’s a long shot, but a strong start to the season could put him in the conversation. Slovakia, who just qualified for the Olympics this week, will have one Canuck. Jaroslav Halak is the only active Slovakian goaltender in the NHL and it’s safe to say he’ll be Slovakia’s starter, even at the age of 36. At the other end of his career is prospect goaltender Arturs Silovs. He was on Latvia’s roster for the Olympic
qualifiers and is likely to be the team’s second or third-string goaltender behind Elvis Merzlikins. There are a couple of other possibilities. Perhaps Vasily Podkolzin, who has been groomed as a top player on Russia’s international squads for years, gets the call in a fourth-line role. Maybe Finland’s startling lack of depth on defence means Olli Juolevi gets a shot if he finds his groove with the Canucks. Finally, there’s Team Canada, and just one Canuck could potentially don the red maple leaf: captain Bo Horvat. He faces stiff competition, however, as Canada has centre depth to spare and Horvat has never really played on the wing. More likely than not, Canada won’t have any Canuck content in Beijing.

Claiming ‘discrimination,’ Vancouver businesses say they won’t enforce B.C.’s vaccine passport “The government is asking us to defy the Canadian Constitution or lose our business,” Matthews wrote. “They want small businesses to invade the medical privacy of their customers and DISCRIMINATE them based on a new, still in trial phase, medical treatment.” Kyla Lee is a Vancouver lawyer who in recent days has received many questions asking if the vaccine passport is indeed an infringement on Canadian’s Charter Rights. She took to TikTok to share her thoughts on the matter and says ultimately it’s a fair balance. “Your Charter Rights aren’t absolute. Like at any time the government has the ability to limit your Charter rights,” Lee says. “That can include restrictions on your rights to access certain things, restrictions on your rights to go certain places, restrictions on your bodily integrity rights.” In her explanation, Lee draws a comparison between the vaccine and taking a breathalyzer test. Since driving is a privilege and not a right there are restrictions on your rights. Provided the demand for the breathalyzer test is lawful, there is a restriction on your bodily integrity rights and you must provide the sample or face legal consequences. “We already see these types of liberty restrictions existing in our society,” Lee adds. “They exist because there’s a public safety balance that has to be done.” Lee goes on to say it is important to recognize what’s actually being restricted with B.C.’s vaccine passport, i.e. not people’s rights to access essential services. “You have to be vaccinated to do things that we commonly understand to be part of the most privileged activities in society: going to casinos, going to restaurants, going to bars, those are activities of privilege,” Lee said. “What the government is saying is that if you are going to participate in those activities of privilege then you have to be vaccinated.” Finally, Lee lays out what would likely happen if the order is challenged in court, something she says undoubtedly will happen
anyways. Lee expects the courts will look at the type of balance that has been struck, the activities that have been chosen, the level of risk associated and deem it a justifiable infringement of rights. “Even if they find that you have a right to go to a restaurant, which you don’t necessarily have,” Lee said.

laiming ‘discrimination,’ Vancouver businesses say they won’t enforce B.C.’s vaccine passport Following the provincial government’s announcement that B.C. residents will need to show proof of vaccination to attend certain social events, some small businesses took to social media to announce they will not be enforcing the order. The movement was spurred by the Instagram account @savesmallbusinessbc which helped coordinate and promote anti-vax protests earlier this year. Off Instagram, over 64,000 have joined the Facebook group BC Businesses against Health Pass where the narrative is much the same. Posts from business owners say they will not “discriminate” against those who are vaccinated or unvaccinated. Katia Somerville, the owner of and an artist at Rainfire Tattoo located on East Pender Street posted to the Facebook group advertising her business and how she conducts it. Rainfire Tattoo “does not discriminate against anyone, v or no v,” Somerville writes. “We are a private studio and do not require a mask while getting tattooed.” The tattoo shop is one of the 28 Vancouver businesses on a growing online list also called BC Businesses against Health Pass. Among them are several massage parlours, naturopaths or vitamin businesses along with two Vancouver eateries: Just Waffles on East Hastings and Kitsilano’s Corduroy Restaurant. Rebecca Matthews, Corduroy’s owner was vehemently opposed to B.C.’s first mask mandate and spoke at anti-vax rallies earlier this year. Patrons and staff at Corduroy also openly defied provincial health orders in April which led to the City of Vancouver suspending the restaurant’s business licence. In a recent post to her restaurant’s Instagram page, Matthews spoke about the actions she will be taking and encouraged others to do the same.

Meet the Pakistani immigrant restaurateur taking on KFC on food quality, product packaging, customer service, front of house set up and cleaning and I had mastered all those skills. When they rejected me, I was devastated, I thought I was the best candidate,” said Jahangir during an interview at Chicken World on Denman St. Looking back, Jahangir said he now feels lucky that the company rejected him. He wants to one day directly compete with the fast-food giant. In 2017, Jahangir left Calgary as it was getting harder for him to manage expenses without a stable job. In Vancouver, he thought he could have a fresh start. “I instantly fell in love with the city and told my wife that I want to open a restaurant here,” added Jahangir. His wife supported his decision. However, the family decided she should move to Pakistan with their newborn for a while so that Jahangir could financially support his business idea. Jahangir’s elder brother

tarted as a luncheonette, Vancouver-based Chicken World is now a fast-food restaurant chain, with a growing presence all over the province. Adeel Jahangir, an ex-KFC employee, immigrated to Calgary from Pakistan in 2006 to find better career opportunities. Jahangir brought his Master of Business Administration and managerial experience from Pakistan but had to do multiple survival jobs and side gigs to make money and support his family after immigrating to Canada. “One time I worked straight for 37 hours, and I was completely exhausted after that,” recalls 37-year-old Jahangir. Though he had worked with KFC for several years in Pakistan, the fast-food chain rejected him in Canada after initial rounds of interviews. “I joined KFC at the age of 17 and went on to win the national KFC champs challenge in Pakistan. That competition tests employees
quit his job and moved to Vancouver from England to become a business partner. In 2019 the duo invested all their savings in taking over an existing restaurant space in Surrey. Adeel said that though they enjoyed the journey, starting from scratch was a real struggle.
“Managing the financials and overlooking all the operational aspects was the hardest part.” They introduced new recipes that included a blend of spices and 13 distinctly flavoured herbs commonly used in South Asian cuisines. Menu items are named after
different characters of the popular Bollywood movie Sholay. “I know it’s hard for some people to pronounce those names correctly, but our team enjoys teaching them the story behind the names and also a bit about the South Asian culture.”

fter several months of having a provincial health order in place mandating the use of face masks in public indoor spaces like stores, restaurants, and libraries, British Columbia made mask-wearing a “recommendation” only as of July 1, 2021. But in the wake of surging coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in the province - in particular, those of the more nimble “Delta” variant of the virus and affecting
predominantly British Columbians who were not fully vaccinated - provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry reinstated the mask mandate, which went into effect Aug. 25. Once again, donning a face mask is required of anyone 12 and older while on Vancouver’s public transit system, inside grocery stores, or at an event at BC Place among others. According to a recent poll conducted on V.I.A., 75 per cent of Vancouver residents
are “strongly in favour” of the mask mandate, indicating an overwhelming majority of locals support the reinstated public health order. Just 13 per cent of locals polled consider themselves strongly opposed. While the poll was open to responses from anywhere in the world, approximately half of the votes came from within Vancouver, and the local votes were generally on par with the total votes. The city is starting seismic upgrades on the bridge over False Creek starting Wednesday, Aug. 25, along with new lighting. The lighting will be put in place first, according to a press release, and will mean intermittent closures of small areas. In early September the structural work will begin, which will affect pedestrians and cyclists significantly, as the sidewalk and cycle lane on one side will have to be closed. “Walking and cycling access will remain in place on the non-working side of the bridge. Time to get Shameless: Filipino food truck opens Vancouver restaurant

Matt Brennan and Corvette Romero weren’t planning on putting a hot pink neon sign shouting “#getshameless” in their new Vancouver restaurant, but it turns out it was a clutch decision. Mounted on a wall of empty Spam cans, the cheeky decor feature is like a bat signal to Instagrammers and TikTokers who know a great photo op when they see one. Spam cans and being “cheeky” are the calling cards of Shameless Buns, the Filipino jeepney-inspired food truck that first revved up on the streets of Vancouver a few years ago. Now Shameless Buns has set up shop in its first brick-and-mortar, a small space on Fraser Street in south Vancouver that is a beacon for food fans across the region. Brennan and Romero have
nurtured a cult following for their big, bold eats, centred on the vibrant flavours of Romero’s Filipino childhood. The pun-ny “buns” are in fact pandesal - Filipino buns - that sandwich fillings like sweet and spicy longaniza (Filipino sausage) or Spam with an oozy “sexy” sunny side up egg. They also dish up addicting fries tossed in a salty-sour sinigang seasoning mix, and load them with toppings perfect to cure your hangover or satisfy serious munchies. Devotees have been known to roll up to the truck - and now the Fraser Street spot - just to sink their teeth into Shameless Buns’ over-the-top mash-up creations like their burritosized lumpia (egg roll) filled with tangy-sweet Filipino spaghetti. For their restaurant, Brennan and Romero have got the regular Shameless Buns menu with a couple of new additions, like a hearty h meatloaf sandwic sandwich and a corn side dish inspired in by Mexican street ccorn, elote, with more surprises from the t duo sure to com come. The life and business partne partners made quick work of turning 5772 Fraser Street Str into Shameless
Buns; in addition to that eye-catching neon-lit Spam can wall there are traditional and contemporary touches all over the restaurant, including a full wall showcasing an image of the truck rolling in Vancouver, with personal touches worked in amidst the scenery, like the names of loved ones on people’s t-shirts and business signs. There isn’t a ton of seating at the restaurant, but Shameless Buns’ eats have long been portable by design - it’s a food truck after all - and you can definitely take your Sausage Party to go. A Sausage Party at Shameless Buns are fries loaded with longaniza, a sexy egg, and other tantalizing toppings, by the way. Those toppings include homemade condiments, some of which you can purchase by the jar or bottle from the restaurant, so you can get a little Shameless at home, too. By Lindsay William-Ross

t’s been almost a year to the day since Shay Hayashi was walking down Ruby Street. It was a Tuesday. She was with her partner, Michael, picking something up. While looking for an address they got turned around; Michael noticed a bumblebee they’d passed on the ground earlier was still on the sidewalk and stopped Hayashi from stepping on it. Hayashi got on the bee’s level and noticed it didn’t have fullsize wings. “It was just a thing that happened that day, not foreseen in any way,” she says. “She was on the sidewalk and then still there 15 minutes later, so I bent down and picked her up.” The bee immediately crawled into her hand. “I don’t want to project, but maybe she was looking for help,” Hayashi says.
The two collected a few flowers as bee food, and headed home. For the next 32 days Ruby Tuesday the bumblebee lived with the couple in Vancouver. At first they hoped the bee’s wings would grow back. They were there, but looked like they had shriveled up for some reason, maybe disease or heat, Hayashi isn’t sure. Over time the bee became more and more part of the family, even getting along
with their cat, Pyro. “To be around her was comforting; she wanted to hang out,” Hayashi says. “She was just a really sweet creature. She just accepted and emitted care. “It was like having a baby unicorn in my palm.” It worked out that Hayashi had her wisdom teeth taken out the day after Ruby was found; for the next two weeks she was able to care for the big bee full time. “It was like having a little human for a little bit,” she describes the experience. “Her emotional and intellectual capacity, I know this sounds weird, but she was so smart.” Ruby would go out in public as well, riding on Hayashi’s shoulder for example. “A lot of people would stop me and say ‘You’ve got a giant bee on you,’” she says. When she had to go back to work as a nanny, Ruby tagged along. “The boy I was nannying was a really great kid, he interacted with her, too,” she says. “I took them to parks and community gardens.” Even with the young boy, Ruby was calm. “She was docile enough that she could sit on a two-yearold’s arm and hang out with us,” she says. They were together 24 hours a day; when they were at home Michael would hang
out and help with the bee as well. Ruby had certain habits and behaviours that they learned over time. “I would know if we were out in public and she was scared, I knew if she was hungry, I would know if she was sleepy,” Hayashi says. “She was like a newborn but also like a wise old lady at the same time.”
Her emotional and intellectual capacity, I know this sounds weird, but she was so smart. Ruby liked sleeping in Hayashi’s hand, but they had a terrarium for her. When she was placed in the terrarium, she’d wake up, looking for her humans; to solve this they got a dollhouse bed. “We put her on a bed and she slept on the pillow; we put that in the terrarium and that became the nighttime routine.” While caring for the big bug was work, it was far outweighed by the reward. Like any good friend, she brought happiness and comfort to Hayashi. “It’s so strange to say, because I know it sounds crazy, but she was a very understanding thing; (Ruby) couldn’t speak my language, but could pick CONTINUE ON PAGE 16

up on my emotions and my vibes,” she says. “It’s a weird thing to talk about, because when I’m explaining it to people I sound like a crazy person, but it’s the truth.” She adds that bees do communicate with each other in a fairly complex way, dancing to share directions with each other. It wasn’t just Hayashi that connected with Ruby; Michael and their cat, Pyro, did as well. She describes Pyro as a stonecold killer when it comes to some insects, but the cat understood Ruby was special. “I think it was him watching us and reacting to the special treatment we were giving
her, he’s a very smart cat,” she explains. “I think it was beyond curiosity; he would sit by it and protect her a little bit.” Once when Ruby was lost (a serious concern when the animal is so small), Pyro was the one who found her. Losing her was always a concern, given how delicate a bee is. As they learned more about bumblebees, specifically yellow-faced bumblebees, they realized Ruby’s lifespan was likely only around a month. “It seemed not natural that something with that emotional capacity and intellect would have that short of a lifespan,” says

Hayashi. She secretly hoped Ruby was a queen bee; queens’ life spans are significantly longer than that of a worker bee. She had ideas about an indoor greenhouse with flowers. “I kind of, tragically, was hoping we’d have her for the long run; her death was devastating but to be expected,” Hayashi says. One morning she woke up, walked over to the terrarium, looked and reached in. Normally Ruby would come over to her hand and climb on, but sometimes she’d be hiding. Hayashi moved some items around and found Ruby; she was moving slowly. “I called Michael and told him to come right away,” Hayashi says. “She hung in for a couple of hours. When we were all together, even with the cat, Pyro, she stopped moving. “I don’t want to project about how a bug felt but I don’t think she wanted to go.” That was near the end of September 2020. She submitted Ruby’s story to the Dodo, a social media company that specializes in sharing animal stories. They recently turned the footage into a short video. “I thought it’d get a few thousand views for sure, but I think it’s at 16 million views,” Hayashi says. “I’m glad because if there are 16 million people that know bees are not ‘just insects,’ that they have the capacity for being emotionally and intellectually connected, that’s good.” One person has even reached out about doing a children’s book. “I hope it’ll stop people from squishing a bee,” she says. She doesn’t like being recognized and finds the attention a bit overwhelming, but thinks it’s worthwhile. “I think people need to know what bees are capable of, what any living thing is capable of,” she says. “It’s definitely changed the way I look at things; aside from mosquitos, I don’t kill anything — even spiders.” The fact that humans share the world with a huge number of living things we may not give enough credit to is central to why she’s sharing the story. “I think what comes from this story is that people shouldn’t fear bees,” she says. “If they see a bee, or anything, it’s not just a bug, it’s something capable of caring.” By Brendan Kergin

Vancouver cold case files: High-rolling couple disappeared in 1994 - or were they murdered?
T
he disappearance of Nick and Lisa Masee from their home in 1994 is North Vancouver RCMP’s biggest missing person case, but they really don’t know if the Masees are intentionally missing or were caught up in a VSE stock scam and murdered. I worked in the public relations department for the Vancouver Stock Exchange in the late 1980s—the same time that Forbes magazine published a cover story calling it the “Scam Capital of the World.” While I never met Nick Masee, the mysterious disappearance of him and his wife Lisa from their home in August 1994 has always intrigued me. Before Nick Masee retired from his job as head of private banking with the Bank of Montreal, he worked for some of the Vancouver Stock Exchange’s most colourful stock promoters, regularly socializing with high-rollers such as Murray Pezim, Harry Moll, Nelson Skalbania and Herb Capozzi. Nick ate with them at Hy’s, Il Giardino and Chardonnays. He went on weekend fishing trips to Sonora Lodge. He flew in private jets to boxing matches in Las Vegas and stayed at their Scottsdale mansions. He was a guest at
one of Pezim’s weddings that took place on a luxury yacht. But while the Masees may have associated with the rich and powerful, they were living way beyond their means. As a banker, Nick pulled in around $85,000 a year. Their modest North Vancouver home was heavily mortgaged and they owed $70,000 on their credit cards, Lisa worked at the Yokoi Hair Salon on Cambie Street. Unlike their jet-setting contemporaries, Nick and Lisa’s getaway was a timeshare in Maui. Nick was banking that his new venture as a director of a sketchy VSE start-up called Turbodyne Technologies would propel him into the big leagues. The first hint that something was wrong was the unlocked door at the Masees’ house. The security system was off, their car was in the driveway, their 17-year-old cat was inside the house and so were their passports. Two plastic ties, similar to the ones that police use for handcuffs, were found just inside the front entrance. Nick and Lisa Masee went missing from their home 27 years ago. Their case is with the North Vancouver RCMP and listed as “missing with suspicious circumstances.” In 2019, Nick’s two children Nick Junior and Tanya
doubled the reward money to $50,000 for any information that could help solve the mystery of their father’s disappearance or murder. The RCMP’s Gord Reid is
keeping an open mind. “It’s a head scratcher,” he told me. “I’ve got missing people that I assume are murdered because they are not the kind of people who would be able to disappear. But the Masees
could. He was a sophisticated guy. They both had passports from other countries, they had lived around the world, he understood international banking, and they had some money stashed aside.”
