ancouver's fashion designers represent a multicultural community and often bring a blend of western and nonwestern trends to market. One brand that has added to the city's eclectic fashion industry is The Pool Riders, a local apparel label that offers styles inspired by Japanese craftsmanship and French vintage workwear. Ted Nakayama, head designer and founder at The Pool Riders, has come a long way to become one of the city's most beloved designers. The 54-year-old stylist and award-winning skateboarder is on his journey to make a name for himself as an adventure-loving fashion designer. "The brand name is inspired by Ted's involvement with skateboarding," explained Nakayama's stepdaughter, Mio, who translated his responses from Japanese. Born and raised in Osaka, Japan, Nakayama immigrated to Vancouver when he was 35 years old after several years of operating a restaurant. At 18, his parents
passed away, which led to him dropping out of design school. Nakayama "ended up running a restaurant," which he later realized was not his passion, but just a means to support the family financially. After his parents' deaths, Nakayama never considered working in design until two years ago when he launched The Pool Riders. Nakayama landed in Vancouver with a plan to start a Japanese barbecue restaurant. Three years into successfully running Richmond's first Japanese barbecue restaurant, he realized the sense of fulfilment was still missing. It took him another five years to finally make a move. With support from his wife, things became possible, said Nakayama, who recalled that key moment: "My wife and I realized [the restaurant was] not something I wanted to do or continue doing so she encouraged me to make that jump." Nakayama struggles with English, which is why Mio helps with translation and marketing materials for the business. Even though there

has been a bit of a language barrier, his passion for skateboarding led him to build a community and get to know people. "My words weren't as clear, but everyone was super friendly. This made me feel appreciative and glad that I came to Canada," the founder of the family-owned business said. The Pool Riders supports several other local boutiques.

The brand works with a Vancouver-based seamstress and other businesses like Goodlad clothing and Greyhearts Denim. The firm is proud of its madein-Vancouver products and wants to preserve production in the city. In addition, the brand donates shorts made from fabric leftovers to young skateboarders in Vancouver. "When I was younger a lot
of people supported my skateboarding passion and I want to do the same," added the former competitive skateboarder. "As an immigrant entrepreneur, everything was a first for me. I had to make my own ways of getting things done." Nakayama also said he is still learning and looking for people to advise him on fabrics, fashion trends, and
patterns. Started in 2019, the brand sold a hundred jackets within the first year of the business. They have seen their sales growing since the launch year and hoping to sell more this year. "Two things that I have loved since birth: skateboarding and clothing. These two things represent The Pool Riders," noted Nakayama. Nakayama's workday starts with a cup of coffee before he moves on to doing research and designing from his studio in Richmond. Research also involves walking around the city to look for fabrics and understand fashion trends. Even at 54, Nakayama skateboards two to three days a week and enjoys performing tricks in a 10-feet bowl near his studio. His passion for adventure is still alive. Later this year, Nakayama will be travelling to the U.S. to compete in a snowboarding tournament's senior division. The family has high hopes for the future of The Pool Riders and plans to expand all over Canada in the coming years. By Tanmay Ahluwalia

fter years of making do in parking lots, tiny yoga studios, art galleries and churches, a Vancouver roller skating club has found the perfect space to keep on a-rollin'. Last week, Rolla Skate Club announced the group would be opening its doors at the PNE’s aptly named Rollerland building. With the search for a permanent space coming to an end after three years and a global pandemic, Rolla co-founder Carla Smith was ecstatic to share the hard-earned triumph. “It’s been a long time in this community that we have been working under one umbrella or another to find a permanent home for roller skating in this city,” Smith said in a recent release. “Having found a space for roller skating not only means a big win for Rolla Skate Club, but also for the growing roller skating community in Vancouver.” The space went from being

a Pure Foods Building in 1931 to housing teenage boys during the Japanese internment in 1942, to later becoming Rollerland and serving the roller skating community in the 1970s-80s. The building maintained its name even as it became an all-purpose space, hosting small consumer shows and banquets. “For the team at Rolla to be
able to settle in a space that has a history of roller skating has also made it more special to bring the skating groove and community back to it,” states the PNE’s release. The grand opening of the new and improved Rolla Skate Club home at Rollerland will take place on Saturday, Dec. 4, for which tickets are currently on sale. Along with the
announcement, Rolla Skate Club painted a picture of what activities or events skaters could expect to see at the new space. These include weekly themed roller skate parties on Saturdays, roller skating classes and fitness training, kids and teens programs and a roller derby team. By Cameron Thomson

hen the company Neon Products is mentioned, the first image your mind may conjure is that of large flashy signs that, depending on your opinion, beautifully or gaudily illuminated many storefronts of Vancouver’s commercial districts, predominantly from the late 1920s until the 1960s. When this February 1946 photograph was taken, Neon Products’ focus was

ancouverites will have the chance to feast their eyes on a huge, illuminated beaver this fall. The bedazzled rodent will be featured in English Bay this year as part of the annual Lumière light show, which runs from Nov. 12 to 30 and will feature new and familiar displays at English Bay, Jim Deva Plaza, Granville Island and Bentall Centre in Downtown Vancouver. Luna, a 7-metre long and 2.5-metre high orca that has a white powder-coated frame, will return this year as part of the festival. Designed by MK Illumination, he contains over 6,000 LED white environmentally friendly bulbs and was named after the well-known orphaned orca whale that inhabited the waters of the Nootka Sound from 2001 to 2006. The organizers are asking the public to help name one new installation: the dazzling, 12-foot-tall beaver. A couple of people have already suggested Bonnie.

Jim Deva Plaza is also set to host two new art installations including the ‘Helianthus Enorme’, a massive sunflower from Portland standing at more than 25-feet-tall. The location’s second art installation, known as ‘Twin Harmonic Amplified NeuroKnowledge Stimulator’ (T.H.A.N.K.S.), is designed to amplify feelings of gratitude according to a Lumière release. The Bentall Centre will play home to ‘Parasol’, oneof-a-kind mushroom-like structures that fuse nature
and innovative light design. Each of the five, nine-foot-tall sculptures contains 40 fins to mimic the underbelly of a mushroom. Parasol will take on a new life when animated with colourful patterns that react to music providing an exceptional visual experience for visitors enjoying the patio in the evening. The new beaver installation will also coincide with November's full moon, the full beaver moon. By Elana Shepert

A couple months ago my family decided to sell our house, so we started looking around for a realtor to make it happen for us. Not two days later, a flyer arrived in our mailbox telling us about an agent who had just helped sell a house for a neighbour three doors down. The flyer said the home (which had an almost identical assessment as ours) sold for more than the asking price, and that if we were looking to sell we should give

As we were finishing up our move Chad sent an email asking if we could meet up to discuss him selling our home. I responded by asking him if he was double vaccinated, and he responded with "I am not double vaccinated yet."
His use of the word "yet" regarding being double vaccinated might lead one to believe that he had a single dose, but seeing as I'm a skeptical journalist who asks a lot of questions, my BS detector started going off. So I asked him if he'd chosen not to get vaccinated at all.

DAVID ASTE
O
ut of a galaxy far far away, one of science fiction’s most iconic spacecraft has made an emergency water landing here in Vancouver. Well, maybe not, but local artist David Aste sure made it look that way. In his most recent work, Aste showed what Han Solo’s ship the Millennium Falcon would look like if it were to cruise by Stanley Park just off Prospect Point. If you look close enough, there are some additions to the Falcon that would make it feel right at home in Vancouver. This isn’t the first time Aste has brought a Star Wars ship to life in Vancouver though. Just last month he showed what a 1,600m-long Imperial
Star Destroyer would look like hovering above the city. These renderings will eventually be part of a 10-part series Aste is working on the artist revealed in a message to Vancouver Is Awesome. “The idea is to showcase what it would look like if instead of another distant planet, it was Vancouver at the center of the action,” Aste said. So who knows, maybe we’ll see the Death Star, rising like a second moon above the horizon, or maybe an Imperial landspeeder tearing through the woods of Stanley Park. Whatever is to come next you can keep up to date by following Aste on his Instagram account @davidaste. By Cameron Thomson

Take care: four unexpected sources of mental health distress
By Dr. Cameron Anderson, Attending Psychiatrist and Medical Manager,Segal 7 general psychiatry inpatient unit, VGH If you find yourself struggling, reflect on where these feelings are coming from to help your mental wellbeing. Instead, Anxiety Canada recommends you try and limit how often you intake news about the pandemic (or any major news story) so that you can keep yourself informed while still maintaining your mental health. Commit to only checking in a couple times per day, set times to check in, disable news alerts, or rely on family and friends to provide major updates
Photo: Getty Images
Many individuals struggle with their mental health — and while the COVID-19 pandemic has increased mental distress, many longstanding and sometimes surprising causes remain the same. This is why it’s remarkable to see people doing their best despite this life-altering event. It’s an achievement in and of itself and it’s OK if you’re not feeling as much like yourself as you’re used to. Just remember — you’re important. You matter. It’s OK to take care of yourself. Take a walk. Take a break. Take a moment. And if you find yourself struggling, reflect on where these feelings are coming from. There are several unexpected sources of mental distress that when addressed can help your mental wellbeing.
COVID-19 and its related news are understandably the leading stories in news outlets and social media channels. Its impact is felt by all to varying degrees, and there’s a strong desire to keep on top of the latest developments. However, when this is the majority of information we take in on a daily basis, it can cause mental distress. As the perception of threat increases, so do our bodily responses, including anxiety and worry.
We’ve all heard it before — sleep is important. It’s a tale backed by science, as it allows your brain to focus on important body responses, form new pathways for learning, remembering, and processing information, and rebuild your energy for the next day. Lack of sleep is linked with a number of chronic diseases and conditions, including depression. This can become a cycle as lack of sleep creates stress during the day, which in turn contributes to further sleep troubles. Try to commit to a consistent bedtime routine and minimize caffeine, watching TV or using the computer before bed. When you are stressed, your body responds as though you are in danger. It makes hormones speed up your heart, you breathe faster and you can experience sporadic bursts of energy. Some stress is normal, however if stress happens too often or lasts too long, it can cause health problems. It’s important to have positive coping responses to stress at the ready, as some strategies are not as helpful as others and some of our go-to supports — like social connection and routine — have been disrupted during the pandemic. Positive responses include: listening to music, laughing or crying, taking a bath or showering, going out with a friend, doing creative activities, and many more.
The connection between concussions and mental health is often overlooked. An estimated 25 per cent of mild traumatic brain injury patients develop a mental health condition such as depression or post-traumatic stress disorder within three months of injury. Concussions can be destructive, affecting the ways your body functions: your thinking, your emotions, your sleep. You may feel confused, have trouble remembering things, or generally feel sluggish and tired. Suddenly you can feel more emotional, sad, irritable, nervous or anxious. And it can directly impact your sleep, leading you to either have too little, too much, or none at all. Receiving a diagnosis and treatment plan can greatly help patients recover. Seek help if you suspect you are suffering from this condition. Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) has created a concussion guide for adults to help you get started. No one is perfect. We’re all facing our own challenges in our unique and nuanced ways during this global pandemic. Do what you can, and if you find yourself in need of a little more help, then try accessing some of the resources above. This has been a challenging time, and it’s essential not to neglect your mental health. So please, take care. If you find yourself in need of additional support, visit vghfoundation.ca/take-care. All aboard! Stanley Park's Bright Nights Christmas train back on track
T
he jolliest train ride in Vancouver is back on track for the 2021 holiday season, as the 24th annual Bright Nights in Stanley Park gears up to open on Nov. 26. The "Christmas Train" is resuming service for all merry-makers after a two-year pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year the festive family-friendly train event will be rolling until Jan. 2, 2022. It's one of the most magical holiday mini-adventures in Vancouver, as the Bright Nights Christmas Train chugs merrily around in Stanley Park; the train and plaza will be sparkling with millions of lights, offering an immersive illuminated experience like no other. The event doubles as a fundraiser for the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund. Vancouver's park board has donated more than $1.5 million to the Burn Fund since the event partnership began in 1998. Already, volunteers are

getting to work on dreaming up this year's enchanting train ride and all the special displays. “We are thrilled to return to Stanley Park to create a magical experience that families across the Lower Mainland can enjoy. Bright Nights is an event that our burn survivor and fire fighter community look forward to every year and we can’t wait to welcome the public back to the event,” says Ray Boucher, Vice President, BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund, in a media release. Tickets for Bright Nights in Stanley Park are now
available for purchase online. Due to capacity restrictions, guests must show their train tickets to enter the park and will board the train in their specified time slot. Please note that all guests are required to purchase a ticket to access the site this year (children 2 and under are free). Tickets will be available online only; no onsite ticket sales will be offered this year. Although proof of vaccination is not required at this time, masks are recommended. The train has been fitted with plexiglass dividers between the benches. By Lindsay William-Ross
