Ah, respected Elders, respected friends and relatives, respected visitors, respected students, respected dignitaries, respected teachers. Welcome into Snuneymuxw territory, today. You have left other work to be here today; you came to show honour and respect to our students today. With the utmost gratitude, we thank you respected ones.

Each graduate, after crossing the stage and meeting the Chancellor and President, is invited to touch the inside of the lid of the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner Box (Huupukwanum). The texture on the cover of the convocation program is a rendition of the texture on the inside of the lid. This VIU tradition symbolizes the impact and impression graduates leave on their university and weaves their stories together with those of graduates who came before them and all who will come after them.

Congratulations
Your University is proud of you.

Message from The Honourable Selina Robinson

Welcome to everyone gathered for the Vancouver Island University class of 2023 convocation ceremonies.

On behalf of Premier David Eby and the Government of British Columbia, a big congratulations on your graduation. This is an incredible accomplishment, and you should be very proud of the work you have done to reach this moment. I wish I could be there in person to celebrate your achievement.

As graduates, you have equipped yourselves with the skills, knowledge and education to seek out employment in the field of your choosing and develop a career that meets your expectations. You are here today because of hard work and perseverance. Well done! VIU has a great reputation for quality education and your time at VIU has served you well.

This is an incredible time to enter the workforce with opportunities in a wide range of sectors. Over the next decade, we are expecting more than one million new job openings in BC and 80% of these jobs will require post-secondary education or skills training. You are in a great position to take advantage of the world of opportunities there are for people in British Columbia.

You are the next generation of leaders and innovators. Be proud of what you’ve accomplished. I wish you all the very best as you pursue your dreams and make big things happen. Congratulations again on your graduation.

Sincerely,

Cloy-e-iis, Dr. Judith Sayers VIU Chancellor

Message from the President

Congratulations, Class of 2023. You are celebrating a major accomplishment today that will serve you, your family and your community for years to come.

During your studies at Vancouver Island University, you have gained knowledge, developed deep connections and cultivated fresh perspectives that you can now take into the world to be a force for transformation. Your energy and commitment to your discipline will help build stronger, healthier communities wherever you go.

As you leave campus today, remember to use your knowledge to build bridges and enhance understanding. Use your deep connections to continue to build relationships that solidify your commitment to the work you do. Continue to seek out new perspectives by bringing an openness of mind and curiosity of spirit to everything you do. Never stop learning and striving to improve. While your life as a university student may be ending, your journey as a learner is only just beginning.

Thank you to the family members, friends and supporters from our VIU community for walking with your learner on their journey and helping them reach their goals. This is a day of celebration for all of you as well.

Graduates, you now make the transition to our family of alumni. Please stay in touch and allow us to continue to celebrate alongside you as you reach career milestones and lead positive change. I am inspired by the many ways you are making an impact on our communities and look forward to hearing about your future successes.

Sincerely,

Valedictorians

A valedictorian gives a farewell and congratulatory speech addressed to graduates, guests and the institution. VIU's valedictorians are selected by the graduating class through a nomination process and an online election.

As a first-generation university student, Teagan Howden felt lost when she started in VIU’s Digital Media Studies program in 2018. Fast forward to today and she is gearing up for the next step on her journey towards becoming a corporate lawyer – a master’s degree. Highlights of her VIU time include organizing student orientation events and making the dean’s list in her second, third and fourth years.

Being one of the first groups of students to go through the restructured Master of Business Administration program was a “great experience” for Prabhdeep Singh Sambi. As a community engagement ambassador, he created meaningful networking opportunities that brought together his peers with local businesses. Classmates may remember him for being constantly involved and for freely expressing his views.

Watching the sunrise and sunset while studying on campus is one of Ashley Sandhu’s favourite memories from her time at VIU. Aside from studying to become a nurse, she worked as a student wellness promoter with the Thrive team, encouraging other students to maintain a healthy school-work-life balance and organizing events to promote social connections amongst her peers.

Learning how to become a teacher helped Sherry Wessel overcome her shyness. She will never forget meeting her cohort in person for the first time after the class had been studying together online for a year due to the pandemic. She is forever grateful for her group of friends, with whom she created lesson plans, shared laughs and vented to.

Macebearers

The mace is carried by a retiring member of the VIU community in recognition of their contributions and service to Vancouver Island University.

For a complete list of past macebearers, please visit viu.ca/convocation/macebearers.asp.

The students Dr. John Morgan met and taught, as well as the great friendships he made with colleagues, were highlights of his time at VIU. He often referred to his program as the RMOT (Resource Management Officer Technology) family, as many grads keep in touch. His advice to graduates: Life after graduation can be a winding road, but it is an opportunity to make those dreams you started pursuing in university come true. Believe in yourself, and with the support of family and friends, you can make it happen!

Seeing VIU Elders-in-Residence get recognized for the knowledge they share with a special faculty designation is a highlight of Sylvia Scow’s time at VIU. She is also proud of the ‘su’luqw’a’ Community Cousins Indigenous student mentorship program, which she started in 2011. Scow retired in April as Manager of Indigenous Protocol. Her advice to graduates: Ask questions and don’t be afraid to fail because there’s learning in that. And speak up even when your voice shakes.

Dr. Marni Stanley loves the conversations – planned or unplanned, short or long, fun or problem-oriented – that she has with the people who work and study at VIU. Stanley joined VIU in 1994 and has taught in and chaired the English and Studies in Women and Gender departments. She is currently Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Her advice to graduates: Give your brain lots of exercise, and that means learning to enjoy the difficult and the challenging and the frustrating.

Dr. Carol Stuart worked for VIU for almost 12 years, finishing her term as Provost and Vice-President Academic in July 2022. Spending time with Elders and watching them patiently work to make space for students and share their culture is a highlight of Stuart’s time at VIU. She also loved participating in six Tribal Journeys with VIU community members. Her advice to graduates: Embrace the joy and inspiration that happens when you engage in learning and you see the world differently.

The awarding of the Academic Emeritus Designation is intended to recognize retired faculty members, university librarians and scholars for significant contributions, exceptional service and outstanding achievement in teaching or support of teaching during their association with Vancouver Island University. This recognition gives the University the opportunity to keep highly productive members of the academic community engaged and contributing to the university and to academia.

Academic Emeritus Designation

A professor at VIU since 1992, Dr. Steven Earle was instrumental in developing and teaching many geology courses. During his tenure, Earle was known as an engaging professor who always had time for students and was constantly developing new ways to engage learners. He is the author of two Earth Science textbooks and an award-winning book on the geology of climate change.

Dr. John Lepage’s 30-year career at VIU was spent as an English professor and as Dean of Arts and Humanities. His fondest memories include watching the progress of his students and participating in the evolution of the university. Lepage remains a staunch defender of intellectual freedom and academic integrity, and he is committed to assessing and articulating the place of humanism in the modern university.

Les Malbon has been inspiring and engaging students at VIU since 1979. He retired in 2021. Long before there was an emphasis on interdisciplinary engagement, Indigenous ways of being and knowing, community collaboration and student wellness on university campuses, Malbon was weaving those concepts and experiences into his professional and personal life. In 2020, he was recognized with a Provost’s Award for Excellence in Teaching Design and Practice: Focus on Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being.

Dr. John Morgan has the dual honour of being a macebearer as well as receiving an academic emeritus designation at VIU’s 2023 convocation ceremonies. View his full bio on the Macebearer page.

A belief that business students learn more deeply through service learning in an interdisciplinary class context drove Management and Law Professor Dr. Robert (Bob) Willis to collaborate with sociology and criminology faculty to create the CommunityBased Applied Interdisciplinary Research program. Thanks to this program, students have worked with local organizations to conduct meaningful research in community since 2014. Willis worked at VIU for 15 years and is also known for his collegiality, attention to student learning and servant leadership.

The awarding of honorary degrees is intended to encourage a standard of excellence and innovation which is exemplary to students, faculty and staff, and to society in general. Vancouver Island University awards honorary degrees to publicly acknowledge members of society who exhibit a record of outstanding distinction and achievement in an area related to Vancouver Island University's mission, such as, but not limited to, scholarship, research, teaching, the creative arts, business and industry, international affairs or public service.

Honorary Degrees

Masako Fukawa Honorary Doctor of Laws

Masako Fukawa believes that if we do not redress historic wrongs, the same racist attitudes and actions will be repeated against others. Born in Prince Rupert, Fukawa was forcibly relocated as a child to an internment camp in Greenwood, BC. After retirement, she dedicated considerable time to documenting these racist acts of government on Japanese Canadians through books and educational resources for museums as well as teachers and students.

Honorary Doctor of Laws is awarded for accomplishments and contributions in areas such as politics, justice and social activism.

She co-authored Righting Canada’s Wrongs: Japanese Canadian Internment in the Second World War with Pamela Hickman in 2012. Her book Spirit of the Nikkei Fleet: BC’s Japanese Canadian Fishermen, co-authored with her husband Stanley Fukawa, was awarded the Canada-Japan Literary Award by the Canada Council. She has developed numerous resources for the BC Ministry of Education and maintains a website, japanesecanadianhistory.net. Her lifelong commitment to justice and the telling of the truth continues. Currently she serves on the Education Advisory Board of the Japanese Canadian Legacies initiatives of the BC government to redress these injustices. This work stems from an apology by the Premier of BC along with a commitment to fund legacy initiatives. Fukawa was also awarded the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013 for community service.

Fukawa’s connection to VIU runs deep. Since 2016, the Masako and Stanley Fukawa Scholarship and the Fukawa Excellence Scholarship have been awarded to students in the Faculty of Social Sciences. Fukawa, a teacher and then principal in Nanaimo school district, came to VIU (then Malaspina University-College) in 1995 to serve as Development Director, Secondary School with the International Education department. In this role, she developed The High School at the Nanaimo campus - an international school that still exists on campus today –and served as Founding Principal until her retirement in 1999.

Fukawa believes education plays a critical role in building healthier communities. “Teaching is never a neutral act,” she says. “All education is a political act. With knowledge and empathy, you have the power to be an integral part of creating a society you want to live in.”

Randle Jones

Honorary Doctor of Laws

As a business owner, volunteer and philanthropist, Randle Jones has been supporting Vancouver Island and BC communities for more than 50 years. Jones bought his first Windsor Plywood store in Surrey in 1965. Over the next several decades, he grew the business from a single store to a chain of 63 corporate and franchise locations across Western Canada and the Northwestern United States. All stores have a hands-on approach to management, emphasize a commitment to customer service and provide a large selection of specialty products that are selected to best serve their communities.

Jones and his wife, the late Fran Jones, worked hard to instill their philanthropic values and encourage each of the stores to get involved with their local community and give back in a variety of ways. In 2008, they created a fund at the Vancouver Foundation – the Windsor Plywood Foundation. Since its inception, more than $10 million has been granted to projects, charities and organizations in communities that Windsor Plywood stores serve. These grants range from large donations to health care and educational institutions to smaller grants to grassroots projects and charities. Jones is proud that many of the grant suggestions come from Windsor Plywood store owners and managers.

His impact on VIU includes supporting a variety of ongoing student awards, sponsoring the annual Milner Christmas Magic events at VIU’s Milner Gardens and Woodland, and supporting capital projects to help the University expand in key areas. Projects supported include the Centre for Health and Science and the Trades Discovery Centre, which bears the Windsor Plywood name. Both Randle and Fran were active volunteers at Milner Gardens (Randle is most proud of his role as the event parking attendant) and Fran was a founding member of the Milner Gardens and Woodland Society. Richard Johnston, former president of Malaspina University-College, describes Fran and Randle as “the hardest working and most credible and generous of any volunteers I have met throughout my 30-plus years at Malaspina.”

VIU's graduation convocation ceremony begins with the chancellor's procession making its way to the stage seating area at the front of the gymnasium, accompanied by the drumming of our Elders-in-Residence. Led by the macebearer, the chancellor’s procession consists of the chancellor, president, board chair, board members, deans, senior administrators, registrar and distinguished guests.

Ceremonial Convocation Pieces

Convocation Suite

VIU's Ceremonial Convocation Suite was created by world-renowned artist Arthur Vickers, OBC, DFA, and given by Coast Capital Savings to the University in May 2015 to support the two institutions' common goal of inspiring and celebrating the generations of VIU students, graduates and alumni. The suite also reflects a shared value of Coast Capital Savings and VIU — the belief in the power of education to change people's lives and build strong, vibrant communities. There are three distinct pieces in the Ceremonial Convocation Suite: the Chancellor's Chair, The Keeper of Wisdom and Knowledge; the President and ViceChancellor's Chair, The Keeper of Knowledge; and the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner Box (Huupukwanum), where the parchments are held before being bestowed upon the University's graduates.

The suite is an integral part of the University's convocation ceremony. The chancellor and president and vice-chancellor sit in the two chairs during the ceremony. During the ceremony, each graduate, after meeting the chancellor and president, is invited to touch the lid of the Ceremonial Parchment Bentcorner Box, marking the end of their VIU education and the beginning of the next chapter of their lives. Through this tradition they leave their imprint on the wood, symbolizing the impact and impression they will leave on VIU and weaving their stories together with those of all the graduates who came before them and all who will come after them.

When the ceremonial convocation pieces are not in use at VIU's convocation ceremonies they are on public display at the University's Nanaimo campus in the Welcome Centre (Building 300).

Paddle

The paddle that is carried in and out of the gymnasium by the President was given to the University by Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo when he was installed as VIU's first chancellor in 2008. During his installation celebrations, Chief Atleo presented a paddle to each of VIU's four campuses with the wish that they be used at special occasions, such as a graduation ceremony. The paddle given to the Nanaimo campus is a steering paddle, which helps guide us in our important journeys. It has

since become an important symbol and tradition in our convocation ceremonies. This paddle, made by Brian Bob, Qwuyutsapulth, of the Coast Salish/Ucluelet First Nation, is carved of yellow cedar and signifies teamwork, pulling together, like in a canoe. The salmon carved onto the blade represent journeys; salmon leave the place where they are hatched but return later in their lives, much in the same way that youth earn an education and then return home to bring their skills and knowledge back to their communities.

Coat of Arms

Granted in 1995, the coat of arms is used at VIU's convocation and on ceremonial documents such as parchments. It pays tribute to the University's West Coast location with eagles (representing wisdom), evergreens, mountains, sea and rivers. As well, it includes symbols that reflect the aspirations of higher learning – books outlined in gold symbolizing wealth, knowledge and understanding; and the sun, which symbolizes enlightenment and life. First Nations are honoured by the wreath and the red canoe, recognizing their sea-based culture.

Mace

During the Middle Ages, a metal-clad wooden mace was an effective weapon in battle. As newer and more powerful arms were developed, its military significance diminished, and it was transformed into a symbol of authority. Today, the ceremonial mace is used in many government assembly locations, such as the British and Canadian Houses of Parliament, and in university ceremonies such as this.

The mace used for VIU's convocation was designed and created by retired art instructor John A. Charnetski in 1994. The metre-long mace is made of stainless steel and gold-plated cast bronze. It features four guardian eagles and enameled medallions bearing VIU's coat of arms and arbutus emblems.

At convocation, the mace is carried in and out of the gymnasium by a retiring member of the VIU community.

13

Chancellor and President Regalia

Ceremonial regalia for Chancellor Cloy-e-iis, Dr. Judith Sayers and President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Deborah Saucier to wear at convocation ceremonies was designed in 2021 by Coast Salish clothing and art company Ay Lelum - The Good House of Design. The regalia was designed and made by three generations in the Good family.

Aunalee Boyd-Good, co-owner of Ay Lelum, says the regalia “fuse the formality of traditional convocation ceremony robes with beautiful elements of Coast Salish art, culture, history and tradition.”

The president’s robe features sea serpents on the front – symbols of power and wisdom – and a supernatural eagle on the back, which symbolizes strength and wisdom. The chancellor’s robe also features sea serpents on the front and on the back is a supernatural killer whale – designed to honour Cloy-e-iis' Nuu-Chah-Nulth heritage – and a supernatural eagle, figures that bring strength, power and vision.

14

Talking Stick

A Talking Stick was gifted by University of Victoria officials in spring 2022 to Chancellor Cloy-e-iis, Dr. Judith Sayers. Dr. Kevin Hall, UVic President and Vice-Chancellor, and Qwul’sih’yah’maht, Dr. Robina Thomas, UVic’s VicePresident, Indigenous, commissioned the creation of a Talking Stick and travelled to VIU in March 2022 to gift the stick to Cloy-e-iis. A Talking Stick was traditionally carved for a Chief to represent their position and prestige while they gave speeches at potlatches, in ceremonies, sacred events, as well as monumental and historical occasions.

The Talking Stick was carved by ts'usqinuxun’, William Good, a Hereditary Chief and Master Carver from Snuneymuxw First Nation. He carved the Talking Stick as a representation of Cloy-e-iis' lineage and customs while she is doing the work of chancellor. It is carved in the traditional Coast Salish style from Snuneymuxw to honour Cloy-e-iis and her position in Coast Salish communities.

Despite ts'usqinuxun’ being from the Eagle Clan and not of the Thunderbird Clan himself, he carved a thunderbird with lightning snakes for Cloy-e-iis’ Nuu-Chah-Nulth heritage, as would be customary to do as a carver with the teachings and understanding between Hereditary Chiefs. There is a grey whale to represent the significance of Nuu-Chah-Nulth whalers and a killer whale to represent Cloy-e-iis' journey as chancellor and to give her strength. The halibut and salmon were carved to represent the richness and great wealth of culture that she brings to VIU.

Regalia

Like most universities in North America, Vancouver Island University uses regalia that represents graduates’ credential level and area of study.

Diploma and certificate graduates wear a basic black cap and black bachelor’s gown.

Advanced diploma, post-degree diploma, graduate diploma and graduate certificate graduates wear a basic black cap and black bachelor’s gown as well as a stole in the colour of their faculty.

Bachelor degree graduates wear a basic black cap and black bachelor’s gown as well as a coloured hood edged in white draped over their shoulders. The hood colour indicates the graduate’s area of study.

Master’s degree graduates wear a basic black cap and black master’s gown as well as a coloured hood lined in grey draped over their shoulders. The hood colour indicates the graduate’s program or area of study.

After the Ceremony

Join other alumni, faculty and staff members and guests for a reception in the main cafeteria – your first VIU alumni event! This is a great opportunity to celebrate with your classmates, instructors and guests. The reception is free for all graduating students and their guests.

A commemorative backdrop and photographer will be set up to take free pictures of you with your friends and family. These pictures will then be posted online at the VIU Alumni Association’s Facebook page (facebook.com/viuaa).

The Campus Store will also have commemorative parchment frames and other souvenirs for sale at the reception.

Welcome Alumni

Congratulations and welcome to the Vancouver Island University Alumni Association – a growing community of more than 75,000 graduates making a difference around the world!

As a graduate you aren’t leaving VIU, you are joining the alumni family. And like any proud family, we want to celebrate your successes and brag about you to our friends! So please, keep in touch and let us know where your VIU education takes you.

The Alumni Association is happy to help you:

• Share your news and achievements with other alumni, current students and your instructors.

• Re-establish old friendships and start new ones.

• Make connections with other people currently in your field.

• Gain access to special group rates and exclusive products and services through the alumni benefit program. Download the Alumni Perks app at viu.alumni-perks.com to access these benefits.

Under the University Act of British Columbia, Vancouver Island University has a bicameral governance structure. The role of the Board of Governors and the Senate is that of strategic oversight, setting overall vision and strategic direction.

The Board of Governors is responsible for overseeing the administrative and business affairs of the University, including finances and property.

The Senate has responsibility for the academic matters of the university and offers advice to the Board where academic matters interface with matters of business.

The Alumni Association provides an opportunity for all alumni to engage and connect with their alma mater to support the success of the University and students through mentoring, capital projects, scholarships and other activities.

The VIU Foundation's sole purpose is to support the growth and success of VIU. Because the Foundation is a separately registered charitable organization, all gifts made to the Foundation benefit VIU.
