Chamber Distributes Over 3/4 of a Million Dollars to Retro Group On Friday, June 9th the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce distributed refund checks to local businesses totaling over 3/4 of a million dollars. This money was a result of the Chamber’s L&I Retro Rating John McDonagh Program. Before you Greater Vancouver read too much into this (and in answer to Chamber of Commerce the question you’re CEO/President asking) about “why” the Chamber is giving businesses almost a Photo by million dollars, note it said “distributKate Singh ed.” The reality is, it was originally their money which was paid to the State of Washington as Workers’ Compensation Insurance Premiums. Those receiving refund checks are members of the GVCC’s Retrospective Rating program for manufacturers. Over the last three years this group of 55 businesses worked diligently to maintain a safe work environment for their workforce and in doing so, kept claims to a minimum. They also provided injured workers with programs
that aided their return to work keeping claims costs low. In fact, compared to other manufacturing groups in the state, the GVCC member companies performed the best. Our participants received a refund 22% higher than any other Manufacturing group in Washington. The GVCC has two additional L&I programs, one for Medical Offices/Clinics and one for Retail/Professional and Administrative Service businesses. The Chamber’s program is successful due to our focus on safety. Scott Croucher, our Retro Plans Administrator, has over thirty years of experience and focuses on these four elements: 1. Exceptional workplace safety. 2. Understanding and following Labor & Industry guidelines. 3. Providing safety training for all employees, and 4. Utilizing available return-to-work programs. Membership organizations are constantly looking for ways to provide return on investment to their members. For the GVCC it is tremendously rewarding to be able to work with our members in these Retro-Rating Groups to not only do what we can to assure a refund, but in doing so, help each of
the members lower their L&I premium year after year. If you are in one of these sectors and not receiving a refund on your L&I premium, contact us. Each GVCC member in our Retro program undergoes an initial safety audit and comprehensive site visit before enrollment. If you are interested, we can set up an audit to get you qualified. If you are interested in learning more about it, you can attend our next Retro Program Workshop on:

Two Important Events on the Horizon 7/13 Waterfront & 7/19 Legislative Review
Don Russo PAC Co-Chairman Schwabe Williamson & Wyatt
It has been a busy but inconclusive time during the second special session in Washington. The budget and many other issues are left in flux. On the bright side, Governor Inslee did sign a measure that would revive plans to replace the I-5 Bridge over the Columbia River that has long been a subject of heated debate. Hopefully this action will demonstrate Washington’s commitment to restarting discussions with our neighbors to the south and get serious about the traffic issues plaguing northsouth interstate transit. Additionally, the Governor signed House Bill 1593 that will create new ways for small businesses to obtain capital. The Association of Washington Businesses backed bill enacts simplifications in the process and encourages more investors to support small businesses by investing in them, and allowing entrepreneurs access to capital while protecting privacy of investors.

Chairman of the Board
Chamber Can Unify the Business Community
To this end, in May the Chamber Board and President/CEO John McDonagh held a day long retreat focused on how we need to evolve to continue to provide value to members, while also attracting a new generation of members. Kris Johnson, President of the Association of Washington Businesses (AWB), travelled from Olympia to present to us on this topic. The presentation, titled Horizon Initiatives: Chamber 2025 covered a nationwide study on how Chambers are evolving to meet the needs of their community, as well as specifics on how AWB – which serves as the Chamber of Commerce for Washington – has specifically applied these lessons. The presentation was followed by a productive discussion of how the Chamber can continue to best serve the needs of the business community and community overall. We are fortunate to be living in a region that continues to grow and thrive. The Chamber is well
placed to be part of deciding and designing what we want this community to be. While many parts of the community or politics become more fragmented, the chamber remains one of the rare entities that can bring citizens, business and government together. Business helps solve problems for clients every day. We offer a unique insight in how to attract or engage customers which may apply to other parts of building community engagement. An opportunity to design and align the entrepreneurial activities of the region is the sort of project which appeals to younger generations. These groups do not currently engage with community groups as much, but do express a strong desire to be involved, solve problems, and address specific causes. The day-long session was a great start to the discussion we continue to have around growing the value of current members, and expand our offering to other groups.

While the Chamber’s staff and Board of Directors continue to improve and execute on our current member services, we also realize it is important to look toward the future.

GVCC Hosts techCONNECT, Career Directed Learning Day for 35 Students at the Port The Chamber’s techCONNECT program hosted its second site visit at the Port of Vancouver on May 31st. The GVCC welcomed 35 students from the MESA program at Fort Vancouver High School for a day of career directed learning. A post-visit survey revealed that 61.5% of the students said this event changed their thoughts on their future. The techCONNECT program directly connects local students with area employers to learn about career opportunities, with the goal of driving our young talent towards in-demand jobs within our community. These students heard directly from the Chamber, United Grain, a Riverboat Captain, and finally, networked with Port of Vancouver employees including a female engineer. This was a day of value and impact for students as they were first given a soft skills workshop before they met with tenants and employees of the Port of Vancouver. Special thank you to sponsors: Banfield Pet Hospital, SEH America, Chickfil-A, and partners: SW WA STEM Network, DIY Marketing Center, Webfor, Port of Vancouver, The Columbian, nConnect, and Vancouver Public Schools.

Sold Out Golf Tournament Surprises and Delights After 15 Years The GVCC’s 15th Annual Golf Tournament sponsored by Columbia Bank was SOLD OUT and featured some new, fun and exciting elements this year. The morning started off at Lewis River with a complimentary Bloody Mary Bar and contest for the best Bloody Mary with a $100 Gift Certificate to Mill Creek Pub, won by Dominick Devito. Brian Kidd, the “Unipiper,” was on his unicycle playing bagpipes with flames and lending a bit of nostalgia to golf’s heritage. This year, we had our first ever ebay auction for a chance to golf with the “Big Duffer” John McDonagh, CEO of the GVCC. This also came with a VIP experience. Their VIP stretch golf cart was decked out in the iQ plaid and loaded down with swag. We also had a “Celebrity Caddie” Billy Henry (NWABA) and following along behind was the “Pro Caddie” Chris Acosta from Comcast. Leading the VIP cart (and other golfers) out onto the course was the Unipiper with bagpipes going and flames blazing. It is not every golf tournament that you get a send-off like that. Lunch was sponsored by CenturyLink along with souvenir golf towels. Raffle items were top notch and provided by our many member businesses. It was a “wet” tournament but that did not hinder the fun, excitement or scores. 1st place men’s - The VIP Team of “Big Duffer” John McDonagh, Russ Garrow, Adam Roselli and Greg Peterson. 2nd place men’s – De La Torre Wealth Strategies. 1st place mixed – Columbia Bank. 2nd place mixed – Pacific Continental Bank. 1st Women’s – Colliers International.

“Always great to connect with those in the local business community...I now have resources to refer those who have been injured at work and need PT &/or OT, where I can order and pickup groceries at my leisure, where to research my next car, who can competently handle small business accounting needs, who can print local small business clients’ marketing materials, which organization needs me to speak about branding at their next event, who to refer if someone needs a roof repair or has a major catastrophe that requires clean up, which well written (& well-read) local business publication to advertise an upcoming event in, which hotel to send out of town visitors to and where to go with girlfriends for a post work sip. All that in under 1.5 hours. That’s
what I call successful networking.”
