GREATER VANCOUVER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
VISION
FROMTHE THECEO GVCC CEO FROM
John McDonagh
GVCC, CEO/President
Moving Your Business Forward Seems everyone I talk with is as busy as or busier than ever. Projects, appointments, and meetings… the list is endless. Those busy schedules mean some members aren’t able to make Chamber events. If they aren’t able to make the events then how do they justify their membership? Let me share with you one way the Chamber provides busy members with an ROI. You all were mailed your complimentary copy of the printed member directory with the last VISION Magazine. That print directory has an online version which lives on the Chamber website at vancouverusa.com/list. All active members are searchable and have the opportunity to build out a business profile providing much more than the contact information in the print directory. Here is the punchline, your Chamber website is accessed over 28,000 times per month and the majority of those visiting the website are headed straight to the member directory. That is nearly one thousand visits per day. By building out your business profile through your Member Information Center (MIC)
login, you can share information about your business with those searching the directory, provide highlights of services or specialties, and better yet, provide multiple links that redirect viewers to your website.
How many of those 28,000 visitors a month are going to your listing? You can find out by creating that MIC login on the Chamber site. Once logged in, you can see your business’s traffic, for instance how many actual visits to your listing and how many clicks through to your website. It is a powerful tool in a robust website. Change and update the information there as often as you like - at no charge. A few members contacted recently were lamenting their inability to attend events and were considering dropping their membership. We were able to point out the activity their listing was receiving through the online directory, and they just couldn’t walk away from that additional exposure. We are committed to Moving Business Forward and the online member directory is just one of the ways we can help.
FROM THE CHAIR
Amy O’Hara
GVCC, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors
We Like To Have Fun I am a big proponent of having fun. The Chamber is committed to serving the area business community in many ways; support, education, advocacy, networking opportunities and more. Also, we also like to have FUN! The ribbon cuttings are great, (thank you Barb and Ambassadors!) and if you haven’t been to a Business After Hours in a while, you need to get one on your calendar pronto. June, however, makes me smile because it means the arrival of one of our signature events: The GVCC’s Annual Golf Tournament! Talk about fun. This tournament will be our 17th year with Columbia Bank presenting this exciting event and this year’s theme is everything Star Wars. It has even been billed with May The Course Be With You! Golfers have been invited to dress up in their favorite Star Wars attire, sponsors will have themed tee displays
and contests, and all are invited to enjoy Cantina drinks along the way. There will be awards given for best team costume as well as a best player costume. This has become an extremely popular event for Southwest Washington and this year promises to live up to the reputation. I have been asked many times how I ended up owning shoe stores and do you know how? As a young woman, I took a temporary job selling shoes for Nordstrom and, I thought it was really FUN so I stayed. Now I am here amongst you fine people! My method is to work hard, be dedicated, reach for more, and most of all to remember to have fun along the way. So I hope to see you all at Lewis River Golf Course on June 6th because I am confident we’ll be having…FUN! “I know. Somehow, I’ve always known.” - Princess Leia

Since 2017, Pain Relief Partners has been an excellent resource for individuals in our community looking for nonnarcotic pain relief therapies of many kinds. The team at Pain Relief Partners offers unique care in a one-on-one setting to assess an individual’s needs in a personalized manner. Looking at the patient’s history, examination results, and studies based on their assessment, the team then creates a customized treatment plan for each person who steps through their doors. Some of the conditions Pain Relief Partners focuses on include back pain, restless leg syndrome, scoliosis management, fibromyalgia, headaches, migraines, and many more. The treatments that Pain Relief Partners administer vary on the patients’ needs, however, are all non-narcotic. The goal at Pain Relief Partners is that of “effectively providing hope for healing and increased quality of life to our patients.”
Erika Laws, of Impactful Sales Solutions, had an idea turn reality when molding her passions and hard work together. AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT
Marcy Sprecher
ROCKSOLID COMMUNITY TEEN CENTER Marcy Sprecher is a well-known and appreciated community activist in the Battle Ground community, where Marcy grew up and has raised her family. A graduate of Battle Ground High School herself, the youth hold a special place in her heart. Marcy feels all kids deserve to be valued and supported, which eventually led her to volunteer at the non-profit Rocksolid Community Teen Center. She joined the staff there in 2006 and is now the Rocksolid Executive Director. Under her guidance, the 2019 Rocksolid Lucky Shamrock Dinner & Auction set records for attendance and funds raised. Marcy has been a cheerleader and champion for North County businesses for many years, building relationships and encouraging others to grow and prosper in Battle Ground. Her enthusiasm and networking abilities are amazing to watch. She connects with people of all walks with grace and kindness. People know they can trust her to help if needed, and that she is a person of her word. Her sense of humor, as well as wise counsel, makes her an allaround perfect fit for our North County Ambassador team. We are very fortunate to have her join this amazing group of volunteers and are very proud of her commitment to give back to Her community.
Harold Faires
WENDEL FAMILY DENTAL CENTRE Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Harold Faires grew up in Aloha, Oregon and moved to Vancouver in 1980. He is very familiar with how small businesses operate as his parents owned a bakery growing up. Starting at the age of 12 Harold worked in the bakery as a doughnut fryer for many years. Professionally, Harold spent 28 years of his career working for Xerox, then in 2004 accepted a Marketing and Employee Benefits position at Wendel Family Dental Centre. Harold is a dedicated Portland Timbers fan and has held season tickets for the past ten years. His idea vacation is going to Hawaii, relaxing and soaking up the sun. He suggests everyone travel alone once in a while as it’s been a great experience for him. Harold was invited to join the GVCC Ambassador Team in 2016 and was named the GVCC Ambassador Rookie of the Year in 2017. He enjoys being a “Red Coat” as he receives firsthand knowledge about the new and current businesses in Clark County. Harold has been a great asset to our team, always there when needed with his warm smile and a handshake to offer! Watch for him at the next event, at nearly 6’ 7” he is heads above the rest. In her previous role at the Western United States Agricultural Trade Association (WUSATA), Janet created the foundation to ensure all aspects of strategy, planning, marketing, communications, program leadership, as well as administrative operations were in line with the organization’s goals. Throughout her tenure, the organization became the industry’s example of best practices for program governance and was often asked to mentor struggling industry organizations to install strong program management. “As a proud resident of Vancouver, Washington and a champion of economic development, I am honored to have the opportunity to work with an exceptional team and a diverse set of industry stakeholders to help grow the GVCC and to help area businesses meet the challenges of the next decade,” says Janet. “I’m looking forward to bringing the work of this essential organization to more businesses in our community.” As Vice President of Operations & Membership, Janet will oversee the Chamber’s programming and internal operations, creating a structured process for the organization to strengthen what we do best. NCONNECT
Highlight Your Industry CONNECTING LEARNING WITH CAREERS
Businesses looking to identify and engage their future workforce can rely on nConnect. nConnect utilizes strategy discussions to assist companies in their efforts to build a collaborative relationship, with local schools to provide career preparatory experiences for students. These nConnect facilitated experiences help partner companies create a pathway for students to local careers. By working with nConnect, employees actively involved in the local economy are given opportunities to show their workplaces, share their insights, offer hands-on activities and describe the skills and education needed to thrive in their industry. These events build social capital with students looking for future employment and with communities under represented within the professional communities. Partner businesses in our community are eager to work alongside nConnect: “We were able to give the students hands-on industry experience, and mentorship. Just as important, it allowed us to see the student’s capabilities and work ethic, which enhanced our onboarding process. Our experience with nConnect is one that will continue for years to come.” – Chuck Richards, ADS Washougal

Connecting with Our Future Workforce WORKFORCE SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON
Here’s my favorite new statistic when discussing today’s labor market: Every minute, nearly seven Baby Boomers turn 65. A fifth of our regional workforce is over age 55 and could retire within the next decade. Most Baby Boomers know what it was like to have a summer job or part-time job in high school, but most kids today have not been so lucky, and consequently aren’t being properly prepared for their careers. Workforce Southwest Washington (WSW) knows this, and is developing programs to help address this critical segment of our labor market. Under the leadership of WSW, in partnership with Partners in Careers, WorkSource, nConnect, Goodwill, Columbia River Economic Development Council, Cowlitz Economic Development Council, Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, Kelso Longview Chamber of Commerce, SW WA Stem Network, Lakeside Industries, LiUNA, Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust Fund and the District Council of Laborers, the third annual Youth Employment Summit (YES) is in the bag and was an outstanding success. WSW, which invests $7 to $9 million each year of public funds to help businesses find employees and job seekers to find work, partnered with many local organizations to host YES. With a focus on technology, healthcare, manufacturing, construction and first jobs, more than 65 employers and union representatives staffed display booths with many of the tools of their trades, and offered more than
400 high school juniors and seniors opportunities to learn about some of the careers offered by these employers. In addition, Partners in Careers arranged volunteers to conduct mock
Every minute, nearly seven Baby Boomers turn 65. interviews with students looking for their first jobs. WSW’s new youth-oriented career and employment center, NEXT opened last year with much acclaim for the value it provides to employ-
ment candidates from ages 16-24 and the employers who hire these candidates. NEXT, in addition to the typical employment center resources, provides showers, lockers, a kitchen and other facilities and resources to help “couch surfers” and other residencechallenged youth succeed in finding their first jobs or better paying jobs as they start their work careers. On Wednesday, May 29th, NEXT will be hosting a manufacturingfocused youth hiring event, bringing around 5 selected area manufacturers together with high school seniors who are interested, motivated and prepared to interview for full-time positions with these manufacturers. Please call or email John LeMarte at 360.735.5060, or JLemarte@esd. wa.gov if you want to learn more about this event, or would like to be considered to participate. I have written about the SummerWorks youth internship program in past issues. SummerWorks is a summer internship program, funded by WSW, to provide motivated and prescreened youth, ages 16-21 in Clark, Cowlitz and Wahkiakum counties with opportunities to get 90 hours of work experience and mentoring over the summer with great employers. The SummerWorks program handles payroll, covers wages, insurance and taxes for 90 hours of work with your company and you get potential new hires to introduce to your company. 5 Things
You Really Need to Know
NETWORKING 101
How to make networking a great strategy for building your business:
1.
Networking is more than facetime at meetings; it's about getting to know others. Just showing up and passing out cards at meetings isn't enough. Effective networking includes getting to know other people and creating actual relationships.
2.
Where (and with whom) you network matters. When you .network, you are looking to create relationships. This means getting to know lots of people (and not just your prospects). Widen your scope to meet potential referral partners, who can send you business. Even peers or colleagues should be on your list, because you may be able to partner on large projects. Or at the very least, refer prospects who are not a good fit for you.
3.
Networking is not speed selling. Not every person you meet is a prospect, but nearly every person you meet can be a valuable part of your
network. Do the math: The most valuable person in your network is not the one person who buys from you, but the one who refers qualified prospects to you.
4.
It is your responsibility to connect at events. If self-consciousness or shyness keeps you cowering on the sidelines, learn introvert-friendly or newbie strategies that help you expand your comfort zone.
5.
Be prepared to speak clearly, concisely, and positively about what you do. But don't talk too much, because attention spans are short! Say only what you want your listeners to hear and remember. Are you an introvert, new to networking, or wonder why your networking isn't working? Learn easy networking strategies at Networking for Newbies on Friday, May 17 at the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce. RSVP: http://tiny.cc/newbs GREATER VANCOUVER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
