TECHNOLOGY TALK 2015
Google’s mobile update impacts all businesses: Website Ranking Changed Kevin Getch, Founder + Director of Digital Strategy, Webfor
Have you noticed a change in traffic to your website? On April 21, Google unveiled its mobile-friendliness algorithm, giving preference to websites that are optimized for mobile devices. It has always been in Google’s best interests to show users the pages that most meet their needs. With mobile searches overtaking desktop in many industries, mobilefriendly websites now serve the majority. This update has the power to change the way a major search engine shows users your website and information. Sites that were not mobile-optimized by the time this update occurred may have been penalized in search results on mobile devices. If you have never considered updating your website, or have been putting the decision off, there is no longer any doubt: now is the time to take action.
is viewing them. Users do not need to zoom in or out to view the information on your page; it will always present in the perfect size and shape for their devices. I always recommend this choice, as it offers the most seamless experience and Google’s nod of approval. ● Adaptive Design. This type of design also provides a mobile-friendly experience regardless of device. However, in this case, a server sends a different HTML or CSS code, specific to the device on which your site is viewed. ● Mobile site. This option offers a separate version of your site that shows up when users on mobile devices search for you. These sites use your current URL but utilize varied HTML to present the correct version of your site to users,
How Can I Tell If I Need to Go Mobile? Google is intent on making this update as clear and easy to prepare for as possible. Using their mobile-friendliness tool, you can determine whether or not your site is mobile-ready. If not, and if your site has been verified through Google Analytics, you can also view what percentage of your current traffic comes from mobile devices. If that number accounts for more than a third of your current users, the April 21 update could already be costing you a significant portion of your traffic and web conversions. Optimizing your site for mobile puts you in an excellent position to gain more qualified traffic, which will lead to greater exposure and more money in your pocket. What Are My Options? For most websites, there are three acceptable choices. These include: ● Responsive design. Responsive sites change shape to suit the dimensions of the device on which your user

whether they are on desktop or mobile. By updating your website to be mobile friendly, you are not only making a solid investment in your online presence, but creating a better user experience for your customers, which will lead to more sales. If you want your business to achieve top ranking in search results, it’s go-mobile time.

funding sources for small business Financing can be one of the most challenging obstacles an entrepreneur has to overcome when starting or expanding a business. Many business owners need to look beyond their own financial resources to find funding. These sources can include family and friends, venture capital financing, business loans, grants, and crowdfunding.

Financing Your small business
SBA Offers programs to Help Small Businesses Grow W
hat does SBA offer to small business owners? The programs are many and varied, and the qualifications for each are specific. SBA can help facilitate a loan for you with a third party lender, guarantee a bond, or help you find venture capital. Understanding how SBA works is the first step towards receiving assistance. SBA provides a number of financial assistance programs for small businesses that have been specifically designed to meet key financing needs, including debt financing, surety bonds, and equity financing.
• Revolving funds based on the value of existing inventory and receivables, under special conditions • To purchase equipment, machinery, furniture, fixtures, supplies or materials • To purchase real estate, including land and buildings • To construct a new building or renovate an existing building • To establish a new business or assist in the acquisition, operation or expansion of an existing business • To refinance existing business debt, under certain conditions
The 7(a) Loan Program, SBA’s most common loan program, includes financial help for businesses with special requirements. SBA provides loan guarantees through participating lenders; so the requirements of eligibility are based on specific aspects of the business and its principals. As such, the key factors of eligibility are based on what the business does to receive its income, the character of its ownership and where the business operates.
If you have put a solid business plan together and believe that you are ready to present your loan application to a lender, a list of active lenders who work with SBA can be found at: www.sba. gov/OR. This lenders list is regularly updated and posted near the bottom of the District website. Note: Not all lenders do all types of lending, so it may be worthwhile to work with your small business advisor or an SBA lender relations specialist to focus your efforts.
• To provide long-term working capital to use to pay operational expenses, accounts payable and/or to purchase inventory • Short-term working capital needs, including seasonal financing, contract performance, construction financing and exporting

share’s ida program
S
hare’s Individual Development Account (IDA) Program is designed to help residents of Clark County to save money for a future asset – like starting or expanding a small business, a down payment on a home, or pursuing higher education. Starting or Expanding a Small Business: The IDA program encourages participants to save up to $2,000 and then provides a 2:1 match of their savings when program requirements have been met. Up to $6,000 can be used to purchase qualified expenses to start small business or expand an existing one. Qualified expenses include acquiring a small business license and permits and buying businessrelated equipment. How the Program Works: Applicants must have earned income at 200% of the Federal Poverty Level or below. A link to 2015 Federal Poverty Guidelines is available on our website. Applicants who meet income requirements agree to deposit a minimum of $50 every month in a restricted savings account at a local bank. Participants must make consistent monthly deposits for at least

here was a time when struggling small businesses need only share their story with the banker when they applied for a loan to get them through a rough patch. With so many traditional streams of revenue running dry, turning to KickStarter or CrowdTilt has become more and more common for small businesses. And their stories are made very public. My friend in McMinnville, Oregon, asked her community to get behind her little toy store and vote for it with their dollars. She told them of challenges she was facing and plans she had to grow her business and be of more service to her community. Then she launched her CrowdTilt.

Locally-owned businesses raise the property values in their communities not only through taxes, but by making neighborhoods more desirable places to live — where, as my McMinnville friend said, community and commerce are two sides of the same coin. She used her CrowdTilt as a wake-up call to her community, and she got the conversation started about the difference between cost and price. Consumers are bombarded with the message of low price all the time. But when their money leaves town, what’s the cost? How do you replace the money that could have supported your local roads, fire and police services, parks and schools? My friend didn’t just whisper all this to a banker. She opened herself up to her whole town, and they rallied behind her because they knew they had a thing of great value in her business. That’s the conversation that can begin with crowdfunding. Maybe a lack of traditional business loans isn’t such a bad thing, after all.
FINDING FUNDING FOR YOUR NEW BUSINESS: FAMILY, FRIENDS, ANGELS AND VENTURE CAPITALISTS
G
enerally, the funding event is one of the most important events in the early stages of any business. Preparing for it and documenting everything properly is critical, and requires the guidance of an experienced attorney. At our firm, we know what it’s like raising money for a business, because we’ve done it ourselves. In addition to an entrepreneur’s own money, if any, there are generally three possible sources of funding available to someone starting a new company. Family and friends: Founders of a business often borrow money from friends and family to start their new business venture. Usually, the amount available is relatively small, but still enough to allow the business to sustain itself in its early developmental stages. Angel investors: These are affluent individuals who provide capital to start-ups in exchange for an interest in the company. Because family and friends may only provide a few hundred thousand dollars, and because most venture capitalists won’t invest in companies under $1 or $2 million, angel investors are an excellent source of “gap filling” capital. They can provide the second round of financing and get you to the venture capital stage. Venture capital: For companies with a lot of growth potential, venture capital funding may be available. A VC firm invests in a company and often supplies not only money, but technical and managerial expertise as well. VCs only invest in companies that meet their strict requirements, and we can help you present your business in the best possible light. We help business owners make contacts with investors, present their business to them and secure the capital they need. Our extensive network of business contacts and our excellent reputation as a business law firm works to the advantage of our clients in all kinds of business transactions. Meet Jeannet Santiago, Small Business Counselor Can you tell us a bit about your background? I was an entrepreneur since the earlier 2000s. I got my start in the design and marketing industry. I opened up a design company, which flourished into a publication called Latino Perspective which highlighted Latino entrepreneurs in the Portland metropolitan area and their empowering and inspirational stories. I sold the publication in 2004 to move on to things outside of my comfort zone that would help me grow as a person, like, self-employment, sales, media, and advertising. What is the GVCC program you work for now? The Small Business Assistance Program (SBAP), which is part of the Business Resource Center at the Chamber. It is in its first
year, funded through the Chamber and a block grant administered by the City of Vancouver. It’s meant to support small businesses whose owners meet mid to low household income requirements and live in Vancouver or have a business within city limits. It focuses on technical assistance for businesses such as: business plans, marketing plans, sales strategies, and how to obtain permits, and certificates. What is your position within the Small Business Assistance Program? I assess where the client’s business standing is, and see where its needs are. The ultimate goal is to increase revenue, retain jobs, and benefit the overall economy within the City of Vancouver. Qualifying applicants will also receive support from SBAP partners such as the Chamber, Small Business Development Council, SCORE of Vancouver, Share, and OAMI, among others. I will also assess if businesses can utilized our Procurement and Technical Assistance Center (PTAC)- which has to do with assisting businesses who are interested in providing products or services to governmental agencies. Because of my entrepreneurial background, I’ve learned a lot of lessons that have helped me, and this benefits my clients because we can share ex-
periences, and come to a better understanding of the most effective ways to strategize business goals. What is the goal for the Small Business Assistance Program? We will work with businesses to increase business revenue and job retention in order to benefit the overall economy here in Vancouver. The GVCC team hopes that the Chamber will become a sort of hub for businesses in Clark County, to assist those businesses not only with networking, advocacy, growth, and collaboration, but with technical assistance as well. Where members and non-members can come for resources and support where they need it. Our ultimate goal is to continue to serve and assist small businesses in Vancouver next year, and for years to come.

Making “old” new again: Luepke Flowers and Finds SECOND DOWNTOWN BUSINESS FOR BRUNO AMICCI Left: Bruno Amicci with partner Kerry Kurth.
Bruno Amicci, new owner of Luepke Flowers and Finds, answers our questions about his plans for the iconic building and the draw of doing business in downtown Vancouver. Q: As a former Hewlett Packard employee and founder of Triad Technology Group in Portland, what motivated you to get into the service industry with Low Bar, and now Luepke Florist? A: I started Low Bar with some folks with prior bar experience to create a mellow place to come and hang out. I saw the potential for downtown Vancouver then, and I see it now. It’s very exciting. Q: What would you like the local business community to know about you? A: How humbled and grateful I am at the warm welcome and acceptance by the community. This is my time to give back and I am looking forward to making good friends and good times! Q: Tell us about the staff at Luepke. A: I couldn’t do Luepke Flowers without my staff. Jill Campbell is bigger than life awesome and the best business development manager I could have hired. Tamara Szarowski is a great manager and floral designer. She was a legacy employee and watching her bloom (pun intended) when I told her she could just be excellent and not have to worry about some design book is a joy to behold. Red Williams is an uber talented designer and wedding specialist who loves coming to work and infuses the studio with laughter. Kerry Kurth is my partner in this enterprise. The most talented designed I know and a wonderful human being. Exquisite taste and ability to put things together. I could not have gone forward without her. These are the guys who are making it happen. I just provide the means. Q: What do you plan to carry forward of Luepke’s 100+ year legacy and what will be new? A: I meet so many people when I’m out delivering flowers who tell me great stories about Luepke from the 50’s and 60’s. One lady said “If the flowers came from Luepke, you knew they were special”….and that’s become my motto. Provide the best and most beautiful arrangements. Provide the best service possible. And engage the community with events for kids, and for seniors, and for moms, and for dads, and for high school sweethearts.
Below: Images of the new Luepke Flowers and Finds
Q: What are your visions for Leupke Station? A: I envision Luepke Station as a destination spot for downtown. A place to shop, eat, drink, and relax with friends. We are looking at serving coffee and pastries in the showroom. We’ll also be doing art and sip events and floral design classes so a wine bar is in the works. We’re planning on a tap room next door with an outdoor covered seating area, fire pit, and four food carts. In the warehouse where I store my 1930 Ford Model A Roadster I am planning a 1930’s themed garage entrance that gives way to a speakeasy with a craft distiller in what used to be the boiler room. Lots of ambiance and character. Q: What excites you about your location in downtown Vancouver? A: We have great name recognition and visibility on a busy street, and we have plenty of free parking, and still within the Arts District. It’s an ideal location for people to walk or bike to and I am hoping to start seeing more bicycle traffic. Q: What advice would you give to others looking to invest in downtown Vancouver? A: The time is now.
Q: What drew you to the Luepke building? A: It took a while for the vision to come into focus. Somewhere deep down inside I always wanted to own a flower shop. I can’t explain it. It’s creating beauty on a daily basis. The building itself is gorgeous with its clean lines and large round window. I wanted to save the Luepke sign and pay homage to a Vancouver icon since 1909.

Q: You’re said to have a fascination with the 1930s, if you could talk to one person from that era, who would it be? A: Eleanor Roosevelt, without question. One of the most fascinating people of the 1930’s Her influence on this country during the 30’s and her vision for a humane society brought about the enormous growth of the middle class we saw in the 1950’s. I would be honored. Q: Do you have any business philosophies that are consistent among your various endeavors? A: I have been fortunate to have had a career doing what I love. That is the key to success Q: Do you believe there is some sort of pattern or formula to becoming a successful entrepreneur? A: Work hard, keep your nose clean, work hard. Focus on the customer. Q: What has been the most satisfying part about this new venture? A: I’m a lifetime learner and this has been a vertical learning curve… learning all about the flower industry, renovating the building, and learning about the history and impact of Luepke Florist over the last 106 years plus meeting some great folks along the way…from City Hall, to the Chamber of Commerce, to the VDA, and
