HOW CORPORATE TRAININGS CAN BE UTILIZED AS A MARKETING & COMMUNITY GIVING TOOL GVCC member “BBSI: Business Management Solutions for Small Business” takes a unique approach to corporate training events. They’ve become a marketing tool and they are part of the annual strategy of BBSI. The training events are opened first to existing and potential clients with special invitations. Most recently, they hosted Scott Burnett (attorney), who spoke to business owners about the proper way to protect LLC’s and Corporation’s assets. “This last seminar changed lives. Literally. We had an owner in the room who had been in business for more than thirty years. She had no idea that she was handling her LLC incorrectly the entire time, leaving both her business and personal assets exposed and in danger. Following our two-hour session, she was on her way to protecting herself and equipped to do things correctly. That makes me feel good. Those are the results I care about,” explained Sawyer.

In addition to Scott Burnett, BBSI has hosted speaker: Ronnie Noize in a seminar focused on marketing and advertising for small business owners. They’ve also hosted a seminar with Jodi Blackwood who specializes in proper business etiquette. Overall they try to keep it educational focused for the small-to-mid sized businesses. REWARD AND RECOGNITION: THE IMPORTANCE OF APPRECIATION CAROL

Studies have found that the PARKER number one reason employees remain at their organizations, WALSH SILPADA more than salary, benefits, DESIGNS technology, or even promotion opportunities, is appreciation. Employee achievements and/or performance improvement is a critical part of performance management. Recognition must be sincere, honest, simple, and not time/labor intensive. A good reward and recognition program will be cost-effective and valuable to increasing employee morale, productivity, and profits; while also lowering turnover, absenteeism, and stress. An effective program will reinforce desired behaviors and model the behavior others will follow. In essence these programs involve the informal or formal acknowledgement of a person’s or team’s behavior or effort that supports your organization’s goals and values. A culture of appreciation fuels a sense of unity and mission that is essential for retaining and motivating employees. It’s important to know the tastes and interests of your staff and learn from the many small, casual acts of recognition, what works for each staff member and what doesn’t. Keys to Creating a R&R Program: 1. Link rewards to organizational goals. 2. Make sure everyone has a chance to be recognized. 3. Involve employees in the design and implementation. 4. Train managers. 5. Communicate and promote the program. 6. Give personalized rewards, not money (gift certificates are ok). 7. Give immediate and innovated awards. (i.e. give a key charm for every home or mortgage closed) 8. Enable peer recognition. 9. Continually re-evaluate the program. If you want your employees to take pride in their work, feel appreciated and go the extra mile, develop an employee reward and recognition program that will embody a heightened level of commitment, joy, and even passion in your employees and co-workers! As they say, if you build it they will come AND stay!

THE DEEPEST NEED IN ALL HUMAN BEINGS IS THE NEED TO BE APPRECIATED.

TECHNOLOGY IS CHANGING TRAINING

Technology and the availability of so many free learning resources via the web has changed the corporate training and development profession forever. Gone are the days when training was code SUSAN for canned courses in a classEDWARDS room setting–with the sideTHE effect of taking people away TRAINING from their normal work DEPARTMENT schedules. Today’s employee has neither the time nor patience for that. One result is that training and development professionals now spend much of their time sourcing free or very low cost learning resources such as Massive Open Online Courses, the Kahn Academy, webinars, video links, virtual roleplays, augmented reality and simulations. Although most people don’t think of it as learning, every time an employee uses a

computer, tablet or smart phone to get information to help them do their job better, learning is taking place. As technology enables lives to become more fluid, adaptive and geographically mobile, the ways people learn mirror the trend. Learning is embedded in daily life. These frequent small bursts of information gathering constantly build knowledge. The way employee learning is tracked is changing, too. New applications such Tin Can API (http://tincanapi.com) make it possible to collect data about the wide range of experiences people have online and offline, individually and collectively. The data can be analyzed to identify knowledge strengths and gaps at the organizational or individual level. Some in the training and development industry worry that these shifts ring a death knell for traditional classroom-based training. Classroom or instructor-led training is still the best option when the topic requires people to experience, digest and practice the content. Examples include coaching, team dynamics, or public speaking. Because proficiency requires understanding behavior and interacting effectively with others, these skills are best learned when people can practice together in the safe environment of an instructor-led group. It is clear that we are at the beginning of a fundamental shift in the way that both learning and working happens in organizations. Contemporary business leaders marshal various kinds of learning opportunities and find ways to acknowledge and honor employees’ learning regardless of how it is acquired.

TRAINING EMPLOYEES TO STICK AROUND, EMPLOYEE RETENTION THROUGH EDUCATION The collections industry is notorious for its high turnover. But these days employers are learning how continuing education can be a powerful tool for building employee engagement, and ultimately turning the tide on the expensive process of frequently backfilling vacated positions. Far from any perceived downside of equipping employees with certifications to showcase for other employers, ongoing training and education builds an employee’s emotional investment in the company, in turn lowering overall hiring and onboarding costs. Here’s why: ERIC LABRANT Professional Growth and Progress. Perception is everything! A feeling of personal growth and progress can cure burnout! Career-centric employees LABRANT RECEIVABLES feeling stymied can look for a path forward elsewhere, or they can be provided the advancement they crave with continuing education. Company Prestige. Some of us may be required by industry compliance or regulations to update our technical skills to maintain credentials and certification, but if that’s the only training we do, we’re doing ourselves a serious disservice. Need a plan to grow your business? WSU Vancouver stuMISTIE dents can help. JOSEPHSON W a s h i n g t o n WSU BUSINESS GROWTH MEN- State University TOR & ANALYSIS V a n c o u v e r PROGRAM College of Business students are hard at work in the community helping businesses find ways to improve and grow through the Business Growth Mentor and Analysis Program. Small businesses and nonprofit organizations can take advantage of a bright student team that brings energy, fresh perspective and cutting-edge classroom knowledge to a growth challenge. In Business Growth MAP, students are supported by faculty and seasoned business professional volunteers. Participating businesses receive about 500

hours of free consulting services from the team. Recently the Building Industry Association of Clark County went through the program. The BIA was looking ways to grow membership and nondues revenue. “The student team presented four very feasible and somewhat ‘beyond the box’ ideas to help us achieve our goals. They also provided us with follow up readings and materials to inspire transition and implementation of their recommendations. The students brought a fresh perspective to the table, which was greatly appreciated. As a result, we have hired a part-time membership assistant to help launch some of the recommendations the project team suggested,” said Avaly Scarpelli, executive director, Building

Industry Association of Clark County. The program operates as a consultancy over a 16-week semester. Student teams create a scope of work, conduct analysis, and present realistic recommendations and an action plan. The program is offered twice a year: August to December and January to April. Students tackle projects from all industries. Past projects have included everything from restaurants and services firms to manufacturing and agriculture. Business Growth MAP is contributing to economic growth in the region. So far the work of the student teams has led to seven new full-time jobs and $1.5 million in new revenues.
