hat isn’t happening in our community right now? From Port rail expansion and job growth projects to continued focused efforts to build a new I-5 bridge, the City of Vancouver’s recent decision to relocate City Hall to the former Columbian office building, and many other expansion, remodeling & development projects throughout the community, this town is hopping! One of the most exciting of these projects is the beautiful glass covered structure rising just east of downtown at Evergreen & “C” Streets. Next June this magnificent building will open its doors as the new Vancouver Community Library anchoring “Library Square,” a large mixed-use development. The library recently began holding private tours for members of the media and others to get a first-hand look at this incredible facility that will be one of the most unique libraries/public gathering spaces in the nation. For more information about that project, go to www.fvrl.org/aboutus/Main_Library_Project.htm. As Fort Vancouver Regional Library Executive Director Bruce Ziegman said at a recent tour, “We’re proud of the library for ourselves and for the City.” The new library will have several unique features including community meeting space and a public atrium, a teen space and technology lab, an early learning center/children’s museum that will be the first of its kind in the nation, a fifth floor terrace and roof garden, and other amenities all incorporated into the environmentally green building design. These are exciting times for our community. The best part, from our perspective as leaders in the arena of economic development, is that every time ground is broken, a project launched, a penny saved, an environment protected, a community empowered, our future becomes that much brighter, both as citizens and as business people.

hy not? After decades of the same song and dance, we’ve decided to bust out with something cool, hip & comfy this year for our annual Officers’ Installation event. Mark your calendar for Wed., September 14, 5:30-8:30 p.m. and please join us at the Healthman Lodge for “Black Tie and Blue Jeans.” You may recall the GVCC’s Annual Dinner & Installation of Officers, a high-flying, fancy affair. Well, this ain’t it! As we celebrate entering into the GVCC’s 120th year with a new slate of officers, we’re also celebrating this great community and the incredible quality of life we are so privileged to enjoy. In addition to great food & libations, a guest speaker and entertainment, centerpiece purchases will benefit GVCC 501c3 nonprofits. So dust off your best party jeans and get ready for a fun, relaxing evening out on the town with friends and colleagues. We’re also preparing for election season and the 2011 legislative session. There are several opportunities to learn about candidates, get informed on issues, and get involved in the process. Following are forums scheduled for July. Stay tuned to the GVCC website at www. vancouverusa.com for details about additional forums and candidate meetings, as well as GVCC efforts on issues of interest to business. July 8: 3rd District Candidate Forum -- Leadership Clark County will host a candidate forum at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 8, at Clark College’s Gaiser Hall, featuring candidates running for the open seat in the U.S. 3rd Congressional District. The event is free and open to the public. July 15: Candidate forum -- The Forum at the Library and League of Women Voters are offering a forum featuring the candidates for Clark County Prosecuting Attorney at 7 p.m. Thursday, July 15 in the community room at Clark Public Utilities, 1200 Fort Vancouver Way, Vancouver. H

ere we are in July already. People have been confused about what month it is, due to the winter-like weather that we have all been putting up with. Glad to see that maybe we have moved past that chapter and on to a more summer-like environment. Based on your input from the surveys we have sent out, the number one priority you have asked us to support on your behalf has been the replacement/construction of the Interstate 5 Bridge. This is the third year that this project has been at the top of your list. Well, there has never been a more critical time than right now to make sure that the business community comes together to support this project. Recently, I was reviewing the minutes of GVCC Board meetings from years ago and I came across this interesting bit of info; the Chamber Board directed the GVCC to contact the Director of Highways of the states of Washington and Oregon to see what action might be taken to eliminate the congestion on the Interstate Bridge. This was from the meeting held December 15, 1942! Maybe it is time for us to act! This is about bringing jobs to this area, reducing costs through improved freight mobility of the more than $26 Billion annually of goods that travel though Clark County, improving your quality of life by reducing commute times, improving the environment through a reduction in our carbon footprint, reducing the more than 300 accidents per year that occur in the crossing area, transport patients to the various partner hospitals faster and generally reduce the more than 64,000 hours of delay each year for vehicles crossing the current bridge. Frankly, the time is now for us to rally and support this project. I’ve been told by many of you that you want a bridge that accomplished the things listed above. Now it’s time to make sure that our elected officials know this as well. Many of you have written position statements supporting the new bridge and many others have signed on to general support statements. Either way, let’s get behind this and get it moving forward. If this doesn’t happen, it is because we as a supportive business community have been too complacent and we all know that is not our style. Write a letter, send an e-mail or call every legislator you know and tell them you support this project. You can get contact information on your elected officials by contacting the Columbia River Crossing Coalition at 503.552.5009 or via e-mail at info@crossingcoalition.com. The time is now. Thanks for your help!

he former Columbian building across from Esther Short Park will soon become the new Vancouver City Hall. The $18.5 million purchase will save about $1 million per year as the city will be able to consolidate its services located in a myriad of buildings, currently spread up to 10 miles apart. The decision came after public and business comment and feedback, including the support of GVCC leadership and other business community leaders. ■

Biz Tips: Tools You Can Use NOW! Write A Strategic Plan

If you don’t know where you are going, any road will get you there,” said the Cheshire Cat to Alice. While that may work in Wonderland, your business operates in the real world and having a clear idea of where you want it to go is extremely important. The SBA’s Office of Advocacy has found that only 50% of new businesses survive past five years and that the lack of planning is one of the top five reasons that businesses fail. A strategic plan, which is different from a business plan, contains your company’s vision, its reason for being in existence, and should be the base upon which all other planning rests. There are many reasons to build a strategic plan for your business, but they all end up at the same final goal: How to maximize profitability, whether you are just starting, focused on growth, or thinking ahead to retirement. There are five basic elements to a strategic plan; • Your vision • The mission statement • Critical success factors • Strategies and actions to attain objectives • A prioritized implementation schedule

By Scott Milam and Ken Imse, Milam-Imse Consulting, LLC

The best way to start your planning is to gather your circle of advisors (accountant, banker, attorney) and conduct a SWOT analysis to gain a fundamental understanding of your company’s Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. • Identify your strengths and weaknesses and plan for improvement. Once identified, most strengths are simply built upon and leveraged while weaknesses are often easily addressed. • If asked, could you clearly describe what success looks like and the steps it took or will take to get there? Define what your success looks like to you and, by clarifying your main goals and objectives, your opportunities usually present themselves by default. Clearly identify how, when and by what paths you are going to reach what you consider to be success. • Get to know your competition, especially the companies that you see as successful, and identify the reasons for their success. Identify your competitive advantages over those same companies. From these, build your own strategies

for success and establish benchmarks for which to strive. You will find you don’t often need to reinvent the wheel. Once you begin the Strategic Planning process, its value will become immediately apparent and you will likely want to see it through to completion. Then the phone rings or one of your managers walks in your office with the next fire to be put out. Don’t worry; a Strategic Plan is meant to be an evolving document. Keep at it and you will continue to reap the benefits. In case you were wondering, the other four reasons businesses fail in the first five years are (1) you start a business for the wrong reason, (2) poor management, (3) insufficient capital, and (4) location, location, location, especially if you are in retail. Revving Up the Lead Machine

M

any thanks to member Dave Blanchard of Cogenesis Marketing Concepts for presenting a June workshop as part of our “Member Request Dave Blanchard Series.” The sold-out program provided participants with take-home tools designed to help them improve their game immediately. Many business owners want to grow sales while freeing more time to spend on the parts of their business they love (or away from their business altogether!) But, although they put lots of effort toward this goal, it seems to elude them. In his workshop “ How to Build a Lead Machine” Dave reveals how to attract

better qualified prospects, then turn them into buyers and raving fans by putting in place a marketing system with eight essential parts that include: 1. A strong lead magnet that draws people predisposed to buy toward your business 2. Lead capture that gets interested prospects to tell you who they are 3. A qualification sequence that prepares serious prospects to buy and weeds out the tire kickers 4. A irresistible closing sequence that creates an emotional commitment to buy, then suggests additional purchases 5. A nurturing sequence that keeps you top of mind with those who will buy later

6. A welcome sequence that builds loyalty with new customers 7. Repeat purchase offers that sell additional products and services 8. A referral program that turns customers into advocates Dave also shows how a lead machine helps a business make more money by converting more prospects, increasing repeat business, generating more referrals and maximizing the amount each client, customer or patient spends when they buy. At the same time, a lead machine reduces costs by removing time wasters like chasing after unqualified leads, struggling with a disorganized lead tracking system, or letting leads go cold before you can follow up.

Regional Partnership Focuses on Collaboration to Grow Jobs, Build Opportunities The Southwest Washington Association of Business Leaders (SWWABL) is a coalition of regional chambers of commerce and business organizations. It was launched by GVCC President & CEO Kim Capeloto in 2009.

W Strength in numbers: At this year’s Shop Local and Women in Business Showcase events, SWWABL members joined forces, drawing more than 100 vendors and over 700 attendees from throughout the region.

hen Capeloto was hired as GVCC President & CEO of the Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, in 2008, he took a look at the business community landscape and realized there was a large leadership vacuum amongst the various chambers of commerce and business organizations throughout the region. He believed the community as a whole could be better served if the organizations worked in partnership with one another rather than as competitors and adversaries. Communication, at least, should be key, he said. Yet when he approached the subject, the explanation he received didn’t go over very well. The reason the various groups didn’t meet regularly or talk strategy was because of competition and, “because we’ve never done it that way.” Wrong answer. Ever since, leaders from each organization have been meeting on a regular basis to discuss issues, opportunities and partnerships, and seek collaborative, creative ways to boost the regional economy through strong business leadership. “SWWABL was started to ensure that issues that are relevant to the various business communities within Southwest Washington are addressed in a collaborative manner as opposed to having 10 different organizations working on the exact same critical points,” said Capeloto.

work wanted to come together with the other business associations and chambers to form a larger discussion about business in Southwest Washington. I’ve found the SWWABL partnership has given all of us a larger voice for this area, and the flow of information between chambers and associations has greatly improved.”

To date, the group has focused mainly on information sharing and partnering on events and programs. In the near future, SWWABL will roll out an exciting new informational campaign highlighting the various issues surrounding local spending habits and the rewards and/or consequences that result from decisions and behaviors. “There has not been a better time for partnerships to evolve, than in this current environment,” Capeloto said.

Vancouver Hotrod Shop V

ancouver Hotrod Shop was established in 2006 by the highly talented Lance Von Prüm, who has over thirty years experience working on and designing outstanding automobiles in the Specialty Shops of Southern California and in the Portland/Vancouver area, working with some of the industry’s most renowned builders. Located in the Fruit Valley area of Vancouver, the shop has doubled in size over the past four years. Shop foreman, Shawn Mickelson, brings a unique perspective to operations, having come from a four wheel drive background. His chassis and mechanical fabrication skills greatly expanded the shop’s capabilities. Caleb Smythe, brings a more formal set of experience from having graduated from Wyoming Technical Institute (WyoTech). Ownership of the business was transitioned to Jeff and Joyce Glaser in 2009, and retained the talented team of fabricators and builders. The business is a family affair with the couple’s sons Jonny, Jason, Jared & Joshua and daughter Tammy also helping with the business. Jeff’s background includes over three decades of automotive experience, including time with a few Southern California racing teams. Joyce is an experienced manager and
