Looking at Glimmers of Good News
I
s it all bad news or is there good news in the economy? It may depend on who you talk to. According to Scott Bailey, regional labor economist for the Washington State Employment Security Department, “Unemployment remains disturbingly high in Southwest Washington and job growth depressingly low.” But it’s also true that there are signs of growth. The Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce recently celebrated the new Vancouver Community Library scheduled to open in July. This construction project generated 250 jobs. The Port of Vancouver says it’s “on-course.” The Port’s work at the former Alcoa Aluminum plant’s Terminal 5 site generated 100 jobs building the new rail loop. That project will help attract new businesses to the Port that need convenient access to rail. There’s more on the way. The $150 million West Vancouver Freight Access Rail project is the largest capital investment in the Port’s history. It will generate 4,000 construction jobs. It will improve access and increase capacity, leading more businesses to locate at the Port and continues on page 7

Moving Forward
I
t is encouraging to see forward motion and significant progress on the Columbia River Crossing. The Governors of both Washington and Oregon recently announced their decision on the specific design for the bridge. After extensive study, they chose the least expensive and most pragmatic option. The composite deck truss bridge is our best option in keeping the project on budget and on time. This decision allows planners to complete the environmental impact statement by the end of the year. That timeline is important because it keeps the $3.6 billion project in line for federal funding. The Governors’ joint decision signals an end to the design phase and ten years of debate over what the bridge should look like. In turn, this decision marks the beginning of the engineering phase of the project. Construction could begin in 2013. Moving forward now will create 17,000 construction-related jobs during the five-year-long construction phase and, indirectly, another 11,000 thousand jobs throughout the community. It will increase our ability to move freight, and attract new commerce to our nearby ports. Because “no build” was initially one of the options under consideration, it is important to remind ourselves what would happen if we did not build this bridge. The existing 100-year-old span was built to accommodate horses and buggies. It simply cannot safely handle the loads and congestion projected over the next 20 years. Just as important is the fact that the current bridge will not survive a significant earthquake. Because of its lift span design, the existing bridge is in effect the last remaining stoplight on the Interstate 5 corridor between the Washington/ Canada and California/Mexico borders. continues on page 7

Learning New Skills
I
don’t know about you, but I am constantly faced with opportunities to learn new skills. In 1981, for example, I learned how to use a typewriter in my first professional job. Thirty years later, I am still learning. It is required learning that allows us to help our businesses and organizations be successful. As a result, I’m always on the look-out for people with knowledge and skills they might be willing to share with me. Here at the Chamber we want to help you add a few more tools to your business toolkit. We’re always looking for interesting business leaders who are experts in their field. That’s why we’ve invited Ken Fisher to join us and the Columbia River Economic Development Council (CREDC) on June 7 to talk to Chamber members about building a successful company for the 2030 business environment. The founder, chairman and CEO of the money management firm, Fisher Investments, will explain how he sees the business world changing right before our eyes, and what this change means for business. Fisher’s impressive resume uniquely qualifies him for this task. He’s been a Forbes columnist for over twenty-five years, and his public stock picks have outperformed the general stock market by an annual average of 7 percent over the past thirteen years. In March, Forbes ranked Fisher #736 on “The World’s Billionaires” list, calculating his net worth at $1.7 billion. Fisher is also a neighbor in SW Washington’s growing business community. He is building an office complex in Camas that may one day become Fisher Investment’s headquarters. The Chamber is co-hosting the June 7 luncheon at the Hilton Vancouver with our partners at

Chamber Day Recap: It Is Our Time By Elie Kassab, GVCC Board & PAC Member Prestige Development
T
uesday March 8, 2011 was GVCC’s Chamber Day in Olympia. For the 7th time, your Board Members, President and GVCC staff travelled to Olympia to talk about our priorities as business leaders and ask our representatives how they will vote on the issues that impact businesses. Our first meeting of the day was with Sen. Joe Zarelli, who talked to us about the Rainy Day Fund, tax increment financing, the Columbia River Crossing (CRC), L & I, collective bargaining with public employees, and removing bureaucratic red tape from state agencies. The Senator expressed great concern for the state’s budget deficit. Later, we had lunch with Sen. Craig Pridemore, Rep. Jim Moeller, Rep. Jim Jacks, Rep. Tim Probst, Rep. Ann Rivers, and Rep. Paul Harris. We all thanked Senator Pridemore for his hard work on the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Reform Bill, which passed both chambers of the House and Senate in February. While all of our senior legislators at the lunch indicated their support for CRC, Harris and Rivers indicated that their support for a bridge did not extend to tolls or light rail. Rivers believes that the bridge project has developed a credibility issue with the public because of the high costs incurred to date. So, while Rivers supports a bridge, her constituents do NOT want to pay tolls. The issue of higher education came up.
6
Chamber members in attendance asked, “How much more will we have to pay for tuition next year?” The legislators have been wrestling with tuition increases to help cover the budget shortfall during this session. It appears as though they don’t agree on who should decide how much to increase tuition. Should the Legislature make the decision or should they give that authority to the individual schools? Chamber members encouraged the legislators to take leadership and keep tuition increases as small as possible. They reminded the legislators how important WSU Vancouver is to our region and our business community. Our day in Olympia ended with a 45-minute meeting with Governor Gregoire and Transportation Secretary Paula Hammond. The Governor told us that she is seeing good signs of economic recovery, but that the budget deficit was actually worse than originally forecasted. She is concerned about education funding and jobless recovery. We spent considerable time talking about the CRC project. We strongly stated our support as a Chamber for the bridge given the job benefits that will result. Because of the conversation in the community about “no tolls,” it seemed important to clarify the question of funding. That is, can we build a bridge

without tolls? Can we build a bridge without light rail? More succinctly, I asked the Governor, “No tolls, no light rail... no bridge? Her response was clear: Without tolls, without light rail, there is no bridge. The Governor encouraged us to continue supporting the bridge project, and promised there will be funding to keep the project moving forward. She told us of a meeting with US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood in which he committed support to the CRC project as one of the KEY transportation projects in the nation. Gregoire concluded the meeting by asking us to tell Chamber members that, “It is our time to build the bridge.” ■

generating up to 1,000 permanent new jobs. United Grain Corp and Great Western Malting are expanding operations at the Port. Pacific Coast Shredding has expanded its steel scrap exports, hiring 25 new employees. This summer we’ll see Farwest Steel break ground on a steel fabrication plant, relocating 100 employees, with plans to hire another 128 workers. BHP Billiton, the Australian mining company plans to build a potash export facility at Terminal 5, creating 60 new jobs. One of the reasons the Chamber supports the Columbia River Crossing (CRC) is because it is currently creating jobs in our community and will create more jobs when construction begins as early as 2013. The CRC is an economic engine that will directly produce 12,000 construction jobs over the five-year construction phase, and will indirectly produce 8,000 more.
At the Chamber, we are trying to help prepare local businesses to be competitive for those jobs. You’ll see opportunities in the coming months to learn more about how companies can bid for state and federal transportation jobs. We want to help our businesses be successful. And yes, we also want you to have some hard earned fun. So I’ll remind you all to join us for the annual GVCC Golf Tournament at Lewis River Golf Course on June 16. role in addressing your questions with our legislators and in providing a credible collective voice for our members. Now that the Governors have affirmed a specific bridge design, the entire project will move forward. Your Chamber will continue to advocate for businesses impacted both directly and indirectly by the bridge and its construction. The Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce first announced our support for construction of a replacement bridge in 2008 when local elected officials took the formal vote to approve the project. Our support has not wavered. Your Chamber Board continues to believe that there should be community conversations on specifics of this project. We know there are unanswered questions regarding tolling and light rail. We feel strongly that your Chamber can play an important

ith four locations in Vancouver, 65 branches in Oregon and Washington states, and $2.5 billion in assets, West Coast Bank (WCB) uniquely blends the sophistication and expertise of larger banks with the local decision-making, market knowledge and customer service characteristic of smaller, community banks. That is because West Coast Bank is serious about their commitment to the communities they serve. WCB employees exemplify this dedication – from the tellers volunteering at local food banks to the managers providing financial support, WCB is serious about serving the many and varied needs of the local community. WCB’s Senior Vice President / Credit Services Manager, Lisa Dow and Assistant Vice President / OREO Asset Manager, Linda Reid exemplify this commitment. What is Your Client’s Communication Home Base? By Thomas Caddy, National Marketing Associates, Inc.
W
ould you like to know how to get your clients happily involved with your products or services in less time? How would you like to build strong rapport with your clients within minutes? The secret to success lies in knowing how to match the way your client thinks to what his/her “home base” of communication is. Their “home base” is classified in one of four different types: Visual people give constant eye-contact. They will sit or stand very erect, and speak extremely fast with an up note at the end of their words or sentences. They will first want pictures, colors and drawings. They dislike slow thinkers and shabby dressers. The best way to appeal to them is to engage them with constant eye-contact and very rapid speech. Use words that describe pictures or looking at something. Auditory people pay close attention to sounds and words. They speak with excellent pronunciation and melody. They sometimes look away to talk and then look back at you. Their bodies will lean forward from the waist and they expect you to carry on a conversation with them. Use words that imply listening or talking and match their body movements and gestures. Slow or monotone talkers are an instant turnoff.
10
Kinesthetic people use feelings to communicate and dislike people who talk fast. These people like to have close body contact and strong handshake. They will usually be leaning way back in a chair or be active in playing sports or building things with their hands. Talk slowly and softly with these people, and pause often. They appreciate you asking how they feel and will listen closely when you talk about how you feel. Many people make the mistake of thinking they are slow thinkers. Digital people always use a monotone voice and talk in the third person. They usually want data or information and have to “think about it.” Most people try to bring them around with emotional statements in the first person. They’re interested in the most elite things and always must be in control. The secret to communicating with these people is to speak in a monotone voice. Keep your body stiff with little motion and discuss things on purely logical terms. Talk about the superiority of the product or service and always use the third person. Prospects will have a preference for only one of the above four categories as their “home base.” Then, just like in baseball, they must touch all four bases to arrive at their decision. Every person runs through the four bases internally, in their own partic-

ular order, to make all of their decisions. For you to get them to make their decision quickly, your presentation needs to follow their four bases in that same order, beginning with their “home base.” Use only 1 or 2 sentences per base. Learning to adapt to other home bases of communications can increase your new clients by seventy-five percent. n

This is just the short list of all the games and fun you’ll find at the GVCC golf tournament. And, because everybody loves a contest, golfers vote for the best tee display, awarding the winning Tee Sponsor a free display at next year’s tournament! Other sponsorship opportunities include, but are not limited to: Beverage cart, Hole-In-One, Drinks Are On Me, Refreshment stand, Continental breakfast, Photography, Driving range, Tee bag, and Raffle prize donations!

“Eat, Drink, Read” Draws Nearly 1,000 to New Vancouver Community Library
T
he Greater Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Fort Vancouver Regional Library Foundation (FVRLF), drew 947 attendees to its fifth, semiannual “No Business After Hours” event on March 22, 2011. The fundraising event, dubbed “Eat, Drink, Read” by FVRLF, was located at the new Vancouver Community Library prior to its grand opening in July. Attendees enjoyed food and drink provided by Beaches Restaurant & Bar as they toured the five-story, 83,000-square-foot building. Of the many guests who won prizes on Tuesday, Chamber member Dr. Cynthia Bye of Journey to Wellness won the grand prize, taking home two roundtrip tickets to Hawaii from event sponsor Alaska Airlines. According to GVCC Programs & Events Director, Lori Buntin, the event was not only special because of its location, but also because of its timing. “The bookshelves were scheduled for delivery on March 23,” Buntin explained. “To explore the 83,000 square-foot premises before the books was a rare opportunity.” The event was even rarer because of the fantastic weather, enabling attendees to explore the outdoor terrace with its incredible view of the river and Mount Hood! Big Al’s of Vancouver will host the Chamber’s next “No Business After Hours” on October 25, 2011. n

The Next Wave of Networking
O
n Wednesday, April 20, seventy members of the local business community gathered at Beaches Restaurant for the first-ever Southwest Washington Leads and Needs Networking. While GVCC has provided Leads and Needs Networking for its members since 2000, collaboration with the Southwest Washington Association of Business Leaders (SWWABL) has expanded the bimonthly event’s reach. The new-andimproved Leads and Needs Networking welcomes members of all SW Washington business associations and chambers, making it one of the most dynamic and inclusive networking groups in the area. “Leads and Needs is the single easiest way to build your network,” explains GVCC Sales Director, Paul Montague. “And now that SWWABL is on board, that network just got a lot bigger.” According to Darcy Altizer, GVCC Membership Services Director, the

collaboration amongst SWWABL business associations and chambers will not only benefits members of these organizations, but will also enhance the region’s business community as a whole. “All business associations recognize the need to ban together in effort to create more energy in Southwest Washington,” Altizer explains. Summarizing the value of Leads and Needs’ expansion, GVCC Programs & events Director, Lori Buntin adds, “The bottom line is that people do business with people they know, so when it comes to networking, the more the merrier.” continues on page 23
