Chamber Updates New Chairman

KELLY LOVE GVCC CEO klove@ vancouverusa.com On behalf of the board of directors, I thank Eric Sawyer of BBSI Preferred Payroll who has served as our Board Chair this past year at the Chamber. In 2015 the Chamber brought on the Small Business Assistance Program, introduced new programming, events and formalized new strategic partnerships. Eric’s enthusiasm is matched only by his insightful leadership. We thank you for all your service this past year. On September 10, we welcome Eric Olmsted of On Line Support as Board Chair. Eric is a long time community and Chamber leader with a strong vision for the Chamber as an advocate, a connector and a resource for businesses in the digital marketplace. Look for new digital technology events in 2016. Thanks to all our Chamber leaders for their many investments of time and resources in our business community!

6

SBAP Progress In 2015 the GVCC was awarded a portion of the City of Vancouver’s Federal Community Development Block Grant to create the “Small Business Assistance Program,” we call: SBAP. This program provides eligible (mid-to-low income business owners) no-cost business counseling and technical assistance to startups and existing businesses within the City of Vancouver. The goal is to serve 30 businesses by December 2015. We are happy to report we are on our way to achieving our goal with 20 business owners that have been qualified, enrolled and received assistance in their businesses as of July 2015. Our Business Counselor, Jeannet Santiago, and GVCC’s community partners have been working with a range businesses; such as professional services, food and the beauty industry.

TERESA LAWWILL Fund Development & Community Relations Director tlawwill@ vancouverusa.com In September you will see Columbia Credit Union “Making Life Better” for local small businesses as the exclusive sponsor of the Fall 2015 [Small Business] Workshop Series! Columbia Credit Union walks-the-walk for small business in our community. In November, they are the exclusive sponsor for the “Small Business Saturday” campaign that runs from November 1st to November 28th (official national event day for small business Saturday). They have been the presenting sponsor since the programs inception! Columbia Credit Union has been a President’s Tier member since 2011. We thank them for their continued support of the GVCC - they are a great business and community partner!

Government AFFAIRS The longest recorded session in Washington State history wrapped up days before the Chamber’s “Legislative Review Luncheon” in July. The wins for the business community included: • $4 million for Vancouver waterfront development • Investment in transportation improvements on I-5, I-205 and SR 14 to improve freight mobility • A 15-20% reduction in college tuition • Increased funding for k-12 education • Preservation of sales tax exemption The sales tax exemption is a significant tool used by Vancouver retail businesses. To lose the exemption would be to lose up to 20 percent of their business that comes from Oregon. A big thank you to Senators: Annette Cleveland, Ann Rivers, and Representative Brandon Vick for their steadfast support of our business agenda. This fall our PAC will weigh in on city issues that include a proposed increase in the business surcharge tax to pay for street repairs and improvements. The Chamber will launch a new, month-long workshop series on Tuesday, September 1st! The “Fall 2015 [Small Business] Workshop Series” features two WSUVancouver professors, and industry leaders as our instructors.

SPOTLIGHT: on

Thursday, September 3rd Gordon Oliver, the Business Editor of Columbian Newspaper will instruct the “Pitching News and Story Ideas” class! He’ll speak with businesses about press releases he’s received and showcase their results. Overall, you’ll gain tips on “what to do” when contacting the media. Please join us for this informative session! Questions encouraged. RSVP online at www. vancouverusa.com -> workshops and Trainings Page. This is made possible by the sponsorship of Columbia Credit Union.

It’s all new. In August Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center became the first member to ever host a MEGA: Business After Hours Event. It was fantastic. We hosted a MEGA party on the Mezzanine with special guest: State Senator Annette Cleveland.

In October the Chamber will also kick off a new event series called: Industries Quarterly! We’ll go on-location for four events, focusing on four industries: • Oct 13th: Digital Technology • January 12th: Healthcare • April 12th: Hospitality Food/Beverage • July 12th: Finance/ Insurance Industries Quarterly events are designed to build a network within your own industry so that you can better tackle the issues that affect your business sector.

day, September 17th #7 Apps for Business 101 by Dr. Dene Grigar the Director of WSUVancouver’s Digital Technology and Culture program on Thursday, September 24th

These three workshops are aimed to help small businesses stay up-to-date with the latest technologies and learn how to easily access them. Please RSVP, space is limited to the first 32 attendees.

This series aims to ‘make life better’ for local small businesses When it comes to supporting Washington’s economic development, small businesses make a big impact. Just how much impact can a “small” business make? Experts say small businesses help drive job creation and promote economic growth, and Washington’s business market is no exception. According to the SBA, small businesses employed more than half of the state’s private workforce and created more than 35,000 jobs in 2012.

BILL FULK EVP Chief Operating Officer Columbia Credit Union

With such impressive stats, it’s clear that providing small businesses with the resources they need to grow benefits us all. The good news is there are numerous organizations that support small businesses and with the addition of programs like the Small Business Workshop Series, businesses have access to subject matter experts for information and advice on current topics and issues – helping more companies clear hurdles to their success. Several of the Workshops focus on technology, an area that holds much promise for the local economy. According to the CREDC, Vancouver is one of the fastest growing tech hubs in the country, particularly in the field of applied digital technology. Coupled with our favorable business climate, it’s no wonder that business and economic growth are headed in this direction. Like the GVCC, Columbia Credit Union helps businesses reach their next level of success. We’re working to connect businesses with the products and services they need to run smoothly and stay competitive. In addition to our business banking, merchant services and payroll direct deposit options, our Wealth Management team works with business owners to retain and attract top talent with employee benefit packages, group retirement programs, financial education seminars and more.* At Columbia Credit Union, Making Life Better is our core value. We partner with community organizations like the GVCC to support charitable causes and provide educational opportunities like the Small Business Workshop Series. Working together, we’re making life better for businesses and families throughout our community. Securities and investment advisory services are offered through Cetera Advisor Networks LLC, member FINRA/SIPC. Columbia Credit Union is not affiliated with Cetera Advisor Networks LLC. What Chamber members said about their recent ribbon cutting events...

LISA SCHAUER Board President, Children’s Center

CARROLL BERNARD Government Contractors Resource Network

LAURA HALL Hall Mediation Services

AMBER RUSH MRM Law Group

The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of Children’s Center’s new home at the Marilyn Moyer Building celebrated a major milestone in our history. It marked a culmination of the hard work and generosity of our community leaders and philanthropists who are dedicated to providing high quality mental health services to children and youth. It was our privilege amidst the July 12th celebrations to honor and thank the community builders, the believers in children, the philanthropists who made our new home possible. It was great to officially host our grand opening and ribbon cutting at the Chamber. We are excited about the education and other benefits we are providing through www.gcrn.org in partnership with PTACs, Chambers, and other non-profits across the country who focus on economic development through supporting small businesses in pursuing and winning government contracts. I would like to especially thank Melinda Cannell, Jeannet Santiago, and Matt Hoffstetter from the GVCC staff for helping to coordinate our ribbon cutting and showing their support during the ceremony and at the after party at Dirty Hands Brewing Company. If you missed out on the special offer, contact me at cbernard@gcrn.org and we will get you the information.

Our Open House and Ribbon Cutting was a fantastic opportunity for us to stop and celebrate all of our hard work over the last 2.5 years and show our gratitude for the people who helped us get here. I wouldn’t even have known most of these people if it hadn’t been for the relationships that I built in the Chamber and the support that I received. Being a new business owner is hard, it’s the people that supported me along the way that kept me from giving up! Thank you! The Vancouver Chamber of Commerce has been such an integral part of allowing our firm to get connected with people and other organizations in the community. The organization promotes and cares about all businesses in the Vancouver area, and really makes every effort to help our community succeed. MRM Law Group was established in January 2015, and the Vancouver Commerce Center’s ribbon cutting ceremony was a great way for our firm to say thank you to the community. The Commerce Center helps us to get the word out about the innovative and cost effective services we provide. Our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony was a huge success. In large part to the incredible support and planning by the GVCC. We invited friends, family, clients and the Chamber showed up in force. We are excited to be part of the fabric of downtown Vancouver and the community as a whole.
