Otherwise are back and out of hibernation with their new album "Sleeping Lions" which is the bands third full-length studio release. Known for the rock ballads to powerhouse hard rock songs all amidst passionate lyrics perfectly mixed. Add in balanced guitars, bass and drums they do not disappoint once again. To watch the band evolve has been amazing and so progressive since their self-titled release back in 2006 through to "True Love Never Dies" with the hit "Soldiers" then the next album "Peace at All Costs" with songs like "Darker Side of the Moon" and "Coming for the Throne". All albums I admit are still on my playlist. Personally, the band's music never gets overplayed for me, unlike many other bands which I take a break from.
The first track that caught my attention was "Bloodline Lullaby" which is in their signature ballad style. This song talks of love that is not easy at times yet so beautiful that you cannot live without it. Maybe that's why I love their power ballads because they are so honest. Another favorite was "Angry Heart" which is a workout playlist must! The song is a powerhouse song yet like Otherwise fashion keeps the fire in the lyrics along with the strong pure emotion. Adrian Patrick (vocals) states about the song: "The initial spark for 'Angry Heart' took place on a cross-country flight from New York to L.A. I was watching UFC on the in-flight entertainment and the fighter, Cyborg, was giving an interview in which she basically said, am a pretty nice person outside of the ring. I don't know why I fight with such an angry heart.' Upon landing on the west-coast, I told my brother about what she said and the lyrics just flowed out of me, like a molten poem of rage. For whatever reason, be it how our father raised us to fight for what we believe in, we completely related to Cyborg's statement." "Personally, I've always felt like I was waging some kind of spiritual war, but I didn't know why until my sons were born. Those two beautiful boys have utterly redefined the 'good fight' for me. Anger is a gift, if utilized properly, and we plan to somehow make the world a slightly better place by using that righteous fire for positive goals." Another favorite of mine was "Crocodile Tears" which is a very real song. We all have been there with dealing with the fake tears of a person, and to the point of we just don't care. I think Otherwise just sings about it in a polite manner. Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead is guaranteed to be looking down from rock 'n1 roll heaven grinning ear to ear in absolute joy due to the punk rock originality contained inside the riffage from this 2017 masterpiece! Each riff will grab hold of anyone who dares listens by their musical soul and drag them through mush pit paradise, until their face is bloody and bruised, but leaving new fans feeling more alive than ever! They're that beautifully crafted, indeed!
And just when naysayers were questioning if it was going to be possible for front-woman Isis Queen to top her vocal range on 2016's "Desperate", in comes the greatest punk rock anthem heard within the last fifteen years, "We Are Champions", roaring like a female Super Saiyan army backed with the force of a thousand fists, each female warrior capable of achieving god tier power to kick some punk rock justice ass and effectively end all wars worldwide. Isis Queen's vocals on this beast of a track is just awe-inspiring and could very well send chills up Joan Jett's own spine! "Where The Mountains Drink The Wine" deserves a music video. The storytelling is so damn detailed, you can close your eyes and picture everything occurring throughout the entire song. Lakewood, Colorado's Body Bag Syndikate fan base is swiftly multiplying in the dark shadows of the hardcore hip-hop genre, as if the diehard supporters were drenched in water like Gizmo and birthed thousands of Gremlins. Their impressive gritty HP Love Craft influenced stage show is what's responsible for the achievement of gaining fans by the masses. Loyal and aggressive, their fans will straight up take a bullet for the Northwest duo, that's how passionate and dedicated their supporters have become since Body Bag Syndikate's formation in 2011. "Infection" is a vigorous sophomore effort that deeply expands upon all the horror elements that made their debut "Exposure" so great, but this time the rhyme schemes featured have become more lyrically challenging for listeners. Each track is hardcore hip-hop at its finest and Donnie's brilliantly crafted harsh lyricism is bound to cut listeners musical soul wide open with their very own head phone cord wrapped around their necks, leaving them slumped over bleeding out like a Quentin Tarantino flick. Yes! The bars are that brutal, son! So be prepared before you bump this one in your whip! Mr. Menace is comfortable here with his theatrical Donald Henry Gaskins flow and dark humor raps that sound as if they were written inside a casket buried six feet deep, but this release further proves Donnie Menace had grown lyricaly as emcee and could very well destroy your own new age favorite rapper's hip-hop influences on any beat! The Las Vegas champion's wordplay will instantaneously leave your jaw hung open like someone came out the dark and sucker punched you randomly, leaving you speechless questioning yourself like, "Did he really just say that? Milwaukee Sum merfest Celebrates 50th Anniversary Article and Photos by L. Paul Mann The Summerfest in Milwaukee Wisconsin celebrated its 50th anniversary this summer. The 11-day festival has been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the worlds largest music festival. The festival features over a dozen stages large and small of entertainment along the lakefront Henry Maier Festival Park. This years festival saw attendance rise to over 830,000 people over the 11-day run. The festival, which ran from June 28th to July 9th featured headline acts from almost every musical genre including The Chili Peppers, Pink, The Cahinsmokers, Zac Brown Band, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Big Sean and Migos, Willie Nelson, and an exclusive two night headline set by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, celebrating their 40th anniversary. The festival opened June 29th to a squall that threatened to close down the event, with torrential rains, heavy winds, and potential tornado activity. But luckily, as the festival progressed the weather improved and attendance swelled. The festival runs for 11 of 12 summer days, shutting down on July 3rd so that the city can throw their July 4th fireworks spectacle. The festival reopens on July 4th, which is one of the best days to attend the festival. With many surrounding communities having their own July 4th activities, the crowds at the festival are much lighter than usual making it easier to move about and take advantage of all the festival has to offer. Summerfest is unlike any other music festival. The enormous musical offering is a secondary draw for the event, which is more of a beer drinking and food festival. With admission tickets starting at $13 or less with special offers, families arrive with children in toe to eat drink and just hang out at the 75-acre lakefront park, which is a bit like a county fair but without the carnival rides and animals. Copious amounts of teenagers hang out to catch some of the music on the more than 12 stages. The day begins at noon with mostly bad cover bands, but by the time night falls headline acts start to appear on multiple stages at the same time. All the venues are free with fair admission except the central American Family Insurance Amphitheater. EDM hit makers The Chainsmokers headlined the Amphitheater on July 4th. But plenty of other good bands also played on July 4th at the other stages. By late afternoon the Independence Day line up began to heat up. Chicago based R&B singer Jamila Woods had a primarily young crowd standing on the bleachers in front of one of the larger stages. The singer, backed by an energetic R&B band showcased her talents that have made her a favorite collaborator by Chigao Rap star Chance The Rapper. Festiva 11 @overage? orange glow, DJ Dallas K was laying down dance tracks in the largest venue outside the amphitheater, the impressive open air BMO Harris Pavilion, with a stunning lake and city skyline view. As twilight fell, a far different sound was coming from the Harley Davidson Roadhouse Stage. The indie rockers Klangstof were laying down intricate jams. The band is a Dutch/Norwegian group composed of Coen van de Wardt, Wannes Salome, Jun Christian Villanueva and Jobo Engh. The multinational collaboration has led to an interesting take on Indie jam rock. At the same time on the next stage over another Chance The Rapper collaborator from Chicago, Saba, was riling up a mainly young crowd. Judging by the enthusiasm of the audience, rap music seemed to be the most popular genre of the July 4th line up. Back at the Pavilion, Third Eye Blind was playing the headline set of the evening, celebrating their 20th anniversary. The now veteran post grunge rockers from Mississippi wowed the large crowd with their catchy hit songs. On the Harley Davidson Roadhouse stage, the Indietronica band from Sweden Mike Snow headlined a hot set of inspiring dance rock. On the other side of the sprawling festival grounds, Canadian pop singer Alessia Cara had amassed a large crowd of young fans for her set of catchy tunes. There were no real fireworks at the festival on July 4th, but there were plenty of musical ones with an incredibly diverse line up that kept most all the stages alive all night long. Blessed Coast: The Happiest Place on Earth Article By Mariko Margetson Move over Disneyland, your claim to fame as the happiest place on earth is being challenged by Blessed Coast, a three day music, yoga, and arts festival. This year the gathering took place the weekend of July 28-31 at the foothills of the Tantalus mountain range near the idyllic town of Squamish, B. More than 30 musical acts converged on the banks of the Cheakamus river to help participants connect with their surroundings, each other and ultimately themselves. If it's starting to sound like something more than a music festival, that's because it is. Blessed Coast (which rhymes with west coast) isn't even really an event, it's an experience. Conceived from backyard barbecues among friends, the once low-key get together has now evolved into a three day celebration for thousands of like minded humans. There is a lot of hugging at Blessed Coast. Real hugging, not the kind where you just lean towards someone with just your upper body while your butt sticks out and you pat each other lightly on the shoulder. I'm talking about the kind of hugging where you stand toe to toe, and use both arms to simultaneously pull the other person closer to you and share each other's energy. And you don't do it because it's an expected social courtesy, you do it because you both want to feel more connected to each other. At Blessed Coast people embrace... everything. Flowing cotton clothing, tails pinned to backsides, man buns, dudes in dresses, warrior women, brightly colored accessories, chain mail, dreadlocks, essential oils, and nakedness. Not the kind of nakedness that arises out of wardrobe malfunctions or a desire for attention, but simply from the need to change clothing, or to bathe without shame. And dancing. At Blessed Coast you will find lots and lots of dancing. During the day you can split your time between getting your groove on near the stage, shopping, eating, exploring the grounds or at a number of workshops and teachings about yoga, storytelling, indigenous cultures, herbs, sounds, and connection. At night the festival morphs into a full on rave atmosphere complete with unicorn pants, headdresses and things that glow in the dark. The stage is usually still going until the wee hours of the morning, so be sure to plan accordingly. The best way to make the most out of your experience at Blessed Coast is to just let go of whatever it was you thought you were here for, and go with the flow, following wherever your intuition leads you. Mine took me to a Cacao ceremony on Friday evening where I decided to blurt out to the first person that sat next to me that my heart chakra was blocked. I said this as if I had some kind of deep knowledge about chakras and blockages, which I totally do not. Turns out the good natured guy sitting next to me was a fellow writer currently working on a documentary whose working title is "About Love". As I followed my intuition from various workshops to the stage, to the banks of the Cheakamus River, I was lucky enough to experience several musical highlights. Ruwadzano is a musical ensemble from Salt Spring Island made up entirely of marimba, a traditional percussion instrument from Zimbabwe that resembles a xylophone. They would often fill in the time between sets with gloriously orchestrated musical numbers that were every bit as fun to watch as they were to dance to. melodic rhythm on one of the instruments to create a symphony of earthy, resonant sounds reminiscent of cool, jungle rain or rays of sunlight through a thicket of trees. I got to listen to Daniel, also from Salt Spring Island while he was looking after the stand from Salt Spring Soda Company where I enjoyed more than one refreshing glass of apple kefir. He was quietly strumming his guitar while I sat in the shade next to his cart and was fortunate enough to hear him sing a couple songs he had written. He sang a traveling song in a soft, husky voice.... what can I say, I've always had a soft spot for a guy and a guitar. The Merry Rockers inspired me to dance. More accurately, lead singer Marissa Legoleais demanded that I and the other participants dance. I would be willing to bet that everyone who has seen Marissa and her band perform, has found her enthusiasm and joy for being on stage inspirational and infectious. Inspirational because of the obstacles Marissa has had to face in life and infectious because she and the rest of her band mates are clearly having the time of their lives. The Merry Rockers are friends from university, but the gregarious blonde from NYC will encourage anyone who is feeling the rhythm to get up on stage and join her. Natalie Ramsay's captivating wail soared over the festival grounds in the middle of Saturday afternoon. Other worldly if you ask me. I was exploring the realm of story telling when I heard her, and though I wasn't able to make it to the stage to see the mysterious maven sing in person, I dare say that those who did could be telling friends they were lucky enough to see her before she was discovered. The sweet gentle reggae rock of 3. Sun lured me from a workshop I'd spent the entire day waiting for. The workshop was great, but J. Sun was what I needed in that moment and I found myself leaving the shade of a tent for the relaxing vibes emanating from the stage. He sang songs about love and nature and enjoying good times. That, more than anything else in the weekend seemed to open my heart chakra. Mapstone got people dancing. Their sound is best described as rootsy tribal folk rock and they are best experienced live. The music of Mapstone tends to take on a life of its own, emerging from a steady beat and growing into a full blown, thunderous, foot stomping production that joyfully includes a didgeridoo. I lost myself somewhere in the hypnotic tone of Christopher Mapstoness voice and judging by the vibe in front of the stage, I wasn't the only one. By the end of the set, I felt more connected to the time and place I was in than I had all weekend. And strangely, with that revelation came the realization that I needed to be somewhere other than enjoying a blissful summer day with a few thousand beautiful strangers. And so it was the end for me, I packed up and tore myself away from the sweet sound of Grammy winner Chris Berry before running into the blonde haired film-maker from Friday night. A perfect bookend to the small sampling of what can be experienced at Blessed Coast and a bittersweet way to recognize that there was so much more there to experience. I only barely scratched the surface and it was enough to say that I'm already looking forward to next year.

Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival 2017 Perfect Weather to Historic Sets Article and Photos by L. Paul Mann Day One On Thursday, June eighth the Bonnaroo music festival opened the gates to Centeroo, graced with the nicest weather forecast in the events sixteen-year history. With temperatures topping out in the 70s F. and much cooler lows in the sleeping hours it was a nearly perfect day. The weather forecast predicted slowly warming temperatures over the four-day festival, below seasonal averages and a near zero chance of rain. In past years temperatures had wreaked havoc on concert goers, even topping the century mark one year. Other years turned the venue into a rain-drenched mud bath. But it wasn't only the weather that made for a much more pleasurable experience at this year's Bonnaroo compared to past years. After some missteps last year when corporate giant Live Nation gained control of the festival, the premiere live music event in the country was in danger of becoming obsolete. Ticket sales for 2015 dropped to an all-time low of less than 46,000. It was awesome news for attendees but not so good news for the promoters of the ambitious project. But with the help of classic rock giants U2 on the bill this year along with a robust and diverse four-day lineup, attendance was closer this year to the annual average of 75,000 people. With the exponential growth in festivals across the country, it has become increasingly hard to attract music fans from around the country and the globe to a far away venue, especially one as remote as Manchester Tennessee. But, despite it's growing pains Bonnaroo continues to be the music festival that all other US festivals are measured against. While Coachella has become the largest US music gathering, selling out 125,000 tickets for two consecutive weekends, Bonnaroo continues to be the superior immersive experience, with twice as many stages, full sets for all the performers (one of Coachella's biggest failures), collaborative jam sessions, and nearly nonstop music 24/7. Since the Live Nation takeover, there have been some lamented departures for the festival lore of Bonnaroo. Gone are the legendary marathon sets like the 6-hour Disco Biscuits set and three plus hour sets by the likes of Pearl Jam, My Morning Jacket, and Widespread Panic. There are less of the individual jam sessions and jam bands that have been the hallmark of Bonnaroo in the past. There are empty slots in the schedule than previous years when it was nearly impossible to keep up with as many as 10 or 12 performances at the same time. The comedy and cinema offerings were also greatly scaled back this year, consolidating them into a single tent. Rising prices, including a new camping fee, have also raised grumblings among the Bonnaroo veterans. But the many nostalgic losses to some of the favorite aspects of the festival are outweighed by the vast improvements in the overall Bonnaroo experience. Promoters have invested heavily in the infrastructure of the festival and concert goers no longer have to line up at porta potties for hours in the hot sun. The plethora of portable toilets has been augmented by extensive genuine sanitation facilities complete with vast rows of flushing toilets and running water. The introduction of real plumbing is no small improvement in an environment where most festival goers live in tents for up to five days. In addition to a separate set of the permanent bathrooms in the campgrounds, other permanent structures have been built for live music presentations, chill sights to escape the heat and interactive projects like the new B-Hive. 22 VandalaMagazine.Com July/August 2017
The biggest change to the festival grounds, however, this year is a transformation of The Other Tent stage into a large outdoor stage complete with the latest EDM lighting and sound, including a Bass system that even Bassnectar would appreciate. The massive stage has been augmented with a new beach area called the Oasis. Bacardi offered up all sorts of rum drinks while festival goers lounged on the sandy beach or played volleyball, in full view of the new stage. Dedicated solely to EDM and Hip Hop music, The Other tent became a focal point for the younger generation of music fans.

The opening day of Bonnaroo is traditionally a showcase of new music for the most part and this year was no exception. One of the first performers to open the festival was country rocker Luke Combs, one of the few country acts to appear at this year's festival. Judging by the enormous crowd gathered at this tent for the performance there was no shortage of country music fans in the audience. Coming on the same weekend as the CMA awards in nearby Nashville it is surprizing that there wasn't more cross-pollination between the two events, with Combs being the exception.

But Indie rock was the dominant genre in the first day of the festivals. Welles, a 22-year-old Grunge rocker from the Ozarks and his blazing band, channeled the energy of Nirvana with their unique take on the genre. In a vent more along the lines of The Bleachers, Indie rockers Hippocampus riled up a large crowd as the summer sun began to set on the first day of Bonnaroo. The Turntan, Stitches, Espo, and Beans made up the quirky quartet that connected with a young audience. Just after the sun went down, the Toronto band July Talk played what may have been the most intense set of the day. With the energy of Sleigh Bells, the band is led by vocalists Leah Fray and Peter Dreimanis. The pair bounces off each other like a pair Sumo wrestlers, while singing and playing various instruments. Dreimanis' throaty lyrics are often compared to the vocals of Nic Cave. July Talk is an exciting band to watch. Hailing from Long Island New York, The Lemon Twigs brought a nostalgic 70's rock sound to the early evening crowd at Bonnaroo. Fronted by the D'Addario brothers, their over the top trip into glares rock is a welcome journey for those witnessing the show by the talented duo. Singer-guitarist Brian brings a Bowie-like persona to the stage while singer and drummer Michael eerily channels Keith Moon in both style and substance. His drumming alone is a reason to catch a live show by this band. As the evening wore on multiple stages began to simultaneously come alive with new July/August 2017 - VandalaMagazine.Com 23

music as festival fans dressed in all manner of proper festival regalia took advantage of the unlimited food and beverage stands that had been expanded to meet any demand. On the tiny New Music On Tap Lounge Brewed By Miller Lite, (yes that is the actual name of the stage), The London band Ten Fe played an astounding set channeling the best of 80Fs rock. This tiny stage has presented some legendary performances over the years at the festival, including one-midnight performance several years ago by Capital Cities. As the night wore on the music turned funky with the appearance of the nine-piece power funk group Turkuaz. The band had fans young and old dancing. But the young dance fans were just beginning in a near all night dance party with a late night set on The Other Stage, and more intimate sets in the eclectic Snake & Jakes Christmas Club Barn venue and of course, the ever-popular silent disco. As the air cooled to jacket water by the early morning hours, it was clear that many festival goers were on a 24/7 music mission this first day of Bonnaroo 2017.
Day 2 U2 Plays Historic Set A few hours before U2 played their first concert as a headline act at an American music festival, guitarist The Edge was honored by the founders of Bonnaroo at a special presentation. The Les Paul Spirit Award was given to the Irish rocker which is printed annually by the Les Paul Foundation, to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the late, Les Paul through innovation in music and technology. The award was fitting for the master music producer who also spends much of his time involved in fundraising for various charities. By the time U2 appeared at Bonnaroo at 11 p.m., a massive crowd had gathered in front of the huge What stage. The original set was supposed to be similar to the show the band has been presenting on their current 30th anniversary Joshua Tree tour. The scheduled 90-minute set was scheduled to include The Joshua Tree album in its entirety and a few encores from other albums. But at the last minute, the set was extended to two hours much to the delight of the huge crowd. With all the other ten music and performance venues at Bonnaroo shut down for the duration, most of the estimated 70,000 music fans at this year's festival made their way to the historical performance. The band began the set of with their most classic hit songs, including two of their oldest, "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "New Years Day." The band then tore into the eleven songs from Joshua Tree, celebrating the band's love affair with America. Singer Bono interacted with the crowd throughout the night savoring the moments. He congratulated America for their contributions to the fight against AIDS being serious at one moment and then joked "Thank you for naming the festival after me BONNAR00!" 26 VandalaMagazine.Com July/August 2017
The band returned for an extended encore including a powerful version of "Beautiful Day." The encore continued with "Elevation". The band then played the song "Vertigo" for the first time on the tour. Bono dedicated the song to "the great women we know, the women who insisted, resisted and persisted". The two-hour set truly was a unique and historic occasion and yet another feather in the cap for Americas most prestigious music festival. Well done Bonnaroo.
Day 3 The Festival Heats Up By the afternoon of day 3 of Bonnaroo 2017, the festival began to heat up in every way possible. The temperature warmed up to the mid-80s a more average level for summer in Tennessee, with climbing humidity. Lots of young exposed body parts bronzed in the summer sun as music fans stripped down to the bare essentials and sought relief from the afternoon sun in shady spots and air conditioned venues like the cinema comedy tent. The beer tent was doing a brisk business selling micro brews from over 30 different breweries. The large bubbling water fountain was a favorite stop for those needing a cooling respite from the heat. The venues were also heating up with live performances in at least a dozen different places across Centeroo. The young North Carolina band Rainbow Kitten Surprise had the crowd dancing in front of the Which stage by L. Paul Mann mid afternoon, to their pleasurable Indie rock sounds. But an even larger group was forming over on the main stage for New York rapper Jon Bellion. The young hip-hop star had a sweaty young crowd swaying to his set. Tegan and Sara brought their Canadian Indie pop to the Which stage next. The now veteran singing sisters have been a festival staple for decades but judging from the faces in front of the crowd have a whole new following of young female fans. The American synth pop band from Maryland, Future played the main stage next. Emotive lead singer, Samuel Herring captured the crowd's imagination with his stage antics and rich vocal skills, which could be compared to a young Tom Jones. Back on the Which stage the Seattle-based band The Head And The Heart brought their sultry Indie folk music to a large crowd painted into orange glow of the setting sun. About the same time the California girl band Warpaint was bathing This tent in their psychedelic dream pop. As twilight turned to darkness the Kentucky rockers Cage The Elephant brought one of the most exciting rock sets of the day to the Which stage. The young rockers have now become veterans after a decade on the festival circuit. Their extended residency in their early days in London left a lasting impact on their sound. Indeed the band sounds like a young Rolling Stones in their prime at times. Led by charismatic vocalist Matt Shultz, who tore around the stage like a whirling Dervish and lunged into the crowd on several occasions, the band played fierce rock rhythms. This band just keeps getting better every year and have a long future ahead. quiet for the much-anticipated performance by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. The veteran funk rockers have headlined Bonnaroo before, but for most of the young fans at the festival, it was their first experience with the band. The Peppers have always been a moody band performing amazing concerts at times and less so at others. Whether it be from too much partying or sheer exhaustion, the band has been known to play disjointed shows over the years. But for this near two-hour performance, the aging rockers were in prime form, fully synchronized and full of energy. While iconic bassist Flea pranced about the massive stage, singer Anthony Kiedis danced his across the huge stage as well, despite some sort of metal brace on his leg. Harkening back to the 80's when the band would sometimes play naked, Kiedis even went shirtless for the second half of the concert. Drummer Chad Smith played like a madman throughout the near two-hour set. Former touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer played relentless riffs as the band tore through some of their biggest hit songs. By the time the Peppers ended their extended set many young EDM fans had migrated back to the other side of Centeroo for a late night set by Australian music producer Flume. The masterful mixer has set himself apart from most EDM DJ,s by creating his music instead of just remixing others tunes. His LED cubicle podium and light show astounded the massive EDM crowd that gathered to hear his set which extends into the early morning hours. About the same time, Drs Snails and Marshmellow were performing their grandiose EDM shows over on the Other stage. Also, simultaneously the legendary Superjam was going down in This tent. (See SuperJam Review). It was a night of visual and musical overload right until the first light of the final day of Bonnaroo 2017.
Day 4 Festival 2017 Winds to a Close But by mid-afternoon, thousands of rejuvenated music fans began to come back to life and surge towards the various stages. By late afternoon a large crowd had gathered at the Which stage for Umphrey's Mcgee's second set of the festival. As hardcore jam-band fans chanted "six-hour set" the band went straight to work playing the jam music that has made the band a mainstay of festivals in the jam genre. Meanwhile over on the main stage, an even bigger crowd gathered for the pleasing pop rhythms of the German Indie rock band Milky Chance. The huge crowd pretty much remained in place for the remainder of main stage sets including ones by pop star Lorde and alternative R&B sensation The Weekend. The much anticipated Lorde set began with a technical misfire. The young New Zealand singer appeared onstage for a few minutes before halting the performance due to technical difficulties. Although announcers assured the crowd the singer would get to play her whole set the more than 30-minute delay did seem to cut into her show. But her short set nevertheless was well received by the crowd. The Weekend closing performance also felt a bit anticlimactic, especially after so many amazing performances on Friday and Saturday. The talented singer with his trademark dreadlocks played a pleasing and well-received set. But the performance coming in at barely over an hour just didn't seem to compare to the closing sets music fans have come to expect at Bonnaroo. In past years closing sets by Grateful Dead and Co., Tom Petty, Elton John, and Widespread Panic, to name a few have stretched to nearly four hours of music. While The Weekend put on a great show, he just doesn't have enough material to perform such a marathon show. There was plenty of other great music to be had across Centeroo the final evening, however, from multiple genres. Ed Helms held his annual Bluegrass jam featuring a suprise appearance by Bobby Osborne. The set began with bluegrass performances from Nashville-based The Bryan Sutton Band, Helms, Mandolin Orange and festival 30 VandalaMagazine.Com July/August 2017

favorites Greensky Bluegrass. Then Martina McBride took over to play a cover of the Beatles' "Blackbird." Next singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno played a funky bluegrass cover of Prince's "Kiss." But the biggest suprise of the jam was when the 85-year-old legend Bobby Osborne took the stage with his mandolin, performing three songs. In honor of Tennessee, the group played "Rocky Top," the Felice and Boudleaux Bryant song first made famous by Osborne and his late brother, Sonny Osborne. The set ended with a heartfelt version of "God Bless the USA"." The Which stage closed out on an entirely different not with a large, enthusiastic crowd gathering for one of the newest bad boys in Hip Hop Travis Scott. The 25-year-old Texas rapper whipped the crowd into a frenzy and for many music fans may have been the highlight of the closing day of Bonnaroo. Superjam Bonnaroo 2017 Article and Photos by L. Paul Mann One of the unique aspects of the Bonnaroo music festival is the much anticipated Superjam. The legendary jam has seen some of the most interesting mashups in modern music history over the years, some more than successful than others. Occasionally the sessions have gone on into the first rays of sunshine of the following morning.

Superjam 2017 happened to be one of the shortest jams coming in at just over 90 minutes. However, for what the set lacked in length it more than compensated for with sheer brilliant jam music. This year's jam was anchored by The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The New Orleans funk masters, who at an earlier performance at the festival had received the keys to the nearby town of Manchester from the mayor, were joined by George Porter Jr. Ask most anyone from New Orleans, and they will tell you Porter is simply the best bass player in contemporary music.
Singer and keyboardist Jon Batiste, well-known as the band leader on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, rounded out the core group. The group opened the first of 13 songs in the set with a funky "Bourbon Street" crazed dance tune C+C Music Factory staple "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)" As is customary at Superjam the night unfolded with a series of announced and surprise guest singers and musicians, playing well-known cover songs. This year's theme was funk-inspired music. Labeled "Soul Shakedown" the set included rousing covers by Jon Batiste, Nicole Atkins, Margo Price, Joseph, Sam Cohen and Jason Huber of Cherub, and female singer Boyfriend. Some highlights included, Boyfriend and her dancers wowing the crowd during Rick James' "Super Freak" with a mash-up of MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This". The performance included a sexy dance routine that saw the singer and her dance posse stripping into sleek, sensual outfits. sang a duet, on Al Green's "Love and Happiness". Portland sister trio Joseph brought a beautiful harmonic TLC's "Waterfalls" to the set. After riveting performances of TLC's "Waterfalls", Prince's "Little Red Corvette" and Rick James' "Superfreak", Gospel inspired hip hop artist Lecrae rocked the house with a funky cover of A Tribe Called Quest's "Can I Kick It?". " TUFATIL-16: 1111111WIri_ki But the biggest surprise of the night came when the unofficial Mayor of Bonnaroo Chance The Rapper showed up sending the sweaty crowd into a frenzied response. Earlier in the evening, the Chicago Hip Hop artist with an excellent singing voice had amassed one of the largest crowds of Bonnaroo 2017 for his main stage performance. For many of the several thousand young music fans crammed into This tent for the late night Jam session, this was the moment they had been waiting for. Chance has a beautiful singing voice and an affinity for jazz, paying homage to the veteran musicians on stage. He was joined by nearly the entire Superjam 2017 line up for a funky dance crazed cover of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg's "Nuthin1 but a G Than", and segued into Outkast's "Hey Ya!". The chorus line included Nicole Atkins, Boyfriend, and Flint Eastwood just to name a few of the backup singers. It was a finale most in the crowd won't soon forget.

Enter the Kingdom of the Geeks! An Inside Look at Cheyenne Wyoming Comic Con Article By Chad Thomas Car ten The Cheyenne Wyoming Comic Con was a major success! Hundreds upon hundreds of comic book/animeisci-fi fans all over the Northwest (not just Wyoming) from Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and even Montana, stormed the grounds of Frontier Park like the Storm Troopers of Star Wars invading Akviva. Nothing but smiles, positivity, and laughter all over the convention during the course of 3 days. Fans were super anxious to meet their favorite celebrities and enjoy a weekend of nerd life inside their own kingdom of the geeks. It's a little hard to explain the Cheyenne Comic Con atmospheric vibe in-depth unless you attend one, which, even with the massive crowd, is amazingly comfortable fun. But let's see what major Celebrities/Comic Book champions have to say when asked to describe a comic con atmosphere using only a specific food dish to explain what a convention is like. Doug Jones (Star Trek Discovery, Hocus Pocus, Pan's Labyrinth ): An ambrosia salad! If you know what an ambrosia salad is, it's little slices of tangerines, marshmallows, coconuts, and combined with a mayonnaisey, whip creamy, fruity sweet delight. I picked this because Comic Cons are a hodge podge of flavors and textures and so is ambrosia salad. Joshua Werner (Source Point Press): A Comic Con in general?! It may sound like a lame answer but I got to go with pizza and that is because everyone's happy, everyone's chatty, they might be on drugs, either way, they're enjoying it like a slice of pizza! They're taking it all in and it's kind of a great uniter. There's a gigantic variety of people and they're all enjoying the same stuff. Brian Pulido (Creator of Lady Death): A pizza with all the ingredients. It's an everything pizza! Pepperoni, Sausage, Green Peppers, Olives, etc. Everyone is, for the most part, companionable. Strangers spark up conversations while watching Comic Book veteran Mike Grell pull off amazing kick ass super hero art or after watching Doug Jones deliver an epic sc-fi panel; fans will be hugging each-other; busting out their favorite anime phrases together, perfectly in sync; and they all freely take pictures of each other constantly! No one was rude, but being close together was the main idea. There's probably no such thing as being too intrusive deep within Cheyenne Comic Con. Cheyenne, Comic Con is also all about embracing your nerdy insides— this quote,"let your inner geek explode" will indeed be rushing through out your head all day when appearing at this type of event. And for those attending that decided not to dress up, well you'll still enjoy the hell out of yourself! The unparalleled people attending may be watching, particularly towards the end, when people are exhausted from nerding out all day long and have taken to sitting in the margins and reviewing their purchases. But there's something astonishingly intimate about watching a bunch of masked vigilantes at rest against a wall, or a crime fighting anime couple make their way wearily through the crowds, talking quietly to each other about which live action RPG they'll prepare for next and whoever loses first will have to prepare dinner for their significant other. 38 VandalaMagazine.Conri - July/August 2017
Festiva Twoverageg Major Highlights Source Point Press had a large variety of amazing independent books and comic books on display. Quite possibly the greatest booth that displays books at any Comic Con in general, but this time Source Point Press conquered Cheyenne Comic Con with their strong fictional roster of epic talents all over the states. The professional work ethic they had to offer to attendees was down right jaw dropping! Someone passing by may have had to push up on your jaw to close your very own mouth shut like a 1930's Max Fleischer cartoon because the work ethic behind all the content published by Source Point Press was that mind blowing! Bob Salley's "Salvagers" presented a sci-fi galactic comic book delight that could without a doubt have Sci-fi author Alfred Rester coming back from the dead just to simply read Mr. Salley's "Salavagers", thanks to its genius clever story telling presented inside every single panel. Joshua Werner's "Rampant" could send chills up Stephen King's very own spine thanks to its 18th Century Swiss Confederacy setting that makes the writing found within "Rampant" capable of delivering a bonafide Gothic masterpiece. When Vandala Magazine asked Joshua Werner what his greatest accomplishment is thus far as a writer, the Source Point Press founder replied excitedly, "I founded this publishing company Source Point Press and as a writer/illustrator I started it off with some of my own work, but luckily to this day now, it has grown bigger than me! I work with people who are way better than me and now it's a much larger entity and I just get to be apart of it and do what I do best. It's the idea that something that I started has gone on and will already, even without me, continue forever. It's a great, great feeling!" Mr. Werner then followed up with what he's currently working on and happily went into detail and said, "Right now I am working on a graphic novel called, "The Creepshow in Necrogeddon" I am penciling, inking, coloring, and lettering. It's written by Trico J. Lutkins, and features the band "The Creepshow", which is a Toronto based psychobilly band. In the story, they are lost on tour overseas and accidentally end up being partially responsible for causing a gigantic monster apocalypse, where every monster rises up to try and destroy the world! And now it's up to the band to make it right, so it's them battling werewolves, zombies, and all sorts of other madness. It's absolutely hysterical. Imagine if Mel Brooks had directed Evil Dead II! The panel for Superman II featuring Margot Kidder, Jack O'Halloran, and Marc McClure was hilariously gut busting, but also slightly disturbing. Each actor dropped incredible behind the scenes information on how cheap and corrupt the Hollywood industry was and can still be today. They discussed how checks for their acting services bounced constantly, doing flight scenes with no safety nets/no safety stunt mattresses to catch their falls, and dealing with madness and chaos from directors being switched out when Superman II was fifty percent finished, so the actors had to re-do finished scenes and film new ones. Each actor delivered their voices to their fullest and had fans laughing ridiculously hard. Mike C. Randleman did an astounding job at hosting, keeping the audience entertained and even wowed the actors with his own trivia behind Superman II! Brian Pulido of Coffin Comics did an over the top professional job at wowing fans during Cheyenne Comic Con. He even presented the Cheyenne Comic Book exclusive; Lady Death #0 Nightrider edition. Full twenty pages colored and limited to 99 copies! Fans were definitely treated to a comic book orgasm extravaganza. Mr. Pulido signed any comic book written by him that fans presented for free and answered any questions attendees asked to the fullest. Super polite and extremely down to earth, it was a great pleasure for fans to interact with the creator of Lady Death in person for the first time. When Vandala Magazine asked what Brian's greatest accomplishment was as a comic book writer, he replied with a ton of excitement and exclaimed, "Wow! That's a fully loaded question to ask here on a Saturday, at 5o clock in the afternoon. *Laughs* Gosh, I don't know. Llh, I never really thought of it that way. I guess perhaps, generally the latest thing that I write is the thing that I'm most excited about. I don't really look back too much. But I can look back at my career and I say I created an entire universe of characters that have a deep meaning for people is pretty fin cool! It's an interesting question because I don't look at it that way. The latest is the greatest!" And when asked what Mr. Pulido's most challenging moment he always faces when coming up with a new story, the comic book legend answered with a big grin on his face and said, "When I come up with a new story facing a blank page, it's fairly daunting. So what I actually do is collect my ideas in writing and I work shop them in my mind so that I never have to face a blank page. Because a blank page is kinda freaky! A cool trick that I do now is that the human mind cannot be blank for long and so you just stick around for a little while and stuff starts flowing. In the beginning of any story its the formulation and if you start putting deadlines on yourself about that, you can get tripped up. So you gotta kinda allow it to formulate!" Actor Doug Jones was super blessed to be able to meet fans and had full on conversation with anyone who approached him. The Hocus Pocus legend was a hysterical riot and loved to be touchy and feely with the fans upon interacting with each and every single one of them. He is guaranteed to become your all time favorite actor that you've somehow never knew about, but have seen a lot of the movies he's featured in. When Vandala Magazine asked Doug Jones what his greatest accomplishment is as an actor, he jumped up in over abundant joy and replied, "That's tough for me to say about myself because I don't want to boast or anything. I like to think it was living through and memorizing dialogue in languages I don't speak in both "Pans Labrinth" in Spanish and the French movie I did called Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life. I had five hours make up applications in both movies and I had to also present paragraphs of dialogue in languages I don't speak. That was an accomplishment that I never thought I could pull off and I did! So I'm going to pat myself on the back for that." to ear and replied,"The next thing you can see me in is, "The Shape of Water" and it comes out in theaters December 8th. It is Guillermo del Toro Gomez latest film and I'm also in it! That's basically all I can say for now. But it's going to be gorgeous!" The final panel of the three-day event was a laugh till your head falls off trivia game show between actors Cerina Vincent, Doug Jones, Johnny Yong Bosh, and Adrian Paul. Fans were selected from the audience and were able to pick and choose which actor they wanted to team up with. The actors were asked trivia questions about the other fellow actors participating and had to guess which celebrities were lying about the answer. Then they had to do a Pictionary type game and the fans had to guess what the other actors were drawing in regards to their very own careers. What a hilarious sight to witness indeed! The audience laughed all the way through and were happy to receive prizes for answering questions that the players couldn't solve. Major props to the promoter of the Cheyenne Comic Con for setting up this type of panel! Fans will be greatly be anticipating next years celebrity game show! Overall, the staff behind Cheyenne Comic Con were super friendly and were super helpful with helping attendees with any questions they asked. The line was fairly simple to get in, food vendors were highly affordable and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves immensely. There are many different ways in which to experience the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, which celebrated its 40th Anniversary this year. If you are one of the many people who attend every year, you probably have a blanket set up in the designated seating area at the main stage. It is likely you are with a group of three or more folk music enthusiasts and you have a general idea of which of the 65 musical acts you like to see and at which of the seven stages you'll need to be at during the three-day event to take it all in. If you are under the age of ten you'll be near the main entrance having the time of your life at the nylon zoo, stilt walking, getting your face painted, or playing instruments made from recycled objects. And if you're like me and it's your first time at the festival, you will probably be walking around in awe, wondering where to start. Most people that go to this festival have been before; it's an event that appeals to people who are really into folk music and it brings together other things that folk music fans tend to appreciate such as yoga, beautiful settings, good food, spreading kindness, and music that stirs the soul. It's probably one of the main reasons that this event is still thriving in a year when two larger festivals with some big names on the bill have had to throw in the towel. The official Folk Festival started mid afternoon on Friday, when I arrived after work around 4:30 PM I was greeted by a trio of Duets on stage 1 that included the contemporary country-folk singing pair of Tomato Tomato, the lonely and often tortured prairie cowboy lamentations of Clinton St. John, and the easy, breezy twang of Katie Moore and Andrew Horton. One of them was contemplating being called evil by someone they loved as I made my way onto the grounds. A raucous dance party lead by Melisande, Ellika Solo Rafael, and Korrontzi was in full swing on Stage 3 and I busted a mellow move for a song or two before getting acquainted with the 30 or so food trucks dishing up dinner. I made it to the main stage just a little after five, lured into the open field by the haunting, gospel call of pint-sized diva Cold Specks. "I put my hands over my chest, sons and daughters so that the fire would rage" With Jericho Beach on the right and a nearly cloudless sky above, I followed the sound of her sultry chant in time with the rhythm of a kick drum. There are people in this world who experience life with a depth of understanding the rest of us cannot even fathom. I have a feeling the young woman from Etobicoke, Ontario who calls herself Cold Specks is one of those people. The rest of her set was equally as moving as she deftly moved between solo performances and band backed tunes. There is almost no reason to leave the main stage once you are there. Between sets, the audience is treated to a twenty-minute sampling of up and coming singer-song writers. There are other treats on the first night as Blick Blassy's blend of funky folk and a number of tunes sung in his native tongue remind us that you don't have to understand all the words to understand what someone is saying. After crowd pleasers John K. Sampson and the Winter Wheat and a moving performance by Rhiannon Giddens, the legendary Billy Bragg and Joe Henry took the stage to close out the day. 42 VandalaMagazine.Com July/August 2017
Day Two By clay two this unseasoned attendee started to catch on to the way things operate at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. There are seven stages in all - one main stage next to the beach and six smaller strategically stages dispersed throughout the venue. Stage 1 is closest to the main gate and the family friendly "Little Folks Village" so it features a friendly disbursement of artists that you might find yourself singing and clapping along to. Stage 2 is also close to the main entrance, but it's tucked away beneath rows of giant London plane trees, a welcome shady respite from the heat of the day. Stage 3 is small but mighty, nestled beside the wetland and within close proximity to the food court. The majority of the performances I enjoyed most were on Stage 3. Stage 4 is wide and faces the beer tent. Stage 5 was tucked away somewhere and to be honest I never did find it. Stage 6 was a world unto itself. Vancouverites that are too cheap to pay to get into Folk Fest hang out on the beach near Stage 6 and are treated to a variety of acts that usually feature world beats, dance grooves, and heavy bass. The stage itself is located in a small sink hole, so it was kind of like a mini amphitheater with no shade. Always an energetic crowd and a vibe that felt a bit more like a desert rave as opposed to a woodsy jam. During the day, stages 1 through 6 contain anywhere from 1 to 5 acts brought together by a common theme. Just another layer that adds to the reasons behind this productions 40 year history of success. Great for the artists to share ideas, music and a fan base and great for the audience to get introduced to music there is a high probability they will like. Genius, really. Here, the vibe is definitely one of inclusiveness. The organizers recognize that there are essentially two types of folk music fans: the ones that want to sit and watch a performance and those that want to dance. When the gates open each morning, attendees make a mad dash to stake out a spot in front of the main stage where space is limited and the maximum plot of real estate you can reserve is 81 X 8'. The seating area is flanked on either side by areas specifically set aside for dancing and each stage has a front row section designated for those with disabilities. the uplifting song they were singing lured me back to Stage 3. The smoky sound of Blind Pilot's Israel Nebeker coaxing us all into introspections and the meaning of life, and the meaning of now kept me there for the rest of the set which included performances by John K. Samson and Christine Fellows. Stage 2 also had a winning combination of artists later in the day that included the affable Jim Bryson, the charismatic Will Harley, the witty Lief Vollebekk and the moxie ladies from down under who call themselves the Mae Trio. Definitely a musical treat, with all artists vocally and musically adept, sharing experiences about being a musician and life on the road. Day 2 also saw what was probably the most anticipated performance of the evening for true folk fans, the set at sundown, featuring singer-songwriter Kathleen Edwards. In 2014 Edwards announced via Facebook that she no longer wanted to play music. Two years later, the critically acclaimed and now successful coffee shop owner is back on stage and more energetic than ever; affectionate and articulate with a voice that reminds you of the first rays of sun in the morning. Barenaked Ladies were the big draw for Saturday night and the nearly 30-year folky pop-rock veterans did not disappoint. With a surprise guest appearance by local resident Eric McCormack who sang the vocals for Life in a Nutshell, and some signature BNL choreographed break dancing along and a melody of pop hits, it was a crowd pleasing performance and a great way to close Day 2.

Day Three I arrived at Stage 3 early on Sunday morning just in time to hear a courageous declaration about feeling low from Afie Jurvanen, who performs under the stage name Bahamas. This morning Afie is wearing a jean jacket, comfy pants and the brightest colored socks the world has ever seen. He chats with the crowd in a distinctly Canadian drawl and a wry sense of humor; his long legs stretched out before him. Seated to his left are Jim Bryson and Kathleen Edwards respectively, and from 10 until 11 Al the trio entertains the crowd with playful exchanges and songs about rocky relationships. The affectionate banter between Kathleen Edwards and band mate Jim Bryson with Afie's signature offbeat audience requests of "shire level reverb" could have had the audience fooled into thinking they were watching friends catch up over coffee in Stittsville Ontario. By day three there are some things that are familiar. The smell of good food, the sight of children twirling nylon coated hula hoops, the sound of music wafting over a sea of blanket and tarps, and the spectacle of seagulls arguing with crows over scraps of salad. The magnetic pull of Will Varley reclining in a chair with his legs crossed and his right arm hanging loosely to the side, waiting to charm the crowd with lilting guitar, and raw, poignant ballads that are just as sure to make you chuckle as they are to break your heart. There are some surprises on Day 3, too. Like the lively performance by Scotland's best-kept secret, the traditional ensemble of five known as RURA. When a group of musicians come together with the depth of talent as this quintet and manage to bring passion and enthusiasm to the stage, it is truly a thing of magic. How they did not have a spot on the main stage is beyond me, but dancing among a devoted crowd in the late afternoon was a festival highlight for me so I'll have to just consider that as one of the many lucky and surreal things I got to experience over the weekend. Late in the afternoon, I found myself taking refuge on the beach at Jericho, just outside the fairgrounds, trying to bury my tired feet beneath the sand while Shawn Colvin's endearing and subtly told tales of love drifted above. There is just enough time to catch the final performance of Jonah Blacksmith on Stage 3 before the highly anticipated Bahamas take the main stage as the sun begins to set. The enigmatic Afie Jurvanen is in fine form, charming the crowd with stabbing tales of youth disguised in a honeyed tongue inside a set that included hit singles Stronger than That and Caught Me Thinkin. Yet the highlight of the performance was the introduction of a song yet to be released that features vocalist Felicity Williams singing the phrase "Bad boys need love too" in her signature ethereal style. For this tune we hear a seductive vibe we've not yet seen from her in the context of Bahamas that works in perfect tandem with the low, earthy growl in which Jurvanen delivers the lyrically enticing new song. Bad boys and good girls... its timeless subject if you know what I'm talkin' bout. On an evening that saw more than one big name strut their stuff in Vancouver, fans who chose to watch the Revivalists perform on the Main stage were treated to an unforgettable performance by the sultry, seven piece rock band out of New Orleans. The Revivalists are led by tall, languid, swaggering front man David Shaw whose velvet howl glides in and out of an ensemble of sexy southern grooves complete with drums, bass, pedal steel guitar, brass, keys, and lead guitarist Zack Feinburg's deft, kaleidoscope of riffs. I can say with as much certainty and honesty as one can muster that it was a performance I'm not likely to forget anytime soon. I suppose one can't expect anything less from a group of musicians whose lead singer can suffer a two-inch gash on his scalp and still finish a set, which is exactly what happened when the troupe played Okeechobee Music and Arts Festival earlier this year. I think we were all pretty lucky that night to have a band poised on the brink of stardom drop in on us for the evening. In true Vancouver Folk Music Fest fashion, the festival closed much the way it began, by honoring the roots and traditions of the event with a performance by Roy Forbes and Ferron, who have both been involved with the festival for the majority of it's 40-year tenure. The perfect reminder that none of the magic any of us were privy to this weekend would have been possible without the pioneer spirit that still shines through both of them. Psychopathic Records Take Over Oklahoma City! Live from the Gathering of the Juggalos 2017! Article By Chad Thomas Carsten Oklahoma City's "Lost Lakes Amphitheater" may have been stuck in a hundred and five degrees Fahrenheit heat meshed with an unexpected 1930's dust bowl setting while the premises became over-saturated with State Police abusing their authority. Local authorities un-shockingly managed to waste thousands of dollars worth of hard earned cash from the Sooner State's very own people, because they're government believed in a false FBI gang label that produced utterly pointless fear against the peaceful Juggalo culture. The Juggalos dealt with illegal searches within their tents and were followed constantly by undercovers when the culture as a whole were simply trying to escape their everyday stress with their friends and family by soaking up the positive atmosphere among them. But despite all the odds against the Insane Clown Posse and their beloved dedicated fans, Psychopathic Records still managed (rather professionally) to put on one hell of a successful four day weekend musical spectacle that will be discussed among music fans deep in the south and beyond for years to come! The label that runs beneath the street truthfully beamed in 17 by never giving up, remaining positive, and just kept on rolling with the musical punches across the whole entire underground event. Even the owners of Lost Lakes were impressed with all the magicalness that occurred and were proud to have the Juggalos invade Oklahoma City. Before we list our top underground performances. Here are a few honorable mentions. Green Jen: The live punk rock puppet masterpiece had the entire audience left speechless and moshing till they were nearly dead! Frontman William Manspeaker knows how to properly display musical art to the fullest and every Green Jelly track performed had fans nearly shitting themselves from the tracks handsomely chaotic bone crunching punk rock tones! Murder Musick: Playboy The Beast's very own Murder Musick delivered a passionate
set that left hip-hop heads chanting for more! It was as if Murder Musick roster was playing during an arena tour with how much energy that spewed out from each bar every emcee displayed! Legion, Ztarve, Madd Maxxx, and Emce Damage were the main heavy hitters and proved that no matter how many people are watching you, you're still required to sweep people off their feet and leave them breathless and that's exactly what those four did! The Monster Dolls: Their stage show will rigorously send chills up your spines, almost leaving you paralyzed with how much effort and talent they display when dancing in front of thousands. The dancing is perfectly in sync and it's guaranteed you'll be thinking about The Monster Dolls for years to come upon first seeing them live! Native World Inc.: Detroit's own Anybody Killa's greatest accomplishment in our opinion) was founding Native World Inc and signing one of a kind extremely talented emcee's throughout the states! The rosters live performance show-cased displayed nothing but pure fire bars that hit like an AK-47 straight to the dome! Flagrant Musick, Freddy Grimes, and Mr. Y.U.G. were arguably the main highlights and had the Juggalos screaming for more! Incredible! 56 VandalaMagazine.Com - July/August 2017
Here are Vandala Magazines Top 8 underground performances inside Gathering of the Juggalos 2017 Number 8: Kevin Gill All the 3CW Wrestlers displayed top notch skills and arguably showcased more energy than the current roster of the WWE. All the wrestlers inside the ring (located in front of the diamond stage) gave it their one-hundred percent best and had the audience unable to close their mouths throughout all the matches due to the shock of witnessing all the bad ass dangerous stunts that were near impossible to perform, but the 3CW league proved nothing is impossible when you put your mind to it! Especially in the ring! The major highlight of JCW was surprisingly not a wrestler, but none other than sports commentator Kevin Gill. Kevin's performance as a commentator host is beyond witty #flit\ and can make any event he's hosting becoming an even bigger behemoth of an event thanks to his clever, well-worded, gut busting performance. Mr. Gill's east-coast delivery found deep within his commentary is bound to leave listeners inspired and reaching inside their own mighty souls to achieve the goal of becoming a better person in today's f*cked up society. Number 7: September Mourning September Mourning's metal induced theatrical stage show upon the Red Moon Stage was undoubtedly drop dead gorgeous! The band absolutely knows how to capture the musical souls of attendee's with their unique comic book originality that instantaneously leaves concert goers breathless! The band contains a level of excitement so beautifully crafted when performing; you may even shed tears of joy throughout the melodic metal mayhem! Front Woman September stage presence is frightening, yet has a way to make listeners feel astonishingly more alive than ever before! Number 6: Cage
New York hip-hop legend conquered the Diamond Stage with his brilliant giallo slasher wordplay that could very well cause any of today's rappers to retire upon first listening to any of Cage's bars. The east-coast icon's rhyme schemes are just that sophisticated! The Juggalos watching were in awe the whole time and went complete apeshit when Cage delivered a flawless performance of his signature underground cult hit "Agent Orange". The audience started chanting "Family" after witnessing Agent Orange live for the first time. Stunning indeed! Festival Coverage2 Number 5: Pak Man (drummer) of Kissing Candice New York's underground horror metal titans Kissing Candice brought forth an intense marvelous masked stage show. But somehow the member that plausibly stood out the most when every member of Kissing Candice effectively conquered the Diamond Stage, was their super talented drummer Pak Man. Pak had this special musical aura surrounding him that could literally be felt across the entire outside amphitheater during their Lucid Fulci inspired performance. Mr. Pak's confidence level gleamed beyond his sinister Crow mask so powerfully, it just grab hold of listeners by their musical hearts, as if the confidence inside the drummer's passionate performance transferred to the fans watching and gave them a sense of purpose to be alive! Affirmatively mind melting! Number 4: STITCH (water drummer/turntables) of Mushroomhead Ohio's Mushroomhead always delivers an epic "punch to your gut till you cough up blood" stage show every time they play live! But when STITCH starts water drumming be prepared to become soaked in fluorescent water flinging about and let your metal roots soar high in the sky because STITCH's energy on stage may leave listeners battered and bruised, but they'll happily accept being completely left in a coma of amazement after witnessing STITCH nearly burn down the Diamond Stage thanks to his live metal ass kicking! Number 3: Insane Poetry Starting in 1988, Insane Poetry headlined the Red Moon Stage and had the audience gasping for more air when his originality (contained within the horror ore legends violent art) somehow stabbed through their throats from the sharpness of the emcee's grave yard raps. Insane Poetry immediately turned into this beast of a rapper on stage like a werewolf looking at the full moon for the first time and just straight up slaughtered every verse he dropped! What made Insane Poetry's creep show such a horror movie delight was the sheer fact the microphone fiend performed his new record "Snuff Reels: The Directors' Cut" entirely and left concert goers drooling for more horror long after his set was finished! Number 2: R.A. The Rugged Man East Coast underground legend R.A. The Rugged Man devoured the Red Moon Stage with his genius wordplay and had fans nearly bursting into seizures from his wild, heart thumping, and brain trauma induced stage presence. He was grinning like Uncle Fester from Adam's Family when smashing watermelons with an ax, delivered his best performance of "Uncommon Valor", and had the crowd roaring so loud, life on other 58 VandalaMagazine.Com July/August 2017
planets could possibly hear the exciting commotion! But just when R.A. was just getting warmed up to leave permanent hip-hop scars, city officials cut the power in the middle of his set due to an unknown restricted sound ordinance. R.A. was heartbroken and wanted to give Juggalos the best hip-hop performance known to mankind, but the staleness behind the powers that be wouldn't allow it. Instead of walking off the stage, the rugged emcee kept rapping with no power through a bull horn and delivered a flawless victory against city officials. Please come back to gather next year, LA.! 21st Century King of Rock 'n' Roll: A Tribute to Chester Bennington Article and Photos by Chad Thomas Carsten Chester Bennington's music will forever remain inside my musical soul. I was sitting on break at Reese and Ray's IGA when my own mother (She knew how much I loved Chester's music.) texted me about Chester's suicide and my eye's immediately flooded with tears and I started sobbing profusely and jetted to the employee bathroom so no one could see me crying. I just had a dreadful feeling it wasn't a crude online hoax. Sure enough, my instincts were sadly correct. My teenage hero was gone and it felt like the Reaper ripped my heart out and I somehow watched my own heart stop beating in front of my own eyes. I closed my eyelids shut and whispered, "Thank you for all the music you created Chester! rest in peace" and I ended up leaving my 9 to 5 early, so I could get home as quickly as possible and blast every single Linkin Park record from start to finish nearly full volume on the Sony home theater system. Dead By Sunrise's "Out of Ashes" was played on full blast soon after, followed by various Grey Daze tracks and Chester's appearance on the Queen of the Damned soundtrack with "System" on continuous repeat. My childhood and early teenage years were pretty intense growing up in Flint, Michigan, but I survived the aftermath of moving out of the city of broken glass, shattered dreams, and burnt buildings thanks to the music of Linkin Park. I was twelve in the Fall of 2000 when I first heard the "Shut Up" bridge and the chorus to One Step Closer on Flints Banana 101.5 when one of my Father's friends drove me to McKinley Middle School around 6:45 a.m. I had no clue it was Linkin Park for over a year, because the Everlast single "What's It Like" directly played right after and I arrived at school rather quickly, being it was only a five-minute drive. But the hook stayed in my head for hours upon hours that week. Something about Chester's voice resonated with me that day on my way to school and I literally instantaneously had goose bumps form across my arms with how astonished I was with Bennington's prodigious vocal range. That very same day I had to do a two mile run in the gym class I constantly was bullied in the final hour of the day. The bridge and hook for One Step Closer was still pounding in my head relentlessly for the better when the two-mile run started. I was the second kid to come back from running the entire two miles without stopping and the track somehow granted me this new breed of confidence inside me to finish the run and prove to my peers that I'm not the skinny weak push over they think I am. I felt so accomplished and I was on the hunt to figure out who the artist was behind this "Shut Up" song (that's what I called it), but no one at school knew what I was even talking about because they were obsessed with Eminem. Fast forward nearly two weeks later and I'm at a friend of the family's house in Burton ( a suburb of Flint) Michigan. I'm looking through this older teenage boy PlayStation video game case. I'm slowly flipping through the pages admiring the CD art on the discs when suddenly I stumbled upon Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory inside the case. I asked him if the CD was any good. not realizing this was the band I heard on the day of the two-mile run. The older teenager replied with "Nah, someone gave it to me because they didn't like it and I decided to keep it". The band name seemed a little bland, but the winged soldier holding the flag was "bad ass", exact words of mine. I asked if we could listen to the disc, but that's when my father decided it was time to go home and eat dinner. So I didn't even get a chance. Not long after that, some crazy shit went down with my Grandfather and someone hired a gang banger to try and kill my father but didn't succeed. We got the hell out of Flint rather hastily after that occurred and only took the bare minimum, left the house vacant, and headed towards the woods of Northern Michigan to start a new life. A year later a family who was close with my family came up to hunt for deer season. I'm flipping through their adopted son's torn up CD case and behold there was Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory and I promptly put the album in my shitty dollar store bought boombox and immediately fell in love with the album. I had a holy shit moment when "One Step Closer played", because at 62 VandalaMagazine.Conri - July/August 2017
(long) last I finally figured out that Linkin Park was the band I had heard the day of the two mile run in a Flint. I played Hybrid Theory over 01 :,PAPERCUT and over for so many countless 02' ONE STEP CLOSER 3: WITH YOU hours that whole weekend and 4: POINTS OF AUTHOR! asked my mother pick up the album 5: CRAWLING 6: RUNAWAY as a Christmas gift. Well, I was 7: BY MYSELF 8: IN THE ENO super lucky. Christmas 2001 my own 9: A PLACE FOR MY HEAD copy of Hybrid Theory was finally in 10:FORGOTTEN 11:.CUFIE FOR THE ITCH the palm of my hands and I jumped PUSHING ME AWAY up in down in joy, accidentally knocking over the Christmas tree. My Father catching it last minute. I WINW.LINKINPARK. CO NI took Hybrid Theory every where I sitor went and showed it to all my new Oa, friends, who were also stunned by 6 11 Chester's awe-inspiring vocal range. I couldn't believe that the kid in Flint attained Hybrid Theory because someone didn't like it. I thought they were clinically insane for giving away such an epic CD! 1â&#x2013; 6 1:
Fast forward to the Summer of 2004. I convinced my parents to pick my Father and I up tickets to Linkin Park's Projekt Revolution featuring Korn and Snoop Dogg. I was 16 years old and it's still one of my greatest concert experiences ever. I was the happiest 16 year old alive and all my friends were super jealous that I was finally seeing Linkin Park live. During the performance Linkin Park performed a flawless cover of Nine Inch Nail's "Wish" and my father turned to me and said, "That guy who screams has some amazing pipes! I like this shit!" I was shocked because my Father was (still is stuck in the glory days of Hair Metal and he was impressed with Chester's vocals?! Whoa!? I made sure on the first day of school that year I was wearing my Projekt Revolution 2004 tour shirt (that I still own) and showed it off proudly! It was the only time I was able to see Linkin Park live because shortly after that, the band went on hiatus for awhile and I ended up moving to Montana after Michigan's economy took a massive plunge. Linkin Park only came to Montana once in 2002 (When I was still in Michigan) and never came back, so I was shit out of luck. Tried to go to Denver a few times to see them, but my jobs at the time were dicks about giving me the time off. When I arrived in Montana at first I hated it. I started experiencing crazy anxiety trying to get used to the polarizing environment and then an incident from my childhood in Flint started haunting me again at the very end of 2008. From the middle of 1997 until early 1999 I was black mailed, hit, and bullied by an older female cousin of mine to have intercourse and ended up being molested by her countless amount of times from the age of 8 till almost 11 years old. She even went as far as breaking a dish set that belonged to a relatives of ours and threatened to blame it on me if I didn't give in. The anger and guilt were bottled inside of me for over ten years and I kept silent because I didn't want it to ruin our family. I thought it was all my fault. I kept escaping to the local Laurel Montana library to keep the memory from coming back and that's when I stumbled upon an early 2008 Kerrang article where Chester revealed his own sexual abuse. I was beyond shocked, but Chesterletting out his own personal struggle also gave me the courage to finally let out the built up horror inside of me and tell my parents what exactly occurred. I will forever be thankful to Bennington for giving me the strength to heal and allowing other victims of sexual abuse to know that's it's okay to speak out. When "One More Light" dropped in stores worldwide I respected Linkin Park's choice to explore pop music. open mind. It slowly grew on me and then I honestly ended up falling in love with the entire record and it too played on repeat continuously just like every LP record before it. Chester's vocals displayed on the track "Halfway Right" gave me the same chills and goosebumps on my arms just like "One Step Closer" did 17 years ago. It was a total mind f*ck, but further proves Chester Bennington is the 21st-century king of rock n roll. He touched the lives of millions and his music will always continue to inspire people for the greater good. The music of Grey Daze, Linkin Park, and Dead by Sunrise, and every project Chester has been featured on deserves to shine on forever!

Close Friends/Artists React and Share Personal Memories Sean Dowdell (Club Tattoo/Grey Daze) I was the best man at his wedding, played drums in Grey Daze with him for 7 years, Sd & His Friends for 2 years, we put out 2 CDs and 1 demo tape. He was Thora (my wife) and I's partner in Club Tattoo for 23 years and we opened 6 studios in Arizona and Las Vegas together. He will be missed tremendously. I can still very much remember the day I met him. He was 15 years old and a sophomore in high school in 1992. We had recently formed a band and were looking for a new SINGER to join our group. One of our band members had mentioned he knew a kid that could sound just like Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam when he sang, and could probably be a GOOD singer. The only issue was that he was 2 to 3 years younger than everyone else in the band. When he came in for his audition all of us were hoping that he might sound GOOD enough to join the band. He walked into the rehearsal space and he was not at all what I was expecting. I remember thinking to myself quite ARROGANTLY and being disappointed. I thought that he didn't look like a typical rock star at all? But then again, in hindsight: Chester was anything but typical. He was maybe gibs soaking wet and had tight curly hair and was wearing glasses. I thought to myself, "oh man, I don't think Chester with Thora and Sean this kid has what we are looking for at all". Dowdell of Club Tattoo Then he began to sing... and my heart dropped into to my stomach and my throat dried up. Every note, and every word was BEAUTIFUL. It was at that very moment that I thought to myself, wow, this kid is unbelievable. He's got "IT", and whatever "IT" was; Let me tell you...he had a ton of "IT". He was by far the most talented of any us. We asked him to join the band immediately and for the next 8 years, Chester and I were inseparable in our friendship and in our quest to conquer the music industry together. I felt FOOLISH for years that I had judged him by what I was looking at that day and not what was inside of him. I am forever thankful for that LESSON he taught me that day I met him. His mother Susan and father Lee were initially concerned about letting their son participate in the music industry; but I gave them my word that I felt like he was my little brother and felt the need to make sure I protected him. I honestly did my best to do that. He was clearly very talented with many things, but he was so much more than that. Chester was HONEST, CONSIDERATE, and BENEVOLENT; he was unyielding in his convictions in the things that he believed were right. He would consistently stand up for the underdog or the little guy.Those were the TRUE gifts he gave to the world. Yes, he had an INCREDIBLE voice and sang BREATHTAKING, AWE INSPIRING music that we will all remember forever. He also was one of the KINDEST and most GENEROUS individuals I have ever met. Ryan Shuck (Dead by Sunrise/Julien-K) When I was in the studio rehearsing some of the songs that we're gonna do (Vegas Memorial) and some of the songs that we wrote together, it did remind me of some really, really, funny shit that Chester did. And he did funny shit all the time! Being with Amir and kinda just working on the songs that we wrote together and me singing Chester's part and us remembering him in that process was really funny. It reminded me of a day that we did exactly what we're doing now. Rehearsing, writing, and re-working parts and everything. I got tired and ended up going to bed. I was just laying in bed and the studio was at my house. So that's where we recorded everything. During this time Chester lived with me. He lived with me for quite awhile. He and his wife Talinda. Honestly it was one of the most fun times I've ever had in my life. Every night was stupid stuff. *Laughs*
Ryan Shuck: We were picking on each other before this Julien-K show (he was the unofficial 5th member and played with us many many times) - he's laughing because we were making so much fun of my "passionate performance" before the show... so much fun. He was so loving and so funny. He laughs at our joke earlier while still hugging me onstage. THAT'S CB for you. We always had a total joke running between us at every performance. So anyways, I was in bed but the other guys in the band, Chester being the leader, still stayed up till three a.m. or later. The writing process had devolved into what typically happened, which is either a Call of Duty match to the death or just some other stupidity in the studio. I can hear them all laughing and yelling from my sound proof studio that's on the complete other side of my house. The bedrooms of my house are in the back and the studio is in the front of my house. Literally fifty feet away. Double sound proofed walls! This is just the perfect example of how funny and silly Chester could take his talent. Literally his ability to sing and his ability to make voices/make sounds. I could hear that somehow they started a game where Amir would play a note on the guitar and Chester would sing the note. Well that turned into in about ten minutes of Amir going higher and higher and higher up the scale, up every string! And Chester matching the note full voice until they got up/close to the highest note that you could play on guitar. Amir would play a note and I could hear this as loud as if it was in the room. Like I was just sitting outside of the room, but I was fifty feet away protect by three different sound proof walls! Amir plays a note and then they all start laughing. They sounded just like eight-year old's. Amir plays another note and Chester just screams the note right on, right in key as loud as you can imagine! And then more pure laughter. You could tell that they were falling off the couch laughing. And then another note! You could hear Chester shout "Okay! Okay! Okay! Higher! Higher! Higher!" and then Amir plays a note and then Chester would go*high pitch girly scream* "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH"and sing it full voiced as loud as you could imagine. I started laughing in bed because at first I was getting mad. I was like, "Oh my god these guys gotta stop. It's f*cking almost three thirty a.m." But it was so f*cking funny. They made it up the entire scale of the neck. The closer they got to the highest, note, the more they were devolving into total laughter. Just silliness! And you could hear Chester yelling, "No! No! No! Play it! Play it! Play it!" and you knew they could barely finger the guitar because they were laughing so much. Delirious and just being so silly. Chester ended up hitting the highest note on the guitar full voiced and full volume, louder than the guitar! Part of you is absolutely dumbfounded and amazed that he has that level of talent and the other side of you is laughing, almost tears in my eyes! I get up and walk in there and go, "What the f*ck guys?!" completely laughing out loud and every one of they faces were totally red and had tears in they eyes. They were delirious from just working for twenty hours straight. After that much work and that much focus on music. Chester could still take his talent and make it funny and fun. That's what working with Chester was like. The guy could focus so hard. He actually made us work harder than we ever worked and I know that work ethic comes from Linkin Park and the awesome culture that they created and how they do their music. He could do that with us and then we completely at some point we'd devolved into complete children. That's just what he was like. This insanely talented angel with a voice of a demon. With this like eight-year-old personality mixed inside of it. It made him so sweet and so cute. Honestly, I think that's why, I don't care who you are in the world, you even hear his voice/know anything about him/or you even just seen him on TV or in person, you love him! Sonny Sandoval (Payable on Death): We had taken Linkin Park out in 2000 when they first signed. It was actually P.O.D., Hed Project 86, and Linkin Park opened. Which was crazy! We heard LP's first single and we knew they were this up and coming group that had just signed to Warner Bros. We just knew that obviously there was a powerhouse behind them. That these guys were going to take off. We would hang out and they were very sweet guys. Always goofing around and just having fun. You could tell they were on the break of something incredible. Even when we're doing these little theaters and club tours, we knew this would be the last time Linkin Park would play these venues. We knew something was going to happen. the Meteora World Tour to return the favor. We were friends and fans of each other and they asked us to come out. At that point, they were arena status. We would always hang out afterward in each other's dressings rooms. It was cool for all of us! Story of the Year, Hoobstank, us and Linkin Park. A lot of the times we would just stand around, hang out and have fun and just look at each other like, "This is the best tour ever!" All of us had been on different tours, but it was the way everybody had gotten a long. Sometimes you get on tour no bands even talk to each other. Just business. But this didn't seem like business at all. You could go in anybody's dressing room and it would be bands and their crews mixed up together. Everybody was just one big happy family! We didn't want this tour to end! Linkin Park continued to do their thing and take over the world. They were always good live. You could tell that they loved what they were doing. Chester was always singing from the heart and it meant something to him. Their interactions with the fans were always warm and always real. It wasn't just a bunch of guys getting up there performing and just doing their thing. As far as the connection with the crowd I always had respect for them with the way they treated the audience/the fans. Definitely a positive connection. Chester was the man! He had a unique voice. He could scream at the same time and switch up to cleans right away. Which was crazy powerful! He could sing and hit the high notes just as well as he was screaming. I was blown away by Chester's death, man. I know that he struggled with certain things and stuff, but it was weird. Just like Robin Williams for example. They could make you feel loved, they could make you feel happy and make you smile. But they're battling these inner demons on the inside. You never really know how crazy it can affect somebody. I've been in the business for a long time and I've seen these guys go through this stuff. They struggle with addiction/struggle with their own identity as people. We live in this rock 'n' roll world where everybody is the yes man. You kinds have to prepare yourself for that and not be caught up in that. Me being a man of faith I don't buy into it. I don't buy into the rock 'n' roll facade. A lot of time these guys can go and be these rock-stars and might be on top of the world, but they still haven't found that inner peace. But if you would've been around Chester, you would've never guessed it. That's what's crazy about it. It's a sad thing. You can have the whole world and yet still feel alone inside. It's crazy to be surrounded by thousands and thousands of people every night, yet still feel alone. As much as I was shocked, at the same I was overwhelmingly just heart broken. And then there was the side of me that was pissed off, not at him, but just pissed off (again being a man of faith I believe in good and evil) that these evil things can taunt us and get at us. So I saw it as a victory of evil constantly picking at Chester's soul, heart, and mind. You just wished that during some of our intimate conversations, that there was something there that's real and meant something to him or to anybody that I've encountered. At the end of the day it just makes you want to have a heart and understand people that are depressed/suicidal. It makes you want to love them more. It makes you want to love people more! Mila Angelova (Vocalist/Fashion Designer): One of my first three tatty is of Chester's name. A part of my heart will always be heartbroken about Chester. The loss will always be felt throughout the world and for his family. He influenced me profoundly as a musician and I will forever be grateful for that. I listen now to his music with the heavy sense of appreciation and sadness that the world has lost such a great singer and person. The way we can honor his memory is to listen to his music and know that this will remain forever from one of the greatest vocalists of all time. Johnny Richter (Former Kottonmouth King): I remember back in the Fall of 20001 the Kottonmouth Kings took Linkin Park on their first national tour. Their album Hybrid Theory wasn't even out yet, and they were traveling in an RV just touring punk-rock DIY style. I can remember watching Chester on that tour, sitting backstage or in the green room playing around on an acoustic guitar before their set. songs on an acoustic just playing around and it was amazing to watch him play. Watching Chester and Linkin park on that tour was special because they only had a single out so they were playing songs that fans had never heard before, but every night they would kill it onstage. Shortly thereafter they went from our tour to Ozzfest and that was it, they just blew up overnight. It was just amazing to watch them develop and see how truly talented that Chester was before they were a band everyone knew and loved. Jay Gordon (Orgy): Just a couple days after his death I was on stage performing and during the second to last song "stitches" all of the sudden, everything just hit me. I realized someone who I came up with and had even been successful with, who I really cared about, was gone, and I couldn't get the words to the song out of my mouth no matter what I said or did, but I was totally coherent. I felt this overwhelming presence, almost like he was there on stage with me. I couldn't believe it cause I'm the last person to believe in stuff like that. My eyes filled up with tears, which is also the last thing I would ever expect to happen to me. No matter how bad I've ever felt about something or someone, I usually just stay the course and get through it, but it pretty much took my breath away. Then just like that it was gone. By far the most bizarre set of circumstances I've ever experienced on stage. Joey Simpson (Kissing Candice): I remember sitting in my living room after school watching MTV and seeing this band called "Linkin Park" drop a new video for a song called "One Step Closer", hearing his voice I was hooked, it wasn't like anything I've heard. Brutal screams mixed with an amazing catchy clean singing. I was hooked! I needed more. That weekend I remember going to the mall and finding Hybrid Theory. After playing that album countless times I knew I had to see them live in concert. In 2003 I got to see them live on the `Summer Sanitarium' tour and let me tell you it's something I will never ever forget. Hearing them play these songs was like listening to the album, but better! Everything was nailed right on the head! Fast forward years later, I've used Linkin Park as an inspiration for my band's music. In some way shape and form Linkin Park played a big part in me wanting to create music. July 20th 2017. I woke up and was scrolling through Facebook news feed and I see Chester Bennington found dead. Clicked the link and started reading. I didn't buy into it. Another fake news link. I clicked back and refreshed and boom it was everywhere like a plague, I didn't know what to do. I really didn't. I felt anxiety come over me. I felt sadness. I honestly felt lost. The passing of Paul Grey was very hard on me, Slipknot is my all time favorite band. But this.. this news of Chester passing hit me like a ton of bricks. It's so surreal I still can't believe it. Linkin Park songs have always been on my play lists. From burnt CD's to Apple Music. Hearing an LP song come on knowing that this voice will never sing another note makes me anxious. The world lost a hero. Lost a legend. Lost something that can never be replaced. If I had just one word to say to Chester. I'd say "Thanks". I wouldn't need to explain why. Just a simple "Thanks". He may be gone. But I know the world will never forget him.

Its hard to say what drew me to Will Varley at first. Whether it was the ease in which he captivated the main stage audience at Vancouver's Folk Music Festival while occupying but a small corner of it, his rebellious locks of hair or that the lyrics he was singing seemed to express the sentiments of every sane human about the state of the world today. I don't know... maybe it was just that he made people laugh. He rolled up to our interview with an entourage of Folk Fest volunteers, complete with camera crew all eager to let me know how lovely he is and excited to film the interview. Luckily, much like his performances, an interview with Will Varley involves quite a lot of laughing. When Will laughs it comes from somewhere deep within and at times toes the line between jovial and maniacal. Perhaps there is something in that paradox that explains what had all of us hanging on every word the singer/songwriter from Kent, England has to say. I was 13 when I started playing gigs. He says describing the start of his musical career. I went out with a fake ID and.... I didn't have a beard and that was kind of annoying because that's what folk singers are supposed to have. And all of the guys.... they're all really old men in checkered shirts and beards and I used to go out and sing. Like 3 nights a week I'd just go out with this fake ID that said I was 21 on it And I dunno if they knew... but I looked 13. I probably looked about 10 actually. But I went out and I used to play. In those early days, Will would mostly busk or play open mics around town. When I used to busk I would never do very well, he admits. The thing is I would always do my own songs. And if I stand and rock up in Kingston High Street in South London and play my own songs to people to walking past... No one cares you know? There's another guy with a guitar. It's quite hard to not be just another guy with a guitar. And so what I would do was reverse busking. I used to pay people a pound to listen to three of my songs. And I did that for years and sometimes they'd buy a CD. And so it would kind of work out, you'd just about be making a profit. 17 years later with 4 full length records, one live album, a political fiction novel, and the creation of arts collective under his belt, Will's days of reverse busking are long gone. His debut album 'Advert Soundtracks' was released in 2011, and very soon after that he embarked on the first of two notorious walking tours. The first walking tour was basically the idea that we miss so much stuff between traveling. ...We get on (the plane) somewhere and we get off somewhere else and we don't see the land between. And we don't meet the people in between. And for centuries if you wanted to go somewhere you had to experience the bit in between where you are and where you were going to. And I kind of thought it would be interesting to do a tour that was like that, basically. So we just kind of set out with a guitar and no one really knew who we were or what we were doing, weld just rock up. And we met so many people... and there's a kind of magic to that. That's kind of the original way to talk. It's how people toured for centuries. The first tour began at London Bridge and took him south east for 130 miles before arriving back in his hometown. Two years later, after the release of his second studio album, 'As the Crow Flies' he did a second walking tour, this time walking a total of 500 miles along England's South Coast. 76 VandalaMagazine.Com July/August 2017

Interaviiew Re rer e13usking, We were doing between kind of between 15 and 20 miles a day. Which isn't that extreme you know - we could have done a lot longer but with the shows on top and with the drinking on top, it felt quite like an intense physical experience. I came back and I was the strongest I've ever been Not very strong but for me, I was like aahhh I've got muscles!...He laughs, this time in a decidedly jovial fashion. I've just kind of been doing the same thing ever since but without the walking. That 'same thing ever since' has included a tour with the Proclaimers and more recently, with fellow Xtra Mile artist, Frank Turner. Still, Will admits to having aspirations outside of the music industry. I always liked the idea of farming, he confesses. Like just kind of very simply just growing stuff from the land. I know that sounds pretty pretentious, doesn't it We're so far away from what we are and from like what we consume. I think it would be really nice to reconnect with that stuff. So far away from me going to Tesco's and it's just there. You don't have any idea of the process of it I'd like to do that... for like a week and then I'd get tired and bored and I'd probably do something else. Though I've only been speaking to Will for a few minutes, it's difficult to imagine him doing anything other than share stories through music. Much like the massive artists he considers influential, which include fellow Folk Fest alum Billy Bragg, folk superstars Bob Dylan, Neil Young and the legendary Bruce Springsteen, it's not so much what he does but who he is. He captivates the audience, often lulling them into laughter with an amusing anecdote before singing a song that is sure to tug at heartstrings or have them contemplating their place in the universe. Or laughing. with Will Marley laughing is pretty much a guarantee. Whether it's a satirical commentary about popular internet topics like "Talking Cat Blues" or the fluid recollection of an evening out captured by the gem "Seize the Night", it's clear that Will is a keen, if not somewhat disillusioned observer. Take the anti-establishment anthem "We Don't Believe You" for example, in which the song crescendo's into a revelation.

... and no man has the right to tell another human being that their access is denied to any corner of this planet or any moment of their lives One might assume the lines were in response to the global political climate we currently find ourselves in, but in fact, the song was actually released back in 2015 on a live album that was recorded soon after Will signed with Xtra Mile Recordings. I never sort of set out to write political songs, Will explains. I don't start with an agenda and sort of say this is what I want to kind of... I kind of just respond to stuff I see or stuff that gets stuck in my head and worries me on a kind of a persona/ level and sometimes it comes across politically

because I'm worried about that or because I'm thinking about that or that's what's stuck in my head. I am working on some new stuff and some new songs. I played a new song this afternoon. And kind of hopefully working towards another album, doing some huge tours in November in the UK that I've been working towards for a long time. Will recently pushed his November tour of the UK back to February in favor of working on the new album, so it's clear that his 5th studio effort is taking up the lions share of his focus over the next few months. The next album may well have more than just me and a guitar on it. You know it's just been me the whole time he explains. I've never really had a band - I just rock up with my guitar and plug it in and I play. So the idea of having sound checks that go on for like forty minutes and a whole load of people to worry about is a little bit scary for me. At the same time, it's something I'm quite interested in doing at the moment. I find myself saying the words "that's awesome!" for the millionth time in 15 minutes and pressing him for who he might like to play with. They're just old friends of mine. Very old friends of mine and they're kind of a band. They're in lots of different bands. So we'll kind of just rehearse the songs up and record them I think. And whether that turns into a live thing... whether we even release them, I don't now but... the next step is to try that out. But it's mainly just... it's my buddies, so we're just going to get drunk and record some songs. It's just the same road I started when I was thirteen. I'm just happy to do it for as long as I can really. I have no intentions of stopping until people stop booking me. And as long as they keep booking me and there's still free beer be there... that's the bit that got me at thirteen and that's the bit that gets me now. Here is a Vandala exclusive with Dope D.O.D.Is extremely talented DJ, Dr. Diggles! For someone who has never listened to Dope D.O.D. before, which action flick best describes the sound of Dope D.O.D.? Dr. Diggles: Terminator 2 with a bit of Death Proof, think of a cyborg killing machine, plus a crazy homicidal stunt man and some hot girls. *Laughs* Which comic book villain best fits your personality and why? Jiggles: Rhino from Spiderman! They say I'm the henchman, the enforcer and the backbone of this operation! The origin of your stage name Dr. Diggles and what personal life moment inspired it Dr. Diggles: Well, about the name, it all started about ten to twelve years ago, I used to be a skateboard kid an listening to hip hop an rock, I was in love with the hip hop culture and every aspect of it. I was making my first beats in this shitty program called Hip-hop Ejay and doing a little graffiti every now and then. And I created this crazy character called Mr. Diggles and I would draw him all of the time. He was a sad sort of devil character, I don't really know why but hey... life wasn't always as good as it is now. Later on in life when I started to do more beats and D3-ing parties I needed a DJ name... I started as an old stool hip hop D3 and I named myself DJ Reminisce but thought the name was a bit corny so I switched to Mr. Diggles and then a fellow D3 and homie of mine said, "YO! Dr. Diggles sounds way nicer!", and that name just stuck. Can you remember the very first time a turntable caught your attention and when you knew the DJ life was your true calling? Dr. Diggles: Well that must have been one of my dad's, he always had records around the house and playing Johnny Cash and such, I started scratching on that and broke the needle almost instantly! *Laughs* After that he got me one from the thrift shop, that lasted a day or two. I broke so many turntables and needles in my days hahahahaha still do for that matter, we do crazy live shows. The first real turntable I bought was a cheap Numark direct drive turntable from my cousin: Dean High He was Dj-ing for a while was getting real good at it and sort of introduced me to real turntablism and Dj-ing. 84 VandalaMagazine.Conri -July/August 2017

How did growing up in the Netherlands shape who you are as a Di today? Dr. Diggies: Well I don't know, I can't compare it to a D3 growing up in New York or whatever, but for me, it was a lot of D3-ing at my house and enjoying my friends with practicing my cuts and scratches. In the Netherlands it was hard to dig for dope records because hip hop wasn't that big here and I live in a small city (Ghosttown), for instance, I went digging in New York a couple of times and it was just one big gold mine, spend all my money over there. Which turntablist's did you look up to for inspiration and how did they motivate you to keep pursuing your dreams no matter what obstacles lay ahead? Dr. Diggles- That's definitely Mix Master Mike when I first heard him with the Bea tie Boys on Hello Nasty it was my first real taste of Hip Hop and Turntablism. The funky and funny techniques he had and how he played with the tracks and with his crew made me like f*ck I wanna do that to! And for the last years I've been a real fan of the Gaslamp Killer, I love his style of music, live show and all-round persona, he's a boss. Three things that other D3's do that flat out annoys the shit out of you? Dr. Diggles: Well I really hate it when Dl's play pre-made mash-ups of tracks that are just too corny for words, but on the other hand how Z-trip does it live on stage its genius! Also, I don't think it's very original if a D3 just plays all the hits of that moment, you got to educate the crowd a "Lir" as well I believe, you have the control of what they vibe to, play some stuff they don't know, you won't get that instant reaction from the crowd but at the end of the night they go home with more music knowledge. And be a real D3, read the crowd, and adapt to the crowd, I hate it when a D3 got his whole set planned out and just stares at his turntables all night, get involved, show the people how to dance and shit. ENERGY!!! Using only a specific Netherlands Food Dish, what's a live Dope D.O.D. show like and why should a hip-hop fan attend? Dr. Diggles: Hut pot! it's the most Dutch food dish you can get, it's potatoes, onions, and carrots all mashed up together in one pan, and it always comes with some sausage or meatballs. Why? Because it's a mashup of all sorts of vegetables, and so is our sound, Hip Hop is the main ingredient but there are influences of Dubstep, Drum & Bass, Trap and even Rock in there. Why should the hip-hop world pay attention to the European hip-hop scene? Dr. Diggles: Because most mainstream US Hip Hop acts are straight up wack... like the mumble rap movement I ain't feeling that, I think because hip hop started in US and then came to Europe we are always a bit behind. And I don't mean that in a bad way, in a good way!! I see a lot of old school legends like Slick Rick and Redman still doing lots of big festivals over here in Europe and that makes me proud, the 15 minutes of fame lasts a lot longer here I think. Are you able to describe the adrenaline rush you felt at Dope D.O.D's first sold out show and what exactly happened? Dr. Diggles: Oh god that was amazing ... best drug in the world! The first sold out show we did was when we dropped the Evil EP. Me and skits organized the whole party and printed posters ourselves and went guerrilla marketing around the city, the poster was literally everywhere! So when we sold out that night it was the best feeling ever! There were about 350 people that night. We felt like we were on top of the world that night. The next day we had to go on tour with Limp Bizkit and rock a crowd of over 10.000 people. 10.000 rock fans who didn't want to see us at all. *Laughs* We got beer thrown at us and all that, but that only made us stronger and rock harder, Fred Durst sat down with us that night and gave us the best advice I ever had: "If they don't like you and throw middle fingers at you and test you.... get in there faces, look'em right in the eye and rock harder!"-Fred Durst Next shows we did exactly that and started winning the crowd! And the rest is history. What was it like touring North America with Insane Clown Posse and do you think Dope D.O.D. will ever do a song with the Clowns in the near future? Dr. Diggles: It was really dope, ICP and their whole crew welcomed us with open arms, and so did the .luggalo community in every state we rocked. We became instant family, and while the tour was a lot of hard work, we had a shit load of fun every night! And you might be on to something here as well; there might just be a track with ICP in the making. *Smiles* What are your true thoughts on the FBI labeling Juggalos a gang and the Juggalo March being held in Washington D.C. this September against the FBI? Dr. Diggles: My true thoughts? Ya stupid FBI f*ckers, Juggalo's a gang? Yeah, a gang

What was it like rocking it on stage with the Czech Republic group Sodomy Gomora? Any plans to do an E.P. together? Dr. DigaleF Very dope, we never met the guys in person when we did the track with *em, so when we first met them it was at a burger spot in Prague, they are really cool dudes and we both rocked the show hard that night! Dope D.O.D. and Onyx are pretty close friends now! How influential are Onyx and which Onyx track still gives you goosebumps on the back of your neck no matter how many times you listen? Dr. Diggles: Oh hell yeah, we've been working together now for years and really are like brothers. But whenever we see them live we jump right in the mush pit, whenever we bump it in the car we go wild! There would be no Dope D.O.D. without ONYX! Speaking of Onyx, Dope D.O.D. and Onyx just released the joint venture LP "Shot Gunz in Hell"! How involved were you with the project and why this record shouldn't be slept on by the hip-hop world? Dr. Diggles: The album is straight fire and if you haven't checked it out I advise you to
definitely check it out asap it's a dope mix of that raw old school vibe and that new traipse sorts sound. I wasn't very involved with making the tracks, but I was very involved with making the videos and the entire project. What probably nobody knows is that I always do the entire production of our music videos, like fixing all the props and locations. Which track from "Shot Gunz In Hell" do you looking forward to performing on stage every night? Dr. Diggles: "Piro" definitely! I love the fact how all the emcees go back and forth on
the track, it reminds me of some Beastie Boys type shit. Do you have any Dr. Diggles solo projects in the works? Dr. Diggles. Yes! I just finished building my own studio and together with Civil Unrest I started: Jungle Dynamite, we make TrapiEDM bangers to fire up the dance floor! Where working on our first EP right now and we just released some tracks on our Soundcloud. We are also producing lots of beats for Dope D.O.D. and just did a track with Virus Syndicate. Which Rock & Roll band would you like to work with in the near future? Dr. Diggles: Well I still wanna make a track with Limp Bizkit! We've been talking about it ever since we became a family on tour but somehow it never happened. *Laughs* We did do a really dope track with John Otto on drums called, "The Crows". That was insane because I used to play drums as a kid and was and still is a big fan of John's rhythm and technique. to have that style on our own track is epic to me. Also, gonna start touring with Jungle Dynamite and start as an opening up act for Dope D.O.D. to get the party started the right way! Keeping lit the torch of old school New York death metal for the better part of three decades, Suffocation has soldiered through more line-up changes than the Trump administration to bring us their eighth studio album, ...Of the Dark Light. We sat down with legendary shredder and only original member, Terrance Hobbs to run through the past, present, and future of this brutal institution. So how ya doin? Terrance: Oh, I'm hanging in there, man. Living the touring lifestyle. It's been quite a haul, I mean we got two shows left, just tonight and tomorrow at home. New York, right? Terrance? Yeah, and then that's that. We've been out since May 18th all the way to July 1st, about 43 shows in 46 days. We're going out and being road-dogs. Plus the new album's just come out, so you gotta stay busy on top of that as well, and just keep the ball rolling. Doing any festivals this year? Terrance: Well, we're gonna go and do festival season sometime this August, we'll be doing a couple of festivals. Pretty sure we're gonna do Brutal Assault over in Europe, probably Summer Breeze, maybe Party Sand. I'm not exactly sure which festivals yet until I get home and I get the final itinerary. 'Cause, y'know, management is always working on it, the booking agents are always working on filling in the dates. As I said, we try to play as much as possible, 'cause we play death metal, and it's not really death metal; it's debt metal, but I'm happy, the guys are happy, I got a really strong line-up and we're going for it, man. Speaking of which, you got a new rhythm section, right? Terrance: Pretty much, we got a whole new rhythm section, Charlie Errigo just came to light over the last two years when Guy Marchais stepped down. He was having a lot of problems, what with home, he had gotten married, he had some deaths in the family. A lot of things were going on for him so it really made it hard for him to pay attention to being in the band. He stepped down and Charlie was just a natural fit; we Also, we got a different drummer. We had Dave Culross, after Pinnacle of Bedlam, he stepped down. He was having his own share of issues, with his kid and everything. Baby's mama was just making it really difficult, y'know, real life shit. So after him we had Kevin Talley filling in for a little while, but Kevin Talley's a studio drummer. He's been out on tour with us, he's played with Dying Fetus, he's played with Daath, Misery Index, quite a few bands. He does a lot of studio work so things were pretty tough for him. We were looking around, doing some soul-searching, trying to find a different drummer, and our buddies from Despised Icon were like, "Yo, man, we think we found the guy for you!" and we did some video trials with Eric Morotti, our current drummer now, and he's played with us ever since. They all played on the record. Oh, and we also have a different vocalist with us - had gone on tour with him during Carnival of Death where he was filling in for Pyrexia. That's just live, right? Is Frank still in the studio? 94 VandalaMagazine.Com -July/August 2017
Terrance: Well, I mean, Frank comes when he can come. He's really working his way towards retirement. He loves it, he loves the crowds, he loves being able to do it when he can do it, but for the most part, he's just very caught with his job and everything. Over the course of the years, it's slowly fading for him. He'll still be out there maybe doing recording, side projects, things like that, but he's really not gonna be on the road. Any one-off festivals? Terrance: He might. It depends on how much time he gets off from his job, really. That's the most important thing because he really can't jeopardize his retirement, his home life, he's been there for a long time, he's got kids, so all that stuff just weighs on him. It's a tough decision. Now who's your live vocalist? Terrance: It's Kevin Muller. He sings for another band called The Merciless Concept,
but how we met him was through Pyrexia when we were on tour with them for Carnival of Death with Kataklysm, Pyrexia, Internal Bleeding, us, and a couple of other bands. We just became friends, and they're all from Long Island, so it made things a little bit easier, yiknow? So, has this tour been smaller venues or is Philly just getting lucky? Terrance: You're pretty much just getting lucky. On this tour, we did a tour with Morbid Angel which intersected with a lot of off-shows for them, which in turn we filled in. We did about 15 shows on our own and they did about 23 or 25 on their own, with us as main support, so altogether it was like 33 shows, and the tour with Morbid Angel actually ended in New Orleans. From there, because we live in New York, we tried to fill in the gap coming home. We did one show in Richmond, Virginia and we're doing this show here. We also have one at home, at Revolutions, which is 20 minutes away from where we live, so that'll be a big hometown show for us. Tfeel like it's hard to write a set list with this many albums? Terrance: Yeah, actually, it really is, because according to how much time that we have to play, there's so many oldies but goodies, and then there's new album material and newer stuff that it's really hard for us to pick and choose which songs we're gonna pull in and out of the set. When we were on tour with Morbid Angel, we only had a 45-minute set, so that's just maybe 8 or 9 songs and we have all these oldies: Pierced from Within, Effigy of the Forgotten, this one, that one, and the other one. For us to take out - especially considering we have a new album out - ...Of The Dark Light, I hope you guys get it, check it out, it's completely ballistic - for us to pull out one song like "Infecting the Cribs" kind of hurts our, yiknow, we don't wanna hurt our fans. Things like that. So death metal's gotten pretty weird in the last decade. Any newer bands you've been digging? Terrance: There are quite a few bands that I like. Out of the blue, let's say Decrepit Birth, After The Burial, Aeon, Profanity (from Germany) [is a] really great, technical band, Truth Corroded from Australia's pretty good. Check out Josh Barron's new band from Australia, a southern-rock band called Mammoth. There's quite a few bands that I've really been getting into lately, as well as the old school. Angel fans get ready. They're doing a great job, so keep a look out for those guys. There's a new album coming out from Masticator out of Florida. Check that out as well...â&#x2013; Desecrate The Faith from Texas, check them out. There's a bunch of bands What do you think of the new B.C. Rich guitars, the Praxis ones? Terrance: The Praxis B.C. Richs I am very not fond of. I like the old school B.C. Richs much more. I think ownership has changed quite a few too many times where qualities haven't become the same. Of course, I will always love B.C. Rich shapes and I always love what they've done for me, but at this point I think B.C. Rich could use a little bit of an overhaul and go back to the old-school roots, maybe get Scott Pivarnich to be one of your builders, that would be the best thing to tell you to do. He's an awesome man. He's built me some guitars that are beautiful. Out of North Carolina, independent builder, and he's building weird shapes. He's working with a lot of people from off the B.C. Rich Junkie site and I think that if B.C. Rich knew what was good for 'em, they would solicit him. Being so many albums deep, do you now go into them with a different mindset and how do you hope to keep progressing? Terrance: I always look back on it as - well, I never thought that the band would come this far anyway, so if something isn't broken, don't fix it. We try to stay to the roots and the formulas that we've always used. Of course, we always wanna incorporate newer styles and newer things, different guitar-solo techniques and stuff, but that just comes with the territory in trying to be original. The main thing is we wanna keep our integrity, make sure you guys know what you're getting when you buy a Suffo record. Keep it brutal. Does your live vocalist do the thing with his hand? Terrance: No. He doesn't do the thing with his hands. I think that is a Frank Mullen staple, bar none.

A Warped Tour Extravaganza Interview with Isis Queen By Chad Thomas Carsten
Barb Wire Dolls are just finishing up slaying stages across the nation on this year's Warped Tour! Their new record "Rub My Mind" dropped this summer through Motorhead Music and is keeping the true spirit of rock & roll alive. As well as proving that punk rock is still alive and capable of drop kicking listeners in their face with its attitude. Isis Queen is one hell of a vocalist and she rivals any vocalist alive today. Isis, how did growing up in Greece influence who you are as a vocalist today? Isis Queen: I was a very angry teenager as most are!) and I always felt incomplete with the music that was force fed on me through radio and TV. When you're young, you confide in music to give you meaning and answers to your pain. I was always into rock 'n' roll, even though I grew up in the early 2000's when hip hop, rap, and made-up boy/girl groups reigned. So I turned to older bands and rock groups from the 70's and 80's to give me the power and authenticity I was looking for. Growing up in Greece, metal was God, so naturally, I rebelled against it and never got into it. So when I discovered Punk Rock, I knew I found my voice. Did you have other stage names in mind before choosing Isis Queen? Why Isis Queen? Isis Queen Isis is my first name. The beauty about getting into art is that you are free to reinvent yourself. So I gave myself a new last name that pulled me away from my persona that people knew me as before the band. I now could be someone that I saw myself as, not who my family and friends knew me as beforehand. Isis Queen seemed like a twist on Ice Queen. And the Ice Queen was the main character in one of my favorite fairytales growing up. Define punk in your own words on how exactly is Barb Wire Dolls keeping Punk Rock genre alive? Isis Queen: We are influenced by the first wave of punk from the 70's when the genre was about being different from your predecessors. Bands like the Ramones, Sex Pistols, Blonde, The Clash, X-ray Specs, and The Germs were completely different from each other but were considered punk. The attitude and rebelliousness made them punk, by doing something different and unapologetic. Most bands that are considered "punk" nowadays all sound the same. They have the same polka drum beats, wear the same clothes and sing about the same relationship issues over and over. That is why we don't really consider ourselves punk. Lemmy said it perfectly, "we play rock n' roll". There needs to be something different to wake up the next generation. Most influential Motorhead album and â&#x2013;şhy? Isis Queen: Bad Magic. It was the last studio Motorhead album to be released and "Victory or Die" (the first song on the album) is a true statement that after decades of being in the music industry, Motorhead have the same power and realness they did when they started out more than 40 years ago. Most cherished memory when first meeting Lemmy Kilmister? Isis Queen First of all, Lemmy is God. If you ever had a chance to meet him, you knew the pure power that he embodied/embodies. first night we arrived in Los Angeles. After being invited to play LA by legendary radio DJ Rodney Bingenheimer, we went to check out The Whisky A Go Go on the Sunset Strip. We bumped into Lemmy and talked about 70's punk rock and the Greek scene and when he hugged me, the sheer strength in his arms made my knees buckle. When first offered the chance to perform at Warped Tour, what were the first thoughts that rushed through your mind? Isis Queen: "Finally, we can play to the youth!" How is the Warped Tour experience, thus far? Isis Queen Amazing. It has been a life changer. We have had our ups and downs but it has all been worth it. The down part was our bus breaking down before even getting to the first show and we have lost so much sleep, money and the stress levels have skyrocketed. But the ups are the fans and youngsters that smile, scream and cry with happiness in the crowd. A young girl told us that after discovering our music, she found a reason to live and has pushed away any suicidal thoughts from her mind. The fans make it totally worthwhile. 1

What personal life moment precisely inspired the title for "Rub My Mind" and what does the album title represent? Isis Queen: It's time to wake up. Yes, we use our minds daily but what around us really affects it to the point of being inspired to create something bigger and better than your already existence? Rub YOUR mind. Look beyond the obvious and recreate your fate. What kind of content can fans expect from your LP "Rub My Mind"? p sis Queen: We met Eagles of
Death Metal when we both played Riot Fest in Chicago and we invited them to record at the artist commune on the island of Crete (Greece) where we come from. Soon after, David Catching of EODM invited us to record at his legendary studio in Joshua Tree, California called Rancho De La Luna. We were honored because his studio is where the desert rock movement began with Kyuss, then Queens Of The Stone Age who all recorded their albums there. As we were set to record there, the horrific Bataclan attack happened at their show in France. David told us to still come and record our album for them because the music has to keep going. We ended up writing many new songs that reflected how we felt at that time just as we entered his studio. Then on the last day, we recorded the album in only two quick days, Iggy Pop and Josh Homme showed up to record "Post Pop Depression". It was a surreal 102 VandalaMagazine.Com -July/August 2017
experience. We captured the vibe of the desert and the melancholy of the world in this album. Which track featured on the album was the most challenging to record vocally and why? Isis Queen; The last song on the album is called "Waiting To Be Lost". It is a six-minute song that was totally free flow. The band jammed it without vocals or structure and then I came in and sung whatever came to mind without knowing how long the song was and where it was changing. I got it down in one try! It was the hardest because it was either make it or break it. If it turned out bad then we would have scrapped it so thankfully I nailed it. It's a beautiful song and I am proud of it. Are you able to break down the track "Where Mountains Drink the Wine" from its production to the true meaning behind the lyrics? Isis Queen: The song is about a girl that goes to a big city, like Los Angeles to find herself but ends up getting lost in trying to impress the wrong people and falls into drugs and prostitution in order to give her life meaning. "Oh how she died to live forever." We know people that fall into that game and it's a song for people to find guidance. Which track from "Rub My Mind "was the most emotional to record and why? Isis Queen; "Desert Song". It has a lot of meaning to me personally. Being in the desert while recording it, especially because of the circumstances, the song has a well of energy that I'm grateful to be a part of. It was also the first track we played EODM after it was finished. They sat and listened in total silence which shows the kind of people they are and the respect they have for music and living life with others. Isis, any advice for young female musicians who look up to you for inspiration on what not to do on the road when touring? Isis Queen: Go with the flow and keep your ego in check. What do you want to accomplish with Barb Wire Dolls in the next ten years? Isis Queen: More songs and albums that we are proud of. To play to bigger audiences and to get our music out there to more people around the world. SgE From Boston to Berkley: Dropkick Murphys and Rancid in Vancouver Article By Dustin Griffin It doesn't matter what genre of music you're into. You've heard of the Dropkick Murphys. And if you've heard of the Dropkick Murphys, you are, to some degree, a fan. And how could you not be? Here we have a group of six individuals who together typify the working class, all American band. They play hard, they play passionately, and they don't take shit from anyone. And those characteristics have endeared them to millions of fans all over the world. When you listen to the Murphys, you feel like a working class Irish mug from south Boston too, wherever you're from. I've seen the Dropkick's at least ten times in different venues at various points throughout the years, and despite the occasional lineup changes that accompany most any band that sticks around for two plus decades, this band is as reliable a live entity as you're likely to find in rock music in this day and age. One of my most memorable live experiences with the band was their co-headlining Canadian tour with Bad Religion back in 2006. For that particular run of dates, the Murphys played first. The idea being that Bad Religion was the bigger draw and therefore closed the show every night. On this tour, and indeed on most, the Murphys are the main draw. This tour is called From Boston to Berkley and features Murphy cohorts Rancid. And for anyone who had ever been to Warped Tour on a year both these bands were on the bill (back when the Warped Tour was still a punk festival, in the classic sense), knows that they play well together. I haven't seen Rancid as many times as I've seen the Kicks, but I've been able to catch them a good half dozen times throughout the years. As with the Murphys, Rancid are always dependably solid. So solid in fact, that despite the fact that at least three of band members are pushing SO, they play with as much energy and as much passion and excitement for the music, as they did the first time I saw them way back in 2002. I had some real issues with both Rancid and the Murphy's new albums. While Rancid sounds more energized on Trouble Maker than they have since Indestructible, there is a distinct feeling of audio deja vu going on here. Rancid are following a blueprint, tried and true, and that leaves the listener with as much warm nostalgia as it does a feeling of retro mediocrity. It would be nice to hear the band switch it up a little and try something new, the way they did back in the late 90's/early 00's. The Murphy's new album suffers from even more of that double audio-vision mediocrity on the wonderfully titled 11 Short Stories of Pain and Glory. I swear half the songs on this album are rehashes of stuff they've done before, a few times in some cases. Luckily, Rancid's set was as much about the classics as it was about the new tunes, and they ended up playing a good half of Out Come The Wolves, much to the crowd's delight, at The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre on the UBC campus in Vancouver. They touched on every album in their catalog, save their debut. And although their set didn't include the kinetic lighting and background video screen that the Murphy's did, Rancid had no trouble rocking the house and keeping the crowd well engaged 106 VandalaMagazine.Com July/August 2017
throughout. But ultimately, this was the Murphy's house. Like Rancid, the Murphys played with the same energy, passion, and excitement they've played with for 20 some odd years, ending the show, as they always do, with their anthem anti-racist Skinhead on the MBTA (never more timely), featuring none other than Rancid on stage backing them up. And while the crowd favorite moment was undoubtedly Shipping Up To Boston, the one word that could describe the whole evening was simple: satisfaction. We came to rock and be rocked, and these two legendary punk bands obliged.

Slayer, Lamb of God & Behemoth Leads a Musical Assault Article and Photos by L. Paul Mann Heavy Metal madness descended on Paso Robles Tuesday night, August 8th, with a triple header of hard core music at the Vina Robles Amphitheater. As thousands of black shirted metal fans flocked to the magnificent outdoor venue, the music began early with a sunset appearance by the Polish hardcore metal band Behemoth. The Polish band has been an important mainstay in the hardcore metal scene in Europe since they were founded in 1991. The veteran rockers have ten albums under their belt and have gone from being a traditional black metal band to one of the most hardcore occult metal bands in the world. Controversial lead singer-guitarist and actor who goes by the moniker Nergal has had run-ins with authorities in his homeland for being "anti-religious". The band arrived with all the accouterments of black metal including, thick makeup black leather outfits and even ceremonial incense burners. But the theatrical nature of the group did not make their raw talent as one of the best metal bands in Europe. The group was only allowed a short 30 minutes for their opening set, but music fans who arrived early savored every moment of it. Fans in the general admission pit wasted no time getting into a headbanging and mosh pit rhythm, and the band left the crowd screaming for more after their short set. As twilight fell on the Vina Robles Amphitheater, the warm summer air blew across the packed venue and fans swarmed the stage for the second act, Lamb of God. The veteran rock band from Virginia formed in 1994 has helped forge a new wave of heavy metal in the United States. The Grammy nominated band has released eight albums that have sold over two million copies collectively. The band's vocalist Randy Blythe has also been a controversial figure in the past. In 2012 he was arrested by Czech police after pushing a fan off the stage during a concert. The fan hit his head and later died from his injuries. The singer was found civilly but not criminally liable for the fans death. The incident has stopped the animated vocalist from performing though, and Blythe jumped about the stage like a teenage gymnast, constantly launching off any fixed obstacle on the stage. The band played with intense ferocity and fans loved it even singing the chorus on several songs. By the time the legendary band Slayer took the stage, the crowd was ready to break into a crazed dance frenzy. Slayer has been one of the most influential bands in Heavy Metal music since their debut in 1981. The California veterans are one of the big four Thrash Metal bands, including Anthrax, Megadeath, and Metallica. Despite controversial lyrics and constant run ins with censors of all kinds, the group has managed to accrue five Grammy awards over the year. The band is fronted by two of the four original members including Bassist and lead vocalist Tom Araya and iconic guitarist Kerry King. Drummer Paul Bostaph has played with the band on and off since 1992. The newest member of the band, guitarist Gary Holt took over for original guitarist Jeff Hanneman, who died in 2013. Slayer launched into a 19 song set of powerful Trash metal songs culled from the groups eight studio albums. The general admission floor of the venue turned into a giant mosh pit as the thunderous sound system inundated the amphitheater with the thunderous rhythms of heavy metal. Occasionally the group would leave Araya on the stage by himself to banter with the crowd and tell anecdotes of the bands history. The group played straight through until near curfew time without pausing for an encore, ending with one of their biggest hits Angel of Death. It was an impressive presentation of hard core metal music, rarely seen in the Tricounty area of California. www.slayer.net

I wasn't expecting a concert with legendary Sixto Rodriguez to end in a quiet riot of loving disobedience, but that's what happened during his encore performance at Vancouver's Orpheum Theatre on August 5th. For most North American's, Rodriguez is best known for being the artist whose story was documented in the Academy Award winning film "Searching for Sugarman". The man who went virtually unnoticed in his own country while unknowingly becoming one of the most influential artists in South Africa. I can't comment about why he wasn't more popular in North America without delving into a discussion about the hypocrisy of mainstream media, but I will say that it's not difficult to understand how the music of Sixto Rodriguez resonated with people in the midst of a crumbling, oppressive regime or why it still resonates with people today. There is timelessness to his music and gentleness to his voice, which at the same time is infused with an urgency that speaks universally to the human condition to listen, to understand, to change, and to forgive.
That's what had the historic 2,780 seat venue nearly packed on a hot, sticky and smoky summer's evening. The crowd was first treated to a sampling of songs from up and coming artist Lucette who charmed with her sweet, sleepy drawl and a catalog of murder ballads and personal musings. It's also worth mentioning that after her set she chose to watch Rodriguez perform from a seat near the front as opposed to from the side of the stage or even backstage. Props to you miss. Even though I knew that Sixto Rodriguez was nearly blind from glaucoma, the sight of him being led across the stage by his daughters broke my heart just a little bit. But only for a minute, because once the soft spoken, guitar wielding man in black began to sing the opening lines from "Climb Up On My Music, the evening became an affectionate exchange between the legendary artist and all those who chose to be there that night. Three musicians joined him on stage to provide accompaniment; guitar, bass and drums while Rodriguez perched on a chair in their midst with his musical battle-axe and a small assortment of hats. Though the folk legend may be soft and gentle, save for a few verses here and there Sixto Rodriguez' voice carried just as well as it did on his now infamous records some forty-five years ago. 118 VandalaMagazine.Com - July/August 2017
That night he was sweetly sassy with the boisterous crowd as they cheered him through a set laden with his own classics as well as a few from other musical legends. The last verse of the Elton John hit 'Your Song' became a sing-a-long and the modest musician had to quiet down several fans determined to hear him play his own swaying hit Wonder' more than once. He managed a quiet command of the stage while at times losing himself in the music and raising his guitar to strum madly and reveal a surprising intensity from a soft spoken gentleman who urged the crowd to 'be gentle with your anger'. By all accounts, Sixto Rodriguez remains fundamentally unchanged by the twists and turns his life has taken in the last 45 years. There is something positively transcendental about that, about him and what it's like to watch him live. There is nothing in what he does now that would suggest it's for any reason other than Sixto Rodriguez is simply being who Sixto Rodriguez is, has been and always will be. I want everybody here tonight to know that I want to be treated like an ordinary legend, he says laughing quietly, wryly. So it really wasn't a surprise when a pair of enthusiastic fans successfully helped him raise the roof at a venue where rushing the stage will get you escorted out. It was during the encore when the first fan rebelled, dancing her way to the front of the stage. When security caught up to her, another man took up the torch and for a few moments, they had security dashing back and forth before their combined enthusiasm won out and they were joined by a wave of other Rodriguez die hardy, myself included. Luckily, security let it ride and we all clapped and cheered along as the man of the hour finished the show with a rendition of Frank Sinatra's Live Until I Die before walking off the stage with his fist in the air and declaring "power to the people!". With barefoot frontman and guitarist Spencer Morphy leading the way, The Velveteins came out swinging July 12 at The Mint, a historic Los Angeles venue established in 1937. Somewhere between intense, impassioned vocals and instrumentals, Morphy managed to break a guitar string during the band's first song. But the mishap barely stalled the Edmonton trio. Morphy, along with percussionist Addison Hiller and bassist Dean Kheroufi, barreled through a roughly 30-minute set of their psychedelic, surf-inspired rock, playing songs from their first full-length album, Slow Wave, released in May. 120 VandalaMagazine.Com - July/August 2017

AFI and Circa Survive Bring Thundering Rock Show Article and Photos by L. Paul Mann The Central Coast of California has become a bit of a no man's land for hard rock and especially heavy metal bands since the dawn of the millennium. Santa Barbara County, home to copious amounts of live pop music has seen very little in the way of hardcore rock as of late. One of the last great heavy metal shows at the Santa Barbara Bowl was by the infamous rock band Tool in 1999. That amazing show landed the group a $50,000 fine for playing after the 10 PM curfew and playing too loud. In fact, a new sound ordinance was put into place after that show, and there hasn't been a particularly loud rock show there since. To the south in Ventura County, an occasional metal act will make it to the relatively small Ventura theater venue. To the North, the tiny SLO Brew venue also hosts an occasional metal show. But for most hardcore rock fans in the Tri Counties a long drive, North or South is the only way to catch a headline head banger band. The most unlikely of venues, the pristine Vina Robles Amphitheater in Paso Robles California has set out to change that unfortunate scenario. The gorgeous new amphitheater, in a spectacular rural mountain setting, has joined with Nederlander Concerts to bring big name hard core musical acts to the region. On August 2nd the venue hosted a double bill of hardcore rockers AF and Circa Survive. The beautiful outdoor venue, which barely holds 3000 people, is just big enough to attract headline acts. But virtually every seat in the house is visually and audibly a good one. The venue features wine by the glass or bottle from local vintners, beer from local brewers and gourmet food including wood fired pizzas and organic hamburgers. The affordably priced offerings along with free parking make the venue one of the best concert deals in central California. An 11 PM curfew ensures plenty of time for bands to finish their sets. But the best part of the venue for hard core music fans is the booming sound system. Without another structure in sight, the rural venue can blast the music as loud as they like. The amphitheater is topped with a massive PA high in the sky. The venue suited hardcore music fans and players alike at the show Wednesday night. Michigan rockers Citizen opened the show with a respectable set while the hot summer sun was still beating down on the venue. Many fans took advantage of the park like setting and retreated to picnic benches or the back lawn to watch the band from afar while eating and drinking copious amounts of goodies. The band's sound carried perfectly even to the very back lawn section. The band tire threw a short set with a respectable reception from the audience. By the time Post Hardcore rockers Circa Survive sauntered on stage just at dusk, a large crowd had already gathered in the pit area. The Philadelphia rockers are veterans of the music festival circuit and are about to release their sixth album, "The Amulet," next month. Over the last 13 years, the band fronted by charismatic lead singer Anthony Green have developed a loyal following, with many in the audience singing the chorus of the band's most well-known songs. Those with knowledge of the band know that Green and his bandmates are deep thinkers as well as hardcore musicians. The band's first album took inspiration from "The Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind." The album also features a hidden track based on the novel "House of Leaves." Green has incorporated his fights with emotional demons in his music and as a result becomes a whirling dervish of a performer. The animated singer leads his band into hardcore jams that had the crowd roaring its approval. 122 VandalaMagazine.Com July/August 2017
L ve Musio It seems hard to believe that the hardcore rock band AFI has been around for 26 years, especially since the animated lead singer Davey Havok is still only 41. But it was evident that as many of three generations of bands swarming the stage at the Paso Robles show have been following the band intently. Even before the band took the stage in the hot summer night air at 930PM, fans began a chant of "We are one through our bleeding" anticipating the traditional show opening song "Strength Through Wounding." The band did not disappoint opening with that song and proceeding to wow the crowd with a 14 song set that had the audience screaming most every chorus. At one point midway through the show Havoc leaped off the stage and ran to the middle of the amphitheater and sang a song swarmed by music fans. The songs came from most of the bands ten albums including their newest one simply titled "AFI." The set list included material as far back as 1999's "Black Sails in the Sunset" and all the way up to the new "AFI" album. Fans responded went wild for some of the band's radio hits including "Girl's Not Grey," and "Silver and Cold," "Beautiful Thieves" and "Miss Murder" made up the smoking encore. It was a great night of hardcore music, and the venue is doing it all over again on Tuesday night August 8th with a show by the legendary band Slayer, one of the Big Four in Heavy Metal and Lamb of God in a blockbuster hardcore double bill. Bret Michaels Brings A Rock Explosion Article and Photos by L. Paul Mann

One of the most well-known American rock singers, Bret Michaels, brought musical fireworks to his fans at the Chumash Casino Resort Santa Ynez on July 4th weekend. It was already a hot night both literally and figuratively at the resort, with summer evening temperatures near 80 F in the beautiful mountain resort town and with nearly every gambling space full in the expanded casino. Michaels gained fame as the charismatic lead singer of the rock group Poison in the 1980's and has been a regular fixture in American pop culture ever since, producing his music and appearing in television and movies for decades.
The singer and his band of veteran Ler/ .701 LAS musicians came onstage locked and loaded for an explosive show at the Samala Showroom. The usual etiquette of remaining seated at the venue until there is a call towards the end of the show to rush up to the stage was immediately abandoned, as Michaels called on the crowd to swarm the stage during the opening song. The group of adulate fans responded immediately rushing forward, and the energy level never waned for the remainder of the show. 2
Michaels was voted the best heavy metal singer of all time, in 20061 by Hit Parader magazine and the jovial singer connected with the crowd almost immediately. Playing a mix of Poison hits, with southern rock covers of bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, Michaels, and the band had the crowd singing and swaying throughout the set Michaels as a seasoned performer has an uncanny ability to make nearly everyone in the crowd feel like he is speaking directly to them, frequently pointing and smiling at individuals all about the venue. The singer often bantered with the crowd, acknowledging the festive July 4th occasion and frequently mentioning his interests in charity organizations from veterans affairs to diabetes research. His interests are heartfelt and personal, as his great Uncle was killed in action in World War II and Michaels himself, was diagnosed with Diabetes as a six-year-old child. The iconic singer was careful not to inject any politics into his show, keeping a jovial and positive attitude while inserting the need to support veterans and charity organizations. The fast paced set Michaels showcasing his talents, not only as a singer but also as a multi-instrumentalist, playing percussions, guitars and harmonica. The band featured crack veteran rockers, along with some of Michaels road crew invited to play along on various instruments. A Strange Evening at Hollywood Forever Cemetery With a Concert by Sufian Stevens and Friends Article and Photos by L. Paul Mann It was already going to be an unusual evening in Hollywood which is saying something in a town known for its strange excesses especially in the entertainment world. Sufjan Stevens was set to play his new exotic album Planetarium as part of the summer evening concert series at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. The series features esoteric artists out of the mainstream of typical pop music. The concerts take place in the lush green gardens amidst the mausoleums of some of the cities elite list of departed souls. The graveyard is full of Hollywood mover and shakers, including some famous rockers. As thousands of people found a spot to lay out their blankets and picnics for the much-loved event, the sun began to set over the dramatic landscape. The sun bounced off tombstones with the faces of long dead celebrities etched on them. In a great irony, the July 20th concert happened to fall on the birthday of recently departed rocker Chris Cornell. His fresh grave site was right next to the concert. In an even more bizarre and unnerving twist, Cornell's good friend Chester Bennington had just followed his friend into oblivion just hours before. The 4lyear old Bennington had helped give the eulogy for Cornell at the same spot just two months ago. There was already a shrine forming at the gravesite for the 41-year-old singer of Linkin Park as the summer sun reflected on the spot. The concert began with an acoustic set by Thousand Oaks singer and songwriter Angelo De Augustine. The 24 year took the stage armed only with an acoustic guitar took the stage and seemed visibly nervous. "I am sorry my voice is shaky. This is by far the largest crowd that I ever played for." The young folk singer went on to thank Sufjan Stevens who has had a hand in helping produce the new artist. The young singer eventually found his voice, and as his face was painted by the brilliant setting summer sun, he began singing like an angel. Considering the location, the singers soothing songs matched perfectly with the tenor and mood of the evening and the audience seemed pleased with what they heard. After a short intermission, Sufjan Stevens and his band took the stage just as twilight began to fall across the cemetery. By this time the crowd had swollen sprawled across the vast green lawns and nestled between mausoleums in all directions. Stevens welcomed the audience and immediately launched into his new project Planetarium. Stevens was joined by the core band on the album including Nico Muhly an American contemporary classical music composer and arranger, from New York. Also in the band were Bryce David Dessner, an American composer, and guitarist based in Paris, best known as a member of the band The National, and James McAlister the long time collaborating drummer for Stevens. The band also featured several classical musicians playing string instruments. The four began the Planetarium project several years and had just recently released the album which consists of 17 tracks totaling more than 75 minutes of music. The concept album revolves around planets in solar system with an electronic soundtrack to match the personality of the different worlds. The band played the experimental piece in its entirety with a video background that featured quite literally spacey graphics. Led by Stevens who also has an angelic singing voice the band created a soundtrack that sounded a bit like a modern Pink Floyd concert. The concert, with its nearly perfect outdoor summer night setting in the cemetery, was a unique an entering performance that pleased the large crowd and resulted in an extended standing ovation at the finale. It was a melancholy but somehow perfectly fitting evening of music in the heart of Hollywood, with the spirits lingering in the darkness. 130 VandalaMagazine.Com - July/August 2017
