The Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery is pleased to present Dream for Light Years, the culmination of a two-year collaboration between California-based painter Ali Smith and Blair School of Music professor of composition Michael Alec Rose.
The project originated in April 2018, when Rose emailed Smith to ask if he could have permission to create a suite of music responding to her paintings. This set off an ongoing correspondence between artist and musician. In following months, Rose shared examples of music while Smith sent images of new works. One painting-in-progress that Smith revealed was titled Dream for Light Years. Over the next two years, this painting—and a namesake composition by Rose—would evolve. These interconnected works led to the idea for a shared exhibition that might shed light on how one art form might inspire another, even across remarkably different mediums and creative methods.
