WHAT's HAPPENING @ the HAMMER (museum), my blog

Thursday, February 26, 2015 2/24/15 this was one of the best experiences I had at Hammer Museum + Biblical Inspiration

2/24/15 this was one of the best experiences I had at Hammer Museum...mostly friendly reception by the various "guards" and staff...looks like they've made some changes...the "security" is in normal clothes..almost look like students (maybe they are)...rather than the service they used to use.. I like it better...they're still very watchful about every move you make but they seem more engaged than the "temps" or other security guards that used to seem so bored

walking to the hammer...nice fountains by the side of the road (wilshire)

LOCAL COLOR !

THEY ALWAYS have something very BIG and eye-catching on this wall as you enter...

they also had these "performers" sitting and/or standing in various places...almost like STILL-LIFE art...one of the staff said they do it ALL day..wow! kind of cool... and funny..very neat..unique..

most of the exhibits were "family friendly"...actually ALL I do believe..no nudity or pornography this time around...very nice..

a few pics from one of the films playing..

one of the staff...he asked to see my sticker, which I carry because it always falls off if I stick it to my jacket

this was very NEAT

this was COOL !

ALSO THEY ADDED A NEW WALKWAY over the courtyard...beautiful and very handy...good job!

a few pieces of the permanent collection

i like the UPRITCHARD exhibit !

the presbyterian church near the hammer

good job hammer ! you seem more dynamic & engaged than I've seen in previous visits... keep it going ! *************************

"Give More: InsideOUT Writers Speak" (juveniles tried as adults, poetry p1...this is a nice thing done by hammer & ucla writing program for juvenile offenders (tried as adults)...some of the poetry they wrote...let us keep our prisoners in our thoughts & prayers...; we are ALL sinners... not just prisoners in jail...; yes some have done horrendous things, others less horrendous, ...some others drug-related offenses ...; but let us also remember the injustices in our society that sometimes perpetuate the criminal problem...this is

something the hammer museum big-wigs (with their big money) need to think about as well..which is why this is the least they can do ...and need to do much more re social issues rather than spend all their time figuring out how to shock & offend conservatives while pretending (or fooling themselves) that they love the poor because they are liberals. Fwd: notes from hammer forum re venezuela

my handwritten notes from hammer forum re venezuela...this "forum" is always moderated by a guy named Ian Masters, who is heard regularly on KPFK and has the intellectually-sounding British accent & cynicism towards anything & everything conservative & republican...even when it's a non-partisan issue...he only took a few cheapshots at conservatives during this particular event; the speakers on the other hand remained professional and devoted to the topic, not partisan politics. re yuri ancarani, hammer exhibit 2014-15 ...

this exhibit was morally neutral...hammer was NOT trying to shock and offend moderate & conservatives with this display Posted by Endof JayLeno at 10:46 AM No comments: Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest

Friday, December 5, 2014 photos, at hammer museum, early december 2014

above: as you can see here... I purposely tried to keep it a distant view..but I think you

can still see that there are some definite pornographic images in this so-called "art exhibit" at the hammer museum...it's definitely NOT the first time nor the last, but I voice my objection to it, and encourage others to do so as well. It's NOT necessary to be exposed to this in an "art museum".

one small sign outside the door gives a small warning..apparently kids can walk thru here with their parents..

Friday, December 5, 2014 Fwd: art film by yuri ancarani at hammer until jan 18 2015

art film by yuri ancarani at hammer until jan 18 2015...on the lower floor there is a darkroom where they usually show films...and have beanbag chairs to lounge on while viewing...these are usually unique and

sometimes strange but nothing you need to be afraid of allowing your kids to see...unless bizarre is offensive to you or your kids...at least I have never seen anything morally debatable in these films ..ie nothing of the sexual nature you might find in the temporary wall-art exhibits at the hammer; I watched part of one about scuba divers and the life they live underwater doing maintenance of some sort; and another about a giant bulldozer crushing rock..and I saw a few seconds of a film about some sort of surgery..close-ups of the scalpel and an internal camera (ie inside the body).. . Fwd: art by n.dash at hammer, sept-january2014

Art by n.dash at hammer, septjanuary2014...now this is more acceptable, even if quite abstract artwork..at least we're not confronted with issues of "art versus porno" and childish security guards behind our

back. I am much more content with the random abstract art they have at the hammer as opposed to the "art versus porno" variety...not much to say about this artist..speaks for itself.... i attended the forum at the hammer re venezuela

...moderated by Ian Masters as usual..he's the guy on KPFK 90.7fm L.A. ..who is ALWAYS bashing republicans and conservatives..not

even in disguise but blatantly showing his dislike of anything towards the RIGHT..; AND he did so again at this forum about venezuela...sneaking in a few jabs here and there..surprisingly he didn't get many laughs or applause from the audience when he did so..maybe the predominantly liberal audiences at the hammer and these forums is starting to see the light; PLUS they were talking about the problems in venezuela..and how socialism is failing for the people there.. two excellent speakers provided information about all the differeent issues and problems for the country...and a little bit about how Columbia fits into the picture.. the professor spoke strongly and knowledgeably about all things venezuela..clearly an expert on the topic; the journalist also very knowledgeable but less scholarly than the professor. It was a good discussion, even if Ian had to insult us conservatives as usual..; albeit at one point he did say something to the effect of maybe the

republican conservatives are right about socialism (ie the failure of socialism being that nobody is motivated to strive ahead and do new things, etc)...but made clear he was being a little facetious..; why does he hate all things conservative & capitalistic so much ? Fwd: hammer1, re heinecken , also calendar

so I stopped in at the hammer a few days ago (early december 2014) and as always didn't know what to expect..all new exhibits...i usually space my visits every 2 or 3 months (for the art exhibits, sometimes I come more

frequently for special presentations). ..and as you can probably tell from my other posts I am NOT always fond of what the hammer has to offer in the revolving art exhibits (albeit their permanent collection is awesome)...; nonetheless, I try to give the temporary exhibits a fair chance , except when the socalled "art" is nothing more than pornography..not even disguised pornography..; we ALL know when a nude is beautiful art versus pornography...all of your physical senses automatically detect it...trust your senses...and hammer has definitely without a doubt numerous times exposed us to pornography , plain & simple. And they've done it again with parts of the Heinecken exhibit..NOT all of it, but a few pieces (not shown here)..including one or more of nude women alongside eachother...supposedly in a suggestive pose..; and the further problem at the hammer is that you FEEL the presence of the security guards watching you watch the

art. So it is very AWKWARD to look at suggestive nudity with young men in uniforms watching you look at it. And they seem to have a whole new crew of security guards...none of whom I recognized or remembered. I didn't even see the one guy who seems to have been there forever..a decent fellow who I came to rely upon being there. I asked one of the new african-american guards why there were so many new faces...and he said they were "temps"...said there was a special event..but he didn't know what was the special event; I looked at the calendar and didn't see anything about any special events, other than the regular periodic movies and forums, etc. And he called me "man" which is pejorative around los angeles. If somebody lower in stature (in terms of education etc, like a store clerk or guard et al) calls you "man" or "dude" or even sometimes "sir" with the wrong tone, they are being CHEEKY and what you might call a "punk." He

definitely was not being truly respectful. So I cut off the conversation, and walked out of the Heinecken exhibit. That's the other problem. Even if you want to truly try to understand the artistic aspect of some of the exhibits at Hammer that display nudity, if you have uneducated "punk" security guards thinking that you are simply enjoying looking at nudity in a pornographic manner, and not truly understanding the potential artistic aspect of it, you might as well be going to a xrated theatre, with all the associations that comes with it. If you are any sort of respected person, especially conservative, in the community and these punk guards disrespect you for viewing the art on display at the hammer, ...you're better off not going at all. Or if you do...beware! Posted by Endof JayLeno at 11:10 AM No comments: Email ThisBlogThis!Share to TwitterShare to FacebookShare to Pinterest Labels: hammer museum

"...The other galleries had weird modern stuff, a lot of it "challenging the conventional notions of good taste" or cynical commentary on consumerism or materialism etc. The best part of the modern art galleries is to read the commentary in each section. ""Not

What We Expected, Disappointed!"

Reviewed June 2, 2014 The permanent collection was all hidden away and on hiatus. We came expecting to see the Van Gogh's, Monet's, etc..., but were greeted some downright lousy current displays. The Parisian Tea & Morphine exhibit was the only thing that was really interesting.

hammer museum, july 2014

[hammer is NOT a place for kids or families, at least not the exhibitions} not shown here, but there was also a graphic ORAL SEX painting or piece of art of some sort. I was too embarrassed by it to stand and take a photo. Also they temporarily took down the classic, permanent art section (nice van gogh

paintings & a rembrandt among others) so they could display some sort of gay & lesbian exhibition. Last time I was there they had a photo of a naked african-american man sort of "playgirl" style. Is this ART ? or is ALL of HAMMER MUSEUM propaganda and political statements intended to insult conventional standards? Is this what the founder intended? Is he rolling in his grave?

Monday, May 5, 2014 WELCOME !

WELCOME! ive been visiting the hammer museum for many years now...and have seen many of the various exhibits come & go...and of course hammer museum always wants to try to be as "alternative" & risque as possible most of the time...seeming to go out of

their way to offend or challenge traditional sensibilities. Sometimes the quirkyness is cute or unique and even seems to have some redeeming qualities. Other times it is SO far "out there" it is beyond art, and seems to be solely to offend traditional values & simply say "So there, what are you going to do about it ?" to put it nicely. Sometimes I wonder what Hammer himself would think

about the way the Hammer has turned ? On the other hand there are other things that are nice about the hammer. They have various free screenings of films, and other for a small fee, often with personal appearances by various filmmakers, et al. And then there are poetry readings as well as some unique Hammer presentations that are not necessarily intended to offend.

I am starting this blog on May 5, 2014 so that I can "talk back" . Too often I go thru the Hammer and feel offended and I leave ...and I realize that somebody at the Hammer may have an ulterior motive..namely to make those of us with traditional values feel HELPLESS. They want us to walk away thinking, "I don't like it but there's nothing I can do about it." Well, that's not

necessarily true. I have written letters re previous exhibits that were too meaningless and even seemed to be simply nothing more than pornography ( & no I don't think any and all nude art is pornography, in fact I value good, artistic, art about the human body, but any person with a conscience will know the difference instinctively between art versus

pornography. I won't go into the differences here. ) And so we can write. We can blog. We can go online. And we can refuse to go. For that matter, there is no longer an admission fee so whether we go or not it apparently will NOT affect their budget. They probably have an ample endowment which allows them to do pretty much whatever they want. However,

they DO seem to still be interested in #'s. At first when they started allowing free admission any day of the week you didn't need a sticker. But now they have reinstituted the sticker program (need to ask the bookstore employee for a sticker upon arrival) apparently so they know how many people are coming. Thus, low #'s & letters of disapproval may make a difference in the art they display.

Last week I walked thru the gallery and one of the exhibits was of a nude, AfricanAmerican man...with photos of his genitalia all over the walls. I didn't see anything artistic about it at all, and it has nothing to do with race or gender. Sure, if I must look at nudity on display I would prefer female, but even if it were female genitalia all over the wall in a similar manner I

wouldn't consider it art and wouldn't be interested in staring at it. For that matter, they have a video of a woman giving a speech during which this woman gradually disclothes herself and at a certain point is making a public speech in the nude. This may be making more of a political statement I suppose, but again, if the Hammer museum does TOO much blatant nudity it fails to make any real

meaningful statement and loses it's value other than shock value. One thing I noticed to my pleasure, however, is they finally REMOVED the gigantic sign that said "STOP WHITE SUPERIORITY" or something of that sort. It seemed to be a sign from the 60's and had been hanging there for so long...as a permanent exhibit in the hallway..and finally they

realized it was well past time for it to come down. That's a positive sign that somebody is alive in the administration. But are they alive enough ? We shall see what happens in the future. Now I have a place to TALK BACK and not feel helpless. Join me !
