A LETTER FROM OUR CEO Welcome to Modere, the truly forward-thinking live clean company I am so very proud to lead. From the very beginning, we chose to make innovation our calling card. Driven by this guiding principle, we pioneered our first clean label formula – shampoo – more than 30 years ago. Or so they were, before the advent of gray water reuse projects. The first U.S. soil-biocompatible laundry detergent was developed in 1989 and the legalization of gray water in Santa Barbara shortly followed, igniting the trend to conserve water and reuse it in everything from public parks to personal gardens. And by May of 1991, five other Californian cities legalized the recycling of gray water, further popularizing the innovative idea of wastewater reuse1.
WHERE THE WATER FLOWS
It only takes a moment. We wash our hands, the water is gone and we don’t think about it again. But where is it now? Where does its journey end? Surely it doesn’t magically disappear, but the destination remains mysterious. That ‘used water’, also known as gray water, actually begins its journey through the mazes of pipes and waterworks to be combined with sewage, where it is rendered toxic. Any previous benefits are then lost.

What did these cities see in gray water? A vision of green lawns and parks without wasting much-needed fresh water. The possibility of reduced water bills and less wastewater entering sewers2. And ultimately, an essential path to a better future for the environment. Companies have caught wind of this growing environmental trend as well, and have begun producing whole product lines that are gray water certified. At Modere, we are proud to be leading this movement with our gray water safe and biodegradable household product line.
We’ve specifically formulated our household essentials* without the harsh agents and residues that similar products tend to include. The result? WE’VE NEVER USED SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) AND NEVER WILL
THE POWER OF NEVER The concept of never is powerful precisely because it is daunting. If something has never been done, then it appears impossible. But at Modere, we know it’s not. Over 30 years ago, we started with a single product: Shampoo. In the process of creating our first product, we had to make a decision: Use conventional ingredients, or strive for something safer. We took the road less travelled. Instead of formulating with SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), we chose safer and opted for more sound ingredients. And, while we didn’t know it at the time, that decision would go on to define our entire company. SLS was the first ingredient to which we said no, starting a list of ingredients we refuse to use that now numbers in the thousands and continues to grow. So, when we say that we’ve never used SLS and never will, we understand the undertaking.

This resulted in companies turning to artificial foaming agents so their customers would feel like they were getting the most amount of “clean” for their money. But personal care and wellness products are largely about the comfort of feeling that what you are using is working.
