Hello! Thank you for taking the time to view my portfolio.
In May 2017, I will graduate from Malone University. I will be certified to teach primary grades pre-kindergarten through 3rd grade, and in special education settings kindergarten through 12th grade. From a very young age, I knew that teaching is what I’ve been created to do. Nothing gives me more joy in this world than inspiring, mentoring, loving, encouraging, and growing young minds. I have worked with children across the world. I spent time in Thailand, working with children in orphanages and children who had fell victim to human trafficking. I have worked with English Language Learners of many languages. As a teacher, I understand, and hold great value in teaching with a real-world mindset, cultural influences, and active discovery. I believe it is important to teach students to become global citizens that know the value and importance of making a positive impact on their community. As a teacher, my mission is to seek out student interest and nurture those interests and abilities. I am looking forward to my first year of teaching and growing as an educator! ~Vanessa Penick
Experience with other cultures‌
I believe that all children have the ability to learn and grow. Each and every student is unique and of great value. Each student is going to have varying strengths and weaknesses. I believe that my job as a teacher is to foster those differences in a way that promotes effective learning. Students learn best in an environment that is positive, safe, and challenging.
I have had experience working with students in each of the following schools (20+ hours per school): Harter Elementary Youtz Elementary Glenwood Intermediate School Walker Elementary Sandy Valley High School Amherst Elementary Minerva Elementary (Student-teacher in 2nd grade & intervention K-3) I have had experience working with the following curricula: Superkids Everyday Math
I have passed all of my state exams required for my teaching license.
Here is where my teaching license will be when I receive it.
Here is where my final evaluation from my University Supervisor will be when I receive it.
Section One: Students
This is an example of how I would get to know the interests of my students. Student interest plays a big part in motivating students.
This is a way I would gather information on how students learn best.
Section Two: Content Knowledge
This is an example of a pre and a post assessment that I would use before beginning a unit on contractions.
This is an example of a form of data monitoring that I used to track students’ reading progress.
Routines are essential to children. Below are a few pictures of some routines and visuals that I would implement in my classroom.
I am a strong supporting of PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports). As stated directly from the PBIS website, “PBIS IS a preventionoriented way for school personnel to (a) organize evidence-based practices, (b) improve their implementation of those practices, and (c) maximize academic and social behavior outcomes for students. PBIS supports the success of ALL students.
As a teacher, I believe that it is extremely important to give students clear expectations and choices. My classroom rules, rewards, and consequences will be just that.
I believe it is highly important to have excellent communication with parents. As teachers, we are blessed to watch over one’s most prized possessions, their kids. Research has proven that parental involvement is the most influential aspect of a student’s academic success.
Here is an example of a way I would organize and keep track of communication between parents and teacher.
CPR First-aid Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness Communicable Diseases
I had recently attended the following 6 hour workshops: • Child Abuse and Neglect Awareness • CPR, First-Aid, & AED • Communicable Diseases In addition, I attended a district PD day over Universal Design for Learning at Minerva Local School District.
