Metaphor:
A man’s mistakes are his portals of discovery. - James Joyce
Context:
The rejection of mistakes in society. There is the mindset that mistakes should never exist, but it is from mistakes that we learn, it is from mistakes that we remember and produce better results. People view mistakes as undesirable because we crave certainty and perfection and avoid chaos. Fear of mistakes results in lack of courage to voice opinions, and this discourages thinking.
Target:
14 - 25 years old
Execution:
1) Value / Perception of Mistakes 2) Encouragement of mistake-making

1
Value of mistakes / Perception of mistakes - see the beauty in mistakes In glitch art, randomness and chaos are embraced, and mistakes are valued and intentionally created. Glitch Art - why do people do it? 1) destruction vs revitalization 2) systemic failings vs make-shift solutions 3) end product vs process Scope: Mistakes that are already made, like spelling mistakes, design errors and any other digital visual errors. Execution: Finding errors and changing them into art. This will also become the style for the exhibition.

Encourage mistake-making - only through making a mistake will you discover something Scope: Mistakes in your process of an activity. Execution: 1) ‘Wrong’ instructions - instructions that tell people to make a mistake 2) OR Ambiguous instructions - only people who do not carry out the ‘correct’ way will discover the hidden. 3) OR Correct instructions - only people who really make a mistake will discover the hidden. 4) Remove the backspace from the keyboard - shows person’s thought processes when typing / forming their sentences

Tickets
tickets with torn edges - people view tears as mistakes too, hence the incorporation of torn edges as part of the ticket style
For the torn-edges ickets, the perforated line is not cut properly so that when the ticket is torn, more tears will be formed on the torn edge, instead of a straight line.

The 3M Post-It Invention WH0SE FAULT: Spencer Silver As a chemist in 3M, he was carrying out experiments with the aim of creating a strong adhesive, but instead he ended up with something that ‘defeated’ the purpose of an adhesive. However, he did think there was potential in the new adhesive, and held seminars in 3M for years to share his discovery and asked for better applications of his adhesive.
The Pacemaker WHOSE FAULT: Wilson Greatbatch Wilson was working as a a medical researcher and he was trying to build a device that could record the heart’s rhythm. He had pulled the wrong resistor out of the box and after assembling the device, realised that it gave off a rhythmic electrical pulse that reminded him of the human heart. He remembered his conversation with other researchers about the possibility of electrical stimulation being the substitute for heart beats, and st went on to refine the device before finally inventing the first implantable pacemaker.
In 1974, a colleague named Art Fry attended Silver’s seminar and ultimately came up with the idea of sticky and removable bookmarks when he was singing in his church’s choir and his scrap paper bookmarks kept falling out. Then on, both Fry and Silver went on to develop the prototype and its marketing strategy. Left: Silver Right: Fry
The Scotchgard WH0SE FAULT: Patsy Sherman In 1952, Sherman was a young chemical researcher who joined 3M at a time when they were trying to create a new product from fluorochemicals. In 1953, as she was working on developing a rubber material that would not deteriorate from jet aircraft fuels, a lab assistant spilled some experimental synthetic latex Sherman made, on her own new tennis shoes. The assistant was merely annoyed by her inability to clean off the drops with an soap, alcohol and other solvents, but Sherman immediately recognised there was potential in the resilient compound. Together with fellow 3M chemist Sam Smith, they worked to develop the first versatile fabric stain repellent and material protector, which was released in 1956.
In 1908, 3M launched the Post-It notepad and it became and will continue to be a success.

0UTC0ME 0F MISTAKES: The 0prah Winfrey Show 0UTC0ME 0F MISTAKES: Model A of the Ford Motor Company In 1885, when Henry Ford saw a gas-powered engine for the first time, he was immediately fascinated. He envisioned of a new kind of transportation, one that did not require horses and could run on its own power, and made it his goal to create what he imagined. In 1896, he launched his first prototype, Quadricycle, onto the streets of Detroit, but it was not suitable for large scale production due to it being small in size and incomplete. He then worked on a second sm automobile with simplicity and compactness in mind. The product was a success but despite having financial backing, which was difficult to find at that time for automobiles, Ford failed again, for the investors had lost faith in him as he took longer than expected to launch production. He looked into his mistakes and convinced businessman Murphy to invest in him again. However, he found it difficult to work with people who did not understand automobile design or who did not have the same high standard for the automobile as he did, and left the company eventually, which did him no good with everyone in the industry.
The success stories of mistakes and people whose life had many mistakes.
Oprah Winfrey
Eventually, he founded Ford Motor Company by partnering with Alexander Malcomson, and was heavily involved in the production process, before finally putting our Model A, which became a success.
Her life with her mother when she was young was of poor conditions, and she was sexualy abused and raped. However, she struggled on and had moved from Mississippi to Tennesse to live with her father, and achieved excellence in her education while workin part-time reading news at a radio station. She majored in communications in Tennesse State, and quickly landed a job in Nashville as a co-anchor for evening news, alongside Jerry Turner. The station fo management saw her as a promotional material for broader viewership and marketed her fiercely, but then blamed her when the show failed as people were disappointed and her personality clashed with Turner. She was dropped to writing and street reporting, which did not turn out well for her too, as she produced writings slow and was personally involved in the stories she covered. However, she used those lessons to evaluate herself and realised she liked television but hated television news, enjoyed covering human stories but could not be emotionally detached, and loved being a host but could not co-host unless the person connects with her. She had the opportunity to co-host a talk show with Richard Sher, and it then led build her popularity, after which she went on to produce her own talk show The Oprah sh Winfrey Show, and continued her success.
