PRESIDENT’S WELCOME
POLO MANAGER’S MESSAGE
On behalf of our staff and Board of Directors, I am honored to welcome you to the 58th year of polo at Eldorado.Your participation as a member, student, spectator, or sponsor is greatly appreciated in keeping polo alive and thriving. Eldorado Polo Club’s commitment begins with our staff: Graham Bray, Polo Manager; Debbie Morrison and Rob Roenisch, Assistant Polo Managers; James a’Court, Marketing and Events Director; Kyle Fargey, Polo Academy Professional Instructor; as well as our reliable office staff of Diane Thacker and Darlene Molton. We owe great thanks to Eldorado’s entire staff for their hard work and dedication; without each one of them, polo at our club would be unsustainable. This season, Eldorado will host monthly 12 Goal, 6 Goal, and Pro Pool league play. We pride ourselves on hosting the most competitive polo in the western U.S., and we welcome players of all levels and ages—beginning with the dedicated group of youngsters in Junior Polo. For more detailed information on this season’s action-packed polo schedule, visit www.eldoradopoloclub.com. Off the polo field, we have enlisted the help of ROC’s Firehouse Grille to manage The Cantina at Eldorado (which is open 6 days a week!), as well as the Clubhouse on Sundays. If you want to join in the camaraderie that has drawn players and guests to Eldorado for more than half of a century, join us for polo and the After Polo Party each Sunday! All of the above said, we are especially proud of our partnership with Goldenvoice, the host company of the Coachella and Stagecoach music events. Their participation helps to preserve the sport of polo at Eldorado. We are always open to hearing your suggestions and feedback as we strive to make Eldorado all that it can be. Sincerely,
Michael C. Ward President of the Board of Directors Eldorado Polo Club

EXPERT FASHION STYLE TIPS
© photography by Dominic James
Fashion Designer & Polo Player, Elizabeth Welborn: “Personal style is key to any outfit. Contrary to popular belief, it is not necessary to wear a big hat and a polka dot dress to watch a polo tournament! Polo naturally has a unique style that mixes sporty horse culture, equestrian flair and international personality. My personal style is a mix of West Coast, country, bohemian and Latin: colorful tunics and cowboy boots with a poncho for the evening. I am also a strong proponent of the forever-elegant outfit of all white: a chic white linen top with white jeans or pants. This can be easily accessorized with an equestrian belt and leather sandals. Add a great cuff or unique necklace to truly make an outfit. And don’t forget a stylish set of sunglasses!” Elizabeth Welborn is the Principal Fashion Designer and Founder of Stick and Ball Co., a unique fashion and accessory line inspired by travel, South American style and Elizabeth’s favorite sport: polo.

POLO: A SPECTATOR’S GUIDE THE GAME AND FIELD Outdoor polo is played on a field measuring 300 by 160 yards. There are between 4 and 6 periods of play, and each period is called a “chukker.” Each chukker is 7 ½ minutes long, and players have 4 minutes between chukkers to change ponies. Players bring at least one pony per chukker to the game, and many players will bring a few spare ponies in case one of their mounts gets fatigued. In order to neutralize any weather or field conditions that might affect goal-scoring, the teams switch goal ends after each goal is scored.
POLO PONIES AND GAME EQUIPMENT Most polo ponies are thoroughbred or part thoroughbreds between 5 and 20 years of age. Ponies are selected for their agility, speed, endurance and intelligence. Both ponies and players wear equipment that protects their legs and joints from impact with the ball or other ponies. Ponies have their manes clipped and tails secured to avoid getting tangled with opponents’ ponies and equipment. The polo mallet is made up of a flexible bamboo shaft (often Manau cane) and a hardwood head. The length of mallet ranges from 49 to 54 inches, depending on the height of the horse and player. The outdoor polo ball is made up of solid hard plastic, approximately 3 ½ inches in diameter.
LINE OF THE BALL AND RIGHT OF WAY The most important rule ensuring the safety of players and ponies is the “line of the ball.” When the ball is in play, the player who is closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the line of the ball. Between that player and the ball is a right-of-way corridor that is wide enough to accommodate the player and pony (the line of the ball), and opposing players cannot cross that line or approach it too closely or at too sharp an angle. Crossing another player’s line or infringing on their right of way constitutes a foul and resulting penalty, as determined by the umpires.
THE RIDE-OFF AND HOOK In order to challenge the line of the ball from another player, a player may execute a “ride-off.”A ride-off is similar to a body check in hockey: a player and pony make parallel contact, or contact at an angle of no more than 45 degrees, with an opposing player and pony. The ride-off is an attempt to challenge or neutralize a play, or take control of the line of the ball. The hook is a maneuver whereby a player hooks, or impedes, an opponent’s mallet. Penalties are called for hooking if an opponent’s mallet is above the shoulder (“high hook”), if a player reaches across, over or in front of ponies’ legs or back (“cross hook”), or for hooking in an overly aggressive or dangerous nature (“slash hook”).

PLAYERS & POSITIONS There are four players on an outdoor polo team, and teams may be comprised of men and women. Polo is one of the only sports in the world where men and women compete with and against each other! All players on the field are able to score goals, and are expected to execute offensive and defensive plays. The numbers 1, 2, 3 or 4 assigned to players, as represented on their team jerseys, specifically define their responsibilities and position throughout the game.
1
2
THE CLOSER.
THE WORKHORSE.
The number 1 player assumes the most offensive position on the team, working in the zone closest to the team’s own goal. The number 1 player is a crucial team asset, as they are in closest proximity to goal to score! This said, most number one players are the lowest-rated players on their team, allowing the higher rated players to do the work of moving the ball downfield. On defense, the number 1 player typically covers/marks the opposing team’s number 4.
The number 2 player is a hard working team member. They play an important offensive role, by running through and scoring goals, or feeding the ball to the number 1 player; as well as a crucial defensive role, covering the opposing teams’ number 3 player. Look for the number 2 player to make quick transitions between their offensive role, i.e. getting to the ball, and their defensive responsibilities, i.e. marking their “man” or opposing player.
3
4
THE QUARTERBACK.
THE BACK.
The number 3 player is responsible for field advantage and game strategy. This resourceful player must have a knack for making long passes to the number 1 and 2 players on the team, and also be able to cover a lot of ground, moving the ball up the field. The number 3 player is often the player on the team with the highest handicap rating.
Number 4 is the primary defensive player, who is responsible for guarding the goal and preventing the opposing team from scoring. This player is often the most experienced or best defensive player on the team, who controls the back portion of the field, allowing the other 3 players to commit to more offensive plays.
THE HEART OF POLO IN THE DESERT
25
GAME DAY GLOSSARY CHUKKER: A period of play in polo, 7 ½ minutes long. DIVOT STOMP: At half-time, spectators are invited onto the polo field to replace the divots created by the ponies during play. FLAGGER: Behind each set of goal posts, a flagger waves a flag above the shoulders to signify that a goal was scored or below the waist to signify that no goal was scored. GOAL: One goal is scored anytime the ball crosses the line between the goal posts, at any height. HANDICAP: Each member player of the USPA (United States Polo Association) holds a handicap between -2 (or C) and 10.The higher the handicap, the better the player. THIRTY-SECOND BELL: Bell or horn heard thirty seconds before the end of each chukker. THROW-IN: Game play is started or resumed by an umpire throw-in, or bowl-in, down the center of a facing lineup of teams. UMPIRE: Games are officiated by two mounted Umpires, and one Referee (“third man”) on the field sidelines, who are responsible for enforcing the rules of play.

JUNIOR POLO
Every weekend during the Eldorado polo season, you can find throngs of junior polo players on Field 4, in front of the Cantina. For many junior players, as well as their families and friends, this is the highlight of the weekend! Kids ranging in age from three to sixteen years old come out to learn the game and practice their skills, in a friendly, safe environment that includes instruction and umpiring by rated local players. The junior polo program at Eldorado Polo Club dates back to the late 1980s. Many successful professional polo players launched their careers as youngsters in the program, including

Fred H. Mannix, Jason Crowder, Jeff Hall, Joe Wayne Barry, Jesse Bray, Patrick Uretz, Nicolai Galindo and many more. In homage to some of the most active individuals behind the early junior program, Eldorado hosts three junior polo tournaments each season: the Joe Barry Memorial Tournament; the Artie Cameron Memorial Tournament, hosted by Artie Cameron Jr., and the Fish Creek Tournament, hosted by Fred P. Mannix. In 2014, a record number of junior players participated in the tournaments. Join us in 2015 for more exciting junior polo at Eldorado—where the next generation of great polo players are born!
