We know that you will all enjoy the competitive tournaments and excellent fields and facilities. This season we will host 12-Goal, 8-Goal, 4-Goal and Pro Pool league play, making for some of the most competitive polo in the Western United States. We look forward to welcoming record crowds to the club in March for the always-exciting 6-Goal Governor's Cup and 12-Goal Skins Tournament. Eldorado’s commitment to polo is managed by a great team of dedicated staff: Diane Thacker, Controller; Debbie Morrison, Assistant Polo Manager; James a’Court, Marketing and Events Director; Miguel Ramos, Field Foreman; Kyle Fargey, Polo Academy Professional Instructor; as well as many other talented support staff. If you are interested in taking up the great sport of polo, we encourage you contact the Polo & Riding Academy, which offers individual and group instruction for players of all levels. The Cantina Restaurant at Eldorado Polo Club will feature a new menu for the 2017–2018 season, along with new a General Manager, Martin Aldana. Johnny Catti is back along with his staff of friendly faces, so plan to enjoy the polo action or relax with a refreshing drink on the field side patio, which offers one of the best views in the desert! The Cantina is open to the public Tuesday to Sunday throughout the polo season. In closing, we would like to recognize our successful ongoing affiliation with Goldenvoice, the promoters of the Coachella, Stagecoach and Desert Trip concerts. The relationship has proven very beneficial for polo with many improvements to club infrastructure as well as significant field refurbishment. This has resulted in a premium playing surface for both horse and rider. Eldorado currently has a lease agreement to host polo until May 31, 2020, with a view to negotiate new terms to continue polo at the Eldorado Polo Club for years to come. Your participation as a member, student, spectator, or sponsor is greatly appreciated. We are always open to receiving your feedback as we strive to make Eldorado all that it can be, and we wish everyone the very best polo season. Sincerely,

ELDORADO POLO

WAT C H I N G POLO BY TONY GREGG

W

atching a game of polo—also known as hockey on horseback—can be somewhat confusing at times, but it needn’t be.

With just a relatively brief introduction to the basics of the game, the players and the horses, you will be able to watch and enjoy the game with absolutely no trouble.

E L D O R A D O P O L O C L U B.C O M

21

THE GAME

Polo is played by two teams of four players (with two mounted umpires) on a field that is 300 yards long and 160 yards wide—equal to just over nine American football fields. And that doesn’t include the end zones and the areas down the sidelines. The goal posts are 24 feet apart. The game consists of either four or six chukkas (periods) of seven minutes and 30 seconds. If the game is tied at the end of regulation time, sudden death overtime is played. Play starts at center with an umpire’s bowl in (underhanded) between the two teams. Scoring a goal is counted just like in hockey: one point per goal. After a goal is scored, the teams return to center and they change ends. The team that was going to your right is now going to your left and vice versa. The purpose is to nullify any adverse or beneficial effect that the elements may have on play. Keep in mind that the time clock stops only on the umpire’s whistle and this is usually when a penalty has been called. The clock does not stop when a goal is scored and the teams return to center. The clock also does not stop when the ball goes wide of the goal, or when the ball goes over the side. If the ball is hit wide of the goal the defending team is given a free shot, called a knock in, from the backline or end line. If the ball goes over the side the umpire will bowl the ball in from the point where it went out.

22

ELDORADO POLO

Hooking an opposing player’s mallet during an attempt to hit the ball is allowed. Bumping or pushing another player’s horse when he/she is trying to make a play on the ball is also permitted. The mallets are primarily made of bamboo with hardwood heads. The polo ball consists of compressed plastic. The ball is hit on the side of the mallet head - not the end, as in croquet.

T H E P L AY E R S Polo has changed a great deal in the last 45 to 50 years. We used to think of it as a game played by eight amateur players on a Sunday afternoon. Now, more often than not, the amateurs have hired professional players to play with them so you’re now watching a combination of amateurs and professionals. These amateurs are often referred to as patrons. All polo players are handicapped—much like golf—from minus 2 to 10. Unlike golf, in polo the better you play, the higher your rating. A player’s rating, expressed in goals, has nothing to do with the number of goals he/she would score in a game. The handicaps of the four players on a team are added together and that is the total handicap of the team. If one team has a higher handicap than the other, the lower rated team would start with the difference on the scoreboard—like a low net in golf.

Each player has a numbered jersey. That number signifies what position that player is playing. The number 1 is primarily offensive while the number 4 is primarily defensive. Normally the number 3 is the strongest player and considered to be the quarterback and will control the team. The number 2 is usually the busiest of the four and expected to get the ball from the ‘middle’ of play up to the front. The number 2 is also expected to cover the opposing number 3. All players must hold the mallet with their right hand but are allowed to hit the ball on both sides of the horse.

P E N A LT I E S Like any sport, there are penalties in polo (fouls) called when a player does something prohibited within the rules. There are two mounted umpires on the field and a referee on the side of every game. If the umpires don’t agree, they can then ask the referee to help decide. The most frequently called foul relates to a RIGHT OF WAY that exists at all times during play. How is this right of way created? As it travels, the ball creates an imaginary line - not only over the path it travelled, but projected out in front and behind. This is known as THE LINE OF THE BALL. The player travelling down the LEFT side of this imaginary line has the RIGHT OF WAY. No other player can ride in front or reach in front of a player who has the right of way if that move is dangerous or impeding to the player with the right of way. Note here that the player with the right of way does not need to be travelling in the direction that the ball was hit. He/she can be riding in the opposite direction but doing so on the LEFT side of the line. Note as well, that the last player to hit the ball does not necessarily have the right of way. Other penalties in polo include: hooking across or under a horse; reaching under or in front of an opponent’s horse for the ball; bumping severely and staggering a horse; failing to advance the ball when being defended by an opposing player; hitting the ball over your own end line; dangerous use of the mallet; and unsportsmanlike conduct. Most penalties (fouls) result in the awarding of a free hit for the team that was fouled.

E L D O R A D O P O L O C L U B.C O M

23

THE HORSES When we watch polo we are, first and foremost, watching a game of horses. In fact, the horse is considered to be 75 to 85 per cent of a player’s game. In other words, if you cannot get to the ball, you can’t hit it. It’s that simple. Polo is a game of anticipation and if the horse isn’t able to do what you want it to do, you won’t be able to make many plays. By far, most of the horses playing polo are thoroughbreds. Only the thoroughbred has the stamina to play on the very large field for 7 minutes and 30 seconds. These horses come from around the world and many are from the racetrack. They might not have been fast enough to make money on the track, but they are certainly fast enough to play polo. Note here, that when we think of thoroughbreds that were previously racehorses we tend to think of speed. In polo however, while speed is a factor, the ability of the horse to stop and turn is also very important. As well as coming from racing, many polo horses are raised specifically to play polo. These horses can come from breeding farms, from players, or from people who raise just a few horses each year. It takes about one year to break and train a horse for polo and even then, as in many sports, some ‘seasoning’ is necessary for further development.

All horses’ tails are taped or tied up and all legs are wrapped. The tails are done to prevent interference from the mallet and the legs are done for both support and protection. Each player will change horses after every chukka and some will change during a chukka as well. And now you have a basic knowledge of the game of polo which will help you enjoy the great sport that polo is. If there are some things that you are not sure about or would like explained in more detail - just listen to the announcer, I try to make following the game as easy and enjoyable as possible.

Tony Gregg has been involved in polo in Canada and the US for over 30 years. He is the current 'Voice of Eldorado', announcing games Fridays through Sundays throughout the polo season.

G IAN T S T R I D ES T he future of polo is

bright. There are a

series of new initiatives

being spearheaded by the United States Polo Association (USPA), Umpires LLC, and the Polo Training Foundation (PTF). There is a pool of young professional and youth players with more talent and training under their belt than ever before. There are amazing technological advances in equine veterinary medicine. And then there is the fastest growing polo population in the country: women. Here we explore just a few of the latest advances and accomplishments in polo, at Eldorado Polo Club and beyond‌

here are several initiatives moving polo forward in the Pacific Coast Circuit. First, we see the National Youth Tournament Series (NYTS) greatly benefitting youth players. Across the country the USPA hosted 39 NYTS events, 5 of which were played here in the Pacific Coast. Each of these events were

professionally run and were challenging games. Finals were held on the Main field at Santa Barbara Polo Club and the stands were full of spectators, players, and families. The level of youth talent was amazing and exciting for all to experience. Second, there is a strong focus on the future of Arena Polo. Many of our future players will begin their polo careers in an arena. The Pacific Coast has two new Arenas within the Circuit, and a third is scheduled in the coming years. One of our clubs hired a full time Arena Professional to teach polo year-round and we are hoping to continue to expand this effort throughout the region. Thirdly, we are strongly behind recognizing and supporting the largest growing population of USPA membership: women players. It is important that we standardize Women’s Handicaps and encourage their growth in the sport. Personally, I often align with women players as

he accuracy of umpiring has improved by leaps and bounds, just in the last century alone. The USPA’s Umpires LLC organization has developed umpiring into a professional career and instituted an extensive training and certification program for players seeking to become career umpires. Umpiring technology has also progressed, whereby field officials are now fitted with Vokkero radios, an encrypted radio communication system first instituted by FIFA’s pro umpires. Polo umpires are now able to speak to each other in real time during games, allowing for improved communication and decision-making. Aerial drone technology has also come into use for instant replays, providing an uninhibited view of players and ponies from above.

30

ELDORADO POLO

Another amazing development has been video coverage offered by the US Polo Network. Many games are now livestreamed and available for review, meaning that umpires can go back to review important calls and decisions. Livestream video coverage is changing the way we all consume polo. Based on video analysis of games, the Umpires LLC organization has instituted a thorough system of data collection and analysis. teammates when I compete in polo - it’s great to stand on the trophy podium with a team that includes female athletes, looking down on four gentlemen who thought they had the win. The future of polo requires ongoing commitment from all of us. This involves participation on many levels: inviting new players, encouraging current players to upgrade their ponies and play at a higher level, assisting players as they select professionals to improve the competition of polo, and expressing concerns to your Board of Governors, Governors-AtLarge, Delegates and Governors. California polo continues to be growing and is a strong contributor to USPA membership. We have great volunteers, club staff and members and our dedication is unmatched when measured against the other 12 circuits in the nation. Daniel Walker, Pacific Coast Circuit Governor

he Polo Training Foundation (PTF) just celebrated its 50th anniversary year. We’re excited to renew and expand several of our programs to help grow polo, especially with new West Coast initiatives. This year a team from New Zealand toured several clubs in California and Hawaii, and we’re hoping to have an ongoing exchange program. Two of the four students we took to England this year, Athena Malin and Bayne Bossom, are great examples of the young talent coming out of California. In addition to the Eldorado Junior Program, the PTF is a partial sponsor of the Central Coast Polo Club summer camps and the Miguel Torres Memorial Tournament at Santa Barbara. We’re also very excited about the addition of a West Coast College Fair at Santa Barbara Polo Club, where high school polo players can meet with college polo coaches and play a game in front of them. The Eldorado Junior Program, spearheaded by Fred P. Mannix over 30 years ago, was successfully managed for years by Janet Ludwig, and is now under the watchful eye of Violeta Escapite and Mike and Kerri Kerley. The PTF sponsors Eldorado polo through the generous support of donors to the program, an initiative led by former PTF Chair Karlene Garber, who strongly believed in our philosophy that young players are the future of the sport. We are proud to continue that tradition and hope we can soon revive the East–West youth competitions that are a part of our long-standing history. Danny Scheraga, Executive Director

very three years, the Federation of International Polo (FIP) hosts a World Cup Championship tournament showcasing the finest up-and-coming players from around the globe. In 2017, a total of six Eldorado players were chosen to represent their country as part of team USA: Jesse Bray, Jimmy Wright, Cacho Galindo, Remy Muller, Jared Sheldon, and Patrick Uretz.

has a keen understanding of the work involved to get there: “In order to be a better player than others, you have to work harder than others.”

Fortunately, Jesse loves his job: “Polo is the only thing I like to do. I am very lucky that I get to do a job that many others can only do as a hobby.”

JESSE BRAY In June of 2018, Jesse Bray will become one of the youngest players in U.S. history to reach a handicap of 6 goals. Jesse started polo at the Eldorado Polo Club at an age he was too young to remember. Years of working with his legendary father, Graham Bray, gave Jesse the foundation he needed to “go pro” as a polo player following his high school graduation. Jesse’s years of success playing at the Eldorado, San Diego, and Hidden Creek polo clubs earned him the opportunity to join Team USPA and eventually play in two FIP World Championships. He made the most of the chance to travel and play polo internationally: “Being a part of Team USA opened doors for me. Beyond the opportunity to wear my country’s jersey on my back, which was amazing, it launched my career and really helped me land some great new playing jobs.” Yet as much polo as he has played in his 25 years, Jesse remains humble about his professional development: “My first year in Florida, I really felt like ‘the kid from Cali’ and I didn’t know how I would fare against players who had been established in Florida for years, even generations. Winning the 20-Goal Joe Barry Memorial tournament my first year in Wellington was a personal steppingstone for me.” Looking to the future, Jesse has ambitions to take his handicap all the way to the top, and he

JIMMY WRIGHT For Jimmy Wright, 2017 was a pinnacle year. He played 4-Goal and 8-Goal tournaments throughout the winter season at Eldorado and Empire Polo Clubs, and was on the winning team in 7 out of the 11 tournaments he played. Over the course of the summer, he played 8, 12 and 16-Goal at Santa Barbara Polo Club, including the Pacific Coast Open. Then it was off to Sydney to play for his country in the FIP World Cup Championship. As he works to become the best player he can be, Jimmy admits that he continually relies on others for guidance, advice, knowledge, and opportunities. This past year, he credits Santi Trotz for helping him with unbelievable

guidance on the field and with pre- and postgame analysis. Jimmy also admits that Trotz has provided him with priceless career-building knowledge about “how to navigate the polo industry with integrity.” The foundations of Jimmy’s passion for polo were, like Jesse Bray, passed down from his polo pro father, Erik Wright. Jimmy also worked and played extensively with Dayelle Fargey over the past few years, and learned a lot from her dedication to the sport. In addition to the mentors that have helped him get to his current handicap rating of 3 Goals, Jimmy has looked to close friends, several of whom joined him on Team USA. “There was a great group of players on the U.S. team, and the best part is that many of us have grown up playing with or against each

other, so we know each other really well. It was amazing to step onto the field in Sydney knowing that I was representing my country, and that my teammates truly had my back in the game. We were able to push each other and get the most out of each other, because of our friendship and history together.” Looking forward, Jimmy wants to achieve the highest possible handicap he can, play as much high-goal polo as possible, play competitively in Argentina, and hopefully represent his country again in the next FIP World Cup. Jimmy understands that, as a polo pro, he has to be much more than “a great player on the field,” and he is continually working to improve his horsemanship, consistency, and knowledge of the sport in every way he can.

“Being part of Team USA was a dream come true. It was an amazing experience to be a part of such a great group of players representing our country. It was also a great opportunity to serve as an ambassador of the sport and make friends with players from all around the world.”

Cacho Galindo

“There is a great field of talented players at my level, so it was a true honor to be selected to represent the USA. The opportunity to travel and play and meet other players from around the world is amazing. For me, the 2015 FIP final in Chile was probably the most amazing polo game I ever played. There were more than 12,000 spectators and they were going wild during the game. We were treated like professional athletes and our game was featured in an amazing sports stadium. We came so close to winning… the entire experience was one that I will never forget.”

LEVELING THE FIELD L

ess than 50 years ago, women were not allowed to be members of the United States Polo Association and Sue Sally Hale was disguising herself as a man in order to play competitively. Today, women players constitute the fastest growing polo demographic in North America and are infiltrating the sport on all levels: in Interscholastic and Intercollegiate leagues; in low-, medium-, and high-goal leagues across the U.S.; and in women's tournaments around the world. Most recently, the Argentine Women’s Open was played on Palermo Field 2, just a few hours before the prestigious Argentine Open final on Palermo Field 1. In California, more than almost any other state, women are building successful careers in polo; a field traditionally dominated by men. Professional player Dayelle Fargey attributes this shift to a number of factors: “The gap is closing in polo, and in other sports as well. Women are increasingly being accepted and recognized as pro athletes, managers and trainers, and there is a lot more support for those of us who have chosen polo as a career.” Polo is one of the only sports in the world in which men and women compete as equals. And that is exactly how Dayelle Fargey assesses her mostly male competitors: as her equals. Dayelle was the sole female player on the winning Northern Blizzard team in the 2017 Eldorado Cup 8-Goal Tournament. Other pro women players on the Eldorado podium last season included Caroline Anier and Abby Riggs. Anier, winner of the Fish Creek 8-Goal Tournament with the Antelope team, has played professionally in the USA and France for over 30 years. Abby Riggs, winner of the Fish Creek Cup 4-Goal with the Farmers & Merchants Bank team, was one of the female trailblazers in high-goal polo at the Eldorado, Santa Barbara, and Houston polo clubs starting in the late-1990s. For Riggs, what it takes to succeed as a polo pro is: “Desire, an uncompromising work ethic, and complete dedication to the sport.” These qualities, along with their love for the game and for the horses, drove Fargey, Riggs, and Anier to success in their careers. Fargey was in her final year of university when she realized her professional calling was polo. For up-and-coming women who share her passion, she shares this advice: “Play as much as possible and at the highest level available. Ride all types of horses, and watch many games. And try to talk to, and learn something, from everyone.” In last year’s Skins tournament, Jennifer Luttrell-Benardoni was the sole female competitor, but she barely noticed: “I don’t think about it! On the field I just try to do my job no matter who the opponent is.” Off the field, Jenny dedicates countless hours to team building, and last March, it all paid off: “I worked for years to put a winning Skins team together. The most important thing was to bring together the right 4

37

players, with the right game strategy and team dynamics. The second most important part was the horses. We worked hard to make sure that each player had an amazing group of horses that were sound, fit and ready to win.” Along with her team’s Skins win, Jenny received MVP honors, thanks, in part, to her winning play in overtime: “I try to surround myself with players that help me build my confidence on the field and who have trust in one another. In the Skins overtime chukker, Matthew heard me ask for the back shot, he trusted my call and got it to me. I knew he was going to turn for goal, and when he called for the neck shot, I trusted he would finish the play. That will be a game memory that sticks with me the rest of my life.” Off the polo field, women are also achieving success as horse trainers, team managers, and club managers. One of the most reputable polo horse trainers in the western U.S. is Kim Kelly. Kim played as a 2-Goal pro for 18 years, then shifted her career towards real estate. She admits that “I could not have had success in real estate, without success in polo.” As one of the desert valley’s premier realtors, Kim relies on a few valuable polo “life lessons”: always have a back-up plan and be prepared to use it; be a team player no matter what the circumstances;

keep pushing forward and be prepared to make quick, smart decisions when necessary. Kim currently dedicates about as much time to horse training as she does to real estate, creating the perfect balance between intellectual, time-demanding professional duties and the physical discipline, patience and joy that comes from training polo horses. At the Santa Barbara Polo Club, one of the premier clubs in the western U.S., polo manager Melanja Jones relies on problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills to achieve success. Melanja was groomed for her position by years of experience in the sport as an Intercollegiate player, groom, green horse trainer, and instructor. Her first leap into management came at the International Polo Club in Wellington. You could say that her career experiences started at the top: having worked alongside Jimmy Newman and Sunny Hale relatively early in her career, she gained valuable experience that has continually informed to her career. She admits, “I really enjoy working with people, and this helps me in my job as polo manager. My job is great because it also involves community-building. I can have a vision for success that involves young players, new sponsors, pros, or whomever, and with the right planning and execution, the vision becomes a reality.”

aintaining a pony in top physical condition is one of the number one factors contributing to a player and team’s success on the polo field. Just like professional athletes in football or any other highperformance sport, ponies must be properly conditioned. Maintaining this condition is where equine veterinary medicine comes in. One of the specialties of the San Dieguito Equine Group, who serve as on-call veterinarians at Eldorado Polo Club, is Advanced Diagnostic Imaging. According to Dr. Mike Manno, advanced diagnostics have come a long way in both human and veterinary medicine. Equine imaging is almost always at the forefront, sometimes years ahead of human counterparts, and the level of imaging for the various areas of interest on the horse has increased dramatically in the last few decades. The most commonly used tools are digital radiography and ultrasound, which are critical in diagnosing equine problems related to bone, lung, abdominal, and dental issues. Most diagnostic systems are now completely battery operated and can be used anywhere in the field with no reliance on plug-in power. The degree of detail achieved is remarkable and digitized images can be manipulated, stored, and sent off instantaneously. For even more sophisticated techniques, San Dieguito Equine Group offers Nuclear Scintigraphy (bone scans) and MRI capabilities in their clinic in north San Diego County. Endoscopy is a specialty diagnostic procedure used to examine respiratory and breathing problems as well as to view the stomach for gastric ulcers. CT scans are also available for the equine patient and new technologies are always on the horizon. Another specialty of the San Dieguito Equine Group is equine wellness management. Because of the strenuous, fast-paced nature of polo, equine issues often relate to soft tissue—muscles, tendons and ligaments. For ponies who play into their teens, arthritic conditions are not uncommon. Players are increasingly looking to acupuncture and chiropractic to help maintain their ponies’ condition. Acupuncture is an effective non-pharmaceutical way to address acute or chronic pain and musculoskeletal issues in horses. It also has other beneficial effects on non-lameness issues such as neurological conditions or behavioral problems. Equine chiropractic promotes natural health through the adjustment of the joints of the body to remove inhibition or interference from the nervous system. As the field of equine veterinary medicine continues to advance, the well-being and physical conditioning of polo ponies will improve, making the game better for equine and human athletes alike.

M E M O G R AC I DA by M egan Ko z m i n s k i Over the course of his legendary career, Guillermo Gracida, Jr. (fondly known as Memo), won 16 U.S. Open Championships, an unparalleled achievement. Memo also holds a 21-consecutive-year record as a 10-goal professional player. In 1997, he was inducted into the National Polo Hall of Fame, the only active player to receive this honor so early in their career. Memo’s success in polo is 40 years strong and transcends all levels of the sport: as a player, coach, team organizer, horse trainer, and educator. For years Memo and his wife, Meghan, have traveled between Florida, Mexico, and Argentina. Yet he is no stranger to the fields of Eldorado, having won the U.S. Open here in 1987 with the Aloha team, in 1992 with Hanalei Bay, and in 1993 with Gehache. Having recently invested in his dream polo farm in Santa Ynez, Memo is excited to make California his new home, as well as a new destination for international polo. MK: Having played polo all over the world, what draws you back to California? Memo: The weather, the people, the players, the dynamics of the West Coast—this is a great combination for success. I want to help grow the sport, and I am very passionate about it. The desert is a very special place for polo; there are so many fields very near to each other. And then a short drive away is Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez. I see a great opportunity for me to become a part of the polo circuit in California. MK: You are an internationally-renowned horseman. What advice do you give to other players when it comes to horsemanship? Memo: What horsemanship really means is the connection to the horse and the communication with the horse. Polo is the most enjoyable sport, and the easiest thing to teach—or learn—is how to hit the ball. The hardest thing to teach or learn is horsemanship. But to maximize your enjoyment in the game, you must learn to communicate with the animal. The thrill of becoming one with the horse, working together as a unit, is a far greater thrill than scoring 10 goals in a row. When you sit and talk with high-goal players around the world, all they talk about are horses. How the horses are performing, their bloodlines, their training. And so, you see, it is really the most important part of the game.

MK: You have coached so many teams and players to success, including Ellerstina in the Triple Crown in Argentina. What is most important when it comes to building and organizing great teams? Memo: The first thing I consider goes back to the horses. The player with the right horses is an asset to the team. Or it is the player whose horsemanship is well suited to horses that are provided to them. This is a very important equation. Next, the chemistry of the team needs to be great, both on and off the field. When you have a player on your team who you know will give 100% with no reservations, then you do likewise. If all players work hard for each other, the chemistry is right. Third is positioning. You must have a Field General—someone who organizes the team during the game, and before and after. Also, it always helps to find a player that is maybe underrated, or who plays above their handicap if provided better horses. It is a great feeling to enter into a 12-Goal game, knowing you have a team that is worth 14 Goals. MK: What are you looking forward to the most this winter polo season? Memo: I am very passionate about polo. I feel it from the inside out. The essence of polo has so many things to offer—horsemanship, adrenaline, comradery. I think no matter what level player you are, -1 or 10 goals, there is a place for you in this sport. I am excited to join the California circuit and see what we can make it. I think we should all become allies to make polo great in this area.

POLO'S WONDER WOMAN

SUNNY HALE

(1968-2017)

In 2018 Sunny Hale will be inducted into the Museum of Polo Hall of Fame in Lake Worth, Florida. Sunny will be honored posthumously for her remarkable polo career and contributions to the sport of polo. Sunny made history by reaching a 5-goal handicap, becoming the first woman to win the U.S. Open, and playing professionally on teams alongside the world’s greatest male players for over 20 seasons. She

promoted the sport, horses and horsemanship as an avid mentor to aspiring polo players—male and female, young and old. She traveled the world lecturing and giving polo clinics and seminars; created the American Polo Horse Association; founded the Women’s handicap system that was adopted by the USPA; and started the Women’s Championship Tournament to give greater opportunities to women in the sport. The Museum of Polo’s Executive Director, George DuPont, says of Sunny, “What she accomplished in her short life is nothing short of amazing… Sunny is regarded the world over as the most influential woman in polo of our time.” Eldorado Polo Club will honor Sunny with a Horsemanship Award each season, to be presented in her name to a female player. Kate Weber, the first recipient of this perpetual award, reflects on it’s meaning: “A horsemanship award is the perfect tribute to Sunny. Her gift with horses was what separated her from so many other players. She could make a difficult horse look great and people were always willing to provide her horses because the horses came back better. Sunny generously shared her horsemanship skills and over the years I learned so much from her.” Any witness to the career of Sunny Hale will say that her talent and drive was unforgettable. Players who had the pleasure of her company, on and off the field, will remember her even more fondly for her gracious character, wit, enthusiasm and encouragement.

LUXURY ANDALUSIAN R E T R E AT Finca Cortesin, Spain Long ago, there was a traditional, family-owned Andalusian estate, set in the rolling hills of southern Spain. Endless pastures, historic olive trees, and beautiful Mediterranean vistas defined the exquisite private estate, known to be one of the most scenic locales in the country. One-thousand years later, the estate serves as the home of the presentday luxury resort of Finca Cortesin. Set just outside the coastal settlement of Casares, the resort is a short drive away from Sotogrande—the European playground for polo, golf, and sailing. What is striking about the Finca is the charming mix of traditional and contemporary sensibility. Spanish culture lives in the rustic white walls, reclaimed stone flooring, shady bougainvillea-clad arcades and peaceful garden courtyards. Yet the Finca also represents the contemporary identity of Andalucía with its upscale guest suites, award-winning spa, and world-class dining and hospitality. The hotel's signature restaurant Kabuki Raw, was awarded one Michelin star for its traditional Japanese fare and progressive cuisine influenced by Japanese and Mediterranean culture.

ELDORADO POLO

Finca Cortesin is also widely recognized for its world championship 18-hole golf course as well as its exclusive Beach Club, where discerning guests can enjoy the relaxation of the beach without sacrificing elegance. Activities also offered by the hotel include fishing, sailing, hiking and whale and dolphin watching. A trip to southern Spain is incomplete without a visit to Sotogrande and the prestigious Santa Maria Polo Club. Every summer season, Santa Maria welcomes the world’s best polo players, luxury sponsors, and close to 100,000 spectators to its impressive facilities. The club hosts more than 100 matches between late July and late August and there are more than 50 shops and 15 restaurants onsite. If you visit in August, the Gold Cup is not to be missed. Also plan to tour the Sotogrande harbour and marina, to take in the luxury boats, classy shops and lounges, and the Sunday market.

AUTHENTIC ISL AND PA R A D I S E Nihiwatu, Indonesia Located 250 miles east of Bali is the unforgettable island of Nihi Sumba. Originally founded as a surf lodge, Nihiwatu is now widely recognized as one of the world’s best luxury resorts. Nihiwatu offers outdoor-style living in terrace villas, each with its own private freshwater pool and panoramic views of the Indian ocean. The calming décor, canopy beds, and exceptional staff of 400+ make you feel comfortably at home yet completely transported. Note: shoes are optional and board shorts are completely appropriate dinner attire. Water fanatics will thrive at Nihi—there’s everything from surfing safaris and stand up paddle board river tours, to snorkeling and sustainable spearfishing. Shore dwellers can master the art of their bunker shot with a round of beach golf, leaving the kids at the Boathouse to paint murals for installation at the local Sumbanese schoolhouse. For land lovers: waterfall and jungle treks, picnics and walking tours to local villages provide immersion in the island’s unforgettable geography and culture. For the equestrian: sunset beach rides, trail rides, pony club and Sandalwood Club beach polo promise to satisfy, no matter of age or ability. And for visitors more interested in R & R than exhilarating adventure, limitless yoga, spa and wellness activities allow for the perfect transition to island time. The list of experiences at Nihi Sumba is endless. To further the Island’s unforgettable appeal is the ongoing work of The Sumba Foundation, which is committed to improving health and education on the island, while also preserving and respecting the culture and traditions of the Sumbanese people. It’s no wonder Forbes describes Nihiwatu as a “tropical-island luxury playground with a soul.” Understated luxury meets unregulated freedom at Nihiwatu. C O L O N I A L C U LT U R E & COBBLESTONES San Miguel de Allende, Mexico The claim to fame of this quaint colonial hill town located 150 miles north of Mexico City: rich arts and culture, cobblestone streets, and… no traffic lights! San Miguel de Allende was named for both the monk who founded it, Juan de San Miguel, and General Ignacio Allende, a hero in Mexico’s War of Independence. San Miguel is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers all the arts and culture of a big city quaintly contained within a picturesque mountain town.

Reflecting the culture and charm of the town is the quiet, sophisticated resort of Rosewood San Miguel de Allende. Set around a tranquil courtyard, the hotel is peaceful and elegant, and is situated just a short walk from the town’s main square. Inside the resort, guests are treated to grand colonial furniture, tall wood-beamed ceilings, wood fireplaces and impressive views of the city. With three swimming pools, an award-winning spa, two restaurants, an art gallery and a wine cellar, one barely needs to leave the resort to experience the perfect getaway, yet leaving the resort is another treat of its own: including tours of San Miguel’s famous pink gothic-style church (Parroquia de San Miguel Arcangel) and the Centro Cultural Ignacio Ramírez (Bellas Artes), art galleries, cultural centers, and an endless array of authentic shopfronts. A thriving culinary scene also offers amazing restaurants, many within walking distance of the resort. Pack some sturdy walking shoes—the cobblestones lining the vibrant streets are not easily navigated in flip flops. To gain a better appreciation of the region, travel outside of town to one of the highly regarded vineyards for a tasting tour and gourmet meal. If tequila is your thing, opt for a tour and sampling of San Miguel’s most wellknown small-batch tequila at the home of Casa Dragones. And don’t miss the opportunity to take in the stunning panoramas of San Miguel by way of a hot air balloon tour. If you need a polo fix, you can travel over to the polo club at La Santisima Trinidad, where they host a series of four international polo games throughout the year, and offer lessons to anyone interested in trying their hand at the sport (no experience required!).

A WILD RIDE BY SUKEY FORBES When was the last time you played with your demons? Eighteen months ago on a bucket list dare, I showed up for a polo lesson on a blazing hot summer afternoon in Petaluma, California. I showed up despite my lack of riding ability, irrespective of being the age where my bones broke rather than bent, and with utter disregard to my lack of spare time or money. Edmundo, the senior statesman of school horses, eyed me warily. He was not keen for another go-round of well-intentioned mallet swings that would thwonk his innocent forelegs, and he knew the drill far too well. In an attempt to develop a rapport with my new four-

Sukey and Edmundo, first polo lesson in 2016

footed friend, I ran my hands along his neck and rubbed his withers while I confided in him that I’d consider staying in the saddle to be a victory for now. Once on his back, I was handed two sets of reins and one long whip, all of which were to be held in my left hand and used to communicate, often simultaneously, with the horse by wiggling my fingers or cocking my wrist. In my right hand was placed a long cane mallet with a cylindrical head at the end, the broadside of which was to be used to hit the ball. Thus began my stick and ball lesson with Edmundo: swing, miss, curse, repeat. I had vastly underestimated the neural pathway that was required to execute even a basic hit at a standstill, let alone with any speed. Edmundo knew the position and strategy of the game better than I. If he did not have confidence in me lining up on the ball he would move off to the side, speed up, or slow down, even if his last ditch effort to save face meant moving off the ball entirely, a patronizing strategy I cannot decide if I appreciate or resent. Twelve lessons later I got my first hit on the ball square and true. “Thwack!” I watched its low arc in the exact direction I had aimed it. I squealed with delight, and could have sworn I heard a symphony of angels singing a Halleluiah chorus. Or was it the seraphic Edmundo? “It’s time to play some chukkers,’’ the club pro told me after a few months of stick and ball lessons at a pace slow enough that he could text and update his social media as we zig zagged on the field. “Are you ready to play with others?” On my right shoulder the guardian angel with knitted brow and flushed face cautioned, “Are you kidding me? Don’t go out THERE! It’s dangerous. Polo is a contact sport ferlordssake! You might fall off. What if you get trampled? There could be blood!” “Yes,” I agreed with my angel. “Yes, you are right.” My pulse raced. “Perhaps I should quit now while I am still of sound-ish mind and body.” And then the suave little devil with a shock of dark hair and seven o’clock shadow who has always gotten me into the kind of trouble I wouldn’t trade, chuckles as he lands roughly on my other shoulder (for sure he opts for the near side, because that is the devil of all shots in my opinion), leans in and growls in his intoxicating velvet voice “Baby, you’ve got this. Get out there.” Guess who won the throw-in? And darn it if I haven’t spent a significant bit of time in a guiltinfused struggle over the pieces of my life that have been neglected ever since that day. I now live for the rapturous moments on horseback thundering down the field, a weightless passenger simultaneously merged in breath and movement with a 1,000- pound living machine that is just barely within my control. Regularly, I am reduced to clinging with all my might to stay on, as the pony recognizes the shift in play and follows the line of the ball before I do. The promise of adventure, and the potential to manage some demons, lured me to polo but it is the many contrasts within polo that has kept me coming back for more. The competition is heated on the field. At best, horse and rider maneuver, seemingly teetering on the

edge of control of self and steed, and yet they stop, shift, and pirouette with the grace of a dancer. At their worst, the players are brash and hot headed, and the ponies are ornery and unpredictable. There is little time to plan on the field. Polo requires a level of mastery and faith in one’s ability to work on well-honed instinct with horse, team, and self to make a play in a game where an error can result in serious injury. As soon as I had grasped a few basics of the sport, I found the lifestyle surrounding polo to be equally enthralling, and my guardian devil agreed. Chiffon party dresses, pocket squares and champagne are just part of the story. Many of the best players in the world are from South America, and as such their culture has infused every aspect of the game, from horsemanship to post-game celebration. The Argentine tradition of the asado takes a strong hold as a way of repairing egos and fortifying friendships. Players, grooms, patrons and family members assemble, many still in their dirty polo whites from the day as meats and sausages are grilled over a low fire pit. Social lubricants like Malbec, Modelo beer or Fernet (a bitter spirit made drinkable by mixing with a syrupy cola) are sipped, as rival players sit side-by-side on hay bales sharing stories from the day and re-hashing plays with some good-natured ribbing. Amidst smoke laced with the fragrance of hay and shavings from mucked stalls, a player might sit strumming a guitar, the background for a tear-inducing, spoken word ballad (recitado) about horses. Earlier on the field a furious competitor, this is his moment of redemption and repose. These contrasts keep me enchanted. While I got on that pony to have an adventure and perhaps learn something about myself, I had no idea the wild ride ahead. The growth I have experienced as a player and as a human has been an unexpected gift from the angel and the devil that is polo. Every single time I get up on a horse my stomach is still in knots and my pulse quickens. And yet now the pulse is also due to the anticipation of the euphoric thrill that is to come as I step over the boards. Lined up for the throw-in, I breathe deeply and remind myself to trust my horse, my mind and my body. Seven minutes and 30 seconds later, hot, thirsty and euphoric, it is time to ride off the field to switch horses. Dismounted with my boots on the ground and regardless of how I played thus far, I hear the devil whispering: More polo please.

SUNDAY BEST

Sunday is the best day for polo—a day that both players and spectators look forward to all week. Here we meet a few Eldorado regulars, who share their passion for polo. If I’m fortunate enough to be playing, I enjoy the added excitement of the crowds and announcers. If not, I love watching my friends play, enjoying the beautiful field and mountain landscape and warm weather. Given that my entire family loves polo, I can’t imagine a better way to spend a day together. Shane Baum, Leisure Society Eyewear

The polo is great and I love the announcing of Tony Gregg. Bill Devane, Actor

I can think of few things more enjoyable than spending a beautiful Sunday afternoon at the polo matches at Eldorado Polo Club. With great views of the mountains, the setting is absolutely spectacular. I love watching the athleticism of the ponies while sipping champagne with my family, friends and clients!
